It’s doing great, especially considering you are heating the outdoor ambient air to that temperature. To be more efficient, run another tube to the intake of the heat exchanger and into the tent at floor level if possible. But seems like it’s overheating you already lol.
Thanks for that. I have made so many mods since I filmed this. I do have the intake on an extension now and I sewed a nice flap/ hole at the ice level so there is almost no pipe exposed. Thanks for watching

I got the exact same heater a year ago and that thing has been a game changer for sure. I live in Minnesota and really enjoy winter camping now. My remote doesn't work and was wondering if you knew how to program it. Great video by the way.
There are 3 to 4 different firmwares for the heaters, each one has a slightly different button press pattern to pair it to the heater. RUclips videos, Look up pairing the remote to the diesel heater,
I don’t usually because where I live the stations supply winter diesel from the pumps. If they didn’t I would for sure. Or I could extent the fuel line and move tank into my tent.
A Volkswagen/Audi 420DIN battery has a 75Ah rating, from 12.6V. That's also an AGM battery. 520DINAGM rated 92Ah. 520DINLAB 110Ah. These heaters seem to pull around 10-15amps when starting, on account of the glow plug, once hot and burning, they drop to around 3-5amps as it is only a fan and fuel pump running at that point. Ball park roughness, 3x tool battery units minimum needed to have enough amps to fire the unit, and run for any length of time. 3x6=18ah @ 20v. Say 15Ah on the 12v side of your converter because of losses and firing. 15Ah ÷ 3A= 5h run time...ish. Cold battery cells will lower that run time. I, personally, would be curious to see how long a heater runs off a big jackery box or something of that nature.
You should try having the heater inside the tent and having the exhaust going outside, then the heater doesn't need too heat up cold air from outside. Only need too reheat the air inside. i have my heater in the tent when I'm out on the ice. Nice video👍
Also I don’t like to take a chance of any of the exhaust fumes being inside my tent if I wanted to do the way you suggest you could just bring the intake from out from inside the tent and still leave the whole heater outside there’s just too many safety factors that are an issue having the heater inside your tent but I appreciate what you’re saying
Both of these people are wrong on so many levels. They don't understand that these heaters were DESIGNED to be inside of the tent. You are supposed to run the exhaust outside. It does NOT leave a diesel smell in the tent; in fact, there is little to no smell at all. Wrap your exhaust properly and there won't be any fumes in the tent. Use the heater the way it was intended.
I use a standard deep cycle that I use for trolling in the summer. Its a rv-31 100 ah. I can’t recall how many litres my main tank is but I didn’t add fuel to it till the end of day two. Probably had enough for another night but I added some just in case. It was really great on fuel. Even when I had it dialed to half for a bit a few times to warm up more and run tests.
@@reelisticoutdoors4358 Thanks for the fast response! So in the end of the video you say you ran it for the 3 days on the 100AH battery the entire time, but then you mention the generator. Just to make sure I understand, the 100AH hour battery almost lasted you 72 hours on the ice running the heater between 1 - 5 (low to medium) continuously? Or am I missing something. I am looking into converting to diesel and want to estimate what size lithium ion battery I would need to run this for occasional overnights. I am thinking a 50AH would work, but I am not certain.
@@benjaminoliver6734 I'm planning the same sort of thing. Just a rough estimate: Figuring 2ah for start and shutdown cycle (probably less than 1ah in reality but better to over estimate). Low they run approx 0.5a on high approx 3a. 48ah would give 16 hours on high and 96 hours on low. If you recirculate the heated air you could run it on a lower hz setting and have a higher outlet temp than heating outside air. You should amp test your heater on various settings to try and calculate run times based on the battery capacity. If you are testing with a lead acid battery the amperage will differ a bit as the operating voltage of lithium is slightly higher. If you are going to recirculate the air I would use a CO detector in the area you are heating. You can also calculate fuel burn based on pump volume per pulse should be etched on side of pump. Hz on display is pulses per second. Sorry to run on in my post hope it is helpful and makes sense lol One RUclipsr who has a lot of info including fuel burn at various Hz settings is John Mck 47. There are a bunch of youtubers videos on amperage draw but many of them differ significantly.
@@benjaminoliver6734 Well its a little of both. As i was a long way from civilization and it was cold out i didnt want to use that as a test to see if it will die in the middle of the night, I ran my genny a couple times over the three days to charge my fishfinder and lighting batteries, so i plugged it in to the Deep cycle as well.
Whats in the window is rolled rubber gasket material. I am cutting a hole in my tent this year ground level. Sew a flap over it for when not in use. I want to eliminate most of the hose.
I actually get less from that end as it’s being pushed away very well. The way the wind swirls we had more exhaust com in when we had it out the side. The only fool proof way would be to extent the exhaust or channel the intake

I use Kerosene in my diesel heater, with a cap full of 2 cycle engine oil mixed in. It burns hot n clean!
So does diesel lol. People heat their houses with untaxed diesel. No need for kerosene.
I dont't ever comment. But thanks for the no bullshit video.. Great !
Omg thanks so much. Finally someone gets me . Lol
Could you share a link for your diesel heater. I like the remote option. Thanks!

Do you need to put an additive into the diesel to stop it gelling up in the cold ?

What size battery do you use for it? Is the battery self contained in the heater?
I can’t remember, somewhere in this thread I think I answered it. But it’s my battery for my trolling motor
Can you share the specs of your battery? How many liters did you use total for 3 days?

What size is the heater in kw's
Great video. What mats are you using in your ice hut? Is that cork board that you used for the window opening?
I throw down tarp then plywood then foam squares and a roll up mat

What kind of battery are you running?
You’ll need to read earlier comments. I can’t remember
Top man!
try putting the muffler pipe on the other side because that end is for fresh air.

Sweet
15° c or f?
-15c .
Well let’s just say I am in metric all my temps are in Celcius
On of those times I should have watched the whole video before asking. That's pretty darn warm out on the ice!
At -15C you didn’t experience any gelled diesel?
Nope. Where I live the diesel from the pump has winter additives .
What is the kw of heater?
5
So if I'm here right you only got it to 16°? That's not warm dude
on low16c when it’s -20c outside it sure as hell is.
That's Celsius lol not Fahrenheit
16C is a hotbox for ice fishing honestly, unless you plan on never leaving your shelter and sit in your underwear .... which is fine too lol
I agree.
Celsius right?
Best thing is no moisture from propane!!!! Lol
Totally, but I did find the temp limit this weekend.
