It’s nice to hear someone speak favorably about The Last Jedi. I hear so much hate for that movie, but ever since I saw it, I was thrilled to see how Rian Johnson was so willing to expand on the lore and themes of Star Wars. I especially loved that he explored the force as something that belonged to everyone, not just the Jedi. The Last Jedi called into question the light/dark dichotomy, and it made the sequels feel thematically connected to Anakin’s journey in the prequels. In my view, The Last Jedi gave the sequels a reason to exist, and even helped to improve the world of Star Wars overall. I was pretty bummed when Rise of Skywalker seemed so intent on undoing everything The Last Jedi did; it made the previous two movies feel less meaningful in retrospect. I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on the Kenobi series, or anything else related to Star Wars.

I remember my high school teacher and I argued for an hour about the rankings of the films because he had the Last Jedi as his number 1 overall and I was lukewarm on it (no pun intended). I used to think about our argument a lot and how wrong he was until I recently rewatched it and was blown away. Rian Johnson is an expert at not giving the audience what they want and, in doing so, getting them to question their inherent biases and expectations (e.g. what is supposed to happen in a Star Wars film). He was criticized for disrespecting the Star Wars saga but I can’t think of any more respectful way to engage with media than to put the amount of research and thought into past Star Wars movies that Johnson obviously did and help the story to evolve (rather than just remake like TFA). Additionally, there are fascinating echoes of Hamlet in Kylo Ren’s story and the film overall that emphasize being haunted by and indebted to the past (as Johnson was by Lucas’s legacy) and the double edged sword of revenge.
Vader only let Obi Wan go because he was critically dissatisfied with his desired revenge. He was confused by this and decided to give Kenobi another chance to give him the real battle he craved
I trust the storytelling process! We’ve been waiting for this show for a long long long long long time. My favorite scene so far is Uncle Owen confronting Obi-Wan.
I loved the series so far! One of the things I love too is that it is already tying up so many loose ends/answering questions! Spoilers ahead: "How did obi wan and leia meet?" "How did obi wan react to anakin/vader being alive?" "If and how was the contact between owen and obi wan" and more :)
Sorry to double comment but I am also curious if you’ve read the Star Wars ring theory by Mike Klimk. I just checked it out and found it fascinating. I used to have very little respect for the prequels but that theory opens them up in fascinating ways. Despite being dismissed by many, I think it’s a really worthwhile theory to consider.
Star wars is actually about taking money from fans. The prequels are an embarrassment, and the sequels are just a complete failure. The shows now are mixed but the whole endeavor seems creatively bankrupt to me. I regret caring about the art from the first two and a half movies. I have mostly been insulted by everything that has come out since. And if you are not moved by the cock crowing over the field of Pellenor, then you are not qualified talking about LOTR to me.
