One thing i noticed about Ruyi's passing/funeral, it was very quiet and almost peaceful. I'm sure there was the traditional, loud sorrow but they didn't let us see that. They showed us the people who genuinely cared for Ruyi (from the staff to the guards to the harem) quietly mourn her and wish for her peace. We didn't hear Yu say a single word and that spoke volumes. Ruyi's gentle and tranquil ways followed even to her passing. What a great cast of actors/actresses!!!
You know, it wasn’t Hailan who did it for me. The scene briefly panned over a eunuch burning papers and at first glance I thought they were just showing the staff paying respects. Well, it was true but I realized that it was Sanbao!! Her trusted and faithful eunuch. It wasn’t Hailan that broke my heart but it was Sanbao that sent me over the top, in his quiet grief at the death of his cherished empress that he’s been with since before she got sent to the Cold Palace. 💔💔💔 Ruyi is missed by so many, not just by the emperor and her concubine friends. 😢

@@galai4162 Dont' get me started on Sanbao!!!! You hit the nail right on the head. If it was luring a noble lady to beat him instead or baiting a ghost away from his mistress--Sanbao had a special sort of loyalty and respect. He's one of the strongest protectors of that palace for sure!

This was one of the most moving scenes in the whole of the story. It was fitting that her final moments were with Rongpei her faithful and true servant and friend.

In all honesty, I don't blame Ruyi for destroying the portrait and only leaving her son a letter.
The fool of an emperor would have just used her memory in the same way that he did with the previous empress... as a tool to whitewash his image and psychologically abuse whatever woman came after her.

This was such a hard, brutal and emotional series to watch. His level of betrayal was devastating. Such piece of shit. Her level of dignity and patience was supernatural. It was gratifying that she had some good people around her. It never fails to shock me just how vile and terrifying palace life must have been. How any woman survived is beyond me. Compelling tv with a great cast.
I often say that if I had to live in those times I would've either died quickly or become a serial killer.

I cried for 2 days cause of Ruyi's death. I had to watch the ending weeks later, cause that Actress was so moving in this drama.
I know what you mean! I was in shambles!!! Especially in the scene with Rongpei, you could just feel it in your bones. I loved that Ruyi made sure Rongpei knew much much she treasured her before she left.
That actress is Zhou Xun. Acting wise, she's the best of the best in the Chinese entertainment industry. She literally cannot do a bad job even if she tried

It's incredible and to see how many initially put her down for being too old to play the character because she was 42. But I thought she was beautiful and perfect for the level of serenity and wisdom that was needed for the portrayal. Also the actress that played Rong Pei at her side. I always tear up when she realizes Ruyi had died.
I have watched the videos for this drama many times. The actors are superb, the music perfect and the costumes and production designs dazzle your eyes.
I have lost count on how many times I've watched all 80 plus episodes. So much so, that I've learned Chinese.
He finally realized what is important until it is too late

I wonder how many ladies were attracted to the palace life..only to be bitterly disappointed and let down in the end.

Did you see him in 'Love Me if You Dare'.....it was brilliant and he was so good in it. Even at the end you were still wondering about his character.

@@galai4162 - No, not just you. His voice did sound different to how it was in 'Love Me if You Dare'. Could be the sound at the time was a bit off and he wasn't available to record it, so they had to get someone else? Not sure, but his voice was definitely off.
This series is one of the finest dramas I have ever viewed. Superb!

He was a worthless ruler and a worst husband, Rubi deserved so much better and so did all the women he casually lusted for and then abandoned.

@@PPPPSSSSCCCC there is truth to this drama based on the real life ruyi but her real name was not ruyi. As per the drama, most of her records were wiped away from history. What really happen is left from oral stories.that survived and speculation. One thing is certain, she did cut her hair to divorce him. During a time when women could not divorce (it like a death sentence) she had enough because her love was sincere.

With a harem of women so big and fresh women added every 3 years.. He wouldn't need to be loyal but will expect everyone to be loyal becoz he is the king. Make it make sense.. 😞
@@PPPPSSSSCCCC Not in disagreement with you, just offering another perspective: while long and prosperous, his military accomplishments and imperial expansions did ultimately lead to the downfall of both his clan (which might not be such a bad thing if you're an anti-monarchist!) and also the humiliation of imperial China by western imperial powers.
Obviously this show doesn't get into it, but I do think there's an implicit message about how his political realities contributed to the challenges within the harem (but that's my own interpretation).

@nataliazapata7761 historically she died at 48 years old. However in her only surviving painting done when she was around 40 she looked as though she was in her 20s or at most in her mid 30s.
By historical accounts of her time she was as beautiful as she was kind and beneficial to everyone who petitioned to her. A real pity what happened to her and her son. However she was fondly remembered by all the officials, some of which gave their life asking Qianlong to give her posthumous honors. She was that loved and her memory lives on.

No, it wasn't poisoned. Ruyi had been sick for a while, and those closest to her knew she was dying. Rongpei had already decided to also die when her mistress did, so she drank poison after she found her.
Well, this has been discussed somewhere else before. Logically it wasn’t, you see her being ill and can’t see anything beyond that as the viewer. But it isn’t likely to know the exact moment you‘d die, so why should she have been able to place that letter right in front of herself if she was just slipping away. A premonition? This was either a hint that she herself had chosen to go or just the writer‘s choice. I think it’s a little unclear same as you.

Ling Yunche was dead for many years (within the story of the show) when Ruyi died, so no, he wasn't at her funeral. The producers should have had Suoxin there -- they were very close, almost like sisters.
