M.R. James at Christmas. Its a tradition for many...
Magnificent! Thank you so much...Wonderful voices. 💕So cozy.
Love this so much, Michael Horden is wonderful.
The most thrilling ghost story ever, begins in a mundane fashion, is it real or imagined? The terrifying possibilities of such seemingly benign locations and the horror lurking within. Superb! 👻👻👻😱😱😱❤❤❤
A nice adaptation of 1 of my fave stories by M.R. James.
My favourite
MR James ghost story...
I was a week old when this was aired, coming up 60 still a favourite
quite advanced for a week old ! listening to dramas
I remember seeing this film many years ago when I was very young and i terrified I didn't dare go to bed But I enjoyed watching it a again
I first found out about this story from a collection of them called "Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural". If you have never read it I'd highly recommend it. The short story version of this tale was one of my favorites in that anthology. Decided to just type the title in and it led me here.
I found this tale in a collection of English Victorian Ghost Stories at a small town library. I was able to procure a paperback copy of the stories many years later. This is the first tale I go. The story has lingering terrifying moments.
@@wmpetroff2307 Yeah it really does. It has soem of the best tension building and one of the best payoffs in these types of stories.
I love this story too - the way the suspense builds at just the right pace, my heart was in my mouth despite the fact that I know it well. I was given a second hand copy of MRJames stories nearly 30 years ago when I discovered it , it’s a story I return to. I loved this interpretation of it. Brilliant sound effects from the BBC Radio Stereophonic Workshop!
Simon from Bitesized Audio on RUclips reads it very well if anyone fancies listening to it as an audio book.
I have the film with Michael Hordern and his solo readings of M.R. James but never knew this radio show existed! I thank you so much for posting this!
It's a gem! I'm delighted to have found it, quite by chance, tonight.
Oh man. So happy to have discovered this. One of my favorite stories and never even heard of this adaptation. It's terrific. Thank you SO much for posting it. Liked and subscribed.
Thanks for uploading this masterpiece. A play about a ghost performed by actors who are now ghosts themselves...
Have you heard of The haunted airwaves theory? It's a theory that eventually radio will be rebroadcasted classic radio shows. I thought at first that I came up with calling it that after hearing a radio adaptation of Ray Bradbury's The pedestrian but apparently it's been making the rounds.
This was broadcast the day after my 6th birthday. I have always been sorry that I heard it! It had a very profound effect on me. I have, since then, always been afraid of whistling in the dark, and the words "crumpled linen"...
Your story reminds me of the time I saw the premiere episode of The Twilight Zone, "The Cemetery". I was 5. I never forgot the character 'Portifoy' and the changing painting where the dead man rose from his grave and each day the painting showed him getting closer to the house. Scared the heck out of me!
@@jaceek2030 Funnily enough, I think that's based on another M R James story "The Mezzotint" or something similar. All good stuff!

I think you are correct. 🙂
That was Night Gallery
Fantastic post! Many thanks
Nice bedtime story to nod off to....
Great radio adaptation of the classic story. With the wonderful Michael Hordern, who was later in the 1968 tv version.
Probably one of the most perfect short ghost stories ever written.
This was a good play.
I did enjoy it but there is a short movie that you should watch. And I guarantee you will enjoy it
Excellent !
Excellent dramatisation 👍
Thanks for this
Ah, so this was done before the tv adaption. Thank you.
I love these stories, although I can't help but think of fat Alan Partridge when the ghost speaks.
Great performance from Hordern (with none of the actorly tics he used in the '68 film) and the production as a whole is very well done, but I'm afraid I have to join those who say the "ghost voice" hasn't aged well at all. I understand why they did it, but...
they were playing golf in another version
Digging around in the ruins he finds a whistle with something inscribed on it. Of course he blows it and summons, the thing. Kind of a, no not the basement! Moment. Good story though.
Is it just me or does the ghost sound a bit like a Carry On era Kenneth Williams?
its just you
Carry On Screaming ?
It’s very creepy indeed but I have to say that the ghosts voice reminded me of Mr Bean 😂
It’s a shame that radio producers so often cast an adult actress as a working class child. It never works.
It’s Felixstowe I think
I watched this aged 5 in 1970, been wearing nappies at night ever since.
The smell. The awful smell.
Micheal Hordern is excellent as always. It was all going very nicely until they played the rather robotic humanoid "ghost voice" near the end at 21.58, which took away the sense of menace and made it sound more near ridiculous... a pity.
copeyed from the film
Skidz Holeshot copied
The film was made in 1968 so it was not copied. Michael Hordern did star in both though.
the story was written 50 years before the film...
Oh! Michael horden just a few years before he did the telly version.
Michael said he was suggested for the role of the second doctor when William Hartnell was leaving.
