Helldivers 2 Controversy - SONY's Biggest Mistake (UPDATE in Pinned Comment)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 май 2024
- Sony is making a glaring misjudgment with the most significant PlayStation 5 hit of the year. It feels like a bait-and-switch, enticing players under false pretenses. Although there is a notice about linking accounts, it's easily overlooked because it wasn't mandatory, leading many players to either miss it entirely or assume it was an error or something Sony chose not to enforce.

UPDATE: SONY has tweeted this! 🥳🥳🙌🙌🙌🙌
"Helldivers fans -- we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.
We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans." - Playstation

PCMR brought Sony to heel.
MAJOR ORDER COMPLETED.
New Major Order : Restore the Honour of Helldivers 2 now that Democracy is saved from the Tyranny of Sony. For Liberty, for Super Earth!
I LOVE DEMOCRACY! Let's start turning those reviews around Helldivers! They surrendered, and It's important to show that we have accepted their surrender and will cease fire. Animosity breeds animosity, so show none, but don't be foolish, remember what they did until they earn our trust back.
Let that sink in. You are not allowed to play game, that you've bought, because you live in the wrong country.
It's even worse. Remember the controversy surrounding the games anti-cheat, which basically functions like a root-kit? Well combine that with the PSN account and their TOS. It basically gives Sony unlimited accsess to all the data on your PC and the right to ban you if they, or their new AI pattent, don't like what they find.
On ps5 so I'm good but honestly how can Sony ruin this for everyone, I mean really arrowhead was killing it and I absolutely love helldivers 2 but if I were in the situation as pc players I'd be livid and people wanna defend Sony... I mean come on we had something good going here now look at it, I hope they revert it because this is gunna damage helldivers in the long run
@atat1578 it sucks that Sony players. The player count cut 80% on pc and make the order harder complete. I have a playstation, but I don't like their new banning system they are going to add. One bad word or make someone mad. Banned.

Really does feel like they're making an active attempt to get a spot in Guinness Book of World's Most Depressing Records: Too Dumb to Live Edition

if there's a time to disband the California branch (by extension purging a majority being strangled by the current control board) and move SONY back to japan, now's the time.
It's not even a month yet 💀

They have every right to be pissed at SONY. After all, Sony at one point in time was in Japan, making games for Japanese audiences. Now not only they abandoned them, they treat them like a joke by censoring and mocking their culture.
That's what happens when you have a branch in California.
Sony the company well known for being a very easy company to hack
have a feeling it's about to happen again................
Wish I knew how bad their security was before I got your data was compromised mail
I see you all over, dude. How’s things going?
I myself was one of those who had their data stolen in one of Sony's data breaches, which prompted me to contact them to have my account completely closed, as much as was possible to do. I for one have absolutely no desire to trust them with my data again when I have actively avoided their games, their consoles, and their influence for over a decade
The main reason I refuse to make any kind of account with Sony. I(and many others) have absolutely NO TRUST in Sony to protect my data when they've had massive breaches every few months.
I would like to quote one of the top reviews on steam about the game as it sums up how I feel about it too:
"I was so busy having fun that I forgot about corporate greed for a moment."
I feel that should be rhymed to that “Forgot about Dre” song from 1999 by Dr. Dre and featuring Eminem?🤗
“They was so busy having fun that they forgot about corporate greed…”😄
In this case its greed but a big issue in gaming is that people think any sort of income is greed. You work a job right? So you're just greedy? Well no because you have bills to pay and if they don't get paid the lights go out. Its the same for everyone. If they don't bring money in, they don't pay bills, game gets shelved.
So gamers need to learn the difference so they aren't freaking out everytime a paid item comes along. Instances like this, with Sony, don't help that because this just reinforces all the false claims of greed that people have.
@@Damaged7 I agree that people need to know the difference, but this is greed though, what Sony did. so it applies correctly.
You're correct that just because you make money doesn't necessarily mean your greedy, but on the flip side, having bills to pay doesn't mean you can't be greedy either. Neither of these are mutually inclusive/exclusive.
SONY literally just dropperd their "2nd Class Citizen/Player" List by doing this.
Welcome back to the land of suffering, people.
"I have a brilliant way to increase our PSN user numbers!"
"Offer cosmetics to players for logging in through our network?"
"That's small-brain! No, we're going to make it a REQUIREMENT to play at all!"
"I thought you said it'd increase our PSN user numbers!?"
"I didn't think they'd revolt after we screwed them over.. We've even lost support from the PS fans!"
"Quick! Reverse it! We can't let the game die!"
@@dreymak4071 the game is dead. Sony lied and then banned all countries that can't get a PSN account. Sony is not gonna backpeddle on this.
They are gonna double and triple down until the game dies completely.
Between triple a studios Killing succesful games overnight and High budget movie studios producing flop after flop, youd think these companies are allergic to profit
Only a portion of the people who have access to the game are even aware anything is going on. Most don't, because they don't concern themselves with anything beyond having fun with the game. Its a game, meant for fun, so they have fun, they don't go out of their way to be miserable.
This game can survive and it can live. It can also die, its up to the people. Stop acting like this game is dead, its not. If angry gamers want to devote their time to killing it then yes it will die and then you can blame them. I mean, it won't be hard if Sony already got the ball rolling right?
Well , nobody said that effective propaganda was cheap.
@@Damaged7 that depends, but the consumers are the ones with the final word.... not Sony.

Someone forgot to say "careful Icarus" to Sony. Thats how we got here.

We will miss you and the other helldivers we are losing because of this. Sony might forget you, but this community will remember your service against the bots and bugs for years to come.
This is why piracy exists. Because companies acting like pirates, making piracy not only justified, but mandatory if you want to play the game the way it was intended. (For example, if you have a game with Denuvo, if you pay for it you're getting a worse game than you would if you pirate it, since Denuvo has been proven time and again to massively degrade game performance).
Reasons why people pirate: DRM hurts performances, Can't find old games anymore on stores, or common reasons it's money issues.
Or cases like The Sims where you can't have a decent gameplay without the thousands of DLCs
How does piracy exist to circumvent a live service game that loses half of its features including multiplayer when its cracked? Pirated multiplayer games are rare and you aren't going to find any that are replacing the live service element that Helldivers has.
@@Damaged7 Which that's the downside of playing a pirated game that you can't play multiplayer or pvp. Even if you could do it, you can't go against other players from other servers but you can only play with your friends on steam. So it's a win and a lose scenario if playing Helldivers 2 or any other pvp or multiplayer games.

Damn. I feel for those who bought the game on Steam and now can't play it because they don't have a PSN account. This should be a crime. I'm surprised Valve isn't honoring their policy on this matter. Yeah, I know there's a time limit for refunds, but this is a shady move by Sony. Other companies may follow in Sony's footsteps if there is no repercussion for this.
From what I have read, Valve is refunding people
It should be a crime because they modified the TOS without consulting the other party, but it's videogames where every company does it so no one bats an eye
It's even worse than that. Remember the controversy surrounding the games anti-cheat, which basically functions like a root-kit? Well combine that with the PSN account and their TOS. It basically gives Sony unlimited accsess to all the data on your PC and the right to ban you if they, or their new AI pattent, don't like what they find.
@@axhen I'm pretty sure that in most countries it IS in fact extremely illegal. Don't quote me on this but I think and from what I've seen what Sony did might include blackmail, false advertising, changing the terms of a contract without notifying the other party, fraud, breach of contract, scamming as they refuse to give customers a product they already purchased, damaging another parties reputation (Steam), damage to another parties income (Steam, seeing as their paying for the refunds out of pocket). Ubisoft was right when they said we don't own games anymore. This is why physical copies of PC games need to come back.
Good luck with that, especially when that also require effort on people's part to keep their own backups.
People love their conveniences more than they do anything else. Why do you think CD Drives are no longer a standard on PCs, other than most modern games carry more data than any CD can hold.

@@Alteori I went and made my own version of that availability map and while I did so I had a few thinks... the main commonality in the countries/regions is how committed they are to IP laws. Sure, there's limited internet access on Micronesian islands... so? that's on whoever lives there. If they don't have internet they can't buy the stuff online at all. But... what that really translates to is having few customers in those regions. But that's not a valid reason to block the entire region from buying.

In my experience Steam has been really good about this kind of stuff. It's not irregular for them to refund you if something bad happens to the game, even months after release.
Helldivers may have been one of the few examples we've seen of a fun game at a good price that's not hindered by a big company, until now. To some the backlash is shocking. You know, it´s going to be cheaper to be bought by BlackRock after this for sure. :)
When I bought the game, I remember having the PSN as optional.
Now it has become mandatory, and I am having a dilemma of refunding the game because:
1. I am in one of the unfortunate countries for PSN/Sony to screw over.
2. I have invested both time(194hrs) and in-game purchases(35USD or 2kPHP) that I have no idea if it can be refunded fully or not.
3. Many people, even some from the Philippines weren't able to get a refund over 10 times.

Unpopular opinion: people need to get comfortable with playing single-player games again. Does anyone actually get anything positive out of playing with randoms online? Any game with no reliance on an Internet connection cannot be fucked over by it's developer or publisher after its in your hands. My copy of _Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas_ is the exact same today as it was when I picked it up on release day 20 years ago.
Why unpopular? I totally agree!
I have never played online (meaning - where I´d need to pay), I have never even owned PS or X-Box. Why would I? So many games on PC that I can´t play them all until the end of my life. And idiots collecting films or music on digital platforms - well, serves them well. They don´t value their own money so I can only feel schadenfreude if they´re fleeced by corporations. Monkeys robbed by activists, it´s actually funny how dumb some people can be. :)
If purchasing is not ownership, then piracy isn't theft.
We play PC games to avoid needing Consoles to play, Sony wants to farm us PC players for PSN accounts and get more cash from forcing said people to by said console to even make said accounts
Yep, it sounds like a scam.
I just checked, and Helldivers 2 has racked up over 213 000 negative reviews on Steam since Friday. And with this now starting to gain traction outside of the normal gaming nerd sphere, I think this is going to kick Sony in the nuts not just in terms of Helldivers 2 sales tanking on PC, but also affecting any future PC releases they might be involved in, and potentially people who were considering getting a playstation for various reasons now reconsidering.
Personally I was really looking forward to Ghost of Tsushima finally coming to PC, but with Sony apparently making an effort to make me not want to give them money, I'm gonna nope out.

@@landonkam6727 so you´re just willing to pardon them if they backpedal? No offence but - are you a monkey falling for a trick of banana for free? :)
Their Steam page always said that you need a Play Station account, they just hadn't enforced it until recently.
Didnt know Sony dabbled with Bethesda and Ubisoft
Am sorry for Arrowhead
So Sony and Arrowhead knew Helldivers 2 would need to sign into PSN and never told anyone
So they let people buy the game even tho 170 countries do not have access to PSN
How is this Legal?
They let people buy the game for 3 months and said nothing knowing it would need PSN 3 months later
From my understanding it's not. They in all likelihood have broken multiple laws in God knows how many countries with this move.
It´s legal because oligarchy said so. :)
So, are we all supposed to hire a lawyer to read the terms of service every time we buy a game?
Damn everyone’s dogging on these guys huh?
Warranted.
Major win! Sony has walked back the mandate for PSN requirements! Democracy prevails!!!
I am glad you did good research there's some people attacking blindly with rumors and making this dumpster fire even worse
Company: Our customer's are happy. We must not be squeezing enough money out of them yet.
"If buying isint ownership, then piracy isint theft."
The policy doesn’t go into effect until June 4th. Arrowhead has said that they are working with Sony to come up with a way for people in those countries that can’t get a PSN but have already bought the game to be able to play.
Sony always intended for you to have to have a PSN to play. The requirements was always there on the Steam game page. They required it from the beginning, and Arrowhead knew for at least 6 months before launch. The Arrowhead devs decided to suspend the account linking because it was causing some technical issue. This whole thing feels like Sony realized the subscription numbers didn’t go up, and now that the technical issue is fixed they want it to be reinstated.
If it was always the plan for it to require PSN, then why sell the game in countries they KNOW people wont have the option to create one?
Then why did they allow the sale of the game to players who live in countries that do not have access to PSN? The company knew for 6 months that they wouldn't be able to play the game. You can't bait and switch to fluff up your numbers to make investors happy.
And if they allow players in countries that do not support PSN to play without an account, then why force other players to do so? Sony should be like every other company and buy customer information from google if they want it that bad.
If they knew. IF THEY KNEW.
Why did they sell the game in the first place to countries that cannot play it? To avoid drama?
It does explicitly state that it is required yes, but it's at the bottom left corner in small white text next to a QR code and a large yellow button with a yellow outline that says "SKIP". Not "skip for now", just "skip". They did not make it clear enough and that still doesn't explain them selling it countries they knew wouldn't have access to it.
It's tough having such a successful product as a developer under a crappy publisher who pulls the rug under you and it's customers.
My heart goes out to Arrowhead. Sony, you 🤬'd up.
Instead of blocking everyone who doesn’t have/want a PSN account, Sony should have just tried to incentivize Steam players to link accounts with PSN (like giving out free cosmetics to whoever linked).
God fucking damnit. 2024 started off bad, and then in came HD2, the one, singular, shining beacon in an ocean of slop and utter dogshit.
And then Sony killed it. It's like the entire industry just CAN NOT ALLOW US TO HAVE NICE THINGS AT ALL.
They can´t. They are allergic to us having fun just as the vampires are to garlic. Lol. Did you honestly think that activism was benign? :)
Your point about people using video games to relax and stuff and the Asmongold clip you used at the start of the video, Ukraine and Russia are at war right now and now the people there who wanted to play/were playing HD2 can't anymore.
You also can't use a VPN to make an account because it's against Sony's ToS (Terms of Service) so if you get caught doing that your account is banned.
People also don't want to link a PSN account because Sony has a history of being hacked. Someone listed some of the times they've been hacked in a steam review, this what they said:
"Yeah i'm not linking my account to PSN.
April 2011: Hackers Access Personal Data of 77 Million Sony PlayStation Network Users
May 2011: Personal Details on 25 Million Sony Online Entertainment Customers Stolen
June 2011: Sony Pictures Website Hacked, Exposing One Million Accounts
November 2014: Hackers Steal 100 Terabytes of Data from Sony Pictures
August 2017: Hacker Group Accesses Sony Social Media Accounts
September 2023: Sony Investigates Alleged Hack
October 2023: Sony Notifies Employees of Data Breach"
I looked at some of other Sony exclusive games that will be coming out this years, so I'm wondering if this will happen to them including Stellar Blade.
We dive together. Or we don't dive at all.
Solidarity. Liberty.
Region Lock bs at its finest.
I hope Arrowhead is regretting not going with Xbox in the first place.
Or even just going independent.
Sony owns the license for Helldivers. They couldn't make *this* game with anyone else, unfortunately.
Microsoft is worse if not as bad as Sony, they should go independent instead.
Did you finish reviewing invincible?
I noticed Åland islands on the list of non-PSN countries, Åland islands are actually a part of Finnish archipelago and not a country. Åland in Swedish or Ahvenanmaa in Finnish is an autonomous and demilitarized region of Finland, so it's a part of Finland even it has own flag. PSN works here in Finland, but somehow doesn't work in some part of Finland, I live in south-west of Finland so quite close to this supposed non-PSN "country" Åland islands, I could take a ship from the city where I live and where PSN works, to this mysterious non-PSN "country" Åland islands and suddenly I wouldn't have access to the PSN within the borders of the same country.
I didn't know u game alteori
As a FORMER HD2 player, do not buy this game. Is it a good game, yes. However the corpo greed that is being displayed right now is possibly criminal. I am currently on my 8th refund request and will continue until i am granted my refund.
I love how the opening is a video of a stream of a stream.
I loved playing this game for a few months now. Its honestly the best online co op ive ever played. But you got to have stadards somewhere and im not going to keep playing if Sony is going to force this.
Its a damn shame.
They reversed their decision! You won't have to create a PSN account now! Major order completed everyone! Great work!!
Come on, are you going to trust Sony again? Poke them where it hurts - in the money department. Otherwise you only deserve if they f8ck you again in the future. :)
Source?
Sent 7 request to steam for a refund and they keep denying me with 3 hours of game play. I've mentioned the new PSN change and how this would violate the CCPA as a Cali resident.
"we dive together or not at all"
Major Objective COMPLETE.
As and aside I just learned what the Harley Quinn show did to Mrs. Freeze. They gave her a tramp stamp and now she's hooking up with men everytime she's on screen.
Did you already react to this?
It seems like the writers deliberately shit on a loving monogamous relationship between Mr. Freeze and Mrs. Freeze. Where they both deeply committed to each other. And I know the Harley Quinn show isn't canon but it still does a massive disrespect to him and her's loving relationship by turning her into a massive h** who manipulates men (Bane) to do her chores and tasks.
I agree with you Alteori! This is why I mostly play single player solo games. Also why I still buy physical media.
Helldivers 2 is just living proof that we aren't anymore allowed to have nice things. Or anything in general
I love the David Attenburo bit. heh.
The region lock thing is basically a 1:1 reflection of geopolitics. Just think about the DVD region lock for a second and you'll realize who has control over who during that time period.
This is the main reason why I didn't play this game when I found out it didn't have a single-player offline mode unlike the first game that had one. That first game was made and ported over nearly every Sony console since it came out about 8~9 years ago, only going to PC as a non-Sony version. I do not believe the studio didn't know this was possibly going to happen given the recent news that Sony was moving to put more games to Steam and to incorporate the whole PSN account thing to Steam. It seems my guess was right.
