My first system was an NES, which an older sibling purchased. My parents called it a Nintendo. Then they continued w/ Super Nintendo and N64, which came out when I was about 13. Those weird experiences were never replicated by other systems

Rogue Squadron also had one of the best easter eggs ever. They completely hid the Naboo Starfighter as a cheat code fighter, and dropped the code to unlock it as part of the movie promo.
I remember that, long after completely finishing the game they revealed codes for hidden ships and that gave the game some new life. Reminds me also of the Goldeneye input cheat codes that were kept secret for several years, for such intensely played games, both of those were great surprises.
Ogre Battle was a tasty choice for this list! And thank you for showing Unicorn Overlord. I somehow completely missed the memo on that game so I had to check it out and buy it thanks to this video. You have great taste, my dude! I think Mischief Makers would be a good candidate for this category as well. I love the aesthetic and sound design of that game.
One of the keys to enjoying an N64 game is to use a controller which has a control stick that's in good condition, and many games work best with the original type of controller control stick, which is actually significantly more precise than modern control sticks, believe it or not. Part of the issue is that more modern style control sticks will often just feel too sensitive as well, where you don't have enough control to make fine adjustments in some games. You can buy replacement parts for your original OEM controllers. It can take a bit of work to get them installed, and you might need to sand away some mold lines, but once you get it working well it can be a huge improvement.
The difference between playing Ocarina's shooting gallery games on OG hardware vs emulation illustrates this very well. It's so much better on the N64 controller.
I find the reason for this personally fascinating! The N64 stick technically output values in a range of -128 to 128 same as modern sticks, but the hexagonal gate limited the actual range to about 81 in either direction, which developers were aware of and programmed around. Thus the expected max range comes at about 60%. Most modern emulators will automatically correct for this, or allow you to adjust the correction ratio. The NSO N64 controller actually outputs in the correct range, which is why it feels so good in its intended use case.
F-Zero X is honestly one of the BEST N64 games I've played. Been replaying the 64 alot recently and yes, F-Zero X IMO has probably aged the best out of any game I've played on there, Performance is stellar, Graphics are solid, Soundtrack is banging, And the gravity defying race tracks are still amazing to this day. Awesome game, One of if not the best racing game on 64.

They could have just cranked out a simple 2D zelda game just like a link to the past but they went above and beyond to make sure it took advantage of the 64's hardware
The first time my friend played the Ocarina of Time fishing minigame he was so into it he tried to set the hook when his first fish bit and yanked the controller out of the port. It was definitely one of the first games we had played with a rumble pak (controller feedback was still a very new thing). We are both die hard fishermen since we were kids and no I'm not making this up. I was there and its still one of the best things I've ever seen! PS This was in maybe 1998 so we were 18 by then 😂

Yeah, the claim that it was the N64 and *not* the NES, Game Boy, or SNES that practically made "Nintendo" synonymous with "home video games" is farfetched at best. XD
For me Conker would the best aged game, and is still considered the definitive version of the game, despite having a graphically enhanced, but censored Remake in the Xbox. Rare somewhat managed to use high resolution textures, face and mouth animations, sily voice acting that fit the tone of the gane (One of the few games with good VA, alongside MGS, and the REs) , all in those cartridges with few storage, and tho this day, There hasn't been another game like that, and I don't think there will be.
Fzero X was and still is one of the fastest and most responsive (maybe too responsive sometimes) racers out there. Emulation is even better as it cuts the lag and does not drop frames. Highly reccommend another visit on modern tech!
I hate to say it but most of these games suffer from not being played on a CRT. Most of my classic systems look fine on a newer flat screen TV, but the 64 really suffers when played on a modern TV. I just got a Sony CRT and it's an amazing improvement. It just sucks that CRTs are so heavy, but they are easy to find and in most cases free.
I remember years ago, back around the time the Xbox 360 came out, I plugged my n64 into a modern, at the time, flat screen TV to try and play some goldeneye. It really looked bad to the point where we ended up not playing it.
@@fritzthecat8158Wrong, there are several Mini games which rely on fast circling the analogue stick, e.g. the „fishing“ mini game and at least 2-3 more games.
Just 23 seconds in and I gotta stop you. "Nintendo" being a generic word for a video game console *well* predates the N64, The NES started this phenomenon. We could probably have an actual discussion about whether this or the SNES was the most iconic console, though.
I 100%'d Unicorn Overlord because I loved the gameplay so much. You can imagine my jaw dropping when I saw Ogre Battle 64 in action. I need to play that right now!
To me, every single one of them has. They look like games, they play like games and for some reason the polygon style has been my favorite ever since. If you compare that with what we have today, where they all try to be ''realistic'' both with graphics and gameplay and every game only has you play as humans, instead of all the random creatures and machines in the olden days, it all makes sense. Nothing beats the N64 for me personally.
Compared to the PS1, most N64 games have aged greatly. The lack of CDs prevented the size of games could get and could't have cut scenes, but one thing the N64 had is that it was a 3D graphic machine. Perfect at the time it came out to show what could be done with 3D games. Now thew main issue with todays gaming is the lack of compatibility with HD televisions.
Disagree, both consoles look like ass when upscaled and hold up well with CRT filters. N64 games are too low poly and its textures too low res for its raw output to hold up.
"It's also probably responsible for your mom calling every console you own for the rest of time a Nintendo." No, that started with the original NES, not the N64. Also, Superman 64 did not age poorly. It sucked backed then just as much as it sucks now.
There is very little to say about N64 3D graphics. Less jagged edges compared to the Playstation and Saturn but with most games the textures and colours just look blurred and washed out, lack of storage capacity on the carts.
Still the top games on the N64 look dimensions superior compared to the best games on psx and Saturn. As much as I love MGS or Panzer Dragoon Saga, their graphical fidelity pales in comparison to games like Turok 2, Perfect Dark, Conker, Star Fox etc.
not to undercut your "other story" but the only game console that made anyone call every videogame console a "nintendo" was the original nintendo/famicom
Mario Party 1 was an analog stick killer, though. If you're playing on original hardware and don't want to deal with part wear, I'd stay away from it. Anyways, Cat Quest 3! 😅
As someone who grew up in the Wii era and didn’t play most N64 games until much later, I can say that many of them are still good even if I don’t have nostalgia from my childhood. I’ll say though that you missed some good games, such as Kirby 64 and Dr Mario 64, and I’d personally say that while Mario Party 2 is a really good game and 3 is probably in my top 3 for the entire series, 1 was already outdated by the time 2 came out. Between many of the mini games being painful to play with all the button mashing and stick spinning, the fact that many 1v3s were literally unwinnable for one side or the other, the “items”, etc I definitely wouldn’t say it’s a good game.
Good video. I agree with your list, at least with the ones I played. I'd say Superman 64 didn't age poorly because it never was a good game. I had it and it was just terrible at the time too. The controls were terrible, the gameplay was bad, and it looked bad too. It just wasn't fun. Another game I do still go back and play and I think aged well is Mischief Makers. It focused on being a good 2D platformer with some 3D and effects that took advantage of the N64 hardware. The controls are pretty good too. It's a pretty odd game and maybe not for anyone, but I think it feels just as good to play today as it does then because of its focus on a good 2D game that is enhanced with some 3D, rather than 3D were held back by the limitations of the hardware like a lot of N64 games that didn't age as well.
Yeah, agree with all of them for the most part. One game that I think ranks up there that most people probably wouldn't consider is Doom64. The original Doom engine used sprites, and you could certainly tell. IDK if Doom64 was sprites but it certainly doesn't LOOK that way, they look like 3D models, and the texture is *much* better. I think it aged beautifully, IMO it looks more GC level than it does N64, I think it aged well, even if it wasn't popular.
This list was definitely needed, because the N64 is a console that benefits heavily from nostalgia goggles and those who don't have fond memories of the console will point out its graphical shortcomings. But that generation was uncharted territory for the industry and those graphics were revolutionary at the time.
@@tornoofo17 of course, but 16 bit systems with 2D sprites get a pass because that retro aesthetic is pleasing and 2D pixel art has made a resurgence in recent years. Majority of people do not find PS1/N64 3D graphics all that appealing today
@@InfiltrateIndustries I have to strongly disagree. When I was in 3rd grade Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64 were the best looking games at the time and really pushed the limits of what we thought was possible for video game graphics. Being able to explore a fully 3D environment without much lag was amazing
It is a cardinal sin to skip or dismiss the Wiiu partially or entirely ; I did not own one as a late twenties/early thirties biological male but I did get a chance to try it out a few years ago. It was a big improvement over the Wii and the Switch has yet to replicate it in my opinion; my excuse for not owning one was the fact that my buddies owned a Sony PS3 so I had to own one as well (to compete in online EA Sports FIFA servers). The Wiiu deserved more love and support than it initially got and received years later; again, my issues were that the selection of sports titles were a bit more robust on the other console devices and the Saint's Row 2 and GTA 4/Episodes from LC were sadly not ported to Nintendo WiiU's hybrid home or office console device (for some odd reason).
The only part that i disagree, is about Mario Party. MP3 has aged very well, and i still play it with friends to this day, but mario party 1 and 2 didn't aged well because of the controller destroying minigames, specialy nowadays that n64 aren't easy to find.

Goemon's Great Adventure needs some love!
I second that 💯
Before I even get 2 mins in, Ogrebattle 64 better be on here
👁👄👁
Ogre Battle 64 is such a gem
I’ve been subbed for a while and I never comment but that Dan Jacobs bit made me lose it. Lmao. YOU RRRRRAT.
Dude, yes, D64 whips! the music and atmosphere is probably some of the most unique on the N64
Good video and some good choices.
Just gonna come to bat for Shadows of the Empire because it's one of my top favorite Star Wars games of all time
F-Zero X was a lot of fun…
Actually, IS a lot of fun.
No outro? Also I would have replaced the wrestling game with “Shake Shake.”
I think you missed the point of Shallow Hal
95+% of people missed the point of the movie even back when it came out.
A story can have an admirable moral yet be told in an inept way that completely contradicts the supposed point.
0:30 which car game it is please tell 😮
Vigilante 8?
@@enriquegomez8114 thank you
@@JassiMATRIX Enjoy it.
that thumbnail is holding something else up
I'm surprised wipe out 64 didn't make this list that game looks so good still!
Cat Quest 3 please. Great video also 🎉
Nice, Ogre Battle 64 segway…😅
I'm just gonna add: Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon - Glover - Banjo Kazooie/Tooie - Re-Volt
No wave race 64?
😿
Wave Race holds up even better than F-Zero..
I hope I’m not too late for the Cat Quest 3! Please 🙏
Nice mix of expensive and affordable games!
In defense of superman 64, is not that it didn't age well, the game arrived dead for how bad it was.
This list was definitely needed, because the N64 is a console that benefits heavily from nostalgia goggles and those who don't have fond memories of the console will point out its graphical shortcomings. But that generation was uncharted territory for the industry and those graphics were revolutionary at the time.
You can say that about any older console. The N64 was class.
@@tornoofo17 of course, but 16 bit systems with 2D sprites get a pass because that retro aesthetic is pleasing and 2D pixel art has made a resurgence in recent years. Majority of people do not find PS1/N64 3D graphics all that appealing today
It wasn’t revolutionary graphics for the time… it was well made games that made the n64
@@InfiltrateIndustriesdefinitely was revolutionary. SM64 was mindblowing in 96/97.
I haven't beaten Cat Quest II yet, but I've enjoyed it so far. So Cat Quest III, pls!
Fun video! Cat Quest 3!
N64 is not the most iconic Nintendo console. You were probably just a kid when the N64 came out.
correction: nintendo didnt make new pokemon snap. BANDAI did. the digimon people mae one of the best looking pokemon games ever...
im late to the game here but you said cat quest free? Is it three or free?
Ogre Battle 64 is hands down one of the best N64 games ever made!
Mario Party 1 definitely aged terribly unless you have a special controller or the glove for it. 2 and 3 aged quite better.
What about Goldeneye and Perfect Dark 64? Super Mario 64? Biohazard 2? There are great N64 games not mentioned here.
