dude stop crossing your legs all the time, you aren't benefitting rom it in any way (apart from the constant pain in slightly squeezing your nuts, is this why you do it?)
Quick tip: for the armrests of the Embody, you can pull up the arms and then position them however you wish. We made the same mistake in our review. We love the Embody though and have them in our offices.
@TechLead 4:45 For the HM Embody, you need to lift the arms when moving them in and out for it to not be so difficult. Lifting them “unlocks” them for smooth movement. Kind of like when you have to push down on an RX bottle to open it...Same way lift the arms and move them in and out! Thank me later :)
You know, it could have been @TechLead ex-wife that had a chair on the side. Saksham do you have a chair on the side that you are feeling guilty or proud of?

I bought the hyken after this review. I really like it! You were spot on about sitting cross legged on it! The cons are that you can't get the arm rests completely out of the way, the wheels included are not good for hardwood. I bought the replacement hardwood wheels online but it raised it up an inch. I'm 5'9" and the lowest setting on the chair was right where it needed to be. There is a gas valve online that is an inch shorter but I'm not sure if I'm going to buy it or not. On the pro side when the back locks it locks straight. No flex.
This is the best office chair review on RUclips. Been editing my videos in a plastic table chair for years and my back cannot take another minute! I'm gonna buy the staples chair after watching this review 👍 thank you!
if you did, I hope you got the protection plan. As Staples will allow you to trade it in for whatever reason. Even use it to trade for a different chair.
I was looking for this comment I know most of his videos are highly comedic so I wasn’t sure if these was a real review video Kept popping up when I searched good ergonomic chair so here I am
I have embody at home and Aeron at office, and for me embody is 100% the more comfortable one. It just fits your body so well and I don't mind sitting long hours on it. However, the arm rest sucks, It is so hard to adjust and it will miss-align every once in a while and I had to unscrew it, take it off and fix it. For the autonomous chairs, I prefer Kinn Chair over the Ergo Chair.
Really is one of the better videos, most people stretch videos out for to long in reviews. I appreciate the multiple comparison in one sitting. No pun intended.
the cross leg comment was super helpful, I like to sit like that too so the herman miller would have probably been not quite right for me. Buying my first home and upgrading my office, so this was very informative. Thank you.
Great overview. Advice for University students: Get the best chair possible and spare no cost as it will lead to orthopedic issues when you are older. As someone who has many decades of higher learning, I can speak to having a decent and orthopedically correct chair, Ravi Peiris M.D.
As someone who recently finished university and who now has chronic backpain, I wish I took advise like this more seriously. Between classes and studying (not to mention recreational time watching shows/gaming), I probably spent up to 8 hours a day sitting while in school. Now I'm paying the price for that.
The Tech Lead, you absolutely nailed it in this video. I'm so glad you mentioned the inability to sit cross-legged in the Herman Miller Aeron. That's always been my criticism of the chair as well. I might actually buy the Staples chair based on your review.
I thought no one would ever take that into consideration... Enforcing good posture is one thing but enabling different positions with ease is top notch
@@icarolfmuniz the thing is, sitting cross-legged is supposed to be very bad posture. Nevermind, I thought it was the other type of cross-legged. You should only sit cross-legged like you mean in flat surfaces.
I have a Herman Miller Mirra at home, which I can sit cross-legged on quite easily. Trying to sit on the office Aeron cross-legged was quite restrictive. 12 years on, the Mirra still looks and functions without any problems - a testament to the build quality.
Had a Steelcase Gesture since 2016, even got it used and still enjoy it. However your comment about dirty is true. I have a white one and i pretty much have lost hope I'll be able to resell it ever. It also doesn't have a headrest which is why now that i need a second chair, I'm watching your video. The best thing about it though is those arm rests, i am so spoiled i am hoping some of these have the same mobility
I’ve been shopping for an office chair and there are so many options. It’s a daunting task to choose bc I want all the adjustments but not some more than $400. This review really put things into perspective. Thank you.
Office designer here-price really matters for long term life of a chair and adjustments it has. I’d say, most over $250 are the same comfort quality. The warranties on commercial furniture are usually limited lifetime, with 5-10 years on components like the pneumatic lift and casters. Every person likes totally different seat cushions-that’s really a personal preference thing.
Nice comparison. As a Hyken chair owner, I can say that it is a good chair for what it costs. To me, the standing features of the chair are the headrest and the locking mechanism for the backrest tilt. However, there is a couple of things I wish were different: first being the support and contour in the backrest are meant for slightly or fully reclined position and not well suited for sitting upright as there is a significant gap between the backrest and the curvature of my back; and second, the armrests can benefit a lot from better adjustability, they just go up and down (and they don't get low enough to my liking), adding forward and backward adjustments will hugely improve the chair ergonomics, without this I'm never comfortably close enough to my desk (which is a standing desk with plenty of height adjustability). As a consequence, I can never achieve optimal productivity sitting position with the Hyken chair. For reference, I'm 1.76 m tall and weight about 74 kg. So, the Hyken chair is good for relaxing or working if you favor reclined sitting posture, not so good if you like to sit upright with the keyboard close to elbow level. I hope this helps.
Had my Steelcase Leap V2 chair at work for about 14 years. It was around $800 when I looked it up at after getting it from our manager. I will say it basically looks the same as when I got it other than some coffee stains. The thing is super durable. I wouldn't worry about breaking that Gesture chair just because it is expensive. The materials used are really durable.
14:17 FWIW I bought my Aeron used about ten years ago. It was made in 1996 according to the sticker underneath. Repairs weren't needed until 2022 when I replaced the seat pan which had a wear patch on the mesh. That cost AUD$220 from memory. That's really good for a 26-year-old chair I think!
When I'm faced with a tight deadline, my favorite chair to use for coding is an old drum throne (chair) that I usually use when playing guitar. Not having a back rest adds a feeling of anxiousness, and it helps me get down to business faster. Sort of forces me to focus on the task at hand, because I can't get totally comfortable when sitting on it. I call it "the pressure seat".
@@magicalsurprise1509 It's difficult at first, because you're in constant learning mode. But after a few years of settling in, yes, we have plenty of free time.
You are an absolute legend, so many reviewers fail to check whether u can set cross-legged or not. You've helped me pick the Hyken for my home work setup :)
14:26 - Aeron has 10 or 12 year warranty, so if it breaks they will just fix it. I actually owned Aeron and it was exchanged three times due to quality controll issues (all of the new ones I got were skewed to one side), so the exchanging works well, just don't forget to check it for these kinds of problems.
I have had that costco chair for 5 years (sitting on it rn) and I can tell yall that thing is probably the best price to value you're gonna find on the chair market, if I ever hear it's going out of production I'm buying as much as I have room for lol.
In addition, not everyone is a millionaire. That is, even if the HM comes with a 12 year warranty and then breaks right after, it may still be cheaper in the long run compared to re-buying a $200 chair every couple years. That said, apparently HM chairs last for much longer than their warranty, so that's even more value. Then there's even the possibility of re-selling the chair because HM chairs have a large used market. So again, more value on the back-end of the overall purchase. So an excellent chair with a 12-year warranty (labor and parts) that normally far outlasts its warranty and can even be re-sold for partial value back.
Herman Miller and its authorized resellers also have semi annual sales. I got one 3 years ago at a fairly good discount. It's still flawless and no regrets at all. I've attached the Atlas headrest and it's super comfortable.
I found the embody chair to be extremely comfortable and ergonomic. I never expected a chair to be able to support my back the way it does. I am not a programmer though.
@@spacemanapeinc7202 it's been a couple of years since my comment. My opinion is that it's the same. I now have even greater appreciation for the overall quality of the chair.
Lot of ppl complain with aeron where you can't crisscross your legs but if you just buy something that you can attach thats a nice soft cushioning to surround it then maybe you can enjoy criss cross.
I know this will not work for everyone but I will share with the hope that someone will find this helpful as this worked for me. 1. Do at least 10 minutes to 15 minutes back exercise (weights or bodyweight) search youtube for examples. 2. Do back stretches regularly 3. Use a stool type chair without a backrest (some stool have a little backrest). 4. Elevate your monitor so your neck is straight. Overall this trains your back muscles to work and you won't need to buy these gimmicky expensive chairs and your body will thank you and help you in old age. I say don't invest in these items invest in your back muscles. disclaimer: I do enjoy sitting on a lazy boy chair during reading and watching stuff but most work/coding session is done on a stool chair and keeps me alert and not sleepy or else I fall 🤣
on a stool you tend to go in positions which hurt in the long term much more then any position you could have in a cheap office chair. Do regular breaks and move around (at least every hour) Change sitting positions regularly, don't just sit traight the whole day, move your body constantly, (don't go in a long neck position, if this happens regularly check the ergonomics of your workplace, you also might need glasses) Do any sport in your free time regularly (not just good for your back) Strech yourself regularly, like every morning or evening These are the tips my physiotherapeut gave me.
My experience about the expensive "meme" chairs, I found one Steelcase that someone threw away. Outside the consumables, and some squeaking, the chair was good. The chair was marked as a refurbish on the bottom, refurbished around 2004 IIRC (don't remember the exact date) model not even listed on their website anymore. I sat on the damn chair, not even adding new cushion, nor anything like that, and it was, hands down, the best chair I've ever used, period. It was easy to sit down, stay a bunch of hours on the bloody thing and get up better feeling than I was when I sat down. I mostly stopped shuffling my posture on the chair as it was mostly triggered by the discomfort that you don't even notice day to day. If you do have the chance to test try a good chair, from a reputable manufacturer, do it. It is worth finding which ergonomic chair is for you and spending that premium. The best chair is the one that you don't feel it, both after a long session, and changing your (naturally) bad posture to a good one.
I have had the staples chair for a few years now and I think that it has served its purpose pretty well. The only issues I have with it is the build quality. All the materials feel fine and there is no creaking, but there are fitment issues. I have 4 of these chairs and I see the problem in all of them. 1 has a slightly tilted seat, 2 have uneven arm rests, and the last one has a tilted beck rest. You probably wont notice it unless you are looking for it, but I fear that this may cause possible posture issues in the future. This is one of the reasons why I want to get a higher end chair because the tolerances may be better.
I'm due for a chair and found your video. I have to say this is the best I've seen so far. Thanks! Concerning hard seats get a non-slip seat cushion. That is what I use.
Key factor that's hard to grok in a quick review video: I've had my Aeron for about 20 years and I think the only "repair" has been replacing the wheels once (and some lubricant maybe twice). These are truly incredible chairs.

dude stop crossing your legs all the time, you aren't benefitting rom it in any way (apart from the constant pain in slightly squeezing your nuts, is this why you do it?)
Quick tip: for the armrests of the Embody, you can pull up the arms and then position them however you wish. We made the same mistake in our review. We love the Embody though and have them in our offices.
Thanks for the video, it's good to see that you don't only present the extremely expensive chairs, but also those that are affordable.

No flex.
I have the Herman Miller Aeron and I could sit on it for 10 hrs at a time with little pain or strain. It's amazing.
are we still talking about chairs in the end?

I have embody at home and Aeron at office, and for me embody is 100% the more comfortable one. It just fits your body so well and I don't mind sitting long hours on it. However, the arm rest sucks, It is so hard to adjust and it will miss-align every once in a while and I had to unscrew it, take it off and fix it. For the autonomous chairs, I prefer Kinn Chair over the Ergo Chair.

The Tech Lead, you absolutely nailed it in this video. I'm so glad you mentioned the inability to sit cross-legged in the Herman Miller Aeron. That's always been my criticism of the chair as well. I might actually buy the Staples chair based on your review.
In fact, I'm sitting cross-legged now on the Hyken.

Very good approach to review the chairs! Thanks for your point of view!

Subbed lmao

I had one of those and absolutely hated it. If you can't adjust the angle of the seat, the chair is garbage.
Wow lots of great points. Thanks!
FINALLY a real review of all of these chairs.

I have had that costco chair for 5 years (sitting on it rn) and I can tell yall that thing is probably the best price to value you're gonna find on the chair market, if I ever hear it's going out of production I'm buying as much as I have room for lol.
don't forget the Herman Miller comes with a 12 year warranty so don't have to worry about that $100 repair
Staple Hyken comes with a 7 year warranty so for $200; your money is well spent.

14:28 'let me come down to your level again', you can't, you are a millionaire!
I know this will not work for everyone but I will share with the hope that someone will find this helpful as this worked for me.
1. Do at least 10 minutes to 15 minutes back exercise (weights or bodyweight) search youtube for examples.
2. Do back stretches regularly
3. Use a stool type chair without a backrest (some stool have a little backrest).
4. Elevate your monitor so your neck is straight.
Overall this trains your back muscles to work and you won't need to buy these gimmicky expensive chairs and your body will thank you and help you in old age. I say don't invest in these items invest in your back muscles.
disclaimer: I do enjoy sitting on a lazy boy chair during reading and watching stuff but most work/coding session is done on a stool chair and keeps me alert and not sleepy or else I fall 🤣
as long as you don't slotch on the stool maybe it will help enforce good habits
Expensive chairs arent a gimmick....they are there for a reason when you sit long hours and work.
on a stool you tend to go in positions which hurt in the long term much more then any position you could have in a cheap office chair.
Do regular breaks and move around (at least every hour)
Change sitting positions regularly, don't just sit traight the whole day, move your body constantly, (don't go in a long neck position, if this happens regularly check the ergonomics of your workplace, you also might need glasses)
Do any sport in your free time regularly (not just good for your back)
Strech yourself regularly, like every morning or evening
These are the tips my physiotherapeut gave me.
Nice review, hits the point, it's funny when you slide, I was expecting to see you slide out of the frame :)
"Something you can ride on the weekends or so" 🤣🤣👍🏼👍🏼 pretty good analogy!
