This overdrive pedal sounds fresh, direct, well defined and has this bite that is necessary in a band situation. It is also very versatile and I like the bass cut knop that is perfect to adjust the tones you like. It's a really interesting overdrive pedal. Great video as always!
I agree with all of that Roberto... this is one great sounding and versatile pedal! And I love the bite on the Tele - I actually can't wait to use it at gig volume. Although I need a band for that 😉 But I think Nobels did an amazing job with it, and I'm already wondering how they top it for the 40th edition 😅 Cheers as ever and rock on!
A suggestion to save a little bit of talking time (get to the demo quicker!), instead of describing your setup in excruciating detail, just add it in as notes on the screen during the demo.
Timestamps are your friend! Thanks for the feedback, though. I actually went through a period of not doing that and people started asking about my setup. So, rather than doing what you suggest - it's not easy to read such notes and watch a video at the same time - or put them in the description (because no one reads RUclips descriptions!) I started adding in timestamps to every section so you can click on the parts of the video you want.
You said something like it doesn't work well with single coils when turned up more than to 12 o'clock, if I remember correctly - I didn't find that passage again after the first watch of the video. What seems to be the problem at higher gain stages, if I may ask? I own a strat and I considered buying the ODR-1.
Good question. It's not a problem per se, it's more just that I noticed that the pedal's main strengths (at least for the kinds of music I play) are elsewhere with my Tele. With my LP's humbuckers at higher gain settings it's incredible too, I guess because of the higher output and thicker tones. But I also have to say there are loads of videos of Tele players making the ODR-1s sound awesome at higher gain settings too... so I don't think you've anything to worry about! Give it a try and I hope it works for you and your Strat 👍
Used more as a low gain Drive/Clean boost it is impressive. The standard models are intolerably muddy. THANX as usual for leading the cutting edge. If its new it is here first always month's before other sites. So guys subscribe or you will be out of the loop and be buying things that are as cool as last years newspapers.
Cheers Paul! I remember you weren't a huge fan of the other ODR-1s you tried but I'm sure you could make this one work more for you thanks to the excellent Bass Cut Control. I'm actually amazed no one else has done a video of this one yet!
No real difference between the 2 big 1s. The Bass roll off pulls more out than the bass cut switch on the standard. The mini seems to have more gain in it than its bigger counterparts!
Yeah, they're clearly brothers from the same mother. Or whatever you say! The Mini has more low end and gain (and volume, I think) than the others, which makes it very useful in certain contexts... all the Nashville guys must love it for a reason!
Great review as always, great sounding pedal. As this one is going on your pedal board, when do you switch between this one and the Lightspeed? As far as the bass cut, shouldn't we actually have some EQ pedal in our chain to filter certain frequencies at all time. Your thoughts about that?
Thanks, yes, it's lovely! And it has a different flavor to the Lightspeed, so they actually compliment each other extremely well. Maybe I need to do a video about that! About EQs, yes, absolutely. EQ pedals are really underrated (including by me I guess 😅) but they can be so useful for so many things. And of course many overdrives can be made to sound almost identical with some clever EQing. But it's also something where I like to appreciate the differences... like when you play the Tele with this pedal, then the Les Paul. What a difference! Which can be a great thing, or not, depending where you're playing. I'm going to need to investigate this further. Do you have an EQ pedal specifically?
@@RichWordsMusic I haven't got one myself (yet) but I often feel I could use one, especially when playing on a lower volume. I often read these pedals add some hiss or hum to the signal, especially when they're placed in front of the drive pedals. (and that's where I would want it to double as a boost.) That might be something to look at if you buy or review them.
I had a OD-1 for a week and sent it back due to the fact it had very little treble even with the tone on 5 o'clock? Gee I must say Rich that your Tele sure is brittle, were you using a sim amp or real?
Interesting, but that's definitely something I've heard other people say about the ODR-1 too. Has never been an issue for me personally, especially when the Bass Cut is in operation. I do like a lot of top end in my sound too, I must admit... my Tele tones will (for better or worse 😉) take people's heads off! This was my usual Black Spirit 200 setup, usual settings.
You should, NL odr c++ is very similar but also has active mid eq! The really great sounds you got out of the new odr 1 made me directly start up my rc10r (😎) to revisit the NL c++ that I actually planned to sell in favor of the NL cs that I also have. The wide collection of sounds you realized here is all you really need imo. Thanks.
Thanks for your in depth review. But what do you mean you're going to buy this? Didn't they give you one? They're not even publicly available yet. And if they didn't give you this one, and just lent it to you to review, shame on them. You gave them the best commercial they could have ever hoped for, for "free." I think that's worth $169
In your demo, the mini sounded best in comparison to 30th Anniversary and Bass Cut versions (IMHO, just how I heard it through my wired apple EarPods). Awesome demo!
Interesting, but hey, the Nashville pros all LOVE the Mini too - there's definitely some magic in it! I love it also, but sometimes I do like the bass cut option the others offer when using humbuckers. Cheers and rock on!
@@RichWordsMusic I don't own a Nobels ODR-1 in any version but when I finally get one it will be the 30th Anniversary. I'm torn between that and the Keeley Noble Screamer since there's not much difference in cost. I'm a if-you-could-only-have-one kind of guy. Your reviews/work here on RUclips really help me make informed purchase decisions and it's much appreciated. Thank You! (Subbed) :)
@@rjrguitar - I'm so glad to hear you've tried the Keeley NS and really appreciate your feedback. I'm not a fan of that quality of sound you described either. I like a pedal to be able to get chewy or spongy more if anything. Again, many thanks for your reply/feedback! It saves me suffering through the process of A/B-ing them which used to be something I enjoyed many moons ago. Cheers and more power to you and your channel!
@@RichWordsMusic I definitely need a great variant, I’ve got a Klon and RAT as my main drive boxes and a genuine ODR1 was the one last core drive type pedal i’d been missing so I’m stoked for this recent development.
I've not yet had the fortune to play an old ODR-1... hopefully I will soon! I do enjoy the ODR-1 though, and this 30th Anniversary one is the best I've tried so far. (I also need to try the Nordland ODR-C sometime.)
Thanks! It's purely the DI on the amp (which is called the Red Box AE) and I'm on Cab 5 of the 8 included in the head, which is a 4x12. Yeah, I love the Black Spirit 200 and still use it almost all the time. Disclaimer: I worked for H&K for 6 years (don't any more) and still use the amps to this day. Really worth checking out if you ever get the chance! Very versatile and take pedals really well.
Don't listen to me waffling - listen to the pedal! But, I take your rather rude point and am actually looking to improve my audio (as well as all aspects of my videos) in 2024. Would love to hear some of your great sounding videos for inspiration, but of course there's nothing...
Thanks a lot! And no - I left BluGuitar at the end of last year. We've been trying to organise a couple of guest slots for me on Academy Of Tone though... hopefully that can happen soon! It's always a fun time and I do miss it.
