    THE DEUCE IS BACK! I go over the different fuels you can use in a M35A2 Deuce and a half with it's Multi Fuel engine. I also touch on methods to filter used motor oil and used vegetable oil fuels. Please keep in mind that any time you don't use official diesel you are running a risk of engine damage so attempt at your own risk. If you enjoyed this video please give me a like and be sure to subscribe for future channel updates as I plan to put up a new video every week or two. I’m B.C. and welcome to my channel Deuce and Guns!

    Was on a security detail one day in Nam guarding the recovery of mine damaged deuces. Mechanics only recovered the engines, saying the Cummins was the best. On my second Cummins, no problems. Truck doesn't last as long as the engine. Was driving a duce one day in Nam and the Jack shaft broke and came up into the floor board, scaring the shit outta me, thought it was a mine. A friend had just lost his leg to a mine while riding shotgun. Was all alone and I thought I didn't need my m-16 so I had left it in my tent. Was there until dark when an Arvin patrol came by and guarded me till my unit showed up. Arvin was looking for some V C who were in the area. Came close to capture which stressed me out later. V C were not nice folks. Never went anywhere again without my precious. This video brought back memories buried 53 yrs. Nice job.

      If no diesel, you had to mix oil with gasoline, or PD2. AVGAS was not compatible with the fuel density compensator.

    I was in the US Army from 1962 until 1965 and occasionally drove an M292 expandible radio van up Irshenberg hill on the German Autobahn. The gasoline engines would be crawling at below 10 mph after ascending the 11 per cent grade for 2 plus miles. The multi fuels would blow by them at over50 mph in high gear. They would run on after shave lotion, peanut oil or anything else that would ignite. I loved your video.

    I used to work for Air Force as a civilian contractor for a few years. Back then I had a Merc W124 estate, straight six diesel, 4WD.
    The engine and it's injectors simply loved the JP-8 I got from the airfields I visited. The fuel was totally water-free.
    My long roof Merc had a 100 liter tank which lasted for 1300 kilometers of all sorts of driving with JP-8. With a civilian pump diesel, well maybe 1200 kilometers of the same.

    A friend had a deuce and a half, and he claimed to get 12 MPG, regardless of what he was doing - town or highway, empty or carrying a ridiculous load. He's a chimney sweep. He'd park the deuce at the base of an old masonry chimney and basically knock it over into the back of the truck and haul it away. I'd love to have one for a farm truck. A hydraulic lift gate or a crane would make it even more useful. It'd also be pretty cool to build a box on the back that could convert it into the SHTF RV From Hell, and be able to remove the RV unit to still use it as a big damn truck.

    I have owned, worked on and driven diesels all my life, love & prefer them. Call it an obsession! I have a tired old 82' 300SD that was a beater when I got it so I did some alternate fuels testing on it. Mostly used automotive oils as I used to be a BMW tech till I switched to aviation. Anyhow, I was able to get a lot of free fuel, we had to pay to dispose of our waste oil. The car ran great on a mix of motor oil and #2 diesel. It also liked ATF and beings its a bit thinner, its a good match. It ran a bit smoother and power stayed the same and even ran a little quieter. 50/50 mix was all the higher mix concentration it liked. Beyond that would cause an intermittent misfire or shudder, likely incomplete combustion. Also used any old kerosene type fuels and Jet-A that I could get my hands on. Used a little bit of gas during the winter a couple times. Never did use anything like differential oils or manual trans oils. They are heavily contaminated with metal particles and in small quantities and stink to high heaven, not worth it. They are high in sulphur as are most high pressure lubes. Good quality to like about diesels, in a SHTF situation, an old mechanical pumped diesel only needs a battery to start up and nothing else electric (you can rig a shut-off solenoid on) and they can burn almost anything. A friend of mine that was in the military said on one of his deployments to the middle east, they couldn't get resupplied with diesel for some reason but were given JP-8 and after a while started killing diesel engines left and right. I said you should have added a bit of motor oil to the fuel as JP-8 doesn't have enough lubricity and thats exactly what they were informed to start doing. Good Vid!
    BTW, Just curious, did you end up getting rid of your Savage 64?

    • @dw7094
      @dw7094 Месяц назад

      JP5 & JP8 run great. JET-A is the fuel that lacks lubricity. The military now uses an F type fuel for jet and diesel fuels. It is JP8 with an additive. As jet fuel has a shelf life, fuel that no longer passes a SG Test is distributed to ground equipment fuel points.

    A simple but very strong neodymium magnet taped to the outside of your container to the bottom would go far with your used motor oil filter. It will draw any small to microscopic magnetic particles to it and prevent them from going into your engine . Even if it doesn't look like it's working at first, it still is working . Eventually you'll see the particles building up.

    Nice video....those critters like to chew on the plastic fuel lines on the deuce. Your truck fired up and sounded great. I always think the key to cold starts with the deuce is good batteries, a good clean ground at the battery box, and a solid fuel system. That is no leaks and a fuel pump that works. Just watch that Exhaust stake it will shot out a black mess.

    On the same topic, but from a different mechanical world. Many years ago on my family's dairy farm, before my time, the diesel fuel they got was prone to gelling in the southeast Ohio winters. What my Paw Paw would do is mix 1-2 quarts of gasoline into 5 gallons of diesel fuel. That kept the fuel liquid, and with as much sulfur as was in the fuel back then, it was still slick enough to keep injection pumps happy. Now, they did burn more of it, the exhaust smelled funny, and the engines took on a different sound, but all survived just fine. The tractors that ran on this mixture were two JD 4010's, a 720D, a 2630, and two Oliver 88 Diesels. The other tractors, I can't speak for, but the 720D is still in our possession, and still sees regular use even in 2019. We haven't added gasoline to the fuel in all my 27 years, and the unit pumps and injectors are finally getting worn to the point where they need gone through. I kinda blame that on the lack of sulfur in today's fuel, compounded with age. As far as we know, this is the first time since they bought the tractor used in 1980 that the pumps and injectors have needed work.

    Best way to filter oil is to get 4 in pvc pipe about 5 foot long. Get two roll of toilet paper remove the center card board. Stuff the rolls about half down your pipe. Poor the oil in and let it filter tough the T.P.. it will come out super clean.

    A filtering suggestion is hit Napa and order a remote filter mount. Get the one with incoming and out going ports. Connect a line from a hand or electric pump to intake side and put a longer one on discharge side, (to reach your fuel tank). Just use a base big enough for a large oil filter and you can filter and fill all in one go. No more waiting for gravity

    suggestion for filtration. aquire a 45 gallon drum (or smaller but prefferably with a standard bung),get a manually operated rotary pump from princess auto (harbor freight in the US), go to a scrap yard find a oil filter mountaing base (the piece it screws into), plumb it inline on the output side of the rotary pump add filter and start cranking.

    You have the right idea on Oil filtration. I have a simple suggestion. Let gravity do your work.
    I get used oil in 5qt containers. I then let them sit. The heavy solids sink to the bottom. When I drain off the oil I leave the last 1/2 qt in the container. I have a M-1009 (6.2l diesel) no problems. It does have a 30 gallon tank. NO PROBLEMS.

    Finally, someone that actually knows a little on diesels, & sulfur issues.
    The one thing I will say is that for a 50 gallon tank, put like 1-2 gallons of oil on the diesel. It’s up to you but it runs way smoother. I put some in my 7.3.
    The 7.3 is a beast, but I’d like to get a deuce & 1/2 some day off the lot.

    Just a thought. A 55 gallon drum, some type of pump, a oil filter. Put the oil in the drum and let the worst settle to the bottom, pump it in fuel tank through oil filter. They make fuel filters that could be used also. Places that do oil changes get the oil in 55 gallon drums. I got one give to me but you may need to pay $5 or $10 for one! If you have a place that you go to for oil changes and thing they may just give you one. Another thing try to find an old gas pump! There are not many of them around. They run on 120 or 220, so you will need a generator to run that but they will move a lot of fuel fast. Another thing is a transfer tank and pump you can dump old oil in as you get it then see how much other you need to thin it out before pumping in truck. Is there a place that changes oil, they need to do something with it someone must come around and pump it into a truck and take it away! Talk to them see if they are paid for it or if they must pay for someone to pump it out and take it away. Small town small service station may need to pay for someone to take it because it isn't worth much and cost of truck and labor to go get it, pump it from under ground tank cost. Just some thoughts! If you like them good if you don't just flush them! This is just what I came up with in short time! I have other things to but don't want to put them out for everyone to see! A way to get hundreds of gallons of of what ever fuel you need. Short time after thing get bad, good to have some 250 gallon tanks to put it in until you mix or use it!

    You also needed to mention that if the injector pump has been rebuily more than likely the fuel density compensator has been bypassed. This makes it a straight diesel engine, I don't know if you can run anything else from experience but I was told not to run anything but straight diesel. Now I do use additives for summer the bio stuff that inhibits alge growth and the stuff that stops it from gelling up in the winter.

    Used motor oil no matter how carefull you filter it introduces microscopic metal particles which will cause extra wear to your injectors as well as your cylinder walls and pistons. Also it can not be stressed enough to make sure you keep water out of your fuel. This is important in hot humid climates especially because there is a type of algae that will grow in diesel fuel which plugs your filters. For fuel we used to use JP5. if none was avaliable in some of the remote deployment sites we also used JP4, we would mix 55 gallons of new motor oil to 500 gallons of JP4.

      if you get an air powered pump I bet you could figure a way to pump out of a waste oil tank from a truck service shop, or even a car shop. The one I used to work at had to pay someone to come and pump it off to dispose of it, I'm sure there are shops within 100 miles of you that would let you pump out of their waste, as long as you cleaned up after and/or didn't make a mess, they might even have some spare 55gal drums you could use. Also, at least with the one I worked at, the motor oil and diesel fuel went into the same tank, fuel from changing filters got dumped into them, but was maybe a gallon of fuel to ten gallons of oil that was drained out of the oil pan, but still partially diluted already.

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  8 лет назад

      I looked into this but there is a local company that actually pays them to take the used oil (yes even fryer oil). They recycle it into something but I have no other info beyond that. With all the filtering and work involved I'm not going to pay anyone for used oil so it'll be limited to whatever I can scrounge from friends and family who change their own oil.

      that is quite unfortunate, I'm pretty sure a few places around here would let me pump used oil, I know of at least the truck shop I used to work in would, I'm in pretty good graces with them haha. your videos have enlightened me to the wonders of the multifuel and got me looking into one, now if only I can sell the VW bus project I got and now have no motivation to finish, I could pick myself up a decent bobbed deuce with a multifuel and hopefully make a somewhat trailworthy but mostly mobile campsite vehicle haha.

      That's how I filter it. I still get used oil from a few places that I used to work for. I also have a few farmers and friends that save their oil for me. I have a waste oil furnace in my garage too. Storing 11 drums of used motor oil takes up alot of space.

    Marine fuel oil has nothing to do with used motor oil from cars. Bunker fuel, which you *cannot* use in your multifuel engine, is the tar-like stuff left after the gasoline/kerosene/diesel are boiled out of crude oil in the fractional distillation process. Marine fuel oil is essentially the same as off-road diesel (it's even dyed red). The same CAT diesel engines that such down off-road diesel on land are fed marine fuel oil when they're installed in ships, and they run for thousands of hours between overhauls. Sulfur limits are the only thing I'm aware of that are likely to vary at all.
    Jet fuel is closer to kerosene and provides less lubrication, especially to the fuel injectors, so expect a little more wear or consider adding a splash of oil like Mazda owners with dorito-engines (Wankels) do to lubricate their apex seals. The Army runs all their "diesel" vehicles on jet fuel, so they undoubtedly have data on this stuff, maybe it's a non-issue and just a myth. I haven't researched it that closely.
    Gasoline is an emergency fuel. Don't dump it in the tank because it's cheaper than diesel. You should only run gas to either familiarize yourself with multi-fuel operations in training, or in an actual scenario where diesel or kerosene are unavailable.

  • @Slim_Slid
    @Slim_Slid 4 года назад

    The 7.8L is different than what most diesel engines use,which would require a Rotary VE44 or inline fuel pump if you want to use different fuels.The fuel pumps,injectors,and pistons are actually what allow a multi-fuel to use gasoline but it still needs to be mixed with motor oil or diesel.70/30% for compression/combustion.
    The multi-fuel is still a compression engine.
    Not just Continental,Hercules,or White but Caterpillar also had a multi-fuel engine,it wasn't the LDT-465 or LDS-465 that the M35A2-M756A2 had but the D333C for the Caterpillar M520-M877.

    if i remember right the deuce had a 50 gal tank on it. if you used gasoline in the tank and it's straight you added 5 gallon of hd 30w oil to the gas and that is the correct mix for the multi fuel engine on the 35 and 54 series engines. if you use used eng oil oil you need to get as much of the carbon out of the oil and the less syn oil you use the better off you are.

    Motor oil is relatively clean as it is/20micron avg oil filter. So just put on a big $20cat 5micron filter & just change it every 5K, saves you a lot of $ for fuel since our politicians don’t like it when we get 20mpg, on cheap fuel we can make in our back yard.

    You actually answered alot of my ques. I've scoured the internet and couldn't find half of what you said. Thank you..
    I've been considering a deuce. Mainly for the reasons you outlined here. Running low on fuel? No problem. Pull into a resturaunt and get some if their cooking oil. I'm looking for something to convert to a camper. I'm thinking get a deuce with the long bed and drop a 10-15 foot shipping container in the back. The container would have to be highly modified. But, from what I've seen, they are. Also sturdy. Would anyone here use a deuce a daily driver?

      ***** The ones I've been looking at are multi-fuel...and you can burn regular gas in them but not for long, you have to mix it with a bit of oil.
      How old are the gas ones you are talking about?

      William Todd The original M35 from the 1950s (the non A, A1, or A2 version) had a in-line 6 gasser engine. I've never seen one in person and only met one person online who had one due to the vast majority of them being converted to a multi-fuel A2 during the late 70s and 80s.

    One that you missed and can find is Paraffin !
    Yes, Yes, it's a nasty fuel that needs cleaned up BUT I reckon in a SHTF situation it would be one of the last fuels still out there cause hardly anyone uses it, BUT Your Duce "WILL" run on it, filtered and added oil BUT, "IT WILL RUN" !
    Best Wishes from Bonnie Scotland

    Back when my dad worked for sahagan fuel in the late 80's early 90's they used to mix a few gallons of kerosene in when they filled up the oil trucks in the winter cause it would thicken up a bit.

      @Russell Gerdes yeah that's true but Its more of a comment on the viscosity and gel point of modern diesel. The trucks would run better on 10% kero in negative temperatures. Modern ultra low sulfur diesel is thinner but also lacks the lubricosity of the old stuff

    • @jebbaxley6944
      @jebbaxley6944 9 лет назад

      Mike Brown the problem with bobbing them is normally with the 3rd axle frame and bed the weight ratio is a 70/30 with 70 % being in the front drop the weight of the extra axle bed and frame and now you are closer to 90/10 with all the weight on the front no traction and have heard stories of the rear tires lifting an inch or 2 off the ground with heavy braking completely looses its off road capability

    Not sure what the micron rate is on a regular oil filter. But why not a remote oil filter and ph8 fram filter. That filter is available everywhere & cheep. You could set it up as a gravity feed or with a pump and do it fast.

    Good video! But I have developed a better filter system. I took a 300 gallon tote hooked a good water hose to the bottom to a old 30 gallon Electric water heater where it says in. Then I came up with a double quart and half filter off a old locomotive engine. Or ( a X ternal system off a diesel truck) I use a electric fuel pump for a diesel truck. To go back to the tote. I like to strain about 100 gallons at a time. So your circulating the same oil in and out of the tote for about 24 hours. I run this at 50/50 diesel in my 1992 Dodge 5.9 and a bobed deuce that I have. My fuel then goes down to about $2. A gallon. 👍

    Do you only mix a quart of oil if your filling up from empty or. Regular diesel or do you add more then a quart? Any specific ratio of diesel to oil just to be sure it gets the lubrication it needs or is one quart fine for any fill up? Also what kind of oil do you use with the straight diesel to help it? it a sae30 or just a 10-40 oil?. I appreciate your time and these great videos
