- the REAL way to paint rustoleum chrome to get that luster!
Here we take a look at some Motorama clips & i show how to properly spray and what to use to contain the finish on the Rustoleum bright coat metallic finish to achieve the best results and luster using my Banshee ebay swingarm as a pilot for the test.
Also throwing in some clips from this years 2018 motorama event here in Pennsylvania at the farm show complex!! it was amazing as usual with tons of beautiful exhibits and plenty of horsepower packed shows!

Damn man, that looked badass before the clear coat. Still looks great. I've used this on my truck wheels and it held up okay.
Michael Sabo thanks, idk why i had a few issues it was like sortof rubbing off into my hands whenever i handled it. I tried the krylon out of desparity and it holds up great! No chenical reaction or anything and a nice hard clear on top!
Stupid Fast. I've used krylon paints be for and was not happy with the results...Sherwin Williams makes better spray bomb paints.
Rodney Brand i will give them a try! I have always liked rustoleum but it angers me hownit flakes with clear alot of times...
Stupid Fast. I think you will be very pleased with the results...CHEERS 🍺🍺🍺🇺🇸🇺🇸
You did not let it cure sufficiently. I've used this several times on foam costume pieces (both flexible craft foam with a black primer base, and hard pink insulation foam right over top the Elmer's coat), it is definitely able to be handled after sufficient dry time. If you put a lot on, it will take longer. Likewise if it's below 70 where its curing.
Cut to the chase man!!Plenty of other places on the web to see nice cars
The high-end chrome paints use a primer and then a coat of gloss black first. Doing the same might make it glossier. Also if you're having issues with paint flaking virtually guaranteed your surface prep is to blame. Has to be absolutely clean and prepped so the paint can grab onto it.
Interesting i thought alsa was a flat black. Thats a great idea! The issue i have noticed was touching it made it smear and the finish come off
All chrome paints use a different setup, it wouldn't make a difference with Rust-Oleum
@@otallono Maybe but have you ever tried it?
Use water based polyurethane gloss varnish first, brush on or spray, let that dry, then use the krylon clear coat spray. Problem solved. You'll have that nice mirror finish still.
I called Rustoleum tech support. They said it’s intended for interior use only and anything that touches it will tarnish the shine.
Pssst.... I sprayed this 10 years ago and all clear coats chemically eat the shine. It also needs 8 days in warmth to dry if rattle can spraying then micro cloth rub off the dust paint that dries on way to surface. It is best flooded on surface so vertical near impossible. The only thing with this or better airbrush chrome alcohol based paint is clear floor wax over it after curing days through an airbrush in light coats, acrylic wax is hard after drying and you can polish out mar marks.
You'll never clear coat chrome paint. I've done the same shit in my beetle. Screwed the chrome. Striped again, painted and let dry in the sun. Perfect.
"looks like a mirror"...yeh, if you just took a shower...!
Video doesnt do it justice because i used a potatoe to film 😅👊
Thanks for this video. I sprayed a large picture frame days ago and it still leaves marks whenever I touch it.
Glad to know it's (probably) the spray paint and not me
Looks like nickel not chrome ,but it doesn't look bad how does it look after you handle it or take a rag to it
Next time instead of clear coat do 1 light coat followed by 80% coat 15 minutes later and then do final coat 100% at about 45 minutes. After dry for at least 2 days, 5-7 even better. Then wet sand 1000 grit and polish. Add wax of choice after 30 days.
George Scott thank you, best feedback/help recieved thus far
Try the MAX2K two part clear. It is a special spray can that is a two part system. Fuel proof!
Donald Branscom i will give that a try!
Rustoleum products suck. I know. I've used plenty and it all sucks. If it says rustoleum run.
Byootytribute!!!!!!! So!ooooo! RIGHTeous!!!!!!!!!
Can you send me a link to the paint I want to paint my bike chrome
So the secret of chrome paint is to use a different chrome paint?
Pretty much 🤣
How would it look on plastics does it had the same bond Please come and back it let me know
So let me get this straight, you watched this swing arm for six years, payed over 200 bucks for it and paint it with a rattle can? Then bugger it up with the clear coat and say its alright or good enough for your project! Dude, its your project but be better than that! Get with the program and set yourself apart from the rest of the Auto/Cycle hacks! There are so many more options out there other than a can of spray paint! Home chroming kits, HVLP, and Powder Coating to name a few. I can however, respect what your attempting to accomplish. Just Please Don't touch the Chevy! Feel free to do your thing with the Ford though! Peace!
Your absolutely right man, i was thinking about buying a home powder coating kit and re doing it. Its been a few years since ive sprayed it but i was never 100 percent happy with it yah know. Thanks for the kick in the ass i needed that, also props to being a chevy guy 👊 i am also a chevy guy. That fox has a ls mated with a turbo 400 transmission and has seen 9s in the quarter 👊🤙👍
Got tons of videos of her on the channel 💪
cut out all the filler shit from the video and reupload, then its a nice viceo!
Sorry but that looks nothing like chrome you might as well have used a silver color.
💀
Gasoline resistant ?
You are lucky the Krylon didn't ripple over the Rustoleum. They usually don't like each other, especially Krylon over Rustoleum primer. Never tried the chrome & clear like you did though yet. Looks good !!
I found that so called chrome rustoleum paint dulls any where it is touched even when it has cured for days .... then if you do clear it .... it just dulls to a silver paint look .... better off just using a bright aluminium paint because the aluminium paint seems much more durable then that fake chrome paint ..... This is what I found when painting car parts with it and seems from watching your video the same kinda experience happened to you .... I found just using a rustoleum aluminium paint was better in the end result .... Like your car in the background it is sweet !!!
69 NovaGuy thanks! Ill try the aluminum next, i tried letting it cure for almost an entire week and no matter what it couldnt be touched without dulling. The krylon killed some of the luster when applied but had best result in the end.
Also which one the 69 chevelle or the 91 fox? Thanks!
10 mins after ya spray it go over it with spraymax 2k clear out of a can.
i used the same paint and it looked grey no chrome look to it at all.
You have to wait few days before you touch it or apply the clear coat
The crinkling comes from not letting the Rustoleum base paint dry a good week or more. If you let it dry a week you won't get crinkling.
I tried that it still crinkled in certain areas 👊
Actual video starts at 5 minutes, 30 seconds, everything before that was crap. A little surprised this guy is painting wide open in his closed up shop area with stuff everywhere....... No mask / ventilation either... .
Good times?
The crinkle look on the frame is a reaction from using different brands. Every brand name has alittle different chemical composition. It's called crazing.
Understood but they are the same brand both cans are rustoleum, using enamel for the green and 2x clear enamel for the clear so theyre the same. It seems to be a common thing for rustoleum
Was going to watch the video but the introduction blew away my hearing.
Norman Bates dually noted. Shortly after this video i learned how to use volume control on my editing software :)
Wow, first time ever seeing guers iced tea in a RUclips video
It will turn silver/ gray in a month!
you have to do gloss black first ,
I never mix my brands. I've found this makes a difference. Will have to try the chrome spray on my Sporty.
Ant Squirly i dont like to mix either however this was best method i could find to trap the chrome yah know.
I’ll never know what your chrome looks like cause halfway through second commercial for stuff I not caring about I checked out
Dude the vid is 3 years old. Get over it
the rustoleum instructions on the can say "Don't clear coat".
Imagine trying something outside the norm for a possible amazing result 🤔🤔🤔
Do you think if it cured for a few days it wouldn’t rub off?
Possibly. Maybe ill do a second round of this
Shit $225 bucks dude that's fucking cheap love it
Joe Calandra right!!!! And its a good quality?!? Who wiulda thought lol!!
You didn't let the green cure long enough before applying the clear. I wouldn't recommend krylon anything.
Moon Shine i let it alone for 72 hours cure time... cant use rustoleum clear on it because it krinkles and flakes off directly after painting it... ive tried 2 ways, first i tried letting it flash dry for less then an 30 minutes and then clearing with rustoleum and to no avail it krinkled and flaked. Then i tried the 72 hours and same thing with rustoleum, but the krylon doesnt do it, im not a fan of krylon anything either but their clears chemical structure seems to mix fairly well with the rustoleum enamels in my experiences.
Spray paint of most any brand doesn't completely cure for 5 to 7 days.
Moon Shine good to know! I had jo idea, ill give that a try next time
@@StupidFastJohn usually clear coat of any brand will react with paint if it's out of the can. Try Spray Max 2K clear coat and then update us when you do. .... And obviously let the paint cure for about a week or more, like the other guy said, before you do this. But, anyhow, this brand is best to not mess up your paint anyway if you get a few days impatient lol
Between each coats your to wipe the chrome dust off with a microfiber rag then spray another coat then wipe again, then Only a 2K clearcoat only
Hey John was your banshee stock bore when you got it ?
Yes
U can't clear it want work
I have done a moderate amount of research on chrome paint. The really good looking actual mirror finish chrome paint systems are not cheap, costing from approximately $200 and up! For everything else, you can get some really nice finishes from paint like this. The best clear coat to use to not dull the finish seems to be an automotive type catalyzed 2 part urethane clear. It doesn't change the finished look and is going to be extremely durable. Your results may vary, so always do a test panel first to verify results. One more thing, spraying with Future (Pledge) floor polish seems to preserve the finish as well, but will not be as durable. 👍
6:02 ???? Mirror Shine.
Should of stripped and polished that Swing-arm. Would look Bad Ass. Just put Decals on the Side.
6:00 NOTHING like a "mirror shine". Cannot see reflections, only shadows.
I did a review on Amazon regarding Rustoleum silver paints years ago. They don't harden well. The gold , copper, and other colors do fine but their aluminum, silver, chrome are all crap. Do not use them. They are the worst paints Rustoleum makes. They need to rethink their formula.
Timothy yea your exactly right man!
I used the chrome on an art piece. Followed direction to the T. Perfect humidity and temp. That garbage does not get hard. The next 12 hours later it was still soft. I thought maybe this was an isolated occurrences. I tried it again and the same result. I then took the empty spray paint to Walmart and did get a refund. I bought the aluminum metallic and the bright coat silver. Same F*ckin results, all of them. Oh, and they have a similar smell that is inherent to what ever the chemical is to make the paint silver. Man , I was pissed. This line is pure crap. Thing is , I never have a problem with other colors. The 2X double coverage is fantastic paint for a spray paint. It covers even and smooth. Delivers a brilliant finish and dries quick. I contacted Rustoleum about the issue and they told me they would bring it to the attention of their lab. People who formulate it. Guess they never changed it. Avoid the silvers at all cost. So glad I'm not alone here. Oh and on Amazon I got 1.3k likes. Others found out the hard way this Sh*t stays soft. Maybe eventually it does get hard but I haven't got the time or patience to find out. Krylon silver works better and I hate Krylon. Good vid dude, I'll watch more...Subbed.
@@timothyhudson9976 thanks man! Great information, others have left comments about possibly baking the finish on, letting it dry for 7 days, using rustoleums own clear over top of it. There was more ideas but the ones above i have tried except baking and none of them worked. No matter what i did the finish stayed soft and would rub off to the touch.
Yeah same here, I kind of knew it would not be like the lid, 1st pray I was wow, but soon as it fried it went to bright silver/aluminium.
I am still trying to find a chrome spray paint (I can get in UK) that actually looks chrome or as close, did you ever find one?
@@mrmrgaming there are a few chrome coatings that work like alsa chrome, and theres another one i cant remember the name but its pretty good. If you youtube search chrome spray paint a guy did a review on it with over a million views and shows some of the best ones. Ill see if i can find it on my lunch break for yah.
450th dislike
I tried many mirror Chrome finishes and could not get anything to look skinnier than a matte silver. Nowhere near actual chrome for some reason. No reflection at all. Anybody know why? I tried on gloss black with primer and everything else I could think of
I never liked rattle can spray paint in chrome. It looks alright when you first spray it on almost like a bright aluminum color, but once you rub or buff it... it will discolor and dull right out even when you follow the instructions. I believe they now have better products for diy chroming if you look on ebay.
Yea im with you! They have alot of better products now 👊🤙
Not no good paint
*What you wanna do with this paint is spray it nice and shiny with 4 light coats like dude did in this vid. Important part is using a heat gun to heat and dry the paint between coats and after the final coat. Just hover the heat gun over the entire wet paint surface moving the gun constantly and not holding it in one spot. Then paint will be shiny, dry and hard.*
not sure what kind of mirrors you look into.....lol
enjoy your silver paint job
I haven’t seen the outcome of your clear coat attempt, but you should’ve tested it on a scrap first. My experience is that it actually didn’t want to stick to the metallic and ran down like oil. The clear I used was labeled “Automotive Quality.”
Its in the video? At the end. U can see how much it fades the chrome
@@StupidFastJohn l
How long did you let it set up before touching it?
abc def i let it set for 3 days but it was still cold out so it may not have been fully cured yet. And i know alsa is good but its really expensive and also application isnt exactly easy. I watched a few videos on it. Gotta lay the black down just right.
You got wait seven days to clear coat takes seven days for paint to fully cure
Yeah clear coat kills the chrome bro. I found out the hard way.
You and me both 🤙👊
I liked the video just for the intro!
👊🤙
Lol... Ive been rebuilding my late brothers snowmobile for 2yrs now. Stripped and repainted plenty of it. Engine compartment engine brakes and drive. Redone suspension and added my own spin. It was a 3 wheels tensioner rear boggie setup. Where i turn it to a 4 wheel setup. Been thinking about chrome paint for awhile. Didn't know how it would turn out.
Did you paint the bearing in the arm? I bet all your cars and toys has a nice coat of over spray to them now......
baja nope. Only the floor beneathe the arm and frame. Lesson already learned! its called process of living and learning man. The bearing i covered inside of rollers with tape. Outer race not fully taped which doesnt matter as long as grease and rollers are ok.
Any other questions?
You’re also throwing a base coat on everything within 10 feet......😆
Nice
Well if you ever get one of the two cars it's in the garage next to you painting and you go to turn the windshield wipers on it sounds like sandpaper you know what I'm talking about.
baja LOL i gotcha, at least windshields are easy to remove paint from. Body panels not so much
Quick question, can you see your face clearly in it? If not then i suspect that it's not a true chrome effect at all
But yeah, I'm with a lot of people who have left a comment, cut to the chase man, we can see lots of lovely vehicles any day of the week, but this review is on the paint effect, not other cars
And yeah, the no touch doesn't exactly ring true with vehicle modders or vehicles, because you're adjusting, loosening and tightening all the time dude, so useless
At least you re-reviewed it and was honest dude 👍
Dude the video is over 3 years old man like elsa LET IT GOOOOOOOO 👍
@@A_Pt_9298 lmaooooo you made him delete his comments
Spray can chrome? Looks nice until it starts chipping. Save some scratch and send it to the chrome shop!
Agreed!!! 😅🤙👊
I would have used MAX2K two part clear.
i tried rustolem gloss alum i was amazed my buddy had to put a magnet on a pulley to prove it wasnt alum next to alum pulleys that i wasted my money on
Yea it just sucks that it wears down do easily 🤙👊 thats killer though
Get to the point
that’s probably the closest you’ll get to chrome with spray paint. looks sick
Rustoleum "chrome" is crap. Like all enamels, it does not hold it's finish, unless you put it in a glass case.
Robert Pierson try sanding between coats
Rustoleum paints are generally strong. The silver, chrome, aluminum versions suck for some reason.
It chemical reactions. It happened to me on Michigan state quad i did. Its hard to paint with can anf tape off certain sections with the small window. I let mine dry for 2 days and still had that reaction.
Yea rustoleum is very finicky like that man
What is the exact spray that you used? I assume that it is for exterior also?
I watched this video, decided to do my swingarm, looked great but never cured right. Its was not very durable at all for a swingarm so I sandblasted it off and went with regular silver. Maybe it would be ok with a automotive clear in a spray gun so its thick enough.
Yea the curing was definetely a huge issue! Alot of people in the comments give advice on curing with baking it and what not
Should have painted it gloss black the overlaid the metallic untill you get that chrome look.
Duke Tugo yes good point!
Hi mate do you have a link for this bright chrome spray i cant seem to find it in the uk 🇬🇧 great video
Thank you! Here is an amazon link, i think they ship world wide 👊 🤙
www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-7718830-7718-830-Automotive-Accessories/dp/B000Z8DGXK/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=rustoleum+chrome+spray+paint&qid=1616978389&sprefix=rustoleum+chrome&sr=8-5
Eso para nada es acabado "espejo", más bien es color aluminio pulido. Tal vez si aplicara una base negro brillante pudiera ser que, obtuviera in poco más de brillo.
Every single stage metallic spray paint will dull over time because the metallic powder in them gets dirty and contaminated with the binder. Once that happens you can't fix it. Clearing will dull the finish, but maybe not as dull as it would had you not cleared it. Catch 22.
LOL def a catch 22. Ive been trying to find a way for years to make it better 😢
I literally don't trust rustoleum or krylon
Why don't DIYers mask up? Overspray on everything
did any of you know that there is really only 3 major companies that make paint in this country the others get theirs from one of the big 3
I was unaware man great info!

Can it Rustoleum Chrome paint be used on brake calipers
Spray the chrome on top of the clear coat?
You should have used a Rust Oleum clear if they have one. Not good to mix manufactures. Also maybe try some heat to bake the paint. That might cure your durability problems. Clear coat basically just gives a base coat paint a glossy surface. There was no need to clear the metallic paint as rust Oleum themselves said not to clear coat it. It probably just needs a proper drying time or to be baked on.
RedWhiteAndBlueVideo im not sure you watched the whole video but i did use rustoleum clear on the green frame and it made it flake and krinkle.
However baking sounds like a feasible solution that may work i hadnt thought of that.
One other thing on the back of the chrome can it says do not clear so finding a clear that works well with it is next to impossible. I have searched forums online and could not find anything that works well with rustoleum chrome.
Stupid Fast
In the case of not having a compatible clear I would just not clear and bake
I had the crinkle issue not with the clear coat but using another colour. The advice I got was that I didn't let the paint completely dry. So now I wait a full week before adding. I don't know if that is the issue you had but just a thought.
OH sorry one more thing I had painted a goalie mask with the chrome paint and even after 3 months you still couldn't touch it without it coming off on your hands and dulling it.
Neale Henry your the second person to say that. I tried 72 hours but it didnt work. I will def give 7 days a try next
Who is the music 3:00 into this tutorial?... Anybody
Couldn't you 'seal' the chrome paint with a couple coats of paste wax??
John Durham its worth a shot? I havent tried it but how long does it last? If touching it wears the coat down then waxong may too. Ive got a few things to try with cure times and temperature yet
I have thought about baking the paint. To try getting g it to not rub off. I haven't bothered with it again.
Would it be heat resistant enough for headlight housing? How bad did the clear coat ruin the shine
I have no idea lol and pretty bad
What's up with the Chevelle and fox body?
Let it cure for a good couple of weeks before you try to handle it. No clear coat needed.
Gotcha
RustOleum takes forever to dry sometimes still slightly tacky/soft after 24 hours.
That's why I avoid it whenever I can.
Krylon is dry in ten minutes.
Norman Bates agreed, i used to be a big fan of rustoleum but trying to clearcoat it becomes a nightmare. Its always flaking and destroying the finish. And withiut the clear its not enough tough ess to avoid scratches etc so its like why wouldnt they design a specific clear for it?
spaz stix is the best chrome paint out there ,,, you can get it on ebay and it is worth it ,,, truly it looks the besy of all the chrome paint buddy try it next time ,, ok ?
lesterclaypool1 i will give that a try, is there a clear coat for it or is the basecoat work well for a finish without clear?
VHT Plate Finish comes in at a close 2nd, Spaz Stix is just a total bitch to find sometimes since that particular paint doesn't seem to be produced anymore.
Bobby Bologna im going to take your advice on the vht
Chrome in a spray can? Now thats` Funny. it will never happen.

i painted my fram on my ironhead chrome with this and it still looks good a year later .I didn't clear it with anything tho..way cheaper then a chrome shop
Jacon Lang it looks great but how is it holding up to you touching and rubbing it with your legs etc?
@@StupidFastJohn been a year and is ok ..it looks like chrome cause i sprayed it in thin coats so for 8 bucks a can ..i can't complain ..it helps other things I painted on the bike stick out better ..but clear coat may help it to be more tolerant for the grease and oil

Ahn, you win some you loose some
I had that "crinkle" bulls*** happen to me when I tried to paint my first car with Rustoleum. Basically, it's not necessarily the brand, as much as it is that the new paint is acting like paint stripper to the existing paint. Spray paint has a solvent-based carrier, and that's what happens when you apply solvent to wet paint... it removes it. I actually emailed Rustoleum, REALLY PISSED because this happened. I ended up blowing off the whole situation, however, I later realized what had happened. My paint job got splotchy because I painted in direct sunlight and therefor I couldn't keep it as wet as I needed to get an even top coat. Basically, it didn't have time to self-level before it flashed. Anyway, I decided to fix it by lightly sanding and then recoating... easy right?? Hell no. Thank god I only tested on my hood. Even though I waited the full 48 hours the can recommends, IT STILL SPIDERED! (This is what I sent the nasty-gram to Rustoleum about) Even after the 48 hours, the paint had not cured ALL THE WAY THRU. If I had not sanded it, it would have worked fine. But sanding it sort of "opened up a scab" and exposed non-cured paint. The moral of the story is this: You have to recoat (or clear coat) within the amount of time given on the can. If you miss the window, you are applying solvent to dry-to-the-touch but not-yet-fully-cured paint and you are risking "removing" the existing coat. So either get it done within the specified window, or wait for the full cure time before messing with it. And per my hard-learned lesson, don't necessarily trust the cure time on the can, especially if you intend to sand it at all before recoating. Knowing what I know now, if I was gonna sand and recoat spray paint, I'd wait a MINIMUM of a week before doing so. Or if possible, wait the cure time, sand it, and wait the cure time again and paint it. That way the freshly opened "wound" would have time to cure as well. After a LOT of practice, I can actually rattle-can an ENTIRE CAR with Rustoleum, and it looks fantastic. The car I'm driving right now has a Metallic Gold paint job and people SHIT when I tell them it's Walmart rattle cans...
John Moore thank you for taking the time to write that all out! I have heard alot of horror stories based off of the actual cure time like you are talking about. Im thinking about doing a video painting my turbo mustang and i greatly appreciate your input because i will heed your advice thoroughly!
Thank you!!!
If you're doing a color change anyway, may I recommend Rustoleum Metallic Cobalt Blue... I have that on a fender on my "practice canvas" in my front yard. Put down that blue and a couple coats of gloss clear, followed by 800-mini-blocked with a light touch, then 1500, 3000, 5000, and then machine compund and polish and OMFG! it comes out the most brilliant metallic blue, almost a candy finish. Try it on something you got layin around! If you paint a car with that combo, it'd be mind blowing, AND as a bonus you get to watch people shit bricks when you tell them it's Walmart rattle cans!
John Moore keep an eye out for the video!!! Lol sounds amazing now im excited lol
Any joy baking it? That dry powder transfer might be helped with an infra red heat lamp.
Good idea! Havent tried it but might 👊🤙
Rustoleum paints are quite good, except for those chrome like ones. Finish is never like the cap, and looks dull. takes for ever for it to dry.
Couldnt agree more!
24 hr dry time, 72 hr. cure time, for rustoleum, it's just an oil based enamel. Not suitable for automotive at all. Urethane clear on top would help its durability a lot.
i never thought of that! great idea & i agree however alot of people using them for automotive for years though
Clear coat turn mine a very gray looking color
You buy stuff on E-bay, and then chrome it with a spray can????????? Comical, just sayin'

does the rustoleum finish harden up over time to the point that you can touch it without it being sticky or getting dull ? Please advise thanks
Yea it gets hard eventually after a few days but still dulls when rubbed! 🤙👊
@@StupidFastJohn wow that sucks. I experimented with this stuff and did not read the instructions. 3 days after spraying it it was hard enough so that I could touch it without damage but then tried clear coat on it and it messed it up! going a different route lol
I have used it and let it sit in the direct sunlight and afterward I was able to handle it without any issues all I can say is you must not have let it completely cure between coats
You might be right although others have had similar complaints. I might give it a second go yet
@@StupidFastJohn Temperature and humidity especially can dramatically effect the cure time.
