The start of Horse Nation still gives me goosebumps just like the very first time I heard it
nothing refills my soul more than this ep taking me back to these gigs.
& Now there touring as The Death Cult ....see u at a gig zooon !!!
and it's great we get The Cult version, too, two excellent versions of the song (though if I had to choose i think i would go with this one.)
We grew up in the Orange County California Punk scene.. older punks called us Death Rocker.. yes there was goth kids, but they listen to really soft music, human drama, London after Midnight etc.. and the Boys put make-up on.. skirts etc.. we also had to Fight for everything,, wanna wear creepers? Monkey boots ? .... as a kid we had to defend our Look, I know it sounds trivial,, at 14 it's your entire world.. and made us who we are to this very day.. this music is the soundtrack of my childhood and defiant nature.. peace humans,, life is Way more excepting now.. 1985 thru 92.. was violent for us fringe punks..
I find it interesting that this distinction was made in the US. In the UK, I didn't hear the term "death rock" until around 1992/93, when it was used specifically as a synonym for "goth" in America (i.e: the reporter's logic was that Americans call goth "death rock"). No such differentiation existed in the United Kingdom. At least in the UK, the term "goth" was common currency by 1983. The October 1983 issue of ZigZag magazine, featuring Sex Gang Children on the cover, as well as bands such as the Sisters, Death Cult, X-Mal, the Cocteaus etc. used the word at least twice to refer to musical style and fans alike, showing that the readers already knew what it meant. The Death Cult European Tour piece proclaims that, in Berlin, there were "loads of goths" present for the concert. There were other uses prior to this, too. Joy Division's sound was described as "gothic", UK Decay used the term circa 1980/81 and talked (tongue-in-cheek) about how they should only play churches and release gargoyle-shaped records. Steve Keaton’s article in "Sounds" on UK Decay related to that in early 1981 was entitled “The Face Of Punk Gothique”. In addition, Ian Astbury jokingly christened Andi Sex-Gang "the gothic goblin" and his followers "goths" around 1982/83. Andi lived in a building called Visigoth Towers in Brixton and, according to Ian, was always listening to "dark" music, such as Edith Piaf. Death Cult resided in Brixton at the time, as well, and there was a close-knit community of groups who would play London regularly, including Sex Gang, Theatre of Hate / spear of Destiny, Play Dead and Death Cult. Bauhaus' LP "The Sky's Gone Out" was panned in a UK music paper (I forget which one) in 1982 via a review with the title "Goth-ick as a Brick" (itself a play on Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick"). Hence, there were plenty of uses from various sources (including Ian) between circa 1980 and 1983. By 1983, though, the term was in regular usage in the British press. Those who claim differently (for instance, Wayne Hussey) clearly missed that. The likes of Human Drama and London After Midnight, whom you mention, came much later, of course.
@Albrecht777 are these your words . Coming from a Jimi fan.. you sure know a lot about.. G Oth.. just saying..
It's what it was... I'm 51.. we have some material you can cut and paste.. if you'd like.. As far as Death Rock goes.. about LA..
Also good olde Dedicated a Set of Old 1st Album songs to the DeathRocker kids in the Audience when they played the Greece Amphitheatre..
Cheers.. I grew up here.. all 51 years.. my words are True. Because we lived them.. G Oth is still boring .. Joy Division is Post Punk . As is the lot you listed mostly..
But have at it...
My playlist will show my interest...
And I also like Jimi ..
@@AtZero138 Many thanks indeed for your friendly response, which is greatly appreciated. Yes, those are my words - apart from the direct quotations, of course. It's lovely to see another Jimi fan here. Before I got into what can best be termed "goth", my two favourite artists were Jimi Hendrix and The Police. Both remain inspirations, and I listen to some Jimi basically every day. As it happens, I would argue that a whole load of what one could reasonably call "goth" bands were influenced by Jimi. The beginning of "Ghost Dance" uses the same techniques that Hendrix pioneered on "1983" and "Moon Turn the Tides...", as I've mentioned elsewhere on this thread. And, whose hands are those playing guitar on the cover of the "God's Zoo" 12"? Ian appeared in a Jimi shirt for plenty of press photos circa 1985, too. Robert Smith is on record as saying that Hendrix inspires everything he does, as is Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke. The Sisters covered "Purple Haze" live in their early days. Naturally, the biggest connection is Christian Death, who covered "1983" on their LP "The Scriptures" and "Angel" on the "All the Love" album. In the UK, all the bands I listed were / are classed "goth", which doesn't make it boring, in my opinion! I understand that this was not necessarily the case in Los Angeles, but it was in Britain. I just find the difference in terminology to describe the same thing interesting. Much gratitude again for your reply, which has brightened my day. Anyway, I must fly - literally. I'm catching a 'plane later today. All the best to you. [Edit: I meant "'plane" and not "'plan"!]
@Albrecht777 I lament .. I've just recently, forced to sell my collection of Southern Death Cult, Death Cult etc.. and Sisters of Mercy.. Bauhaus.. Joy Division.. it's painful to even see this list as I type this
@@Albrecht777 ... Between the Goth Kids..

Fucking great, the atmosphere grabs you immediately into a dark and magical world. Best work from Astbury and pals as others stated. All musicians on this record are great but these Ray Mondo tribal drums are exceptionally good!
Sounds more like the Great Nations having a WAR PARTY
One of the best EPs ever
@@Gumshrud why you listening stop trying to cause trouble this music is great that's why you're here
For in sync crap there’s always today’s chart
Without a doubt, still stands the test of time, in 2023! 40 years old wow.
first time listening to this band, still on the first song and I might say this is one of my favorite things ever
Get the love album immediately
@@annnoel9819 No, he'll be disappointed for sure. I'll suggest to try Southern Death Cult instead
Southern Death Cult, Death Cult, The Cult.. lots of E.P.s and one official compilation of In studio love tracks, First Cult Album is my favorite of The Cult Dream Time.. cheers from Southern California
probably my favourite record of all time
Song list they had pre Cult is amazing. First i heard was the live ones. Violent versions. Hardly a note dropped at The Lyceum.
What an awesome slab of vinyl. Remember, this is a single, 4 fantastic tracks on one 12 " single...Astbury and Co never did better in my opinion.
Totally agree with you, even though Southern Death Cult is pretty good too. But this...they put so much heart and soul and spirit in it that you're immediately grabbed by the atmosphere of this record. I remember listening to this as a teenager and having the impression to step into a dark magical world
I liked southern death cult , also death cult both were good , the best track the cult did was spirit walker.
Bang on!
still got mine among others
Still have this beauty now framed and on the wall
Love horse nation so much
Let's dance !
yeah, Horse Nation is awesome. I remember back then plugging turntable into my mates bass amp, this sounded soo good! So very good!! It's one of the best tracks of all time for me. Everything about it. This was the best version of Horse Nation too. The bass and percussion - fantastic, the bells, guitar, voice,,, everything.. Powerful.
This is the best thing Astbury and Duffy have done in my opinion, would love to have seen Death Cult live
As great now as it was then, timeless, many awesome nights watching them live
Great band all down the years but this was the most pure and best.
Wish they continued with this sound a bit longer.
iRide uWatch yes...only 3 years these 4 were together as SDC,i read...anyway, heard of the Cult back from late 80s...but this???Fuckinggreat musc...my hubby likes the later stuff...its DC n SDC for me!
Well, they did! Of course! Ever heard of "Dreamtime"? 🙄
DecodeR the Dreamtime album has some good songs on it but it sounds watered down
they can lean toward this sound when live
If they did remain they would have been famous
Brothers Grimm and horse nation are one of my faves
TWO of your faves
when music was exciting
Billy's finest guitar work here classic ep
Miles Ahead at the time and such brilliant gigs.....Proper
Ian could sing anything and it would be awesome
Released in the days when vinyl ep's contained real quality music and not remix dub instrumental dance mix backwards version bollox.
This is real class.
And this is dear to my heart.
Midland Transport YOU SAID IT!!!!CHEERS N GOOD LIFE TO YOU.🤗
@Staff Trains quite so indeed... yes... and succinctly stated.... because of the guaranteed dismal contents i have developed a phobia of EP's... back in the days early 80's; music publishers were still an innovative force to be considered....
here and now i cannot abide by anything that lurks under the banner of 'dance' its just tantamount to a prefrontal
@@chrisbinckes2732 way to wicked smart !!
Actually incorrect, the 12" extended remix was in full flow at that time. Some were quite good. Plus dub Reggae rules !
@@pressureworks I was thinking exactly the same. There were plenty of 12" extended remixes about well before this came out.
Preston was a great drummer, loved with Theatre of Hate....Heroin got him in the end RIP
Agreed but I think ray mondo played on this?
@@davebrown8227 Absolutely correct mate
@@arminius4406 OK thanks
the best ep ever end of
A great EP from a great group!!
I use to have my one hour on air(radio) weekly. One day i decided to share The Cult history entire hour.💚
they played horse nation when we was saw them two years in Cardiff uni..
¡Excellent! I´m dancing right now, great band, thanks.
This is good, reminds me of the gun club.
I love guns !!
so many memories... top top band
the bass guitar on "christians" is great.
Lent this vinyl masterpiece to a so called mate in 85 and never seen again. Thanks, reminds me of mad days hitchhiking to see bands etc. Still think Nigel Preston there best drummer.
Nigel Preston dosn't play drums on this record. The drummer here is Ray Mondo
yes he is on this Nigel was their drummer Before Ray mondo they swopped with Sex Gang Children
Ray played on this song/EP. Nigel replaced him in the Summer of 83 and played on Gods Zoo.
oh no! your ex mate owes you something more than just a precious commodity.... this is a metaphysical gem.... remember the 6 degrees of separation there are only six persons between you and the thief. consolations and greetings from tasmania
I feel you. I fried the vinyl of this in a car moving in Florida..
Yes did know Damiano, was at Sheffield at one of first gigs he played. Made comment as Nige was a mate.
I've got this CD but it's a 6 track EP with the same cover and track listing apart from having Gods Zoo as the first track and then God Zoo (These Times) -which is a completely different version of God's Zoo. More like a 12"
If I remember correctly...
God Zoo "both" version were a 7inch ..
Makes sense to include it on a CD..
I got the original EP from SITUATION 2 record company before they release to BEGGARS BANQUET records.GHOST DANCE is my favourite.
I still have this saw them live few times in London they were the best as Death Cult Jamie Stewart great Bass player so underrated saw him couple of times in band he was in before Ritual good band.
Jamie was in my form at High school,an exceptional musician on almost any instrument, and Death Cult were fortunate to recruit such a talent. I feel privileged to have witnessed Jamie, and Ray, performing in both Ritual, and Death Cult.Nigel Preston was a gifted drummer, but Ray was on another level.
Mother Russia
Thank you x
Had this on vinyl
Never heard this before... l hear some Bauhaus in "ghost dance"... reminds me of "dark entries"
Maybe, but there's more Jimi Hendrix in the atmosphere. Listen to "1983" and "Moon turn the Tides, gently, gently away" from "Electric Ladyland". The intro to "Ghost Dance" uses exactly the same sounds that Hendrix pioneered on those tracks.
Also you can hear "Hanging garden" from the Cure in "Horse Nation" but yet they managed to have their own sound anyway
possibly the greatest single ever released...
Sounds like 1950's yet would rock the ears off someone in 2050
Blood is Thicker Than Water - We Are Bound Forever. :-)
Andy irons kissed by God
I can't believe it's not desert rock. It's something better.

Great production, & sound quality, especially on Horse Nation. Who was the Producer ??
Jeremy Green apparently
@@scotznotslopped-empir-1555 thank you !!
southerdeathcult the best
not too far off from Killing Joke or Bauhaus or Siouxsie and the Banshees. In fact I can easily imagine Siouxsie singing this instead of Ian. The rhythm section gets to shine a lot more than later Cult records.
Obviously lots of comparisons to Bauhaus and Siouxsie, but you know what other band started with this exact sound? Dead or Alive. Seriously, listen to Flowers.
Christians and Gods Zoo best work of Astbury saw them 5 times in the early 80s lost interest when Duffy went School of Rock and they sacked Jamie and Nigel.
Great tunes, but very one dimensional vocals.
i have never loved this EP and i dont know why. i love everything on the Southern Death Cult LP, i love both sides of the Death cult Gods Zoo single, i love every track on the first 2 or 3 Cult albums. but something about this EP i never got into, i LOVE Horse Nation. and i like parts of Christians and Ghost Dance, but i also dislike parts of Christians and Ghost Dance and i do not like Brothers Grimm at all.
Skip the fucking ADS.
2 OF THOSE BOLLOCKS.......YES..
Sounds like country music from a western film 😂😂🤮
