- 2023 Topps Dynasty is a baseball product, and every base card is a baseball player except for one, Victor Wembanyama! In this video we break down the recent 20k sale of this Wembanyama auto patch card and discuss if we like or dislike having this basketball player in a baseball card product. We also discuss our favorite recent pickups alongside our favorite short prints of all time!

This episode becomes even more interesting with this morning's (4.30.24) announcement from Topps that they will be releasing multiple basketball sets this summer all with Victor Wembanyama autos and even RPAs.

Definitely! Non-licensed cards are pretty divisive, are you interested in Topps Chrome basketball with no team names or logos?
I too am a Stadium Club collector. Their images are just amazing. Also I collect image variations too.

pretty intresting that wemby prizm cards seem to demand so much more than any of the fanatics sets with him, the black shimmer 1/1 does 500k but a /10 first pitch jersey on card auto only does 20k. guess pro licensed product is still king

This is why the hobby is no longer about substance. It's becone sadly about gimmicks. From Tacofactor to Brady photoshopped images to Wemby baseball cards 😂, it just never stops
Chris here - what I like to do is completely avoid these gimmicks and see what might be getting ignored that shouldn’t.
This wemby situation is weird though.

Do you guys get any “Shaq” vibes for sport card burn out? I’m 48, and recall the shaq blowup to the hobby well. Obviously not baseball, but when Shaq enters the league his popularity poured into all areas of collecting. A lot of non collectors, cashing in. There was a huge push to get SO much product out. Wemby mania is insane, his potential value is already baked into the price. Huge bubble coming, and like Shaq, it won’t matter how dominant wemby could be.
“Ok” heritage video. The centering on this set is going to be huge, for true mint cards. The backs are tough.

Chris here - I remember very well the 1991 Classic Shaq card! Dunking in his LSU garb. That card was EVERYWHERE!

The market indicators are very similar to Shaq, and what that brought about for collecting in general….except for 1 massive variable that doesn’t compare to contemporary objects. Wemby is HUGE in Asian markets. Predictive models are tough with new, foreign markets. Look at the upstart RUclips Asian channels doing breaks, just to film a wemby reveal. The profit potential in all sports for “shredders”, in markets that have billions of people might not be fully realized or understood. Anyways, interesting topic.

Do y’all think blue refractors are the next best thing after gold? I was looking at Austin Riley’s topps chrome update cards. His situation seems similar to Soto where his flagship image is in Chrome Update and not Chrome. Hard to imagine his prices ever coming remotely close to Soto’s, but he does seem undervalued. I was thinking about picking up the Blue and Xfractor. Not trying to dump money into an Orange or gold for Riley. If his horizontal SSP surfaced more, I’d settle on it. Any thoughts?
Chris here - I do love that horizontal SSP.
Riley’s chrome update refractors are great cards - and yes I agree he’s undervalued but that doesn’t mean his stuff is due to jump! (I’ve learned that the hard way)
But ok, yeah I like the update blue refractor. Color is nice and bold and it has the flagship image. Nice card. Probably better buy than the green.
One thing to note - if you’re looking at his topps chrome rookie autos, stay away From the update autos. Stickers are no good.

@@SpitballinCards I will so far I pulled the trigger on a blue. I think I’m going to find an xfractor and maybe a green as a hedge. I completely agree that just because he’s undervalued, doesn’t mean he’s a good buy. I think for a lot of people he just doesn’t move the needle.

What cards of Paul Goldschmitt are more valueable then his Red Refractor Auto /5 bowman chrome 1st?, I Feel the Red Refractor Auto /5 1st is a players 2nd best card. imo.

Just a way to grab some attention. No way would I ever pay that much, even if I had millions in disposable income. Was this Topps only way to get him on a card/autographed?
Yes! He signed an exclusive auto deal with fanatics. Panini has the licenses but won’t have his autos. So
No autos for him in NBA sets until like 2026.
Weird time for some of these players and cards.

If fake cards are discovered in their slabs, PSA will buy them back at market value (if the real card). That guarantee is only offered by PSA.
Chris here, that guarantee is nice piece of mind to have.
It’s sick that the jersey was an ebbets field flannels New York black Yankees jersey though. Ebbets is an awesome company.
