I first found the cult or Death Cult as they’d just changed in the 80’s in art school at Mansfield. Well I didn’t find them, my new girlfriend was a passionate fan, Jane. She introduced them and I was hooked. Saw them a few times live and they were amazing concerts. So forever underrated in the British rock culture. Jane tragically died in a car accident in the nineties which devastated me even though we were not together at the time. She was an amazing person and every time I hear these old songs I remember her and wish she could have had a life long enough to watch these old videos and tell her grandkids she was there. Good bless you Jane Owen. Xxx
I love Ian Astbury! One of the best frontmen of all time, those pipes, that style, so underrated, pure, raw, unadulterated rock and roll. Aww, the music of my youth. I miss it!
I was a student in Bradford and saw a poster for a gig in a pub we used to drink in (The Metropole). It was SDC, New Model Army and Joolz. I have seen many gigs since including of those bands but that unexpected one remains the best.
Played at a Rock Against racism gig in a school in their hometown Bradford around this time before they went to USA, and carried on playing while neo-nazis outside were throwing bricks through the skylights. Brave boys. I was a steward and terrified. First time I heard She Sells Sanctuary, Cant forget it!
I was djing at a teen club when the love album was released and all the punk kids loved it. I had been listening to S D C from the beginning and when I played faith no one could believe who they were.
I worked on one of their gigs during this period, like with this clip could hear the vocal stile Ian was aiming for, but couldn't quite pull off, but with a bit more practice he perfected it.
Saw them back in the day. Faith is a great track. The band went on to be getting the fear who I saw a few times. Strange that both only ever released one single
I have been a big call fan so I'm a few times never heard of this or saw this before thank you thank you thank you what a hidden gem for me it's like it's new all over again
Love Ian Astbury playing guitar it usually always goes wrong, he's so busy posing for the camera on fat man he misses the chord change and looks around stunned as the "real musicians" have moved on. Brilliant songs at the time, so different and fresh, blew my mind the first time i heard this.
@@Danimal77 i love the first few Cult albums, but The Southern Death Cult album is my favorite, and its not even a properly recorded actual album. i will always wonder how it would have sounded had they actually went into the studio with that lineup.
@@newwavepop I’ve always wished the same thing. Some proper album releases would’ve been great. I love The Cult but what they were doing during this era truly blows my mind. The Death Cult was really cool too.
Ian was such an Adam clone at this time, intense and a message of his own, but a clone none the less. Like Kings of the Wild Frontier on heroin with a bottle of jack thrown in.
I don't recall Adam having a mohawk. Clone? Just because of face paint and Those clothes ?? Adam was ALL about the ladies and Ian is anti establishment.
@@drewamasterpiece5268 Ian would tell you himself he was an Adam clone. Huge Ants fan in every way. Adam did become a bit of a parody of himself from Charming on. but from his early singles to KOTWF he was engaging and thought provoking with his lyrics, not his doing he was a looker. Ian did alright with the ladies himself, when he went more commercial with The Cult. Comparison to Adam is not an insult in any way.
If anyone knows what's up with Dave, let me know. He helped me out in 2012 in Hollywood. I'm doing well these days and would like to do something for him. Or at least say hi!

❤…rip Jane.
❤😢life can be very cruel at times
my sincere sympathies. The good thing is that you have something to remember her. You have a place and a soundtrack.
My condolences. It’s fascinating how we associate a time in our lives with the music of the day.
Southern Death Cult, Sisters of Mercy, New Model Army.
When West Yorkshire was the centre of the music universe 💜🖤💜🖤💜🖤
All Power Super Bands!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Ian Astbury! One of the best frontmen of all time, those pipes, that style, so underrated, pure, raw, unadulterated rock and roll. Aww, the music of my youth. I miss it!
Ian Astbury is my favorite Englishman of all time.
unpolished ...raw...amazing
yeah, morrison vibes but his own thing too, powerful voice, so many bands have weak vocals..
You must be joking. He's fucking awful live. Overrated..
And he's only gotten better. His voice deeper and more mature.
Can’t wait to see death cult
On stage again. I’m glad they revived the old band.
going to be great - we have tickets for Brixton
It’s no death cult. Just one member
Young people will come to take our places.
While The Cult is a fantastic band, there is a darkness here, the rage and insolence of youth. Still relevant and empowering
I can't agree more!!
reminds me of real early origins of noise rock and alternative rock before bands like hum, tree people, swervedriver etc..
Native American!!!
Since this is not The Cult, SDC should just stand on its own.
@Me LikeYou little bit of B52's, little bit of "October" era U2.
Brilliant. Still remember the evening I watched this. Thanks for sharing such good quality footage
roy ferris Greetings, Roy. I'm a Ferris from the states!
I remember too and my friend's rich parents got a betamax so we videoed it and watched it over and over until we knew every move, every note lol
Bloody hell, I used to love Fatman, drove my mum and dad mad playing it over and over again.
I did the same to my folks with "Gods zoo". Then my mom saw the firewoman video some time after, and wanted to know "who that sexy man was." 😂
I love the intensity of Ian's performance.
A fantastic band, the tube gave us the best bands of the time ❤
Lucky enough to see SDC a few times back in the 80s
very powerful band been a fan for years and will keep playing them till im dead
Heard via a friends older brother around age 13 in 1985. Doubt I have gone a 3 months since then without reaching for Ian.
I was a student in Bradford and saw a poster for a gig in a pub we used to drink in (The Metropole). It was SDC, New Model Army and Joolz. I have seen many gigs since including of those bands but that unexpected one remains the best.
Começou como Southern Death Cult, aí mudou para Death Cult e se firmou como The Cult. Fizeram ótimas musicas, em qualquer época.
bradford in the80s was where it was at southern death cult, new model army, anti system, morbid humour.great bands from a great town????????????????
someone finally uploaded a great quality version of this - thankyou :)
to go from that to the Cult electric 4 years later!!

It really worked now you got BLM fiery but mostly peaceful riots.
✊️
Sick bass line
Trying to use this to figure out fatman on guitar, love David buzz

This was why I used to love The Tube
They were always way ahead of their time. Fantastic.
They were only around for 2 years. This band didn't become The Cult.
@@Danimal77 Thank you!!
"Ian's the best!"
Quite a few Ians rocking the era
brilliant as southern death cult can be ;))

oh man, I am so happy this was recorded!!!!
Saw them back in the day. Faith is a great track. The band went on to be getting the fear who I saw a few times. Strange that both only ever released one single
Never seen Ian Astbury with a guitar before.
Try the live version of Ressurection Joe too.
He actually played some guitar on the album The Cult in 1994. Maybe others as well, not sure though.
He only played it on certain songs live, kinda like Siouxsie bringing out her teardrop for Sin in my Heart lol so awesome
Just a month before the band split...
I have been a big call fan so I'm a few times never heard of this or saw this before thank you thank you thank you what a hidden gem for me it's like it's new all over again
Loved them in these days, before they sold out and became a heavy metal band
other way round for me ..this is tuneless rubbish..but the cult did some really great tracks.
Ian left these guys and got with Billy Duffy.... completely different band
Greetings from Philippines, "Vive Le SDC"... :-)
The guy on the right with dark hair ❤ Ian has always had the same dance moves with his feet!!
i remember seen them in Bordeaux france in 1983..and the other day U2..al my youth...
I listened to the band that the 3 musicians formed after Ian became the Death Cult with Billy Duff. It was interesting.
Simple awesome rock& roll with a little desperation. Way cool.
Me encanta esta etapa de Ian !
I hear some of that that guitar in the Sisters Alice...
Fab post, how good are Aki's drumming and Barry's bass playing / sound
Barry was my first bass hero!
They go back stage where Paula Yates was waiting with legs akimbo 😅
Ugh, those early days were amazing. I wonder if Ian ever watches this footage, he's got plenty to be proud of from them til now.
Reminds me of my childhood. Lying on the bed for hours listening to music from my stereo
Haha, same here..with finger poised on the cassette record button
Me too, False Faces, Apache, Vivasection, The Crypt, Moya, Fatman. Drinking black coffee with sugar at 15.
Markus Antonio I haven’t heard of those bands. I used to listen to “The Cramps”!
@@kimsung2384 These are tracks from SDC 😂
Orla I’m not such a big fan then! Obviously don’t know WTF I’m talking about 😂
great upload - remember this well
Indeed very good. At that time, I was heavily into listening to Japan.
compared to Ian nowadays... awesome stuff this is!
Hadn't found their voice yet but clearly there was something here.
I still have this on cassette
I found early Cult and went back through Death Cult to SDC... Thank fook I went back the way cos it got better rather than turning into rock dirge.
If only music was this Edgy now

Bass line on Fatman..... f**kinh hell
I watched this and was blown away
The guitar riff sounds like Sister's of Mercy
Definitely heard Alice in there.
So awesome, so Bauhaus
If you watch and listen to this music.... can you imaging songs like soul asylum...?
Ian@5:50!
Random at the end with the shave foam attack!
I believe it was somebodies birthday!
I think I saw Southern Death Cult (or Death Cult) before they ever blossomed into the Cult, around 82/83 in a small bar in Santa Monica...
No you didn’t, they never came to L.A. until The Cult played at The Music Machine on Pico in West L.A. in 1984. (I was there.)
@@RiotNrrrdUTube Maybe this was the show I was at, can you tell me about Ian's Hair for this show? I remember that distinctly..

@@TravisBickle1963 Didn't know. Is that why they disappeared? The Cult turned pretty horrible IMO anyway.
I saw the Cult in Bristol a few weeks back and Ian Astbury had a full on American accent then. Billy Duffy was AWESOME!!
