There is one very important contribution of kalabhra period or kalapirar in tamil that makes many to deny the period to be dark ages. The aiperumkapiyangal or the 5 great epics that include silapathikaram was written during this period

The KalaBhras were of Kannada in origin
After defeating the kaLabharas, all kaLabhra's records were destroyed
That is why there are relatively less or negligible administrative records during that period.

Kalabhras were most likely Jains and likely patronized Jain monks instead of Brahmins. Jainism was dominant in this period of Tamil history. Not sure if it was a dark period for Tamil since a lot of literature including Silapathikaram was composed in this period. Hathigumpa inscription only mentions chera, chola pandiya and athiyaman kings to be away from kharavela's rule and friendly.

My late grandmother use to recall a schism between the Brahmanas of Madurai in the late nineteenth century - one group was called the 'kadaambi' kootam (group) and the other, the 'kalabra" (no extended a in the second syllable) kootam. I've always wondered if this had anything at all to do with the kalaabra of thirteen centuries past. I'll leave out which group she was from 🙂

Kalabhras were tamils according to historian Padmavati. She argues Buddhism emerged in TN in 3rd century beginning. The vihars helped people during their distress. So people took to Buddha. The minor velir kings who supplied soldiers money food to the three kings stopped it and formed their own army called kalabhra or Kalappirar or mixed people of Tamil and defeated the three kings to take tamizhagam for themselves and rule.
