I learned "The Spring of 65" from a field recording of J.D. Cornett. My instrument is a minstrel style fretless banjo by Terry Bell. My strings are Aquila "New Nylgut" tuned cGCFG (A=432 Hz).

Mr Hicks are you going to be doing a lesson on this piece.
I haven't filmed a lesson on this one, but the tab is here: www.patreon.com/posts/spring-of-65-tab-95394783
I woke up one morning in the Spring of '65
I felt myself quite lucky to be found alive,
I worked up my team my business to pursue
Instead of hauling four loads I only hauled two.
I got so drunk at Harper I couldn't haul no more
The men a'telling jokes I laughed 'til I was sore,
The grocer being open the money spending free
Soon as a glass was emptied another filled for me.
I picked up my saddle and I strolled out to the barn
Catching some old grey not meaning harm,
I climbed upon her back and rode so very still
I scarcely drew a breath 'til I reached the Laurel Hill.
I met an old acquaintance whose name I won't tell at all
He told me where that evening there's going to be a ball,
We dillied and we dallied 'til at last we did agree
To meet again that evening where the fiddle was to be.
I'll tell all you good people how our party did commence
Four jolly boys got on the floor to dance,
The fiddler being willing the whisky being strong
He played "The Crippled Kingfisher" about ten hours long.
I see the morning star boys I guess we've danced enough
We'll spend another hour paying cash-for-cuff,
We'll go back to our plows we'll whistle and we'll sing
We never will be guilty of another such a thing.
Come all you newsy women who scatter news about
Don't spread no tales about us we're bad enough without,
Don't tell no tales upon us to kick up any fuss
You've been guilty of the same thing perhaps a whole lot worse.
@CliftonHicksbanjo I don't know if you will see this I was wondering if someday you would try to play pretty boy Floyd by woody Guthrie on the banjo I've never heard it played on banjo as soon as woody heard it on the radio that Floyd was killed he started jotting the lyrics down
Shame
That banjo is insane. They should put you in a movie sound track. Your just getting better and better
What a fantastic idea, belongs on a movie like 'Jeremiah Johnson, all America deserves to hear this man's voice. As an Englishman he represents the true voice of America for me,it's like being in a time machine when he sings & plays,he's a walking, talking archive.
You prolly don’t remember but I’m a teenager that sent you a picture of great grandpas old banjo a while back to ask about its age and I got it repaired and learned to play over the last year or so… I just started making an octagonal tack head banjo in my highschool shop. Thanks mr hicks!
Man alive those strings sound amazing on that instrument .
I really do enjoy a tasteful banjo accompanied by a simple song sung with obvious strong conviction.
A pickin' howdy! Wind was stupid here today.
Mr. Hicks, this is the 1st video I've seen of you that wasn't Old Leather stocking.
My wife and I agree that you're a lot younger than what we'd thought.
I appreciate you keeping this music alive! It kind of touches my soul!
Thank you!
Carpet bagger at best
@@theprivateer4961 you're probably a yankee yourself
If I had more than these arms of mine, I'd raise more than this pint for this song. Songs like this are the closest we can get to a time machine. The emoting voice and the twanging banjo, ah. Bliss. Thank you kindly Clifton!
Best banjo I’ve heard all week
Born in November actually. Great stuff here.
That banjo looks like it has a story to tell.
Seen your photographs from your military past days bless you thanks for
sharing them
😊🎉😊🎉
Love the banjo music. Stirs my soul!
I like that banjo sound a lot. It sounds like going back time
Where ya been, bud? Haven't seen you for a long time. ALWAYS nice to see a new video from you...!!!
I lead an archaeological survey crew. This year we've worked in Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, and now Arkansas.
Are ya back in there close to Buffalo National Forrest again this year? I'd so, it's a beautiful time to be there with dogwoods bloomin, turkey getting fired up and Morel mushrooms coming in! The Ozarks are beautiful in the spring!
Just curious, do you ever get to sneak away yo Mountain View while you're in Ark? The "Pickin Park" and around the square has alot of good folk/bluegrass/ol' time music, and has since the 1800's. I'm sure you're already aware, but many call it the folk music capital of the world.
Its not too far from my vacation home, so I spend alot of time there.
First time I heard a version of this song was back in the early ‘70s by the Holy Modal Rounders on their “Good Taste is Timeless” record. Loved your take on an old song.
I have missed you
We all missed you.
So am i dear friend like Brother to me and werry nice music
Did he ever tell you about the time he was suspected of treason when he was in Iraq? Did he mention he never saw combat but lied about it when he got back to the states? Just curious
Awesome banjo style from an astonishing banjoman
I was wondering when we would get another. Thank you for what you do.
The return of the king
Enjoyed this very much! GREAT entertainment, Clifton! Thanks for doing t h is! Peace, Charles
Man, that banjo sounds SWEET!!
The phantom shi... banjo player 🎵🎶
You’re amazing, please keep doing what you’re doing❤️
I like that instrument. Cool piece of wood used for that neck, too
Thanks. It's an early 2000s Terry Bell kit banjo.
Another Fine and Classical song from the Heart of reality. And done in a proper way of Spirit! Kind Thanks Clifton! Ain’t nothin like Banjo Hicks! Many Blessings! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Awesome. That's a sweet looking banjo, man.
Great performance 👍
Fantastic
Binging banjo videos til I get another banjo for myself, or find my old one. (It was stollen this week. What the hell who steals a banjo?)
Edit-
Got a new banjo arriving today. We'll. It's late 50s but it's new to me
A jerk with good taste
@PotterPossum1989 hahaha. True. It wasn't valuable. But it was unique. And I'll miss it.
Wow! Loved it!
Thank you. I love your music.
Awesome, as always, Clifton.
Hey, I just wanted to say I love your renditions of these old songs. I've long been a fan of Doc Watson, Ralph Stanley, Bill Monroe and more recently started listening to Jerry Garcia and David Grisman playing the old tunes as well as the New Lost City Ramblers. I got inspired to start playing around with the mandolin too... At any rate it's very cool to hear you keeping these tunes alive and doing it well!!
I could hear the fiddle in my head as you played and sang the song. Very nice
Happy New Year, Clifton! Looking forward to more music and stories this year. And more puppy dogs.
2 finger style! nice.
Very well done Mr. Hicks!
Very nice. Thanks.
Good stuff !
I love it!!!
There he is! That Bell Boucher is gritty and growly in that low modal tuning. Great as always!
Great stuff! I love that Banjo! Thanks! 🙂😎
fabulous mate! love from Australia
Awesome 👏 thank you!!!!
I just wanna be as skilled as you
I’ve only heard this played in double c, we played it kind of like battle hymn of the republic. Great picking bud.
Very nice!
Im not quite sure on the legal stuff, but i think you would absolutly kill "Youll Never leave Harlan Alive" would love to hear you cover it
Awesome. As it always is brother 🪕🪕🪕🪕🪕🪕🪕❤
Awesome tune sir!
Perfect!
Clifton to the moon!
Been a minute.
Missed your Saturday uploads
Always quality performances Clifton. . Want me a nylon string banjo now.
I have been listening to Banjo music for years, I've been listening to you since I found your channel for a year. I have finally got a banjo. I see you offer resources to learn the banjo. How do you suggest I begin this journey?
I offer an introductory course at BanjoHeritage.com and a RUclips playlist titled Beginner Banjo has a bunch of stuff.
sweet job
I love the sound this one makes over your other you use.
Sounds great buddy 😊
I just listened to 3hours of your songs through an auto playlist, You alone have piqued my interest in this genre.
"O'Death" is the first one i heard, bloody awesome songs mate.
Nice, have been missin your Patreon posts
Nice ❤
Hell fire.
Yes
Hey Clifton, you still doing work around Buffalo in Arkansas? If so its been cold work, it was 0° when i got up this morning.
One of these times, if you do go back to the area, you need to come to Mountain View. I think you'd enjoy it. Maybe you've been already. But its wonderful trout fishing on the river and some really good local musicians. The whole town centered around folk/bluegrass music.
I've been mostly in Mississippi and Tennessee l, but am actually heading out soon for the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas.
Performed on MOUNTAIN MUSIC OF KENTUCKY, J.D. Cornett
Every person is good at some particular thing. I would most certainly say you are a good banjo player. How many years of playing did it take for you to have the "ah-ha" moment, the turning point in your playing where you switched from a novice to a decent banjo player?
I started at 13. Was playing and singing at 16.
Folk-noir / Dark Americana…🪕
This guy's good. Kinda reminds me of Old Leatherstocking a little bit.
Off topic: I just saw an old Henry Fonda movie…”The Long Night” (1947). It was weird there’s a resemblance. But Fonda cant play banjo. 😂
👀super
Thank you ❤
Bless you. Cheers from Brussels
made my day!
Wondering what kind of strings are used here on this great banjo?
Aquila 1892 "New Nylgut"
Thanks Clifton!@@CliftonHicksbanjo
Long time no see, welcome back 👍🏻
very nice
thank you
take care
Is this your song written as if you were the man sung about?
Very professional
What a banjo! Great sound. 12"pot?
13"
Yeah, I build. It’s like a bass banjo.. very cool. Who built it?
@@katfishkobain8809 that's a Terry Bell Replica Boucher banjo. It's not a bass banjo it's natural tuning is low A but he has it tuned to G even lower.
@@Popcorn_Kernel hey, thanks. Is there such a thing as a bass banjo? I was just commenting on the sound.
@@katfishkobain8809 yes there are Bass banjos, and cello banjos. Gold Tone makes both they also make a 5 string cello banjo.
You gotta tell us what hat brand you wear
Label wore off years ago. I think it's an old London Fog.
nice...thnx m8
жалко что на тебя вороны не садяться когда так играешь классно бы смотрелься
Need to get my hands on a fretless. You ever goof with a longneck?
I've made a couple long necks. Search RUclips for Clifton Hicks + "long neck" they should be easy to find.
longnecks are great if you have to play in a bunch of tunings with a single instrument.
but otherwise you can just tune your regular banjo down to whatever lower tuning you want
Oh, Hell yeah.
Missed you
I like it. The song is notthing special. But, I like the sound of that banjo
Do you play music festivals
Haven't been to a festival in years. Am too busy, and never fit in anyway.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo well I don't know how far you are from marion, Illinois
But we would love to have you. I think you would fit in with our crowd. It's a 420 fundraiser for a local no-kill shelter
You sure have that break in your vocals down. It's almost like the start of a yodal.
😂4:51-5:03
Hi Clifton!
I hope you are well!
I wanted to ask you if I could make contact with you? I moved to WY to pursue a PhD in psychology (and hopefully join the USMC) from the Middle East and have gotten close with many Iraq veterans.
I have a plethora of important questions that I have asked people who have been in Iraq, or served under similar circumstances. If you would be willing this would be very helpful. If so, I'll explain myself a little more. - Odd platform of digital footprints here on RUclips!
Thanks!
We're back
I know this is strange but there's a black metal song with a banjo solo of all things, the song is myr and the band is taake.
sounds a lot like Naomi Wise sped up a bit.
play freebird
This guy lied about his service in the military. He's a perfect example of stolen valor.
Wait so this guy is really racist?
Fantastic
