for the partial upgrade to 1080p - the situation is definitely improved, but the image quality is not what one would come to expect from that setting, I must regretfully say. Still, a move in the right direction, that's the important thing!
If the reveal had been that this entire movie was a dream that Florence had while binge watching movies on Netflix, all the reveals that came from better films would be more entertaining.
If this movie wasn’t going to bother to be subtle with its messaging it could’ve at least been a star-studded broad satire a lá Don’t Look Up … My favorite moment had to be the “whose world is this? It’s ours!” chants morphing into “It’s Alice!” Yes, we get it Olivia, you’ve read a certain little-known Lewis Carroll work.
The more I think about this movie the more awful it gets. Olivia is really bad injecting themes and metaphors. They either don’t work well, or they hit you over the head like a sledge hammer.
This movie was kind of a waste of time, unless you want to see an earnest attempt at social commentary that ends up a nonsensical mess. I think this film would have been better if it was directed by a woman who has lived a normal life instead of a Hollywood star whose experiences with sexism are likely somewhat limited.
@@majorlazor5058 Yeah if you read about Olivia Wilde's adolescence, she was apparently sitting across the table from world-famous celebrities and thinkers on a regular basis. Both her parents were journalists, and from what I gather pretty successful ones. I think she grew up in DC. Yeah she did, and Christopher Hitchens was one of her babysitters.
My biggest gripe with this movie is that no one has real motivation to do anything. Why does Chris Pine want a challenger at all? Why does Gemma Chan suddenly turn against her husband after defending him so fervently? Why does Florence Pugh go after the plane crash so easily after we just had a whole scene where she agreed to not venture into the desert? How did Harry Styles get that promotion (and if it's all a simulation anyway, why not program him some better choreography to go with the accent)? You can explain it all away as bait & switches or make up deeper backstory, but nothing here feels earned. Also, they could have simply added the red airplane to the hypnosis footage if they were so obsessed with that image! But I must remember what you taught me: don't review the movie they didn't make.
You just misinterpreted what happened. This movie isn't very original. It's a remake of Stepford Wives. Except the wives get matrixed and enslaved instead of murdered and replaced. And the husbands manage to think of themselves as heroic providers instead of owning sex-bots that can take care of the home. But it has much less flaws than you think. The plane isn't real. She's just imagining it, because she's subconsciously aware that something is wrong and the "plane crash" gives her an excuse (gotta help survivors) to get to the exit (no coincidence that the "plane crash" went into that direction. Cult leader welcomes the "challenge" because he's full of himself. He thinks he is superior to women. Plain and simple. I could easily think of a couple of real life examples.
I really loved the immersion into this high style cinematography in the vein of la piscine, and adored Florence Pugh's performance. I feel like you guys are totally overthinking this one; but I still appreciated your review!
Don’t ask why but I can hear Tommy Wiseau as Johnny say “Don’t worry darling” when I think about the name of this movie. I can also picture him sitting in the car in that scene screaming

@@BreakfastAllDay I was literally about to tweet you guys wondering when the review is coming out and then I saw it was here. Glad I can finally say it. 🤣
@@MattB0610 I think the Antebellum twist worked better, because we at least see the characters outside their captive state. The twist in Antebellum was more about where this was time travel or not. This was like … hey there is a twist at the end and it’s about a cyberpunk shared dream space that’s not explained at all why it exists.
I’d love to learn more about the journey from first draft to the final film. I’m sure there were aspects of the film that originally made sense or were explained better that became lost in the re-writes. Perhaps a more experienced or better filmmaker would have had the courage to remove a set piece if it no longer made sense after a re-write. For example, maybe there was originally a point to the plane crash or the egg thing which was lost, however the filmmakers wanted to keep what they thought was a great moment/revelation despite it now having no purpose? I completely agree with Alonso about the female orgasm thing. If this world is a male fantasy, sex would probably be a lot different (penis would definitely be involved). Or is this actually a female fantasy simulation? Doesn´t make sense. About the script, I think they should´ve developed the Margaret character a lot more. I mean, we never see her being friends with Alice at all... why would Alice be so upset about her? It´s not like they were really friends in the first place.
I think if you want to keep the women captive in the simulation world you need to give them things that give them pleasure and don't cause them to question their existence, ie, nice houses, extravagant shopping and orgasms. That's the most logical explanation for the sex choices.
Okay, I finally watched this (needless to say there was other films last year I wanted to watch before it and ... I was right) and they just don't really dwell on explore anything! It's just kinda there. I wanted more Frank, more stuff...more of something. I was so "meh" after it was over.
Rod Serling would have found a way to better integrate the Styles/Pugh surgeon-computer nerd business into the comformist world we're watching; this bit sets the movie on its head without fully explaining what we've been viewing and more importantly--what is the point of it all? Of all the pop tunes in the film, it could have ended with Patti Page singing, "Is That All There Is?"
There's been so many of films that they've borrowed elements from, Stepford and The Matrix that Alonso mentioned, The Thirteenth Floor, Serenity (not the good one, yeah that one), etc. The technicals are immaculate, but it's a hodgepodge mess of a story.
It's all about controlling these women's bodies and minds. There's constant messaging about the value of order. The ballet class "literally" gets them in formation and reinforces the message that they have to be a certain way with absolutely zero wiggle room. It also shows that a woman is in on this entrapment and is happy to do this to her fellow women in the name of power. Alice's husband as well as the other men in this town are 1nc3ls who got all of their wishes come true, and the movie helps show, once again, how insane their worldview is. I also like that it borrows from a long tradition of similar stories including Bluebeard.
I actually didn't mind it but found, like you, that the ending was disappointing and confusing. I also wondered how she escaped those leather restraints which tied her to the bed once she escapes the matrix. With Harry Styles dead, the movie would turn into Gerald's Game.... ? Gemma Chan, too. Still, I don't understand all the hatred directed at the film. There have certainly been much worse films this year.
So actually throughout the movie, I was thinking Harry Styles’s acting wasn’t terrible. I was assuming he’d be like a shell of a person and even a robot or something, so it made sense why he presented as empty and boring. HOWEVER, once I learned the twist and that he facilitated them being in the VR and had all the stressors of living this double life etc, it totally ruined his performance for me. He should’ve shown hints of this anguish and panic about needing the facade to continue. I thought Shia would’ve been miscast as the suave 50’s husband; but think he would’ve don’t really well with playing the pained incel and actually would’ve been way better in this role!

This movie is so badly made and boring, and frankly toxic.....this anti- male rhetoric is getting BORING frankly......its almost like what people who lived that way in 1950s were what incels?? So our grandads were all incels? This projection of time and place is in such bad tsste....sorry...glad didnt watch this...throughly enjoyed the review though!!
If you die in the simulation, you die and real life (Matrix rules). However, if you are a women who kills a man, Victory Project will come find the woman's body in real life and kill them.
Then who would choose that simulation? All you have to do is accidentally fall down some stairs or have an accident and your dead. At least with the matrix they are freedom fighters.
Alonso is right. The sexual aspects of the film would make sense if the premise is reversed. The 'incel' or toxic male simulation would involve, I'm sorry to say, over-the-top hardcore sex to satisfy man.
Your review provided the logic and the entertainment that the movie was deficient in. Still, it does not sound as bad as (so I've read) Emperor Palpatine destroying stardestroyers with his thoughts, and from lightyears away (I am embarrass that I know this much)....which makes the Star Wars saga pointless--e.g., Obi Wan could have just _crush_ the dead star from the beyond the grave (oh, forgive me, as a _force ghost_ ). Look, people: movies are made by people--people who are just as, if not more, lazy, ignorant, talentless as we are--only difference is we are paying them to make more and more of this stuff. Now, _that_ is the weird part.

Harry Styles can’t act lol
Aww. He looks great though. The camera loves him.
I am just throwing it out there but I'm going to say it the author wrote this book with his interpretation of what a woman would want
Thanks, Ann Marie!
Sad, but good point.
The fantasy for these men is control, not a harem.
This was even dumber than that McConaughey movie, Serenity
Ha, thanks for watching.
