Hey everyone - I've noticed a few people here have been commenting on how slow I was to pick up on certain things in The Batman, as well as how much I got wrong about the movie.
For those of you who don't know, I have been living with a brain tumor since 2017 and some days are better than others.
When it comes to my cognitive ability, I often experience what's called "brain fog". That is one of my main symptoms and when I have these "brain fog" moments, it severely impacts my ability to process information quickly.
I hope you will enjoy this video despite the severity of my symptoms in this reaction.
This RUclips channel has supported me in my health and wellness journey and I am grateful for all of you.
    ❤️

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 2 года назад +5

I think it was more than that, even. Batman realized that his ultimately-selfish motivation of vengeance could lead him to become as much a monster as Riddler or any other criminal. He understood then that he had to be more.
It's a follow-on from learning about his father's sins and crimes, which may have been committed with the best of intentions but were committed nonetheless, with horrific results. Good intentions pave the road to Hell for good reason; they are never, in and of themselves, sufficient protection against becoming exactly the kind of evil you might be trying to combat.

"He's been Batman, saving people!" He really hasn't, Kazzy. Not yet at least. He's been vengeance, revenge, and fear. At best, Batman has spent his first two years punishing, creating, and sewing fear throughout the city as a masked vigilante. No one in Gotham, other than the Riddler, had any reason to believe him to be a hero until he finally saved the people in the arena during the flood. These are important distinctions to make. ;)

He saved the guy on the train, the little boy in the church, Catwoman and some people at the end actually. His mentality changed over time which makes sense since this is early Batman. He doesn't even have his Bruce Wayne playboy persona yet but I'm sure the sequels he'll have it though.

@@MKF30 He hasn't focused on saving people, besides the boy. His reason for being Batman has been because he hates criminals, he's vengeance. @@gabriel812 He focused on saving people in the water so I disagree, or he wouldn't have cut the electrical line which would have pretty much fried everyone had that his the water...he saved the guy in the beginning. The whole point of him losing it when Riddler wouldn't tell him what he did proved he wanted to prevent and stop what he did.
Just because he's vengeance doesn't mean he hasn't saved people directly or indirectly prior to that. The beginning was pretty obvious. At the end he understands better that he has to be more of a hero and not just an angry vigilante but point still stands he's good and cares overall and the reason he's doing it is to stop crime, if he truly didn't care he'd do nothing, he just cares more for humanity now and this is also still early Batman which even in the books he was the same way.

@@MKF30 the guy on the train was scared of him. You'll notice that he focused on going after criminals, the person saved was just a byproduct. In other hero movies you'll see more of people being specifically rescued. Not until the end does he specifically go to rescue or save someone or people. Catwoman is a love interest but either way he was on his way there anyway and to stop catwoman from killing Falcone. The boy he saved as Bruce and he saw the boy as himself.
And yes he saved the people at the end with cutting the cable, which was after he made the realization. Which is exactly what the person you replied to was saying.

People are confusing Batman with Superman and Spider-Man and forget this is starting off Batman, so he.
That's why I said at the end he still cared as to why he cut the electrical line cause he knew it would shock everyone in the water....that as well as wanting to know what Riddler did if he didn't care he wouldn't have gotten pissed when Riddler was singing and not telling him what his plan was.
He saved CW twice, once from being choked to death by Falcon and two prior to that from murder. Regardless of the love interest between the two. He didn't even trust her half the movie.
Yes the boy he saved he saw as himself but also didn't want him to get smashed by an SUV....

We first hear Batman speaking in a voiceover, the first thing he says in the flesh is “I’m vengeance” after beating up that Joker-faced gang leader. “I’m vengeance” is perhaps THE Batman catchphrase, usually shouted into a bad guy’s battered face. The line seems to have been first delivered by the legendary Kevin Conroy in the “Nothing to Fear” episode of Batman: The Animated Series and has become a staple of the character ever since. The original line was “I am vengeance… I am the night… I am BATMAN!”
Riddler’s line about how his mask allowed him to be himself echoes a famous Oscar Wilde quote: “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he’ll tell you the truth.”
This film differs from other previous Batman adaptations as it is not only a superhero movie but also a detective noir. Drawing inspiration from several important comics in Batman’s archive, such as The Long Halloween and Year One, and utilizing the Riddler as the method for dispersing the mystery, this film explores Batman’s credentials as the "world’s greatest detective".
I enjoyed this movie in theatre with my friend and still remembered their face when we were coming out of theatre in the dark and one of my friend said "shit! I forgot to bring a torch light with me" lol xD

Yeah, I can definitely see where Kazzy got the feeling that it could go much darker and more visceral than it did. The movie used the threat of going full "Se7en" very well, creating that tension without leaving the "implied violence" preference of the noir genre, though you didn't know that until it was over. Neat trick!
There's one note that I think needs to be remembered whenever the Zodiac killer is referenced, because he's become something of a "mysterious genius" in the public imagination, and that note is that the murderer was very much not a smart dude. The Zodiac codes weren't hard to break because they were complex; they were hard to break because they were so sloppily-applied, resulting in messages rife with errors. This makes decoding really difficult, because it's like "decoding" a bunch of random letters; how would you know when you've arrived at the original gibberish?

  • @The_Story_Of_Us
    @The_Story_Of_Us 2 года назад +70

This movie is not for everyone… Because a lot of people are not comfortable admitting we live in a crappy world and barely question it.
The Riddler isn’t much more sick than Batman himself. Think about it, a poor orphan growing up in such extreme poverty that he’s lucky to even be alive, but he’s remarkably intelligent, working his way to becoming a forensic accountant and through his work discovering the biggest criminal conspiracy anyone’s ever seen and he intentionally gives up his whole life (knowing the endgame is prison for life) to expose it and try to make change. That is his intent and the function of what he’s doing. He’s not just a crazy person.
What does make him unhinged is that his (justified) mistrust in the system has pushed him so far that he trusts no one taking part in it. Bella Real, despite actually being a seemingly quite progressive mayoral candidate is still viewed by Riddler as a liar who would just rise to power and then forget about all the poor people like him like everyone else since Thomas Wayne died. So he will not be satisfied by anything short of the complete upheaval of this system.
Now there are many people, myself included, who believe we do have a fundamentally corrupt and bad system that needs to be abolished in favor of something that doesn’t produce poor, marginalized people. But where Riddler becomes a villain is doing this undemocratically, violently, through murder and actual terrorism, motivated by intense hatred for those who created and perpetuate that system, hatred for those responsible for his nightmarish childhood.
That’s where Batman’s story lies. He is the same as Riddler. He wants to make the city better, just like Riddler, he uses violence and fear to meet his ends, just like Riddler and he’s driven by deep-seated childhood trauma, just like Riddler. And just like Riddler, he doesn’r have the intended effect, because all he inspires is fear and violence when those are his chosen tools. It’s why the man he saves from the street gang is terrified of him. He isn’t making things better, because like Riddler his hatred means all they can ever do is hurt people without ever inspiring them to push for change. It’s the philosophy they established in Batman Begins before his crusade even started, Bale’s Batman knew from the start that Batman can’t just beat people up, he needs to inspire people to seek change, shake them out of apathy. That’s the beautiful symbolism at the end, where he leads the frightened people of the city out from the ruins, a helping hand reached out to deliver them from hopelessness, with the first to take his hand being the mayor’s young son whose life he saved at his father’s funeral as Bruce Wayne.
Batman has to be more than a source of fear for criminals, he needs far more to be a source of hope for everyone that things can get better and that he isn’t just there to beat people up, but to be there for them when things get bad. To truly honor his father’s legacy, he needs to do what his Gotham Renewal Fund was meant to do, a safety net for those in need.

"Don't they know who Batman is?"
It's Year Two of his career, and people probably haven't seen him or know what he looks like, but have only heard stories of him. It's also Halloween, so they might just assume that he's just some guy in a Halloween costume and not "THE BATMAN".
He starts out the movie as a vigilante, and has yet to really become the symbol of hope and heroism that we commonly view Batman. Besides Gordon, most of the cops don't like him, either because he's a vigilante getting himself involved in police investigations or because they're corrupt and see Batman as a threat. Even Gordon is a little wary of Batman ("We've been working together for two years and I don't even know who you are, man."), but comes to trust him more than his fellow officers when he realizes how deep and wide the corruption goes.
Batman only realizes that he has to be more than a vengeful vigilante toward the end of the film. Riddler admits that Batman's mission of vengeance inspired him to seek vengeance against Gotham's corrupt elite, and then Riddler's henchman repeats Batman's line of "I'm vengeance."
Batman's efforts didn't have the effect he wanted. He was unintentionally inspiring the bad guys, so he had to change his approach. To do that, he nearly sacrifices his life to cut that livewire and prevent the people in the flooded arena from getting electrocuted, and then he leads them to safety and assists in the rescue operations. Because of that, the people of Gotham start seeing him in a different light, as a symbol of hope.

The person laughing maniacally with him in the cell at Arkham State Hospital(Like in "Joker",it`s not a mental institution for supervillains like it later becomes yet even though it`s still functionally treated in the plot like it is)was Barry Keogan as "Unseen Arkham Prisoner"(A.K.A. The dude who will become The Joker.) The clown comment shoulda been a dead giveaway! Also, the "riddle me this" was Joker referencing the campy Frank Gorshin and Jim Carrey Riddlers whilst Dano played the more serious, narcissistic psychopathic version of the `70s Comics but more murderous, anarchic and connected to Batman`s origin like past versions of the Joker have been.

The laid back detective mystery punctuated with abrupt violence really works and highlights the brutality in a satisfying way. I hope they follow this up and keep it detective focused.

The thing I like the most was they didn't bother with back story and just went into it 2 years into Batman's Mission. Even my mom knows batman's back story so there's no need to waste time with it anymore. They are moving forward with the sequel which is cool.

Really adored the movie from a visual standpoint, Gotham City looked amazing very Arkham Knight the mix of old meets new Gotham that 1930s gothic look meets modern 2020 and hints of 1970s/1980s. Wish we saw a little bit more art deco designs but this is more of a nit-pick as the city felt like the 2nd most Gothic on screen live action Gotham City just behind Tim Burtons Gotham of course. This film being set in 2020s also had modern tech what you'd expected in the 2020s with those massive Monitors on the side of buildings adding so much to the overall look of the city, modern version of classic 1930s billboards.
Both Tim Burtons and more so The Animated Series had this very timeless 1930s look from the fashion to the cars and the architecture but it also had modern tech (for the 90s) as the series was set in the 1990s, Gotham just had this really cool hybrid of old and new. The Batman film doesn't go as much into that timeless look but you can see little elements of Gotham past something I really enjoyed.
This was where The Dark Knight lacked as much as I love the film's story it's Gotham City was really just Chicago. Batman Begins was alright by far Nolan's best looking Gotham City with the Narrows and that cool Art deco train system adding a lot to the city but the Batman 2022 showed that you can have both a grounded setting but also feature a unique looking city not going as far as the Burton movies which look amazing but also not going too far into the grounded featuring a boring city with no personality like featured in The Dark Knight.
I also love the classic 1950s style diner where Riddler was captured just felt so much like the opening of Arkham Knight and it's Gotham in general which drew from every depiction of Gotham from the Neon Lights of Joel Schumacher Gotham to the more retro 1930s artistic from the Burton movies and of course the modern day artistic featured in the Nolan movies. This film nailed the Gothic look while also keeping it more grounded.
Wish we got a little bit more retro vibes maybe have some Blimps overhead (actually could've came in handy when the city flooded you know with transport and supplies) along with some retro looking posters and adverts, adore the location where Bruce talked to Falcone that looked very Tim Burton/Arkham series. I enjoyed the city more than the The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises which really lacked that Gothic artistic and felt more like Chicago than Gotham but were still great movies, music was also amazing very much inspired by Shirley Walker who was the composer for the Batman Animated Series creating some of the best Batman music to date.
Wasn't a big fan of this rendition of Bruce Wayne felt movies like Mask of the Phantasm (Highly recommend watching it) did a way better job at dealing with the conflict between a younger Bruce and Batman but I can see this version developing overtime which is something I can't wait to see in the sequels.
This film drew heavily from the Batman Earth-One issues in one key area. Martha Wayne being an Arkham instead of a Kane pulled right from Batman Earth-One. In almost all renditions Martha is a Kane just like Bruce's cousin Kate Kane who is of course Bat woman. Maybe Kate still exists in this universe but as an Arkham but who knows. Alfred also trained Bruce in both Earth-One and this film with the Earth-One Alfred being a Royal Marine. Since Frank Millers Year One comic Bruce has spent his early years exploring the world coming back to Gotham like we see in Batman Begins which is where he learnt to fight.
A Sequel focused around Mister Freeze inspired by his appearance in the Batman Animated Series would be amazing, an interesting villain but also a fun setting go more for a winter theme with blue overtones instead of Red maybe add more colour instead of the film being dark 24/7. Glad you enjoy the film and cannot wait for any future Batman movies/Shows you react to. Highly recommend Mask of the Phantasm along with the DCAU starting with the amazing Batman Animated Series from the 1990s the best version of the character.

For a PG-13 movie, it was incredibly dark. Feel like they really toed the line on what was allowed and pushed the limits.
One of the small things i enjoyed most from this movie was you actually saw Bruce Wayne with eye black on. Every single batman wears eye black, but you NEVER see Bruce still have it on when he is in the Batcave or in Wayne manor. It added a little extra... grunge (?) i think is the word i'm looking for. Grit? something. and I enjoyed that detail because its just something that always sticks out to me in the films.

Kazzy, my butterfly queen, I am so glad you are watching this movie.
As far as what I thought of the movie, I absolutely adored it.
To me, this is the best Batman movie I've seen in a long time.
Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro and Andy Serkis all equally killed it in their respective roles. Matt Reeves delivered a chilling and dark version of Gotham City I didn't think was possible to see.
Apparently, we're getting 2 HBO Max spin-off shows based on this movie: one about Colin Farrell's Penguin and one about the infamous Arkham Asylum. I can't wait for both of them.
There are nitpicks I have with the movie (none have to do with the runtime), but I really enjoyed this movie. I can't wait for the next one.

There's a quote about Batman in the comics that they seemed to pull heavily from for this movie, can't remember it perfectly but a rough paraphrase is "Bruce Wayne died in the alley with his parents that night...all that's left in him now is rage and pain"...this is Year Two Batman, where he's completely absorbed in (almost addicted to) the Batman persona, he's completely full of rage which he takes out on criminals, and he hasn't taken the time to build the Bruce Wayne playboy persona. At this point, the police don't trust him because he's just as savage as the bad guys are, they haven't had any experiences with him being the good guy (also, a lot of GCPD is crooked, so that doesn't help them to trust him...Gordon isn't, so that's part of why he and Batman work together).
45:55 He's cutting the power cable, as it's still live and the water's very close to touching the end of it...if that cable drops down any further or the water rises much more, all the people in the water would get electrocuted, so he's sacrificing himself (or at least taking the risk of dying) to stop that from happening
The scene at the end with Batman leading the people through the water with a flare is probably the best visual representation of the duality of Batman that any movie has managed to capture: he's simultaneously the savage monster in the darkness for criminals and wrong-doers, whilst also being the single beacon of hope in the shadows for the innocents of Gotham. His realization that he has to be that hope for Gotham's innocents, and his actions to save people in the flooded arena, are what starts the police (well, the ones that aren't crooked) down the path of seeing him as the good guy instead of a threat.

1989's Batman was my favorite too. Until this one. This Gotham brilliantly mixed the fantastical of Burton with the realism of Nolan and hit the perfect balance. Also, like so many have said, the focus on Batman as a detective was a welcome homage to the early conceptions of the character. And the cast was great here. When Bob Kane and Bill Finger developed Batman (and Robin's) rogues - Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Two-Face, etc... they were usually criminals and robbers. More than 50 years later, each villain was developed into individual psychos w/ motivations of their own... Joker is basically an agent of chaos, who believes that Batman is his adversary as a force of order... Catwoman was raised on the street, learned to fend for herself and became a thief... Penguin is a mob boss... Two-Face was a D.A. who went insane and turned to crime w/ an obsession w/ duality...
Riddler was a game-show host, and genius, who fell from grace & turned to crime... In this iteration, the Riddler was an orphan who went insane and developed a lifelong obsession of vengeance against the Gotham City and their elite, whom he blamed for his past misery... he was a genius and his goal was not unlike many of those who hatch terror plots in the world and radicalize followers into executing them. So, this Riddler was more true-to-life... and unlike most Batman movies, he actually succeeded in his goal... but his endgame was ultimately thwarted by the Batman.
Incidentally, the Riddler here is Batman's twisted mirror image... Batman is obsessed w/ seeking vengeance on the city's criminals... Riddler was obsessed w/ vengeance on Gotham City.
Catwoman here is closer to the comic book, rather than the deranged woman that Michelle Pfeiffer portrayed in 'Batman Returns'... So ultimately, 'The Batman' was much closer to recent dark comic portrayal of Batman as a crime fighter, a detective, a manipulator and a seeker of justice... What was great was that here, he was 2 years into his path as Batman and he's still not at his prime, either in skills... or in the equipment... and Bruce Wayne is still not a public persona he has developed. The cool part of Batman is that he has so many facets u can make great stories from... as opposed to Spider-Man, who is limited in his storytelling potential.

l love the different versions of characters and different ways of story telling. I love Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns but can't see how her version of Catwoman would have fitted this movie! It's clear that this early stage batman needed someone and that wasn't going to be Alfred like he said you need a father and I am here for your security, Gordon is a Crime fighter not an analyst, the only person here that totally felt batman was this version of (Zoe Kravitz) Catwoman. I love Julie Newmar I grew up with the TV version of batman and thought her so feminine and regal and was perfect for that campy TV show. In context I love them all equally and thought they all did amazing Catwoman and I look forward to adding more versions to my 💖 list! note I do love Halle berry to haha I love my girls keep them coming!

Favorite Bruce Wayne: Ben Affleck without a question.
Favorite Joker: Heath Ledger without a question.
Favorite BATMAN movie overall: THE BATMAN (2022) without a doubt. It’s art, and can’t wait for the sequel even though I’m quite concerned about the Joker not living to my expectations from the few minutes we see him in this movie. I don’t think it’s an ideal casting. Glenn Howerton would have been a great Joker possibly would have been greater than Ledger had he got the role. I think Howerton got the look of the Joker, he can do the voice, he’s an incredible actor with wide range (People who watched Always Sunny would get it), and he’s a Juilliard-trained actor.
Bale? Hmm, I’m probably one of the few who didn’t connect with his Batman or Bruce Wayne portrayal. The Nolan Bat trilogy however is top-tier 👌. I think he’s another actor who just doesn’t suit the Batman role. Otherwise, phenomenal actor!

I’ve said this before but if Batman somehow stopped all crime in Gotham he needs to retire and admit himself into Arkham Asylum 😂At the least get extensive psychiatric help.

the only mental problem Bruce has is PTSD.
He's a very high functioning Sociopath other than that

@@dcmastermindfirst9418 complicated grief, schizoid personality disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, not sure if there’s a name for it other than child endangerment, he’s been shown to “micro sleep” in order to continue to function without sleep for days. All to dress as an animal he fears so he can exact that same fear to criminals.
Don’t even get me started on his paranoid personality disorder lol. His distrust for people is the reason half the league doesn’t like him most of the time.
Not saying his issues aren’t justified I’m just saying when its over he should get extensive psychiatric care.
Arkham is a bit extreme but you get my point.

@@jayjitsuu I think he's just smart enough to give himself that insurance policy when it comes to the League. Yeah ok he's a bit paranoid but he's leading a team of almost literal GODS.
Child endangerment? I wouldn't go that far. I think he sees himself in them and alot of potential, in his Robins so has this thing in him that says harness and train that potential to it's greatest limit. And doing that gives you Nightwing ;)
And sadly it backfired with Todd.
But hey. We still have Dick.

Ben Afflecks batman was great in BvS. Yes he killed but people seem to completely miss the point that that Batman was a broken batman. Superman helped bring him back.

Great film and really top best Batman films.. I would put it in 2nd place behind “the dark knight “. Cannot wait for the sequel to The Batman.. yay
