p.p.s. I'm a 6ft dude, but keys in my knuckles heading home from the pub by myself back when I was 17 (I'm in Scotland- that's normal here) came in real handy one time. Apparently the story is true, that you only have to take down the biggest guy in the assailing group to make enough space to vacate to safety. I'm pretty sure that a$$hat needed stitches.

And like others here, the keys in the knuckles line hits hard because many of us did that and know very well the anxiety their inadequacy as a self-defense measure can provide... But desperate times eh? I been there and I'm a 6'1" man. Didn't help at all... Shit got the everlovin' sht kicked out of me... But I learned a valuable lesson of never walking in that district ever again... Anyway. Bygones. All the best and thanks for the snazzy jacket. I hope Chinny herself got a kick out of it!
Yeah I wouldn’t put much stock in keys in the knuckles…..it’s more likely to hurt your hand than the other person.
I learned long ago when living in east LA….that it’s best to befriend the dangerous ppl. Then they protect you. :)

Yes, I never know if I'm going to do the right thing with the keys (like, or my fists) if it ever came down to it, but I absolutely have gripped my keys in my knuckles. On countless occasions.
Great reaction video/additional breakdown. Halfway or so through her interview on Chris Liepe's channel she talks about her voice training (7 years with the same teacher at one point). It's so familiar to me as a pianist, except... somehow when I think of intensive practice and study done with your own voice, it feels more awe-inspiring than those of us who go through the same thing with instruments (I'm not down-playing instrumental musicians! We're fucking amazing! But... your *voice*... that's... idk. Different).
And yes, your plum faux fur jacket was perfect.

Great Yo Yo reaction. I had never heard about people putting their keys in their fist until I heard this song. I am from Western Australia, I don't think it's a common practise here but I could just be out of the loop. I have heard of women putting pepper spray in their handbag. I would advise my daughters when they were walking alone to talk to someone on their mobile hoping this would keep them safer.

Double YO! haha! I have indeed put my keys in my fist while walking alone. It made my heart happy to hear you mention the spotlight! I'm a follow spot person for our opera house and other venues and I'm the house elctrician at a roadhouse theater. None of our follow spots are automated...not even when we get WWE in. There are always humans physically operating them. Stagehands and techs are always behind the scenes. We know we're doing a good job when no one notices that we're there. I agree- the use of the spotlight and her shadow added so much dimension to the shots! Of course her immense talent and passion are the primary focus. She has an insanely beautiful voice and presence! I prefer this version to the official video for it. I mean that video is epic! But she has so much more soul in this version! And the fact that she makes her own hats and creates her outfits! Holy crap! I wish she could work in our wardrobe department at our opera house!
Ahh man, follow spots used to be in all the A rooms….it’s so awesome to walk across the stage and always be lit up!! Keep lighting up that show!!

Yo yo Mike...loved your reaction. Really liked that you reacted to both versions, because like you said, it gave even more to the experience and lyricism of watching this one after. As for the keys, I'm sure it's a shared experience for most folks, but when she says, "like I have to" , it does make me think back to being a girl, and how this was something unspoken, but very necessarily understood that you did no matter where you were, especially if it was after a certain hour.
Yooooo. Makes sense…..I had to do it in my 20s because I had different hair and it made me a target while touring through small towns where I really stood out…..maybe I formed a habit because I always do that when walking at night by myself.
@@michaelgoyettemusicshe did a lovely interview recently with Chris Liepe when she explained that part with the keys was totally improvised but just felt right, and yes was referring to women being taught to do that all our lives. It was a great interview.

Yo Yo. I don't often leave comments on reactions that I'm so late in getting to. But your question about keys reminded me of a conversation I had with a male colleague, a PhD in clinical psychology, when I told him about this song. I ass/u/med that my favorite line from this song, the one about holding your keys in your knuckles, was universally understood. Much to my surprise, this man who's spent a few decades providing therapy to abused women, had never heard of this, and had no idea what it meant. I was glad to hear you ask the question. I've certainly carried my keys in my knuckles hundreds of times, maybe thousands.
Yo that’s interesting…..thanks for adding that…… I’ve done it in the past but I was always worried I’d break my fingers or something so I wouldn’t likely hit someone full force for that reason….but you could deliver some damage if placed right…..which I hope ppl realize…..you need a plan…..you gotta know vulnerable areas because you’d likely only get the one chance….I’m quite fast…..I can outrun most ppl…. Did you notice she starts out facing her shadow self and then turns around! I think she is acknowledging the shadow of her former self who was tormented by a former lover or perhaps the industry! Always have my keys in my knuckles at night. Always have them available, if not positioned, early morning and evening. I got slack for awhile, then last year, safe neighborhood, busy coffee shop I was at - a woman was attacked about 30 minutes after sunrise, as she parked and walked across the parking lot. Keys back on knuckles and ready. Stupid, but beats getting victimized.
