I don't understand why everyone says this makes Jingse like ruyi. She doesn't. This doesn't make her 'feel better about her' she still hates her. The only thing it does in boosting Ruyi is making Jingse feel like she could have been stronger in her own unhappy marriage and broken it off on her own terms instead of having her father basically harbor her like an exile.
Even so, Jingse regretted it of mistreating Ruyi from the start. It’s not like she ‘liked’ her, but her feelings towards Ruyi has officially loosened up afterwards from this moment.

看了很多遍，，现在想想，如懿这个举动还是让我觉得不像她一贯的做法。想想，多少次宫斗，她都是坐着等当事人自己犯事儿，皇后嫁女她又是那么机灵。怎么这次皇上折腾，她就坐不住了呢？

可能作者就是要表现她太在乎情分，与其说渣龙和魏嬿婉害了她，不如说她自己这份儿情痴也占个不小的百分比吧。
后面的剪了烧了 合影画像，也还是没看透。真悟了，根本也不用在乎是不是在一副画像上了。

I think she cut her hair to give herself time, as an empress she was to easy to setup, Wei always seemed to have the upper hand, unlike when the empress was just a consort she had more freedoms. I think also at this time she knew her own health was fading. It’s easier to make moves when you are ignored.
It gave her freedom. She knew she was dying, she knew he didn't love her anymore, he didn't trust her, and she would never be able to pass on as Empress, so she decided to just simply end it all on her own terms and give herself freedom in spirit.
Ruyi never desired power nor the Empress seat, she never schemed and was deemed 'too kind' because she refused to fight for the emperor's favour and treated her servants like people. Her mistake was her naiivety, she still held faith in her childhood lover and he changed to become an egoistic emperor that kept making excuses to preserve his 'untainted' reputation but he even betrayed his own words by indulging in destructive behaviour.
I think the death of another of Ruyi's cherished friends (Li Yunche) was a wake up call for her, from then on she realised that innocents would keep dying and would not be given justice under the emperor's rule.... Ruyi didn't care so much about being almost killed herself several times, of course she was hurt by the emperor's constant suspicions, and new infatuations with new concubines etc.. but I believe the main reason she rebelled against being the Empress was she realised she cared too much like the Empress Dowager said...
Ruyi changed over time, she realised her naiivety in thinking her innocence and sincerity towards the emperor would clear her name but by then it was too late. Each time new scandals arose in the palace she fell victim to them and had to mourn deaths silently - never able to fully air her grievances.
Ruyi became disappointed in the emperor for never taking accountability for the deaths of so many of those she cherished and for not trusting her each time she became a target. The emperor felt Ruyi didn't appreciate him elevating her to the Empress seat, and for clearing her name after each scandal, and he felt that she wasn't giving him respect by criticising him as she did...
We can see how much Ruyi regretted not being able to save so many of the children and innocents, before Ruyi died she expressed her desire to see what they would have become if they had lived. Her kindness towards those who served her showed in how Rongpei chose to follow her to the underworld. The other concubines sincerely mourned her death too. @@thlydd
