    I got my Red Rider in 1964. I saved a dime every week from my weekly allowance (a quarter) to get enough to buy it. It cost me $9.99. The look on that clerks face when I poured out my bag of dimes was priceless! We lived out in the country, so naturally I used it for hunting. It worked good on birds and would take a rabbit at close range with a head shot. But, squirrels were too tough, the BB would just bounce off! My dad said I should stick with my bow on the squirrels and that gave me an idea. We had some 6 inch long, wooden shaft Q-tips that only had the cotton at one end. They were for cleaning stuff. I found that if I sharpened the end without the cotton and pushed it down into my Red Rider like a muzzle loading rifle, it would shoot that "dart" just like an underwater speargun! I tested it for accuracy and found that I'd have to be within 20 feet to hit a 2 inch circle and that was good enough for a body shot on a squirrel. My biggest problem was getting within 20 feet of a squirrel that was sitting perfectly still and out in the open. Needless to say I didn't get many shots at squirrels, but I found the "darts" worked well on birds too when I ran out of BB's and the "darts" were reusable!

      It's amazing what we did when we were kids back in the 60's. I think I'm probably about 4 to 5 years behind you. I don't think my dad wanted us to have bb guns, but I would have done the same thing with the Christmas Wish RR. The compass and sundial would have been great. I would have been taking that back on the strip mine roads into the CCC planted pine trees for a real adventure! We did things like that. Great time to grow up. Thanks for sharing such a cool story!

    I did this as a kid probably around ten years of age. Found a very old daisy in a friends barn almost unrecognizable but it was a daisy and the spring was in tact. My young engineering mind went to work as you just did and yes it was a feat to get the spring in and slide the top pin , especially at my age, However i got and boy o boy did that thing shoot! It would bust coke bottles and penetrate plywood for a short time any how as the trigger mechanism was too weak to handle that older thicker spring tension and that was it for that daisy. I soon aquired a Sheridan silver streak and never looked back😊 Great video and thanx for the memories 👍

    Did training in Army basic training with Red Rider BB guns in the 1960s. Learned to hit Coke bottle caps pitched in front six or seven feet away while shooting from the hip. This was training to shoot the M-16 from the hip. Handy skill to have in Vietnam.

      That's a great story! I re-looked to be sure, but the book I featured in the beginning of this video actually did mention that. There are several photographs of a line of Army recruits with helmets and LBE's shooting Daisy BB guns at Fort Benning in the 60's. They called that "instinct shooting" training. Glad it helped you out in Vietnam. By the late 80's, when I went through Basic, that was long gone.

Last year I tried using puck lights to get it to work inside during the winter, and that turned out to be a failure. Let's hope this little one works through the winter, so I can test inside. Easy enough to convert mps to fps, even though it supposedly is supposed to work with fps.

    Excellent results and great video that was fun to watch as usual. I upgraded my Red Ryder too, about a year ago, but I only installed the spring and not the tube thing. It made it a little harder to cock but it's not bad. Over my chrono it's doing around 330fps give or take a couple of fps. That's noticeably better than stock condition, but not as fast as if I had the larger diameter air tube like yours does.

I tried puck lights last winter, but they were way, way off on my Astra Cub video, so I decided to use this one for the winter. Hope it holds out, even if it gives me mps only. @brianwilke592  3 дня назад

      Good proposal. Sounds like a possible future video...unfortunately, I didn't do an accuracy test with the same Red Ryder before changing out the spring. I only did the speed test, same gun, same chrony. In the video I have just posted on the Daisy 499B, in the opening scene I was shooting at one of those Daisy targets with the 499B, no flyers. Not in the video, was shooting I did with my two Red Ryders from the same chair. The more powerful Red Ryder (the one featured in this video) had a flyer, but was just outside one of those stars. The other Red Ryder still had a grouping of less that a quarter, but not even close to as tight as the 499B. I'll take the slight drop in accuracy for the extra punch. What would be a test would be testing the two Red Ryders out past five yards, but not much past eight yards, because given the low speeds, they aren't worth much past that. So, maybe next Christmas....? we'll see, depends on what they have up...no new Red Ryder versions, I may do it. Thanks for the comment!

When we played Army, sometimes someone would get hit with a bb, and it only stung. No way it was going 350 fps, so, I'm thinking by the 1960's Daisy had already made the decision there were too many lawsuits on the way if they had the stronger spring. • @brianwilke592
      @brianwilke592  Месяц назад

      Depends on how much they would charge. It probably would cost a lot to make, since it would require new tooling, and probably need a strong spring package like the Cobalt327 package. I know from general comments on other videos (not mine) that when Crosman came out with the 100 Yr anniversary walnut 362, there were a lot of bad remarks about it because of the price. I figured the cost over a regular 362, and didn't think they charged too much, and went ahead and bought it. It was worth it for me....I still think that is my favorite of all my airguns just because of the feel, and how it shoots. I haven't changed it a bit, and still take it out to shoot just for the heck of it...you know get back to basics. Others, however, say they could get a really hot pcp for the same price. So it would be interesting...I would definitely look into buying one...but it would be a big gamble for the corporate bean counters at whatever financial holding company on Wall Street that now owns Gamo/Daisy/Crosman and who knows what else.

      @@brianwilke592 I think you have good points. I was thinking of using existing components and adding an anodized aluminum (colored like the thick clothes hangers) stock and tag it with a fancy retro name. I guess making a cocking barrel with attorney approved ratcheting anti-bear trap mechanism would be an expensive gamble. I got an anniversary 362 also. Price was ok (I waited until the initial price was dropped) quality was not there. My first gun would not hold air overnight and had a rivet in the pumping arm catching. I had to send it back to get a different stock and forearm and valve work.

And they probably only had about 10 in there when I was filming that, which I think was mid Nov. I don't know why Daisy decided NOT to promote the Red Ryder this Christmas season. Makes no sense to me.

He was 11 years older than I was and by the time I got mine in the early 60s I guess they had weakened the springs but I learned on it. But by the time I was 13 I had a shiny new 22 single shot I'd picked up and sold a mounded up pickup bed of walnuts to get. Ordered it from a Montgomery wards catalog and still had enough money to buy 2 boxes of 22 amo for 25 cents a box. How times have changed.

    Fun video. My first air rifle was a Benjamin from the 1960s. Don't have it anymore. Do these Red Ryders use air anymore?

    • @brianwilke592
      @brianwilke592  Месяц назад

      The Red Ryder is just a spring action air gun. But the spring compresses the air and the sudden concussion pushes the bb out, not contact with the spring mechanism. It is not like a pumper, though, because that requires air to be compressed in a container with valves. Daisy's 880 is like that. The old Benjamin from the 1960's I think was the pumper, although a very nice one. I bet you wish you still had it; they are worth some bucks, even if only for restoration only!

    • @brianwilke592
      @brianwilke592  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks for commenting! I am not an authority of any kind regarding dieseling BB guns, or pellet rifles. Short answer: I don't know. Nuanced answer: I would think "no" You are basically adding an oil residue to the bb, and this will eventually coat the smooth bore surface of a bb gun barrel. I had this problem with the newest version of the Crosman 760, which is a smoothbore. I tested it with both pellets and bb's. It did okay with pellets, but with bb's it was like shooting knuckleballs. They were all over the place, but in tight groups. A commenter suggested that the oil was causing the rotation of the bb to spin sideways, much like a spit ball in baseball. So I cleaned the barrel of all oil debris, and the gun shot much more accurately with bb's.

After doing this video, and seeing how the spring kit worked, I looked on Cobalt327's e-bay store page to see if he had a spring kit for the 499B. He did, and it is specifically for the 499B. There is no tube, like the one I showed in the opening scene where I showed the kit. Apparently, there is a less expensive 499. He cautions that kit will NOT work on the less expensive 499....it has to be a 499B. I ordered the last one...it just got here yesterday. I haven't even opened the package yet. He advertises it will get the 499B from 250 fps to 400 fps. Check with his site...just Colbalt327 now and then to see when he has some up for sale. Mine ran about $25. Good luck.

      I shot the original version quite a bit in the video I did last year. Same gun. I didn't really notice it was that accurate...average. After 5 yards the grouping scattered. With the upgrade it seemed to scatter less at the 7 yard mark. And it obliterated the Daisy shatter disk, which is cool. The ordinal version just kind of broke the shatter disk in three pieces. That's my experience; yours may be different, and thanks for pointing that out. The 300 fps might well be the "sweet spot."

    • @daisymae6561
      @daisymae6561 28 дней назад

      Spent many hrs a few yrs ago with 3 “Walmart” Red Riders. Tested gun springs, air tubes, barrels mods, every available brand of BBs. Really enjoyed it. All accuracy ck were done off rests, 4x scope and 30ft indoors. Also used chronograph to ck velocities.
      I settled on approx 300fps with std spring and drilled out air tubes. I believe the heavy springs caused excessive barrel “jump/vibration”.
      The biggest dia BBs shot the best, these were “Marksman” brand BB. Amazon carried them at time. They were several thousand bigger and very concentric.
      At 30’ I could do 1 1/4” 5 shot groups --as with most shooting there’s always a flyer.
      I bought 100 4.5 mm Ball Bearings. These were perfectly round and exactly 0.177” dia. Shot some 3/4” groups with them. At 10 cents each -I didn’t do any plinking.
      Thanks for video. Enjoy the Daisies.

      @@daisymae6561 Sounds like you did some extensive testing. Just curious, why not just get the 499B. It will give you super great shot groups. You'll have to pay more for the bb gun, but you are buying really good quality. I've got one, will do a video on it some day. I will try your bored out tube theory, with a 105, in several videos. (The main jist of those videos will be making entirely new stock...just in the idea phase now, but if I'm going to go to the effort to change stock, would like a little better performance too). Thanks for the excellent comments. I get comments from guys like you, and I take them to heart...always learning. Love to have you subscribe if you haven't already.

    • @daisymae6561
      @daisymae6561 24 дня назад +1

      Thanks for the reply. I’m sure the 499 would be more accurate, like to know the bore dia. The std Red Rider runs around 0.178”. Most BBs runs 0.172+/- . That’s a lot of “slop” as it bounces down the tube. The “Marksman” match bb runs 0.177” and more concentric than others. The Crossman coppers are some of the worst I’ve measured.
      My opinion is bb fit to bore is the most important issue for accuracy. Plus concentricity.
      Started messing with Cobalts springs several yrs ago. Actually blew a shot tube thru the abutment with one.
      To me velocity is second to accuracy. If u don’t hit it--
      I got into Airsoft guns to see how they could throw a plastic pellet so far and remain true and straight. ASU know steel BBs start sailing shortly after leaving the barrel.
      Well the secret is backspin achieved by a “hop up” device
      That creates backspin. .
      Amazing what that does for a plastic (6mm) bb that weighs less than the 4.5 mm steel bb.
      So I’ve tried to place rubber tubing in the top of the shot tubes, to create backspin. No luck, unlike the hopup device which engages the bb at launch, the rubber has to be placed farther down the tube. Haven’t found the magic yet. Need the service s of a toolmaker:).
      I’m working on another modification, trying to stiffen the shot tube. Still think the shock of the plunger hitting the abutment seal affects the accuracy. At 300 fps it takes a “long” time before the bb gets clear of the shot tube, lots of time to bounce the tube around.
      Nice talking to another Daisy addict. Stay in touch.
