    The Ford Escort RS Cosworth is a rally version homologation special of the fifth generation European Ford Escort. It was designed to qualify as a Group A car for the World Rally Championship, in which it competed between 1993 and 1998. It was available as a road car from 1992 until 1996. The powertrain was only fitted to this version of the Escort, a longitudinally mounted Cosworth YBT, a highly tunable turbocharged 2.0 L (1,993 cc) with a bore x stroke of 90.8 mm × 77 mm (3.57 in × 3.03 in) Inline-four engine[1][2] which had an output of 227 PS (167 kW; 224 bhp) in standard trim. Tuning companies have achieved power outputs in excess of 1,000 bhp (746 kW; 1,014 PS)

    I think your headgasket is fine to be honest because you aren't losing fluid and there is no white smoke. Just go through the cooling system and make sure your thermostat is actually opening when it reaches temp, also you can get different temp ratings so make sure you have the right one. As for the hot start make sure your fuel relays arent on the way out or they haven't cheaped out of the spark plugs with low temp rated ones. Might worth cleaning up the earth points.

    • @CreativeHuckleBerry
      @CreativeHuckleBerry 8 месяцев назад

      Yes, the thermostat open on very high degree, the radiator fans should be kicking on aswell, a common thing on older fords is the radiator fans get stuck, i would check with the hand when the car is off if the radiator fans can be spinned easy.

    I would get the radiator out , get it flow tested or cleaned out , if you're doing a timing belt do the water pump at the same time. Also the ramps have mechanical locking pins in them , the car won't fall down on you , it will be safe , have confidence 👍👍 good series this bud , keep up the good work 👍

    That is so sweet having your own hydraulic ramps! Don`t worry about it dropping, it should have a built in safety so if the hydraulics fail it will be caught mechanically. Those hydraulic lifters beat the crap outta using fixed ramps, it makes things SO MUCH quicker and easier. All the best with getting that beautiful Escort Cossie back on the road mate!

      I was thinking that trying to put a new blower resistor on mine. You need to get in a fetal position with the passenger seat slid right back while having hands half the size of normal hands, while you can't even see the screw and are feeling around for it, with a stubby screwdriver. With a ramp I'd have it done in 10 seconds. Without a ramp it couldn't even be done and I just left it loose 😂

    • @Taz6688
      @Taz6688 8 месяцев назад +9

      One car I bought, low mileage, only local runs into town, always serviced, took it on a run, it started to overheat, when safe I opened the radiator cap, it was brown soup, took many flushes to clear out, all the sediment was moving in the system, once flushed out and new antifreeze it was fine, something was missed over the years a proper coolant flush.

    • @K2edg
      @K2edg 8 месяцев назад +5

      As above......... i've seen it a few times where old antizreeze breaks down over time and you get sludge in the lower areas of the rad and engine. Also make sure you have the heater on full hot too, i've seen problems (although not on a Cosworth) where the Matrix is full of air and for the life of us it looked like a head gasket gone....... If you want a 100% head gasket or not test, go to your local garage and get a sniffer test done on the coolant (it's a test that looks for exhaust gasses in the coolant and you get a chemical reaction if there is showing a good or bad head gasket).

    • @bigeein
      @bigeein 8 месяцев назад +2

      Yeh your right , flush the system , replace the water pump and thermostat. Then look at head gasket. Also check your fan is working. Bridge the fan switch at the radiator to make sure it’s running.
      Remove the switch from the fan. Use a split pin or bit of wire. Bridge the connection. Switch on the ignition and the fan should run. If not your radiator fan has gone. Also check that the radiator itself isn’t clogged with dirt in between the fins.

    Hope I'm not stepping on your toes but please re-check your rear brakes, the pistons need to be set so they locate into the pip on the brake pads. In the video ,the pad with the pip is on the outside unless all four have locating pips which is unusual. I'm local to you and am a mechanic and mot tester with a passion for old fords so have some experience. Please get in touch if you need a hand diagnosing possible head gasket trouble.

      also do your wheels again Adam. What do you think the taper on the lugs are for? You need to tighten them up a bit at a time you melt or the wheel isnt centred on the hub. If you fully tighten one up before getting anything on the others then you are trapping the wheel in that position and the wheel is not only out of centre and likely to act like imbalanced wheel at speed, but its dangerous as it causes lugs to come undone. You try that on a big 4x4 with a heavy BFG on it and you will 100% have a wheel come off within 250miles. I like you mate but why buy all the tools when you cannot even be bothered doing things correctly?

    • @MrTwoZZT
      @MrTwoZZT 8 месяцев назад

      I would also add that on some rear calipers like that you have to wind the piston back our slightly to get it set on the threads again for the handbrake adjuster mech inside, Im pretty sure I remember if you wind it out too far you have to wind it all the way back in and then out a bit again to set it right, you can only adjust it outwards not back in, or something along those lines.

    Instant subscribe. A likeable dude doing his own mechanical work on an absolute classic of a car. Very good work!
    Could the problems you're having be caused by a knackered/blocked radiator? It's been sat for 6 years, right?!
    EDIT: I'd feel uncomfortable under the car on a new lift too. But they do have a safety feature in case it fails, which is highly unlikely if it was installed correctly. I'd say give each post a knock before using the lift and keep up with the maintenance and you'll be just fine.

    My advice is to ignore people in the comments telling you to change water pumps, pull the radiator etc. First thing you need to do before throwing parts at it or pulling anything apart is perform a compression test and leakdown test. That will tell you definitively whether the head gasket is gone or not. First rule of fixing anything; diagnose the problem before trying to fix it.

    • @justbreakingballs
      @justbreakingballs 8 месяцев назад +1

      No. Absolutely no real reason to start looking at the the head before snagging out the cooling system. Agree don't start throwing parts at it but bleed it, flush the rad etc.

    Circulation problem, you didnt appear to bleed the system, air vent on top of t stat, also pull off 8mm pipe at turbo return, if no water then remove turbo feed pipe from the 8mm brass pipe coming from the back of the t stat to check its clear, this can choke up. Id be removing the complete t stat assembly from the head to check in behind. The fact that theres no heat coming from the bottom hose shows no circulation. If it was the water pump Im sure you'd hear that.

    Hi Adam, if it's been standing the rad may need a thorough flush, also worth checking the water pump impeller isn't loose on the shaft, and, I'd have the thermostat housing off and pressure flush each hose etc.. all before I'd worry about the head gasket. Alex.

    Keep the faith. You will get it sorted. Any chance of doing a vlog on your new car lift?

    You could try taking the car to someone with an emissions tester. They can put the probe in the header tank and test for hydrocarbons on the coolant. It's not 100% accurate but it might help point you in the right direction. Or give you piece of mind.
    Don't worry about the ramp it'll be fine with you under it. Just keep it regularly checked by professionals.
    Looking forward to seeing more of the build, keep up the good work.👌

      You can buy one of those rubber bulb testers to plug Into the top of the rad. You fill it with indicator solution that picks up hydrocarbons in the water. Samcrac uses one on his video's

    Love the copper grease he’s left on the brake pad backing plate. Sheer genius.

    We put a mk1 sierra xr4x4 back on the road after 20 years in the garage, first thing we did was flush through all the water ways, it still had the original anti freeze in it....we changed it all gave everything we could get to a good clean and some of it had blocked up, heads have never been off and its still on the original water pump and hoses, we have done 2500 miles since june 2022 without any issues now, in fact sometimes expecially on longer motorway runs, its running probably a bit to cool, but thats not a issue....

    That clicking when you lift the car Adam is the anti drop mechanism working if you don't here that clicking then don't lift the car.

    Poster car for me too, love them in red.
    Can’t wait to see this progress, hopefully a full underside resto ?
    Think the wheels need to go though, if they need a spacer that big.

    Great job Adam, keep in mind though that polyurethane bushes are an essential upgrade to any Cosworth. I highly recommend keeping/fitting them everywhere possible.

      Except the rear inner/outer trailing arms, don't polybush these.

      @@davedree True, there used to be a 6 degree rear beam/arms combo for this, not sure if still available. It completely transforms the car.

    For me its the rad that's blocked, a dam good flush out should clear the overheating, a good quality rad flush will do the job, just found your channel, its great to see someone from our area with an interesting channel.👍👍

    Try bleeding it with an expansion tank attachment kit. I got one of amazon for my scooby. Helps get any airlocks out the system. Took me like half hour to bleed it properly and for all the hoses to warm up.
