@Bzkxtt Nah Gotta give credit to Phoenix and the composer over Phillips on this one. He ran away from the crimescene because he was running from that darkness in himself....but then he felt it without the fear. He felt the control and the clarity of it all once he was alone... Then he simply just let the darkness flow through him through his dance... And finally landed on looking at his self, his true self, in that mirror.
That's what is amazing to me about this scene and the movie. He didn't have to say a word or even make a sound and people understood that the character was having a profound moment in his life.
What’s so striking about this scene is that after shooting 3 men, you truly believe the Joker is feeling a level of peace he has never felt before. What’s even more striking, is that you feel it with him. That’s what’s so incredible about this movie.
Comparing heath's performance to Joaquin's performance is like comparing apple to orange. Heath greatly portrayed joker as an agent of chaos that cannot be controlled by any means. While Joaquin phoenix joker is more like a character study of the joker thats the reason why joaquin have more rollercoaster of emotions. Heath's joker is more like an Action movie while Joaquin's joker is more like Drama movie. I like how they've portrayed their character no one outdid the other.
I would say Joaquins joker has more uncontrollable emotions because hes transforming. His thoughts unravel before our eyes. This is the movie where he lost his mind. In the dark night heathes joker is already a seasoned hardened madman
Agree but Ledgers was slightly more comic book accurate. Joaquin Phoenixes Joker isn’t really true to the character but it’s not supposed to be, this joker was always supposed to show a different side to the character, a more realistic version.
Not to mention, as great as Heath was, and as much as he contributed to the film/trilogy (a substantial amount) and as much as he did for the character itself (without Heaths OG performance we probably never get Jaquins) he still was just a SUPPORTING ROLE in that film/trilogy. ‘The Dark Knight’ is bigger than just that character. Christopher Nolan’s trilogy is bigger than just that character. Whereas ‘JOKER’ - like you said - is a deep character study that’s success was entirely dependent on how well that character was portrayed to us. Heath’s performance paved the way. It was legendary and without a doubt the high point of the film(s). But Joaquin WAS THE FILM. He carried it on his back the entire way. HOWEVER regardless of all of that.. Pound for pound, in a vacuum, frame by frame, if you’re objective and know your shit... Jaquins is still the better all around performance. Difficult to say but that’s just the way it is.
I'll never forget seeing this part for the first time. COMPLETE surprise and my jaw basically dropped. It's all so sad and hypnotizing that it just left me speechless. Needless to say, this scene sold me. Best movie ever.
I held my breath by the beauty and pain of this scene. I felt an explosion of emotion...and then questioned so much about myself afterwards. Absolutely consumed.
I agree. When I saw this first time In cinema, I almost drop tears. So sad and beautiful scene in every piece. Masterpiece remindable movie for next decades.
I remember watching this scene in the theater, everyone was totally hypnotized. We were all glued to the screen, and I haven’t experienced anything like that since.
When I saw The Dark Knight in theatres, my theatre was very "hypnotized" like you said when Heath Ledgers Joker escaped from jail and was riding with his head out of the police car. That too was a cinematic masterpiece.
Idk why but I'm against the idea that it's all in his head despite the obvious clues. Certain parts of it are absolutely in his head but like, there's no transformation of character if it's all a charade in his head. None of the amazing events from the ending ever happen if it's all imaginary. I like to think he really did kill Maury and start those riots simply because it makes the whole story so much better. Plus, why would he have imagined Bruce Wayne's parents dying in the exact fashion that they did in his head? I think certain parts are in his head but not the whole story.
Lyg3rBurg3rz no one said the entire movie is in his head. People are talking about the scenes with his “girlfriend”. They are all imaginary and never happened.
As a professional dancer, this scene is very shocking to me and *not because of his way of dancing, but what he transmits.* When he enters the bathroom, he does not know how to process the feeling of having committed a murder, so he begins to express it through a dance ritual. As the dance goes on, the Joker continues to dance but now in order to eliminate all the guilt he feels for killing those three people, and tries to convince himself that what he did is right. And finally, in the 1:34 minute we can see how unintentionally he ends up accepting evil in his soul and his movements begin to be faster and with confidence. All the feeling of guilt left, his ego rose, and his thirst for revenge is greater. Finally, when he look himself in the mirror, there is no return. His soul was completely poisoned.
I really like your breakdown but I see it just a little differently. I feel like his dance represents freedom. I feel like when he looked up into the light, he was finally free from all the things that were keeping him miserable. It's like he transformed into someone who feels like they can finally just let go, like a metamorphosis. I saw no guilt, just a release.
Here’s the thing about the film joker, I told all my friends how incredible this film is and said watch it it’s one of the best films ever made, each of them came back and said it was”ok”, I was stunned, I couldn’t understand how they weren’t blown away by this masterpiece. Then it clicked, I think you have to have suffered in life or be a little broken in your soul to really appreciate and get the films message, you have to feel how Arthur felt in his darkest moments and picture yourself in his shoes. Truly a one of a kind performance.
Yes, you need empathy for him. You know how it feels like if no one in this world cares for you, even if you dont understand what this exactly means (if you're a child for example). The quote of him "I didn't know all my life if I even existed." does express this extremely well to me. Such a experience changes your worldview fundamentally I think.
What’s even more crazy to think about, for me personally, is that there is no background music as he’s dancing. The music adds such a powerful tone to this scene but when you really think about it. There never was any music playing for Arthur. Perhaps it’s playing in his head but in reality he’s just dancing in a quiet run down bathroom by himself.
I genuinely feel dumb AF rn.. You know these little logical details that you don't pay attention to while watching a movie then once someone points it out you just can't stop thinking about it... That's it.
Melassassin :D yes originally he was suppose to run to the bathroom, wash off his makeup and I think hide his gun but the day they filmed it Joaquin and Todd changed it to a dance scene
I disagree, this scene has its own place but dc movies have in past had very strong & unsettling scene Eg. When batman interrogates joker in the dark knight, he had everything to lose and joker had none.
I love how with headphones in, I can notice him breathing heavily as he's beginning to take form and how his breathing gradually slows as he unwinds and uncoils. He sheds his fear and uncertainty as he morphs into himself.
In this scene he was dancing cautiously, slowly, unsure of his thoughts and actions. Locked in a bathroom so no one could see. Later in the movie he is dancing with confidence, fast and sure of himself. Dancing in public for the whole world to see. Those 2 scenes are a metaphor for his development throughout his journey and movie. Thats why it is beautifully done. This is an intellectual movie that claws at the mirror of our own society. At our own reality. And thats why it's controversial and a masterpiece
Establishment Disliker lol what is controversial about this movie? He shoots someone? All the controversy was a worked up theory that some joker lover was going to shoot up a theatre and even that was a hoax
The range he moves through emotions in this scene is insane. It's starts as a sheer panic, then a quiet calm, you literally can see the transition to this almost hypnotic therapy in his eyes. Even his hands are full of emotion, this man was brilliant through this entire movie!
I just saw a comment that read "I held my breath by the beauty and pain of this scene. I felt an explosion of emotion...then questioned so much about myself afterward. Absolutely consumed." And the comment immediately after says "he's just vibing" lmfao
Fun fact: This scene was originally scripted as the Joker running into the bathroom and hiding his gun/washing his makeup. Phoenix and Philip changed it to Arthur dancing the day of shooting while at the set.
You also have to give Hildur for her music on this scene. Phoenix was inspired by the music playing on that bathroom that's why he danced instead of washing the mask off. Nb: Hildur was making the score based on script, she never watched any scene before writing the music.
"I played it for him (the soundtrack) and he loved it, and he just started doing this dance to it" - Todd Phillips Sounds pretty much like an improvisation to me
Idk if it was just the people in the theater I was in when we saw this with my wife and brother, but I have NEVER been in a room where every single person was mesmerized by the total package of this scene. The acting, the music, everything just blew everyone away. It was complete silence, everyone was locked in. I wish I could experience seeing this movie again for the first time.

@@danielvasquez5761 the vanity fair video with Todd Phillips on Joker's opening scene says some buildings were added in to make the Gotham seem more claustrophobic
Josh Witte it actually was improvised by Joaquin. There’s an interview with Todd Phillips(director) on RUclips explaining that the scripted scene was for Arthur to hide his gun and wash off his makeup in the bathroom.
Kevkas04 Ah yeah, he also gave him a quick note about the character that he was one with music and Joaquin got the idea of a fluid dance from that. It shows his dedication to the character.
Not necessarily improvised. The original script called for something else. Once they shot it didn’t feel right. So Todd and Joaquin sat on set alone thinking what to do with the scene to show the correct emotions with no words. Todd played the musical score hoping to inspire something and Joaquin was inspired to dance. That’s not really improvising but I know what you mean
Phoenix really took it to heart when Phillips told him that Arthur always had music in him. 2 improvised dance scenes that fit perfectly and wondrously.
People think that Arthur fully transformed into Joker at the end of the film, but it was this scene right here. He enters the bathroom as Arthur, the dance is his transformation, and the moment he looks at himself in the mirror at the very end: Joker. Seriously genius filmmaking.
This is one of the moments when tears started to come out from my eyes and I couldn't control them. Art at its finest, drama and transformation. God, you can hear the breath. One of the Best scenes in cinema history
This scene is totally improvised. Not scripted. And it feels so much more real. Phoenix and the director, was alone shooting this scene. Still hanging around set, after everyone had left, trying to figure things out. They were together for two hours, trying to figure out the scene according to script. But it didn't fit the mood they were after. So, they started throwing out idea's, which went nowhere. So, they went to set, fired up the camera... and Phoenix just went with what he felt like doing at that moment. Slowly dancing. Slowly transforming himself from all guilt, despair etc, and becoming a more of a figure letting go of everything he has done, embracing it, as the new him. Transforming from empath, to psychopat. So, like most iconic scenes in movies, are always improvised. Hench this is one of those moments in movie history. Because its more real, more flowing. Which reminds me of the final scene in BladeRunner, when Rutger Hauer gives his final speech in the rain. That scene is also 100% improvised, just to throw out an example...
No, there's an important factor who lead to this. The music! The director told Joaquin he got this track the day before, so he played it and Joaquin started dancing. Then, as you said happened
I don't have to dig. But honestly, the "dark" feelings are actually ones of love. You hate injustice, so you're angry. You want to punish those who are evil, so you're bitter. But there's a catch. 1. You have to assess whether your perceived threat is real, or an illusion created from an earlier trauma. 2. You have to focus on "showing them" by succeeding in life. Revenge will not make you feel better. Success will. Your pain can be your strength. You can outlast your competitors by sheer force of will. So, while I've lived my whole life with an inner well of anger and bitterness, I have learnt to control it and use it to benefit me. I don't need to indulge it or strengthen it, because there is an infinite supply. It will always be there, waiting for if/when society collapses. And if not, I've prepared for that, too. Succeed in peace, succeed in war.
This scene was the one that shocked me the most out of the entire movie, even more that the Murray scene. I can't really explain why, but I remember watching this in the cinema (everyone completely silent) and being unable to process exactly what had just happened. Joaquin Phoenix did an impeccable job.
It is shocking because he just murdered 3 guys out of rage, but after he killed the 3rd one he came to his sense to realize he had done something terrible! So he starts running out of fear even without no one noticing what he did or chasing him. He gets to the bathroom clearly very scared, but he lets out what he really felt in a dance. The dance represents power and freedom, which he felt for the first time and loved it! This is the moment in which Arthur dissapears and the Joker takes his place. That's why it's so shocking.
he did have a choreographer for other scene and practiced dancing. however this scene was originally completely diff and kinda cheesy imo. Joaquin improvised this specific dance on the spot with no choreographer present, now that's talent
Deeply affected me. As I am very, very short and have been a victim of bullying and violence/bashings my entire life it made my heart feel joy that someone fought back, even if it was just a movie. Incredible
The mind blowing fact that, the producers were about to do only two secs on the bathroom scene, it was meant for Joaquin to get in, Change, Stacy the gun and get out, but he refused to do the scene 🎬 like that, and started dancing, the producers took the shots of him dancing, and did this, and turned to be one of the most epic scenes ever 🙏 dude worth every penny they paid him
He didn't refuse to do the scene, while they were waiting for things to be set up Todd randomly shared a piece of audio with Joaquin that Guðnadóttir had composed for the film, on hearing it he instinctively started dancing and they both knew in that instance that they should do that instead of the scripted monologue.
Yep, this scene comforts the unfortunate. Sound kinda obnoxious to say but if you havent really felt the sadness Arthur has felt then, in a way, you can never fully understand
I’ve seen all of the great movies of 2019. Films such as The Irishman, OUATIH, Parasite, 1917. But in my honest opinion, no film brought a bigger level of authenticity as this masterpiece right here
This scene alone (also the Blood smile at the end) was worth him getting the Oscar. Joaquin Phoenix is a F*ing Master , he simply nailed this character.
I dont know what it is about this scene if the color, the music, the subtle moves, the camera work, the make up or pace, but its beautiful, its like a short film on its own
Usually when I watch a movie with the joker in it, i think of the joker as the actor. I see Jared Leto, or Heath Ledger. When watching this movie, I didn’t see Joaquin Phoenix. I saw the Joker
For me personally it's more easy for me to see Joaquin than it is for me to see ledger. And I'm not just saying that because of ledgers makeup, because even when Joaquin has the makeup on I'm still able to see that it's him.
Oh my God. I remember the entire theater becoming eerily quiet during this part of the film. We were completely mesmerized by this scene, with our eyes transfixed and experiencing intense chills and goosebumps. I will never forget that feeling. This movie was one of the best things to happen to the world, just five months before the pandemic hit.
That's not a fair comparison. I agree that this is better than Endgame but we're dealing with completely different narratives here. The MCU spent years creating, developing, building up, breaking down, winning and losing. It had to build a team. It had to develop characters. It had to spend years to culminate it into the overall Infinity Saga. The overall package was an awesome finale. However, Joker focused on a much smaller scale. It told a complete character piece that focused on one guy. There wasn't even a specific antagonist he was up against in this film. Just because a story took many films to tell, it doesn't automatically become worse than the other.
Endgame is like watching a football game and this movie is like watching an opera. People enjoy both for specific reasons. Doesn’t necessarily mean one is inherently better than the other.
You can't really compare a movie revolving around fantasy people doing fantasy things to one that is made to remind others of the uncomfortable reality. The former is for entertainment, the latter is to send a meaningful message. Very different pieces of work.
Well, I have mental health issues as well. When I saw this scene, I was shocked. I cried. Because I used to do that too. When depression hits so hard that I want to kill myself, I turn off all the lights and just start to dance. HIS dance just looks like my dance. It was like... Like someone looked inside my mind and created a character who represents my depression, my violent thoughts. I just feel this deep connection with him trough this one scene... This is a masterpiece. This. Is art.
I dance when I feel like half the world abandoned me too (not gonna define this because it’s private). I dance except that it’s not slow or anything at all, it’s just me chicken dancing around to music in my head so that I don’t feel sad anymore, it usually gives me more mental break down.
Hey man the same happened to me. I wanted to kill myself and I had so much pain and sadness. I danced in the dark and let my feelings flow. It was beautiful. I love this scene in the movie.
In my opinion there is no doubting it. From the music, to literally everything else about this. It’s one of the most beautiful yet unsettling scenes of all time. That music is absolutely bone chilling.
Nearly every scene before this point you see how stiff he is, how tight he holds himself together. But here, we still him loose. Free. Like all those chains on him fell off him for the first time.
The murder of the three men and this dance was the conception of Joker, the reveal of Arthur's childhood was the birth of Joker, and the public execution of Murray was the baptism of Joker.
I recently found out that this scene is an adlib by joaquin, this scenes was created by him. It gives me chills to know how legendary of an actor he is.

As a professional dancer, this scene is very shocking to me and *not because of his way of dancing, but what he transmits.*
When he enters the bathroom, he does not know how to process the feeling of having committed a murder, so he begins to express it through a dance ritual.
Nice breakdown. I never looked at it like that.
@@Archedgar Thx!!
That's a really cool way of looking at it! Never thought of it that way..

This.
Saying "this is ok" after watching this movie should be ilegal.

Brilliant words. Thanks!
That's what made me love this scene even more :)
Haunting, isn't it??

In this scene he was dancing cautiously, slowly, unsure of his thoughts and actions. Locked in a bathroom so no one could see. Fun fact: This scene was originally scripted as the Joker running into the bathroom and hiding his gun/washing his makeup. Phoenix and Philip changed it to Arthur dancing the day of shooting while at the set.
The smartest decision they ever made to make this movie an instant classic.
You also have to give Hildur for her music on this scene. Phoenix was inspired by the music playing on that bathroom that's why he danced instead of washing the mask off.
Nb: Hildur was making the score based on script, she never watched any scene before writing the music.

Beautifully said. I don't think there's a more succinct and accurate statement I've read about this film than that. Thank you for that
Fun fact:Scene wasn’t in script it was improvised by Joaquin Phoenix
Well, Todd Phillips instructed him to do something erratic in the bathroom to show the jokers mindset.
Yeah, that's bullshit
When was the other? The Murray Franklin Show or the police car dance?
Davis Phillips When he shot that pistol off by accident.
And those who were dancing were called crazy by those who couldn’t hear the music

That scene is also 100% improvised, just to throw out an example...
lmaoo that's what they say and so you just believe it and parrot it to other sheep

This movie makes you dig down deep into your feelings. The bad ones
Im glad it does...otherwise we will never have the balls to defend ourselves.

"Those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music"
Credit who said it. Friedrich Nietzsche.
Endgame had over a dozen films leading up to it, and Todd Philips made a better movie then Endgame with just one film.
Kagith exactly. Both movies are phenomenal, but can’t be compared at all
Endgame is like watching a football game and this movie is like watching an opera.
Endgame was entertainment, Joker was art.
