Heating with a Wood Boiler

  • I give a description of my heating system. It is a Froling S3 50 Turbo Wood Boiler. The boiler is 80% efficient. It is a gasification boiler which means is burns the smoke after burning the wood. This provides high efficiency with little smoke and ash. The system also uses two 400 gallon storage tanks to capture the heat from the boiler to use to heat the floor. I burn the boiler very hot and store the heat in the tanks. This allows me to not have to keep the boiler burning all day long every day. Some very cold days, I may need to fire it only once a day. Other times, I may only need to fire it once every couple days. I also describe the automatic backup system that is a natural gas fired boiler that the Froling system can automatically activate if the wood boiler is not hot enough to keep the building up to temperature.

    Does this boiler also heat the domestic hot sanitary water (for showers, kitchen taps etc..)?

      I have it configured to heat domestic hot water when I am using the boiler during the winter. I have electric hot water heaters to heat my domestic water when I am not using the boiler the rest of the year. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Nice set-up! If you have free natural gas on the property, why don't you just use natural gas?

      Thanks for watching and for commenting. I am trying to reduce my use of fossil fuels and have plenty of hardwood on the property that make excellent heating sources. The Froling Wood boiler produces a very efficient burn so I am not adding a lot of smoke in the air.

    How many face cords a year do you use, approx?

    • @goldnerwoodlandfarm9305
      @goldnerwoodlandfarm9305  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for watching. I am not sure what a face cord is. A standard cord of wood is 4’x4’x8’. Or 128 cubic feet. I used about 5 this winter

    You said you have an access to free natural gas.
    Why would you hustle with wood boiler than?

    • @goldnerwoodlandfarm9305

      I have a couple reasons that you may or may not agree with. I am trying to minimize my use of fossil fuels where I can. I also enjoy exercising and cutting firewood. I have ready access to good hardwood trees on my property. In many cases i don’t need to cut trees down I can use trees that are wind damaged. In other cases it makes sense to thin the forest to enable the remaining trees to grow better. I would be doing tree harvesting and clean up anyway. Why not use them. Thanks for watching my video and for commenting.

      The insulation is Certainteed 3” type 75 FHC 25. It has helped control the temperature in my barn. Good luck and thanks for watching and commenting.

    I have the exact same thing . I heat 7000 sq ft . I have 2000 gal of hot water storage. I live in northern Canada. I have run it for 7 years now. What was the rough cost.

    • @goldnerwoodlandfarm9305
      @goldnerwoodlandfarm9305  Год назад

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Wow, 7,000 sq ft. Nice. I am very happy with my first winter results. My house should be finished this fall and will also use the Froling wood boiler for heat. The rough cost was $20k to $25k. Not sure how much of the labor was tied to the boiler install versus other services.

      How long do you typically get between firings in typically winter weather heating 7000sq ft and how long of a burn to recover your tanks for what differential 😊

    • @salmonhunter7414
      @salmonhunter7414 7 месяцев назад

      @@dantheman1283 At an average temp of -10c day time and night time temp of -20C I burn one load of wood in 24 hours heating my shop at 15C and my home at 22C My shop is 2800sq ft with 22foot high ceilings. Both my home and shop are very very well insulated . I feel the 2000 gallon of hot water storage is the key. Once up to temp I just have to maintain. In fall and spring I may go 2 or 3 day with one burn. One burn takes about one wheelbarrow full of hard wood oak or maple.

    Have you ever overheated the boiler and had to reset the high-limit thermostat. I just did mine and cannot find the reset.

    • @goldnerwoodlandfarm9305
      @goldnerwoodlandfarm9305  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, I have overheated my boiler a couple times. The reset switch, is a very small button with a screw cap over it. You have to remove a cover on the very top of the boiler and pull back the insulation. The cap is on the front edge under the cover. You need a small pointer like a nail or very small screw driver to push the reset button. Good luck.

    How many lbs of wood do you burn a day ?

    • @goldnerwoodlandfarm9305
      @goldnerwoodlandfarm9305  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Depending on the weather I typically burn one full load of wood a day or every other day. We have not had a lot of continually below freezing temperatures this winter. A full load is probably 50 to 70 lbs of hardwood, cherry, oak, maple, and hickory.
