    I live in Thailand and bought a similar retro gaming console on Lazada for about $20 US. It has dual wireless controls, and the console plugs directly into an HDMI port and has a usb 5 volt cable used to power the unit. It has over 10,000 games organized by name under the type of console that they were originally played on. Games can be saved as favorites so that you do not have to search through 1000's when you wantto play and games in progress can be saved as well. I have had no issues at all, every game I have played has loaded and played flawlessly and I do not experience any lag with the wireless controllers. Additionally, after playing for over a year now, the controllers are not breaking down. I consider it one of the best $20 I have ever spent.

    The question is: Which retro-gaming setup is best for old school cRPG/JRPG content? (and where did the dice go? LOL.)
    Honestly, PS1 and PS2 era emulation is king for me - after the classic retro-home computers (along with Wii, for a certain Scooby Doo game... don't judge me! ;) ).
    I'd love to see weird emulation on this stuff too, like PPC Mac era stuff (I modded the crap out of Baldur's Gate for pre-Intel Macs... no, it wasn't easy, at all - because I did it during quarantine in 2020, sigh. I actually need to follow up on that with the GemRB Infinity Engine emulator... it runs on everything, sort of ).
    Anyway, thanks my main Dweeb for your positive enthusiasm and fun videos.

I should probably just take the time to learn them huh :P

      The shoulder buttons rattle about as much as the original GameBoy Advance's d-pad and face buttons, but that won't be happening with index fingers resting across them.
      Feels a little heavier than I was anticipating, probably due to the battery. But weighs about as much as my smartphone.
      After just recently getting an 8bitdo Zero 2 last week, the only thing I'm not a complete fan of is the RG35XX's d-pad. But otherwise, this will be replacing my Steam Link and Classic SNES Mini for retro gaming on the TV and on the go.

      N64 will be hit or miss. I'd say probably 90% will run problem free. If a game you want isn't working great you can try changing the resolution to 320x240, and changing the emulation core (some cores work better for certain games than others).

      Yeah that's why I like them. I have emulators and ROMs on my PC that I can easily use on my tv, but more often than not when I want to play some quick retro games especially if I have guests over I will just fire something like this up. Also it's nice to have a dedicated device for emulation. Maybe I'm just using them as a crutch so I don't have to bother setting emulators up and configuring them myself 🤔

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Год назад +1

      Which PS emulation are you referring to? Is that like emulating old PS1 games on a PS5 in an official way or something? It wouldn't surprise me if it lags behind community driven emulation. When these big companies offer old games on new hardware so often the ports and/or emulation is half-assed compared to the free emulators we have made by, you know, enthusiasts who actually CARE about creating a good experience rather than just slapping something together as a cash grab 🤑

    I bought this based on this review. Thanks, it's been a blast. However, my Emuelec options (version 4.6-test-07082022) doesn't have an "Advanced Settings" area that I can use to change the emulator? Ibelieve I've opened all the options to look for it and can't seem to find out how to change it. The main reason is I can't play the MAME Cyberball game. It doesn't load. Also, how does one disable to menu that pops up when you press the joysticks down?

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Год назад +1

      The advanced system settings are available by pressing the SELECT button when you're on the games list of a system.
      If you want to change the hotkeys for opening the retroarch menu, the easiest way is to open a game, then bring up the menu, go to quick settings, select "close content", then go to out to the main retroarch menu, then settings, then 'hotkeys', and in there you can set the hotkey settings to whatever you want. Then, when you're done, you can go to the main menu and go to 'configuration file' and select 'save current configuration'. This SHOULD make it so it works across all cores. If it doesn't then (annoyingly) you'll have to do this setup for each core, but instead of saving the configuration file you'll 'save core override' from the quick menu.
      Hope this helps!

    So I have a question. When it comes to handheld emulators (i have several), it always seems to be best to replace the stock firmware with a custom firmware. I've done this with every handheld except one (RG353M) although I tried on that one too and it just didn't work out. However, when it comes to these TV boxes (I don't have any of these), no one ever seems to recommend replacing the stock firmware. Is it always that good? I don't think I've ever seen anyone recommend that ever with any of these.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Год назад +1

      Well Emulation Station sort of is a custom operating system. These devices come with android installed and ES is a 3rd party app that is installed on top of it. I think it's just such a great highly polished OS made by the community already, it's probably not going to be outperformed by anything for a while.

      Yes it was Libretro: Parallel N64 32B and I set both integer scaling to on and set enable max performance to yes. Also on latency reduction I set run ahead frames to 1 and set use second instance for run ahead to on. I set auto frame delay to on and variable refresh rate to on. Once those settings are applied the game runs great until you are going really fast then there's a tiny audio delay but no video problems. Also I noticed that you have to go to game settings and set these settings for the nintendo 64 settings or it will default to what is in the game settings for nintendo 64 if you just set it per game.

    Is there one of these emulation consoles that will play up to and including GameCube? Something not insanely expensive.

    S905X4 better than S912 for emulation gaming?

  • @greenprotag
    @greenprotag Год назад +1

    Wow. Aggressive there at the end... are you ok? For $100 it doesn't seem bad, but I also feel like you could get more going custom. This might be perfect for the pick up and play aspect and that's perfectly valid, but I always tell people to consider buying the hardware it's VERY easy to set up. Consider a used office PC which Techdweeb has also done, OR if you want the TV box spend a little more for a Nvidia shield and get MASSIVE performance boost + alll those amazing android TV features, AI upscaling, and amazing game streaming support. Sometimes something you already own like an Xbox, or laptop, or raspberry pi can be used to run retro games. Xbox? What do I mean xbox? Yes there are stand alone emulators AND Retroarch for Xbox. The new Xbox Series S may already be on your shelf and its a powerhouse emulation device. I think even gamecube runs well. LOTs more options open up if you are willing to watch some tutorials, roll up your sleeves, and get to hackin'

      Yeah I'll be fine. I just need some Burger Time to chill out.
      I'm genuinely surprised at the number of people who don't have any desire or skill to download their own ROMs and make a library of their own. I get a ton of comments from people who buy these things because they come with the games pre-installed, and apart from adding their favorite game once or twice they don't bother editing the ROM library in any way. These devices are kind of in the no man's land between enthusiasts and novices.

    • @greenprotag

      It's a realm between Lazy & Cheap. Like too lazy to build a library, but also too cheap to spring for a premium product. That is where it lives. I think I would personally spend $50 on a Miyoo or RG35xx that COMES loaded with games, but have the option of unlocking more potential via firmware customization and library selection. The home console provides that nice couch co-op experience, but I have had near instant access to that experience via PC/ android emulation for so long. I kind take for granted what I had to struggled through and learn to get to a point where I can just MAKE that type of experience appear from thin air.

    Hyper base king or this retro monster????

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Год назад +1

      King is more powerful, but more expensive. Monster is cheaper, but not as powerful. If you care a lot about N64 or Dreamcast then the King will leave you more satisfied. If not, then the monster will probably be all you need.

    Hello your channel is great I was wondering if your can help me find a emulator that is has arcade games like Marvel vs. capcom 2 , alien vs. predator, and all of arcade hits of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s

    • @TechDweeb

      Most of these retro emulation boxes have all the old arcade stuff. You can see the game lists of this box in the description.

  • @BURRITO44

    Could you please stop with all the cutesy stuff ? Please stop saying “ holes.” They are called “ ports.” Most of the reviews on Amazon are negative. So how could you possibly recommend this android box ??? You did. It deep dive enough !!! If you want a decent emulation console, then you will need to spend at least $200 and up. There are way better emulation game consoles.
