Aaron was a great build to watch and gives some really good ideas. Definitely going to give it a try. Did you find the boards were possibly a little wide and dig into your rear delts when pressing? That was my only concern bro
I made this with collapsible legs as well. The problem I'm having is figuring out how to brace the legs to ensure they don't try and kick out on me while I'm using the bench. You mentioned using a tension rod as a permanent solution. Can you do a quick video on how you did this. Thanks
I'm happy to see this.3 years a go my ex make me a wooden bench but a flat one with a 2x6 on the side so I can rest the bar weight .I being thinking on how to make one like that.thanks for you're video 👍
@@aaronfixesstuff you sound like me - I usually leave something undone in a project - I still need to attach one more corner molding piece for my sauna build 16 yrs ago:)

I don’t think it can be done using the same bench. It can probably be made on a separate bench however. Maybe I’ll make one, I’ll consider it. Thanks for watching:)
How is the MDF holding up? Once it gets wet from sweat it will swell and flake. Did you paint it? It’s also much heavier than ply. I’m building one to be portable as well as collapsible so will go with lighter pine ply and put a fins h sealer on it. I understand it’s more expensive. I may go with a through mortise and tenon joint to fix the legs to base, then secure with 3/8” carriage bolt and wing nut for tooled removal (instead of collapsing). No tension rod or other stabilizer necessary. Lastly, I understand how you came up with 13” length on the cross legs - it’s what was left over. Is it enough? Is it stable. Most benches would be 24” ish
Thanks for sharing. Since you use Tee Hinge on the leg to make it fold-able. I saw a beam at the bottom of leg to make it stable. How do you make the beam flexible when you want to fold the leg? Thanks
Hello Aaron, I tried to open the links for the detailed list of materials but it didn' t work. I've got all the pieces of wood needed but I would like to know list of washers, bolts and knots if it's possible. Thanks a lot, very appreciated and congrats for this amazing video and creation ! Cheers from Canada !
Also, when you put the bolt in the 1x2 swing arm, inside the swing arm, there are still rod coming out of the 1x2 beam, which will not make the plywood board flat. However, you video at the end the board was flat. Can you please tell me what you did that was not showing in the video?
Lumberjacklurch I see what you mean. Notice that later in the video I added the notches. When the bench lies flat, the tips of those bolts will be in the notch. Does that make sense?
At what distance from the ends of the 4x4 back did you position the legs? You hinged the legs but exactly where? Where are the measurements you mentioned? In UK links to Homedepot don’t open.
Hey dude, you're a helpful person, and your intro was great so i could not resist to subscribe to your channel. I hope you make videos using manual tools.
Can u plz tell me that how much weight can this bench hold....in flat position and also its capacity in incline position????.....plz reply sir...by the way....great project...i also want to make one of my own...
Thanks for watching! As far as the weight, I can’t tell you with certainty because I’m not an engineer. What I can tell you is that what I do is I prop up a 2x4 between the frame and backrest to add structural support. I hope this helps.
Jaysen Zapata I would say it’s about the same height. I’m 5’9 and when I use it, my feet are planted on the ground. As far as high loads, I didn’t make any really heavy weights to test it on. I’d say that the weakest part is the swing arms, and I put a piece of 2x4 in between the frame and backrest for added support.
Marcus Kliewer that’s a good question. I checked Home Depot and it doesn’t say. What I did on the prototype (which only had a 1/4 bolt), was to add a piece of 2x4 to help support the weight. You can also use a thicker bolt and just drill a bigger hole.
Built the same one two months ago minus the 1x2 pivot mechanism. I just stick a piece of extra 4x4 between the upper seat and the main 4x4 beam. No way would I trust using any kind of heavy weight with 1x2's those things will snap and the weight will come down on top of me.
Ahmad Moussaoui that’s definitely good feedback for people who will be lifting heavy on there. I don’t do super heavy weights, so I don’t have that problem.
Jose Luis I disagree with that. I’ve had it for several months now. But if you are doing heavy weights, you can erect a 2x4 while using it for additional support.
Was the height of the notches for the bench incline too high for you to notch out with your miter saw? I ask because I feel like doing the notches before you assemble it seems easier, no?
Hamaza Azam you’re right, it would be easier. The problem was that I didn’t know where the notches would go because I was not working off of a guide. I figured it out as I went.
Interesting concept but I believe using 2x12, while more work, is a better choice of wood. First a 2x12 has to be cut from much older trees. Therefore it is more stable than a 2x4 or even a 4x4 that are cut from younger trees. Second, after cutting a part to length, you will rip it into several boards. Therefore, you get much better use out of the linear board length. Third, laminating the 1.5x3.5 inch cut boards not increases the strength by alternating growth patterns, the same reason manufactured wood is more stable. But it also allows you to use tenons and mortise construction by simply cutting the pieces to proper length to assemble in an overlapping fashion.
