My original Hilleberg Nallo two is over 25 years old, I have used it on more hundreds of nights than I can possibly remember, but best guess is at least 500, possibly 6 or 700. It cost nearly £400 in the mid 90s, but that’s still any works out at 50 or 60p a night! And it is still a really strong tent. Even after all that use, and UV, I bet the fabric is still stronger than that of many new, super-lightweight tents. Which is to miss the point - I have super-lightweight tents, which I use sparingly as I know they will wear more quickly than bombproof shelters like Hilleberg’s. And with cheaper, and/or lighter tents, at what point do they become unsafe to use in the wilder places? Ie when do the fabrics and suspension and other stress points become so weak and with wear and tear that they might easily fail if an unpredicted gale springs up, as they do often enough in my neck of the woods...? That is all part of a balancing act! And am I prepared to pay £500 for the best quality of ultralight tent, when for a little bit more I can have a tent which weighs a few hundred grams more, but might last me a lifetime? No! In my 60s I need to keep the weight of my pack seriously down, but there are some things I’m not prepared to compromise on, namely, super strong tent, more than adequate sleeping bag, properly comfortable sleep mat, including an appropriate rating for winter use. I was quite cold a couple of autumns ago, when I used my thermarest Xlite instead of the Xtherm. The quote I was using was more than adequate, but I spent the night shivering from the floor upwards! Had I been using a tent that was marginal for the strong wind blew all night, that would be a second thing to fret about. And I am all about the comfort these days! One irony is that although my gear is half the weight it was only 25 years ago, I have had to start increasing the weight of some things in order that I have the comfort and confidence I want, with a body that is ageing, arthritis making me much weaker than I used to be. And extra food I need to carry in case I am too poorly to move on when I plan to, and have to spend an extra night out. These are all the kind of buggerations you youngsters out there have not even begun to think about yet! Nor should you. I certainly didn’t in my 30s. Everything in its own time, children (-;)~
That is amazing that your tent has lasted that long and you have used it that much. It really is a balancing act when it comes to weight, I mean I don't want to have 20kg on my back for days on end mile after mile but at the same time I do want equipment that works and will last. I still use my Saunders tent from the mid 90's and it has been used for months on end cycling across continents. Half these tents these days are shot after a bad storm if they survive it and the materials are more a less landfill after 5 years. My Hilleberg is a youngster at only 12 years old !
I'm young still (less than 70) and I agree completely. Some things are worth the weight; healthy food, quality tent, and a colder than forecasted sleeping system (bag and pad) are going to be with me for my health and safety.
Brilliant review, well done. I own two Hilleberg tents, both 4-5 years old so purchased before Hilleberg jacked up their prices. The quality is good but I have the impression, as a company, Hilleberg has become fat, lazy and arrogant. But that's going to happen to any company when you know people will always buy your stuff regardless of price. It's a shame there isn't a closer competitor in terms of build quality. That said, most people really don't need a tent that can withstand 50+ mph winds, so save your money and go for the very good cheaper options available. I won't be buying another Hilleberg until their prices return to a more sane level.
Yh your right the prices have gone through the roof, it is mad at some of the prices these days. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be selling them second hand soon once they can go on holiday over seas again and less people will be camping. 🤞 I will be able to pick a cheap one up haha. i have a Wechsel pioneer unlimited wich has a super quality fabric, who is four season, 150 gr lighter and waterproof. (15000 mm ) floor (half price;-) I have no experience with the Hilleberg yet. but a friend of mine did got Allak 2 a few weeks ago so perfect possibilty to compare. in a few weeks we will set them up at the same time and find out what the differences are between them two. I think the Wechsel needs less time to build up. I think;-)
Had a 3 season Wild Country Tent flattend in a 80mph forcast storm, got hillebergs ever since then , 8 of them. Price is your main citeria, safety is mine , plus will potentially save money as wont have to repair damage tents or replace tents due to bad weather or UV degredation. Seam sealing and reproofing is also a hassle I can do without.
I have wrestled with the idea of getting the allak 2. but I can't justify the price . So I got the cloud peak 2 and enjoyed the tent in the rain and wind. great review and the love your honesty.

This was a really well done review, mate! Keeping it all real and grounded. Yeah, if the Naturehike is a Ford, I'd say the Hilleberg is closer to a Lamborghini - they both get you A to B, but the Lamborghini requires a race track to actually be used for what it was made. I mean, the quality is just truly amazing, but that kind of expedition style tent is only "correctly dimensioned" for a few numbers of situations. Instead, I'd choose the Naturehike and have the remaining £965 to spend on food and such for my adventures.
Strange analogy. The Hilleberg do not need a race track, you can use it anywhere and in any conditions. The problem in the wild is that you do not set the parameters for what quality you need from your tent, nature does. Perhaps a better analogy would be if you think you need safety belts or not in your Ford.
@@LLiivveeeevviiLL Of course a Hilleberg performs just as good as any other tent in the "normal" camping scenarios. But in order to excel, it needs to be put in the conditions it was made to withstand - if you never camp in harsch conditions, it might be just an unneccessarily expensive tent you're using. Like I said; if you never use it on the race track, you might not need a car that can race.
Have to say, I've always bought the best that my pocket allows, I go by the "you buy cheap, you buy twice" saying and over the years that's worked just fine for me, however, I might have to change my views for this one.! I've been looking for a good quality, good make, solid 4 season two man tent, so the obvious choice was the Hilleberg Allak 2 but as always I do plenty or research and the more I did the less I actually wanted one. The main reason is the fact that they've hiked the prices to what only amounts as total greed and frankly most people can't afford the whopping £1,280.00 price tag (Inc footprint) Then there's the weight 3.7kg (not including the footprint) For me I wouldnt use it enough to justify this cost & the extra weight. I bought a BIG Agnes Copper Spur 2 for my main wild camping and going to look for an alternative to the Hilleberg.
Yh the price and the weight are the biggest draw backs with this tent ⛺ If you are doing a big winter hike that isn't to fear it is perfect but for most thru hikes it is too heavy and over kill. If you split the weight with someone else that could work as it is a two person tent. However if you are like me I like my space. Nice and honest review, I enjoyed it. For my journeys I rely on a Hilleberg Unna tent. Although I have to admit it is impressive what that Naturehike tent offers for its money, I think the real difference will get dramaticly obvious in bad weather. Heavy and prolonged rains, intense winds and snowy conditions: there is were things really start to matter.

Great comparison and the naturehike wins hands down for me. While the quality of materials and overall finish of the hilleberg is superior, there's no way on earth that the hilleberg is worth that money, not bothered what anyone says. Plus, it's heavy to carry for a winter wild camp which isn't great. My final point is that I feel there is some snobbery or competition from other wild campers, who think if they have a hilleberg tent, an arctryx £850 jacket, a Rab £700 sleeping bag and a couple of pairs of Fjallraven trousers, that they are the real wild campers and everyone else isn't, which for me isn't what wild camping is about. While there's no doubt it's a great, well made tent, the reality is that the naturehike will do the same job for a fraction of the price. Thanks for the review. 🙂
Yh I think if you want to camp up Ben Nevis in the winter it probably is needed and will do an amazing job but most of the time you could get away with the Naturehike. There is a bit of snobbery but can get there with anything, as you as your happy with your kit that is all that matters. Your right about it being heavy defo would want a lighter tent for the summer. Well I guess you can call it snobbery, but if your life dependent on that your tent keeps it together during a winter storm, I would call it reasonable. Another thing is sustainability. If you buy something that will last a lifetime, and more, you only need to buy it once and the supplier only to make it once and hence use the resources once. I have a Fjällräven jacket that I bought in the -80ties and still use. Is that snobbery compared to buy new clothes every year?
@@jackass5088 i love my akto, but dodgy hip means i am looking for more room, especially headroom, I think I will try the Naturehike, may-october and use the akto in winter. (I will always have my terra nova bivi to minimise the death thing risk;)
Great vid Rob, I think I am with you on this one...Hilleberg's are the Rolls Royce of tents, my friend has just bought a Hilleberg Unna and you can really see the quality of their tents... but for wild camping in the UK the Cloud Peak 2 is definitely good enough, like you said, the only thing I'd prefer on the Cloud Peak 2 is for the footprint to cover the vestibule area as well...cheers, Luke
As an owner of the CP2 I can confirm it's possible to get one side of the fly flush with the ground, albeit at the cost of raising the other side up higher. If you have wind consistently coming in from one direction that's fine.
Sound, pragmatic review. The Hilliberg is just too expensive for ordinary people on a budget. Others have made simple mods to the Naturehike which resolve many of the issues - pegs; bungee replacement on the roof; stronger guy ropes and new 9mm poles. If that adds up to another £100 you still have a great value tent in the Naturehike.
Yes that is right if the tent is £175 and you spend another £100 so £275 total you are still saving over £800. Yes you can't use the Naturehike in the heart of winter on the summit of Ben Nevis but how often are you going to do that. For 95% of people the Naturehike is the best bet but if you have the money and are going to use it in the depths of winter then you could consider the Hilleberg. @@kaya-sem l don't know is the short answer, but if you search RUclips reviews you should find the answer. Personally the poles supplied have been perfectly fine for my camping in the UK. I see no joy in sitting in a wind battered tent on an exposed mountain wondering if the tent is going to survive the night just to prove it one way or another, as some reviewers seem to do. That doesn't make me a fair weather camper, it just means that I work within the spec of the tent. My only 'mod' is tent pegs. 👍 Happy camping.
Great comparison video Rob. I’m assuming that the Hilleberg tents are really for people who have deep pockets and are going out camping in extreme weathers. I seem to recall that even the great man Paul Messner highly rated the Nature Hike tents and recommended them for the vast majority of camps outside of the worst winter weather.

Not sure Paul Messner really hikes ‘off piste’ - more within view of a car park 😂. One good thing about Hillebergs is that you can usually sell them for at least 50% of the new price, and sometimes more.

If your comparing fair weather camp sites not 2 windy cheaper tent all day long I have a msr elexir 3 and one stormy severe night Dartmoor almost folded in 2 why I have allak now which I’ve used helvellyn snowdonia and Dartmoor severe weather red tarn ect no problem whatsoever always feel safe wouldn’t in the cheaper tents but great review I would definitely consider for 3 season use not 4 for the price absolute bargain materials not as good but for that price what do u expect
Very good comparison !!!! I am from Argentina and I usually trek and mountain through the Andes mountain range. Normally there are nights with strong winds and temperatures of below zero degrees Celsius. A standard is -0 to -5 degrees Celsius, although my record is -22C. at 4500 meters above sea level. I have gear and bag for those temperatures. My question would be whether the Naturehike would withstand these situations. The coat is secondary, the important thing is the resistance. From already thank you very much!!!!
Wow I bet it is amazing scenery and hikes around there! I have slept in -5 and was sound but think that is because I have a good sleeping bag and pad. The main problem would be the wind. It is fine upto 30mph but after that I would start to get worried. I have heard people use them in 45mph winds but I don't know if I would trust it. Your right if you are spending a lot of time in those conditions you can't really think about the money as safety is a big priority, however I think they could sell it for £700/£800 and still be making a very good profit. Really good review, makjng clear all the differences where others just say "oh, the Naturehike is a copy of the Hilleberg". Think I land in the same place as you, all the differences you highlight are really signs of the superb quality of the Hilleberg, but I just couldn't justify the price premium.

The weight of the Hilleberg basically stops it being a backpacking tent. They look similar but are not really comparable. If I had to choose it would be the Naturehike. Can't imagine ever wanting to carry the other one.

Agree, very expensive. The price of H.footprint almost is a cost of your tent. Unbelievable. I bought Hilleberg Staika similar to Allak on used market. Was worrying paying bit above half price of RRP, that was before prices went up. Never regret my purchase. I use my Staika a lot, it paid of in terms of money and emotions, places I’ve been to.
very fair review. value decision (use vs money) - do you camp in winter or predominantly summer? how much are you prepared to carry (weight wise) BUT, the NH is not a 4 season tent... so in a way it's apples and oranges - but its still great to see these kind of comparisons. nice one :)
Yh your right it isn't a 4 season tent but for some reason they advertise it as a 4 season tent that is why I really wanted to show why it isn't a true 4 season tent but tbh as long as it isn't snowing you will be ok in the winter providing you have a good sleeping bag and a good ground mat. Tbh I have even seen people camp in the NH tent in the snow but snow did come in under the sides as you would expect. Just depends on what you are happy with. The Cloud Peak 2 is a budget tent, wouldnt trust it in a storm, summer or winter. But the majority of my trips avoid the weather so this has dine well for me. If I feel something is brewing I use my Terra Nova. I still see lots of chat about 3 season this, 4 season that. What make a tent 4 season is a snow skirt and poles than can hold the wieght of overnight snow before you get out of your bag. Cloud Peak 2 too light for that, my Terra Nova is borderline. The Hilleberg is what you get for what you pay but difficult to justify the price for the Lakes or Dartmoor. If I did the Alpine pass route again, in summer, I would take the Cloud Peak

at the end of the day, youre really paying for wind resistance in the hilleberg, the naturehike will stand up to most things the hilleberg will with the exception of high winds.

Think weight is a big thing too, the Naturehike in my opinion is top weight for backpacking but the Hilliberg is not really a backpacking tent but mainly for weekenders and wild campers - still prefer my 1.2 kg tent but like you looking for maybe to buy a couple of others for different trips but nice review - Thanks

I also have the Naturehike Cloud Peak 2 and agree that it's not a 4 season tent, but I don't have any plans to camp in snow. Personally I think that there are a few advantages to the hillaberg, but nothing like the cost differential. I paid £135 for my Cloud Peak 2 last year which is 1/8th of the cost of the Hillaberg and some of the issues with my tent can easily and cheaply be fixed, even changing the poles for 9mm diameter. I agree that it would be better if the groundsheet covered the vestibule, but a piece of Tyvec does the job for me and weights very little. I think that many of those who buy the Hillaberg will never use it in the extreme conditions it is designed for and could be simply bowing to the marketing hype.
Great comparison thank you. Nevermind what is out there whether its tents clothing or anything retail , some people just have to have the dearest to feed their ego. Hilleberg executives must be having a right laugh at staff meetings wondering how high they can go before sales drop off. I once worked at a factory where the workers would always put kwiksave food into a M&S bag to carry around the place to make it look like thats where their wives went shopping because it was expensive and super quality. ( Similiar I think.) Pigs arse they did.
Yh once you get to a certain price bracket it becomes a status symbol. Yes they are amazing tents but there is definitely some people that look down on others if they don't have a Hilleberg or if anyone says anything bad about them people kick off. @@AnotherDayAnotherWalk Vango used to make higher end tents. I still have and use a couple of my Vango’s that are over 20 years old. Then Vango switched to cheaper tents and Hilleberg put their prices up.
The other, much cheaper tent, is a proper bargain though, and I would use it as a default if I had no other choice, or rather, some choice, but wanted the luxury of space, with a fairly sturdy design. But as you point out, the tapes that clip the fly to the poles look piss poor, and you can see all the places the tent is likely to fail when that time comes. And I wouldn’t want to be in all that collapsing nylon in a force eight gale on the top of a Scottish Munro. That would be the time you wished you had stumped up the cash for that Allak!
Your right there will be a point when it does fail and for someone like you who has done hundreds of camps it will be sooner rather than later but for most people they will only use it in goodish weather a few weekends out the year so it like you say a proper bargain. I would love to know Hillebergs profit margins on there tents as I know the materials are much more expensive but are they taking advantage of the current market? A late reply to your response to my, er, response - Yes, true, if you don't shoot off backpacking every weekend, and for maybe a month of holiday time every year too, the Cloud Peak is, as you agree, a bargain. All the 'If only they'd done this, and made that better' is precisely the point, that's how they make them for that price. On the Hilleberg price point - all their tents are cheaper in the States. How do they do that?! Do they make them there, with cheaper labour somehow? Or is it that people in the US just won't stump up the kind of cash that the European market seems prepared to? But as I have pointed out elsewhere, what you pay for isn't always obvious. Sheer design wins cash prizes - all Hillebergs are easy to pitch for starters, something worth remembering when the weather is rough! I was reminded of this just three nights ago, on Rannoch Moor, in wet and very windy conditions. I took an Exped Orion 2, because it is a 3 pole geodesic, which when pitched hardly moves. Great for a quite-ish night, no flapping fabric, very firm framework. But it is a swine to pitch! And if you move on and use it a second night when the fabrics are wet, getting the very long poles through the pole sleeves - tent fabric on one side or both - which are wet already is a cusser's dream, plenty of opportunity for a swear-off! Expeds are cheaper than Hillies, but the fabrics are good, though the stitching is not of the quality of Hilleberg. You can't have it all in one tent!
Thanks for the compare. Very helpful. Imitation is the finest form of flattery. As such, many companies have tried to copy the Hilleberg style and quality. Best to go with the original. Helleberg is my favorite. Then, a Terra Nova. Well done. Be well!
a good comparison i think .but for me it comes down to where and when your going to use it .the naturehike wo'nt take the winds like the hille .but if your smart you pitch out of the wind . they are both good tents .but the hille is over priced and very heavy for a wildcamping tent at 3.5 kg .but it is pretty bombproof .? the naturehike is a very cheaper version .and for most folk more than adequate .for me the hille is defo a better tent .but abit over kill if your not into winter camping ? atb kev
I think the weight is worth it for the winter but not the summer. If you didn't take the ground mat it would be 3.3kg. Not sure you could make it much lighter maybe down to 3kg if you didn't use all the pegs and ropes. Think you can buy a summer inner for it but is an extra £250.
a great new vid along these lines would be to see if the cloud peak inner fits in the hille... it would be a lighter and cooler option for hille owners...and considering those guys payy £115 for a footprint ..sure theyd buy a cloud p2 for a spare summer inner tent ????
I own two hilleberg tents they r amazing and worth every dollar and saving up for. The investment will keep u safe and secure and last a lifetime. Ull pass them down. Don't go cheap yull suffer for it and put ur life at risk very easily.

Check out the eureka timberline with vestibule. Its about 180$ to 190$ US one of the best historic tents ever created. Their so strong yet not too heavy. I own one and I use it all the time. I used one for 30 yrs. I'm 42. Their amazing!!! I cudnt suggest a better affordable tent. I still use mine the most for regular fun camping. Its an A frame tent tons of room. 2 to 6 persons versions available. Its been in production since the 1970s. Anyways take care be well and enjoy ur summer!!
As the Cloudpeak is a three season tent a truer comparison test would be with Hilleberg’s Rogen which is the Yellow Label version of the Allak. Still a big price difference of course, but a bit less…

Great comparison mate, I love the hilleberg but the weight makes it a no... Do you know a tent with the same size that would be in-between the 2 in weight and hopefully price? All I can think of is tarp tent scarp 2 but they are never in stock
Thank, Umm I am unsure tbh I wouldn't want to go any heavier than my Naturehike. In price there is loads! MSR do some really good tents but alot of then you have to pitch the inner first then the outer. Or Wild Country helm 1/2/3 are really good tents if you can get hold of one. Really nice review! I'm thinking of buying Allak 2 or Allak 3 but having a reeeally hard time deciding as the Allak 2 would be awesome for 1 but on the edge with 2 and no floorspace, and the opposite for the Allak 3. Whats your thoughts, is the 2 large enough for 2 grown ups?
It would be a very snug fit for two adults and like you say there wouldn't be mush space inside for your things. If you are happy putting your things in the outside space (vestibule) the 2 could work but you would have to be "friendly" But if you want more room I would go for the 3. What is the weight difference as if it isn't much I would go for the bigger one as you can split the weight over 2 peoples bags. ie one takes the tent and the other takes the poles and pegs. had 2 cloud peak 2 tents, both failed me due to cheap zips, sent them back got a refund, scarp 1 kinda guy now, or will be on wednesday when its due to be delivered

Naturehike is a far more practical tent. Lighter and also cooler in summer. Who needs a four season tent - probably less than 1 per cent of backpackers/campers.
I don't think you're evaluating completely correctly. Because there are so many points of view. The size of your monthly salary is essential. Number of expected overnight stays. The environment in which you will sleep. Whether you will carry the tent on your back, attach it to a bicycle, or drive to the sleeping place by car. The number of rainy days at the location is determined. The surface on which you will sleep, the floor, is always sensitive to cuts. Air humidity in places where the tent is used. It can also happen to you that you go to places where people are not as rich as in your country, Hilleberg can then attract thieves. Specifically for me: I bought several tents of different brands. Each for a different use. I like to try new procedures, so it doesn't just happen to me that I sleep in a tent for more than 70 nights. That's why Naturehike is in my hands immortal.

If you were going for 15 days on a glacier on Baffin Island and you were given the choice, you WOULD pay the money, gladly, no questions asked. That's what Hillebergs are about, that's where they start to make sense.
Why would any one want to camp in snow or in a storm? Campings meant to be a bit of fun. Well actually for me, its a means to an end as I do it fish remote lakes. I think people take things too seriously.
You are really comparing apples and oranges. Hilleberg is a true four season tent and the Cloud Peak is a summer tent / camping tent. If you should compare it to a hilleberg you should compare it to a Hilleberg Rogen. Sorry I would never take the Cloud Peak to the Scandinavian mountains 🤣
Yh you can do with some bits like you can buy stronger poles and add some loops to the roof to make it tighter and a few other bits but tbh I think it is fine as it is for 95% of the weather in the UK. I bought the Naturehike for £144 off Ali Express.. excellent tent.. a friend has the soulo I think, which he's selling and then getting the Allak . I'm of the same thinking that I couldn't justify the cost of a Hilleberg to the wife 😂

Hi all the places I have read they are 7.5mm there is a noticeable size difference and if it was only 0.5mm difference don't think you could tell if that makes sense. I will measure tomorrow 👍 Thank you for watching 👍

She doesn’t own me and isn’t my Mum. This has nothing to do with which tent I’d buy.
Because we are a partnership and I would be equally annoyed if she went out and spend over £1000 on something. Unless we have spoken about it and both agreed I wouldn't spend that sort of money as we are not that well off to do so. However if I or my wife have been saving and put a lot of thought into spending that sort of money then yes it is fine but still think out of respect we would have that discussion first. Funny „my wife would kill me if I spent that money on a tent“...well some men seem to be dominated by their wifes....Hilleberg tents are the cheapest you can get when going outdoors trips where you want/need reliable „accommodation“..

Pissed of of idiotic reviews. The main point here is that it depends what are you doing. I suggest you are not going to use Naturehike for very demanding conditions and/or life heavy snow/winter conditions. Nobody buys a Rolls for shopping and nobody buys a Ford to go on race track.
Think you have missed the point. They are both advertised as a 2 person 4 season tent, however their is a big price difference. This is to show you the difference also there are a lot of people with Hilleberg tents that use them for a summer nights and tbh most weather's in this country (UK) and it is over kill. There is 1000$ cameras and 5000$ and the difference is not the image quality but speed etc depends of the aplicaition. Yes there are idiots with 10.000$ cameras shooting their kids but this is their problem. My point is that the more expensive product provide greater safety, experience, protection etc etc etc subject to weather conditions etc etc. Sure nobody go in expedition with 100$ tent. As i say nobody go with Ford on race track. So the missed point is yours. You can not review a product without speaking of what type of scenarios can be used or not. Of course summer time i can go without tent i guess so what? Both tents are crap because i can go with no tent?
Right I did look at every part and show that it was stronger as well as showing that snow would come in under the naturehike sides. Now if you can't infer that this would therefore hold up in stronger winds and be better in snow maybe I will take your feedback on board for the next test. Sorry but again the cars on a race track doesn't really work but like I said I understand what you are trying to say.

My original Hilleberg Nallo two is over 25 years old, I have used it on more hundreds of nights than I can possibly remember, but best guess is at least 500, possibly 6 or 700. It cost nearly £400 in the mid 90s, but that’s still any works out at 50 or 60p a night! And it is still a really strong tent. Even after all that use, and UV, I bet the fabric is still stronger than that of many new, super-lightweight tents. Which is to miss the point - I have super-lightweight tents, which I use sparingly as I know they will wear more quickly than bombproof shelters like Hilleberg’s. And with cheaper, and/or lighter tents, at what point do they become unsafe to use in the wilder places? Ie when do the fabrics and suspension and other stress points become so weak and with wear and tear that they might easily fail if an unpredicted gale springs up, as they do often enough in my neck of the woods...? That is all part of a balancing act! And am I prepared to pay £500 for the best quality of ultralight tent, when for a little bit more I can have a tent which weighs a few hundred grams more, but might last me a lifetime? No! In my 60s I need to keep the weight of my pack seriously down, but there are some things I’m not prepared to compromise on, namely, super strong tent, more than adequate sleeping bag, properly comfortable sleep mat, including an appropriate rating for winter use. I was quite cold a couple of autumns ago, when I used my thermarest Xlite instead of the Xtherm. The quote I was using was more than adequate, but I spent the night shivering from the floor upwards! Had I been using a tent that was marginal for the strong wind blew all night, that would be a second thing to fret about. And I am all about the comfort these days! One irony is that although my gear is half the weight it was only 25 years ago, I have had to start increasing the weight of some things in order that I have the comfort and confidence I want, with a body that is ageing, arthritis making me much weaker than I used to be. And extra food I need to carry in case I am too poorly to move on when I plan to, and have to spend an extra night out. These are all the kind of buggerations you youngsters out there have not even begun to think about yet! Nor should you. I certainly didn’t in my 30s. Everything in its own time, children (-;)~
That is amazing that your tent has lasted that long and you have used it that much. It really is a balancing act when it comes to weight, I mean I don't want to have 20kg on my back for days on end mile after mile but at the same time I do want equipment that works and will last. Plus I do like my little comforts.

I still use my Saunders tent from the mid 90's and it has been used for months on end cycling across continents. Half these tents these days are shot after a bad storm if they survive it and the materials are more a less landfill after 5 years. My Hilleberg is a youngster at only 12 years old !
I'm young still (less than 70) and I agree completely. Some things are worth the weight; healthy food, quality tent, and a colder than forecasted sleeping system (bag and pad) are going to be with me for my health and safety.
Good comments, I could afford the expensive one, but tbh, unless I was going up the Himalayas I would choose the Naturehike

Brilliant review, well done. I own two Hilleberg tents, both 4-5 years old so purchased before Hilleberg jacked up their prices. The quality is good but I have the impression, as a company, Hilleberg has become fat, lazy and arrogant. But that's going to happen to any company when you know people will always buy your stuff regardless of price. It's a shame there isn't a closer competitor in terms of build quality. That said, most people really don't need a tent that can withstand 50+ mph winds, so save your money and go for the very good cheaper options available. I won't be buying another Hilleberg until their prices return to a more sane level.
Yh your right the prices have gone through the roof, it is mad at some of the prices these days. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be selling them second hand soon once they can go on holiday over seas again and less people will be camping. 🤞 I will be able to pick a cheap one up haha.

i decided to boycott hilleberg for those exact reasons, went to tarptent, got a scarp 1 being delivered on wednesday
i have a Wechsel pioneer unlimited wich has a super quality fabric, who is four season, 150 gr lighter and waterproof. (15000 mm ) floor (half price;-) I have no experience with the Hilleberg yet. but a friend of mine did got Allak 2 a few weeks ago so perfect possibilty to compare. in a few weeks we will set them up at the same time and find out what the differences are between them two. I think the Wechsel needs less time to build up. I think;-)

Had a 3 season Wild Country Tent flattend in a 80mph forcast storm, got hillebergs ever since then , 8 of them.
Price is your main citeria, safety is mine , plus will potentially save money as wont have to repair damage tents or replace tents due to bad weather or UV degredation. Seam sealing and reproofing is also a hassle I can do without.
You pitched a budget tent when you knew hurricane force winds were incoming? Safety doesn't seem to your main criteria from where I'm sitting. 🤔
I have wrestled with the idea of getting the allak 2. but I can't justify the price . So I got the cloud peak 2 and enjoyed the tent in the rain and wind. great review and the love your honesty.

Yeah, if the Naturehike is a Ford, I'd say the Hilleberg is closer to a Lamborghini - they both get you A to B, but the Lamborghini requires a race track to actually be used for what it was made. I mean, the quality is just truly amazing, but that kind of expedition style tent is only "correctly dimensioned" for a few numbers of situations. Instead, I'd choose the Naturehike and have the remaining £965 to spend on food and such for my adventures.

Strange analogy. The Hilleberg do not need a race track, you can use it anywhere and in any conditions. The problem in the wild is that you do not set the parameters for what quality you need from your tent, nature does. Perhaps a better analogy would be if you think you need safety belts or not in your Ford.
@@LLiivveeeevviiLL Of course a Hilleberg performs just as good as any other tent in the "normal" camping scenarios. But in order to excel, it needs to be put in the conditions it was made to withstand - if you never camp in harsch conditions, it might be just an unneccessarily expensive tent you're using. Like I said; if you never use it on the race track, you might not need a car that can race.
Have to say, I've always bought the best that my pocket allows, I go by the "you buy cheap, you buy twice" saying and over the years that's worked just fine for me, however, I might have to change my views for this one.! I've been looking for a good quality, good make, solid 4 season two man tent, so the obvious choice was the Hilleberg Allak 2 but as always I do plenty or research and the more I did the less I actually wanted one. The main reason is the fact that they've hiked the prices to what only amounts as total greed and frankly most people can't afford the whopping £1,280.00 price tag (Inc footprint) Then there's the weight 3.7kg (not including the footprint)
For me I wouldnt use it enough to justify this cost & the extra weight.
I bought a BIG Agnes Copper Spur 2 for my main wild camping and going to look for an alternative to the Hilleberg.
Yh the price and the weight are the biggest draw backs with this tent ⛺ If you are doing a big winter hike that isn't to fear it is perfect but for most thru hikes it is too heavy and over kill. If you split the weight with someone else that could work as it is a two person tent. However if you are like me I like my space. There are definitely other options that will cost less and be lighter at maybe a cost of not being as strong.

Nice and honest review, I enjoyed it. For my journeys I rely on a Hilleberg Unna tent. Although I have to admit it is impressive what that Naturehike tent offers for its money, I think the real difference will get dramaticly obvious in bad weather. Heavy and prolonged rains, intense winds and snowy conditions: there is were things really start to matter.

Great comparison and the naturehike wins hands down for me. While the quality of materials and overall finish of the hilleberg is superior, there's no way on earth that the hilleberg is worth that money, not bothered what anyone says. Plus, it's heavy to carry for a winter wild camp which isn't great. My final point is that I feel there is some snobbery or competition from other wild campers, who think if they have a hilleberg tent, an arctryx £850 jacket, a Rab £700 sleeping bag and a couple of pairs of Fjallraven trousers, that they are the real wild campers and everyone else isn't, which for me isn't what wild camping is about. While there's no doubt it's a great, well made tent, the reality is that the naturehike will do the same job for a fraction of the price. Thanks for the review. 🙂
Yh I think if you want to camp up Ben Nevis in the winter it probably is needed and will do an amazing job but most of the time you could get away with the Naturehike. There is a bit of snobbery but can get there with anything, as you as your happy with your kit that is all that matters. Your right about it being heavy defo would want a lighter tent for the summer.

Well I guess you can call it snobbery, but if your life dependent on that your tent keeps it together during a winter storm, I would call it reasonable. Another thing is sustainability. If you buy something that will last a lifetime, and more, you only need to buy it once and the supplier only to make it once and hence use the resources once. I have a Fjällräven jacket that I bought in the -80ties and still use. Is that snobbery compared to buy new clothes every year?

Great vid Rob, I think I am with you on this one...Hilleberg's are the Rolls Royce of tents, my friend has just bought a Hilleberg Unna and you can really see the quality of their tents... but for wild camping in the UK the Cloud Peak 2 is definitely good enough, like you said, the only thing I'd prefer on the Cloud Peak 2 is for the footprint to cover the vestibule area as well...cheers, Luke

I'd buy neither. I'm more likely to buy from Terra Nova. Their tents are more than enough. Started with a Helm and upgraded to a pioneer 2.

As an owner of the CP2 I can confirm it's possible to get one side of the fly flush with the ground, albeit at the cost of raising the other side up higher. If you have wind consistently coming in from one direction that's fine.

Sound, pragmatic review. The Hilliberg is just too expensive for ordinary people on a budget. Others have made simple mods to the Naturehike which resolve many of the issues - pegs; bungee replacement on the roof; stronger guy ropes and new 9mm poles. If that adds up to another £100 you still have a great value tent in the Naturehike.
Yes that is right if the tent is £175 and you spend another £100 so £275 total you are still saving over £800. Yes you can't use the Naturehike in the heart of winter on the summit of Ben Nevis but how often are you going to do that. For 95% of people the Naturehike is the best bet but if you have the money and are going to use it in the depths of winter then you could consider the Hilleberg. @@kaya-sem l don't know is the short answer, but if you search RUclips reviews you should find the answer. Personally the poles supplied have been perfectly fine for my camping in the UK. I see no joy in sitting in a wind battered tent on an exposed mountain wondering if the tent is going to survive the night just to prove it one way or another, as some reviewers seem to do.
That doesn't make me a fair weather camper, it just means that I work within the spec of the tent. My only 'mod' is tent pegs. 👍 Happy camping.
Great comparison video Rob. I’m assuming that the Hilleberg tents are really for people who have deep pockets and are going out camping in extreme weathers. I seem to recall that even the great man Paul Messner highly rated the Nature Hike tents and recommended them for the vast majority of camps outside of the worst winter weather.

Not sure Paul Messner really hikes ‘off piste’ - more within view of a car park 😂. One good thing about Hillebergs is that you can usually sell them for at least 50% of the new price, and sometimes more.

If your comparing fair weather camp sites not 2 windy cheaper tent all day long I have a msr elexir 3 and one stormy severe night Dartmoor almost folded in 2 why I have allak now which I’ve used helvellyn snowdonia and Dartmoor severe weather red tarn ect no problem whatsoever always feel safe wouldn’t in the cheaper tents but great review I would definitely consider for 3 season use not 4 for the price absolute bargain materials not as good but for that price what do u expect

I am from Argentina and I usually trek and mountain through the Andes mountain range. Normally there are nights with strong winds and temperatures of below zero degrees Celsius. A standard is -0 to -5 degrees Celsius, although my record is -22C. at 4500 meters above sea level.
I have gear and bag for those temperatures. My question would be whether the Naturehike would withstand these situations. The coat is secondary, the important thing is the resistance.

I have slept in -5 and was sound but think that is because I have a good sleeping bag and pad. The main problem would be the wind. It is fine upto 30mph but after that I would start to get worried. I have heard people use them in 45mph winds but I don't know if I would trust it.
Your right if you are spending a lot of time in those conditions you can't really think about the money as safety is a big priority, however I think they could sell it for £700/£800 and still be making a very good profit.

Think I land in the same place as you, all the differences you highlight are really signs of the superb quality of the Hilleberg, but I just couldn't justify the price premium.

The weight of the Hilleberg basically stops it being a backpacking tent. They look similar but are not really comparable. If I had to choose it would be the Naturehike. Can't imagine ever wanting to carry the other one.

Agree, very expensive. The price of H.footprint almost is a cost of your tent. Unbelievable. I bought Hilleberg Staika similar to Allak on used market. Was worrying paying bit above half price of RRP, that was before prices went up. Never regret my purchase. I use my Staika a lot, it paid of in terms of money and emotions, places I’ve been to.

very fair review. value decision (use vs money) - do you camp in winter or predominantly summer? how much are you prepared to carry (weight wise) BUT, the NH is not a 4 season tent... so in a way it's apples and oranges - but its still great to see these kind of comparisons. nice one :)
Yh your right it isn't a 4 season tent but for some reason they advertise it as a 4 season tent that is why I really wanted to show why it isn't a true 4 season tent but tbh as long as it isn't snowing you will be ok in the winter providing you have a good sleeping bag and a good ground mat. Tbh I have even seen people camp in the NH tent in the snow but snow did come in under the sides as you would expect. Just depends on what you are happy with.

The Allak 2 is worth every PENNY, but I live in Northern Norway so I guess the weather here is a little more harsh than UK.
Yes for places like that it is perfect and will definitely be worth the money and extra weight but only really get bad weather in the UK a couple months out of the year.

The Cloud Peak 2 is a budget tent, wouldnt trust it in a storm, summer or winter. But the majority of my trips avoid the weather so this has dine well for me. If I feel something is brewing I use my Terra Nova. I still see lots of chat about 3 season this, 4 season that. What make a tent 4 season is a snow skirt and poles than can hold the wieght of overnight snow before you get out of your bag. Cloud Peak 2 too light for that, my Terra Nova is borderline. The Hilleberg is what you get for what you pay but difficult to justify the price for the Lakes or Dartmoor. If I did the Alpine pass route again, in summer, I would take the Cloud Peak

at the end of the day, youre really paying for wind resistance in the hilleberg, the naturehike will stand up to most things the hilleberg will with the exception of high winds.

Think weight is a big thing too, the Naturehike in my opinion is top weight for backpacking but the Hilliberg is not really a backpacking tent but mainly for weekenders and wild campers - still prefer my 1.2 kg tent but like you looking for maybe to buy a couple of others for different trips but nice review - Thanks
Yh the weight is a really big thing! 3.7kg is just way to heavy for me especially in the summer! If I was doing an extreme winter camp it would be perfect. But it isn't very often I do that.

Evening Rob, love this! Fabulous side by side comparison, very in depth and I think the quality shines through on those key points, the devil is in the detail. However I guess the true test is time also. We aren't familiar with either tent so found this walk around really useful, thanks Rob. All comes down to your needs and musts, we wlildbt need the Hildeberg or use it enough. The nature hike looked so good for the price too. I also have the Naturehike Cloud Peak 2 and agree that it's not a 4 season tent, but I don't have any plans to camp in snow.
Personally I think that there are a few advantages to the hillaberg, but nothing like the cost differential.
I paid £135 for my Cloud Peak 2 last year which is 1/8th of the cost of the Hillaberg and some of the issues with my tent can easily and cheaply be fixed, even changing the poles for 9mm diameter.
I agree that it would be better if the groundsheet covered the vestibule, but a piece of Tyvec does the job for me and weights very little.
I think that many of those who buy the Hillaberg will never use it in the extreme conditions it is designed for and could be simply bowing to the marketing hype.

Hilleberg executives must be having a right laugh at staff meetings wondering how high they can go before sales drop off.
I once worked at a factory where the workers would always put kwiksave food into a M&S bag to carry around the place to make it look like thats where their wives went shopping because it was expensive and super quality. ( Similiar I think.) Pigs arse they did.
Yh once you get to a certain price bracket it becomes a status symbol. Yes they are amazing tents but there is definitely some people that look down on others if they don't have a Hilleberg or if anyone says anything bad about them people kick off. All in all they are really good tents but they are very expensive.

A hilleberg used to cost a little more than a Vango. Now their prices have gone through the roof and don’t reflect the quality one bit. 🤷♂️

@@AnotherDayAnotherWalk Vango used to make higher end tents. I still have and use a couple of my Vango’s that are over 20 years old. Then Vango switched to cheaper tents and Hilleberg put their prices up.

The only tent reviewer who actually knows a thing or two about real winter tents
The other, much cheaper tent, is a proper bargain though, and I would use it as a default if I had no other choice, or rather, some choice, but wanted the luxury of space, with a fairly sturdy design. But as you point out, the tapes that clip the fly to the poles look piss poor, and you can see all the places the tent is likely to fail when that time comes. And I wouldn’t want to be in all that collapsing nylon in a force eight gale on the top of a Scottish Munro. That would be the time you wished you had stumped up the cash for that Allak!
Your right there will be a point when it does fail and for someone like you who has done hundreds of camps it will be sooner rather than later but for most people they will only use it in goodish weather a few weekends out the year so it like you say a proper bargain. I would love to know Hillebergs profit margins on there tents as I know the materials are much more expensive but are they taking advantage of the current market? A late reply to your response to my, er, response - Yes, true, if you don't shoot off backpacking every weekend, and for maybe a month of holiday time every year too, the Cloud Peak is, as you agree, a bargain. All the 'If only they'd done this, and made that better' is precisely the point, that's how they make them for that price. On the Hilleberg price point - all their tents are cheaper in the States. How do they do that?! Do they make them there, with cheaper labour somehow? Or is it that people in the US just won't stump up the kind of cash that the European market seems prepared to? But as I have pointed out elsewhere, what you pay for isn't always obvious. Sheer design wins cash prizes - all Hillebergs are easy to pitch for starters, something worth remembering when the weather is rough! I was reminded of this just three nights ago, on Rannoch Moor, in wet and very windy conditions. I took an Exped Orion 2, because it is a 3 pole geodesic, which when pitched hardly moves. Great for a quite-ish night, no flapping fabric, very firm framework. But it is a swine to pitch! And if you move on and use it a second night when the fabrics are wet, getting the very long poles through the pole sleeves - tent fabric on one side or both - which are wet already is a cusser's dream, plenty of opportunity for a swear-off! Expeds are cheaper than Hillies, but the fabrics are good, though the stitching is not of the quality of Hilleberg. You can't have it all in one tent!

a good comparison i think .but for me it comes down to where and when your going to use it .the naturehike wo'nt take the winds like the hille .but if your smart you pitch out of the wind . they are both good tents .but the hille is over priced and very heavy for a wildcamping tent at 3.5 kg .but it is pretty bombproof .? the naturehike is a very cheaper version .and for most folk more than adequate .for me the hille is defo a better tent .but abit over kill if your not into winter camping ? atb kev

I think the weight is worth it for the winter but not the summer. If you didn't take the ground mat it would be 3.3kg. Not sure you could make it much lighter maybe down to 3kg if you didn't use all the pegs and ropes. Think you can buy a summer inner for it but is an extra £250.
a great new vid along these lines would be to see if the cloud peak inner fits in the hille... it would be a lighter and cooler option for hille owners...and considering those guys payy £115 for a footprint ..sure theyd buy a cloud p2 for a spare summer inner tent ????

I own two hilleberg tents they r amazing and worth every dollar and saving up for. The investment will keep u safe and secure and last a lifetime. Ull pass them down. Don't go cheap yull suffer for it and put ur life at risk very easily.
They are really good quality and definitely will last a long time. If you want to camp in extreme weather it is perfect but if you are a fair weather and only camp every now and again I think the naturehike is perfect.

@@AnotherDayAnotherWalk absolutely a good point u make. Hilleberg is more extreme. Not all their tents r as spendy as the staika. Worth checkin out. But other brands can be great too i like eureka. Check out the eureka timberline with vestibule. Its about 180$ to 190$ US one of the best historic tents ever created. Their so strong yet not too heavy. I own one and I use it all the time. I used one for 30 yrs. I'm 42. Their amazing!!! I cudnt suggest a better affordable tent. I still use mine the most for regular fun camping. Its an A frame tent tons of room. 2 to 6 persons versions available. Its been in production since the 1970s. Anyways take care be well and enjoy ur summer!!

As the Cloudpeak is a three season tent a truer comparison test would be with Hilleberg’s Rogen which is the Yellow Label version of the Allak. Still a big price difference of course, but a bit less…

Great comparison mate, I love the hilleberg but the weight makes it a no... Do you know a tent with the same size that would be in-between the 2 in weight and hopefully price? All I can think of is tarp tent scarp 2 but they are never in stock
Thank, Umm I am unsure tbh I wouldn't want to go any heavier than my Naturehike. In price there is loads! MSR do some really good tents but alot of then you have to pitch the inner first then the outer. Or Wild Country helm 1/2/3 are really good tents if you can get hold of one.

Really nice review! I'm thinking of buying Allak 2 or Allak 3 but having a reeeally hard time deciding as the Allak 2 would be awesome for 1 but on the edge with 2 and no floorspace, and the opposite for the Allak 3. Whats your thoughts, is the 2 large enough for 2 grown ups?
It would be a very snug fit for two adults and like you say there wouldn't be mush space inside for your things. If you are happy putting your things in the outside space (vestibule) the 2 could work but you would have to be "friendly" But if you want more room I would go for the 3.
What is the weight difference as if it isn't much I would go for the bigger one as you can split the weight over 2 peoples bags. ie one takes the tent and the other takes the poles and pegs. Hope this helps.

had 2 cloud peak 2 tents, both failed me due to cheap zips, sent them back got a refund, scarp 1 kinda guy now, or will be on wednesday when its due to be delivered

Naturehike is a far more practical tent. Lighter and also cooler in summer. Who needs a four season tent - probably less than 1 per cent of backpackers/campers.

I don't think you're evaluating completely correctly. Because there are so many points of view. The size of your monthly salary is essential. Number of expected overnight stays. The environment in which you will sleep. Whether you will carry the tent on your back, attach it to a bicycle, or drive to the sleeping place by car. The number of rainy days at the location is determined. The surface on which you will sleep, the floor, is always sensitive to cuts. Air humidity in places where the tent is used. It can also happen to you that you go to places where people are not as rich as in your country, Hilleberg can then attract thieves. Specifically for me: I bought several tents of different brands. Each for a different use. I like to try new procedures, so it doesn't just happen to me that I sleep in a tent for more than 70 nights. That's why Naturehike is in my hands immortal.

Why would any one want to camp in snow or in a storm? Campings meant to be a bit of fun. Well actually for me, its a means to an end as I do it fish remote lakes. I think people take things too seriously.

You are really comparing apples and oranges. Hilleberg is a true four season tent and the Cloud Peak is a summer tent / camping tent. If you should compare it to a hilleberg you should compare it to a Hilleberg Rogen.

Yh you can do with some bits like you can buy stronger poles and add some loops to the roof to make it tighter and a few other bits but tbh I think it is fine as it is for 95% of the weather in the UK. Only in a bad and i mean bad storm would you want something stronger.

Hi all the places I have read they are 7.5mm there is a noticeable size difference and if it was only 0.5mm difference don't think you could tell if that makes sense. I will measure tomorrow 👍 Thank you for watching 👍

Pissed of of idiotic reviews. The main point here is that it depends what are you doing. I suggest you are not going to use Naturehike for very demanding conditions and/or life heavy snow/winter conditions. Nobody buys a Rolls for shopping and nobody buys a Ford to go on race track.
Think you have missed the point. They are both advertised as a 2 person 4 season tent, however their is a big price difference. This is to show you the difference also there are a lot of people with Hilleberg tents that use them for a summer nights and tbh most weather's in this country (UK) and it is over kill.
Also don't think the car analogy is very accurate but I get your point.

There is 1000$ cameras and 5000$ and the difference is not the image quality but speed etc depends of the aplicaition. Yes there are idiots with 10.000$ cameras shooting their kids but this is their problem. My point is that the more expensive product provide greater safety, experience, protection etc etc etc subject to weather conditions etc etc. Sure nobody go in expedition with 100$ tent. As i say nobody go with Ford on race track. So the missed point is yours. You can not review a product without speaking of what type of scenarios can be used or not. Of course summer time i can go without tent i guess so what? Both tents are crap because i can go with no tent?
Right I did look at every part and show that it was stronger as well as showing that snow would come in under the naturehike sides. Now if you can't infer that this would therefore hold up in stronger winds and be better in snow maybe I will take your feedback on board for the next test. Sorry but again the cars on a race track doesn't really work but like I said I understand what you are trying to say.
