In CA we now have the problem with ecu tuning during smog checks. They now plug you in to check date of tune and if it doesn't match year of car it's an automatic fail. Even if the tune makes you run cleaner. They even went so far as to have stock ecu tunes on file. So we can't even flash one without being red flagged. My 323ci passed smog with the ebay cats but ad much as I'd love to get an aftermarket ecu or flash mine, I'd be running a fail risk
what really makes me mad about the whole thing is that passenger cars are a small source of pollution compared to the corporations that are regularly paying off the EPA to look the other way at their emissions output etc
In the UK, it is not a crime as such to remove catalytic converters but the resulting increase in emissions is definitely illegal (covered under Sections 42 & 75 of the Road Traffic Act 1988) and would most likely fail the MoT test (similar roadworthiness test to the annual inspections required by some US states). Maybe some clever remapping might be able to reduce the emissions. In short, don't do it.
So explain to me how a failed catalytic converter, that is downstream of the exhaust manifold, can have dust magically find its way back through the intake manifold and grenade the engine??
Do you have to smog test in PA? KY doesn't have that nonsense. I remember in the past having to do that in OH too but they dropped it many years ago as well.
Even though mine is still good but in SC we don't have to get our cars inspected, plus we don't have issues with people stealing them either. Muffler shops here just fix it for 30 to 50 dollars if they go bad.
My 2015 X5 d M Sport cat broke off at the flange after warranty work . The bracket that holds it up was not installed so it broke. Bmw wanted $8000 CAD to replace it. I took it to a performance shop and had it all deleted and EGR blocked, tuned. No more DEF. Fuel mileage is way better now.
I totally agree with Nathan but he left out a couple points. First, without cat(s) you will get a check engine light(Unless you tune around it), but I'm taking my E64 M6 to California and ANY tune will blackball you from registration in that state- as of last July. That means I couldn't even sell the car according to CARB. They can detect tunes even if your return back to stock. And what is a "Zahzt"? Great video Nathan.
@@user-qz7qo9mt6r Temp sensor? do you you mean O2 sensor? All cars with cats have an O2 sensor before and after.the cat. The second one determines the performance of the cat. My car only has temp sensors on air intake and coolant. Not on the exhaust.
Nathan after dealing with BMW Corp in NJ they told me to have the car sent to a dealer. 2014 750 lix M Sport engine is seize, spoke to nearby dealer he told me that they have over 30 in the states N63TU I was priced $5000. For a reman now Corp is saying nothing for the CCP it has ended so now the dealer want me to pay full price to have the BMW shop install crazy !! Instead of just Purchasing the engine from BMW which they told me I could do before help
They run the fuel and extra Rich when they're cold to get the converter to light off quicker so when the converter is bad or not there they're really stinky when they start.
If anyone thinks Australias regulations are any more than window dressing, just remember we dont have routine smog testing. And thank god, because cars (and especially, nice cars) are expensive enough here already!
PAM.. Public Awareness Message. totally agree about the cat not helping once you plug all the numbers together.. ya.. its a big paper-filer, for the companies to give the politicians and non-car ppl who want to 'save the whales' and trees.. but have never even SEEN a wrench.. but ya. nice vid.
While Green house gasses from battery manufacturing and end of life are higher the GHG reduction over the life of an EV are way, way less. Bottom line is that they are better for the environment even if they’re not as entertaining.
Does it smell like rotten eggs? Cause my car I just bought has a Borla Exhaust and the middle cat is a magna flow style. I'm wondering if the precats are hollowed out. I've had multiple people complain about the exhaust smell when I get on it.
No with my opinion have you ever thought about just testing it to see if it even does anything I know you don't do too much with catalytic converters everybody else on RUclips tries to clean it and try to do something else with it some people use Sea phone some use a lot of other snake oil other than that some people have broken them down and use them as track cars so having a catalytic converter it's not that all that important especially if it's like 30 years old and if you use it just for track what does it matter each states are different of laws and so on
The way I see it is not the consumers fault. It's the factories that make these cars. By putting all that crap on there for emissions. They can get around that. Just make fuel that doesn't pollute the air. They can do that but they won't do it because they want to sell more catalytic converters for profit. It's all a big scam. And you know that. You buy a new car and you own it paid off you should be able to do what you want to do with your car it's yours. Modify or whatever. They should not stick their nose in our business. The main fact is like I said before. Make fuel for these cars so they won't pollute so simple that's a solution but they won't do it. That's all I got to say
It depends highly on where your 02 sensors are located. If your upstream sensors are before the cats you can pull them and put your downstream sensors in spark plug non foulers which space your 02 sensors away from the exhaust pipe. This worked for me I got no check engine lights on my 2500hd truck. And it runs great. Smells fine too. Stunk for about a month and went away. You can also run a gallon or 2 of laquer thinner in your gass tank and that will clean out your cats.

Simple answer: piggyback tune. Easily removable for inspection/smog check and totally undetectable after being removed.
In NYC they remove your Cat for free.
what really makes me mad about the whole thing is that passenger cars are a small source of pollution compared to the corporations that are regularly paying off the EPA to look the other way at their emissions output etc
They move their operations offshore where there aren't regulations. They then import those finished goods duty-free.
Where in the world do you get that idea! Totally fake.
Follow the money, it drives the precious metals market and taxes the consumer to keep us down.

Always straight up pov, I'm loving the flipping rigs in and out, keeps it interesting.

Funny how the EPA has yet to shut down burning man but don’t let them catch you with a deleted diesel truck

I live in California. I have a E39 525i. Where is the best and most affordable place to buy California carb compliant catalytic converter?
did you ever do a m54 valve body solenoid fix? mine jumps when engaging auto 5 speed into gears while parked?

Us Californians have to have any replacement part approved by the state, so if BMW stops supplying parts we’re screwed.
Come to texas, just don’t bring commie with you!🤣

In CO they have a "age of vehicle" fee on your yearly registration for older vehicles. It's all a sham..FFS...
I already bought my spare cat converters, installed one on a vehicle that had been punched because I couldn't stand the stink of uncatalized exhaust.
They run the fuel and extra Rich when they're cold to get the converter to light off quicker so when the converter is bad or not there they're really stinky when they start.
Back on the day we used to dump some kerosene in the cats, would clean them right up.

Did you say the N52 sometimes stop up? For me its kinda hard to tell if you say N or M sometimes.
Ironic in my county in Idaho emission testing is going away in July 2023
All about control. Never about the real issue

I thought the rotten egg smell came from clogged cats!
Lol mine came from running rich due to not having cats anymore.
Love Nathan's Garage so much I named my 1st born after them lol
The other side of things. How do you prevent convertors' from being stolen?
Use a good SHIELD. Lots of makers out there.
My 84 Lincoln runs so lean itd pass a smog test wide open. Damn cfi throttle body injected 302.
N20 Catalytic converter low efficiency It almost has 300000 If I do get a high efficiency code How do I Adjust downstream 02

Fuuuuuuuuuuuck the EPA!!! All my cars are catless
Good thing we don't have that none sense crap

I've never been a fan of tuning. You can easily spend more than the value of the car. If you want better performance, just buy a better car.
Depends.. sometimes you like the way the car handles and looks, like the ND Miata. Just needs better sound and a bit more power for me personally.
Living in America I should be released on without bail!
FJB & The EPA
Get rid of the epa or reign them in.
Only if you get caught :)
FIRST!!!
With the zero and low emissions cars the converters are not needed, it's 70's technology that we are stuck with...
Im glad my country doesnt enforce whatever laws in the mainland
NEW ? Maybe new to your channel, but this mod has been around since the inception of CATS.
