As a Blaze fan, my opinion is that this is the best cover ever done of this one. And I've heard most of them. They get the spirit, the music and do it right.
@@JohnnyBGoode-xw9zj I loved John, may he rest in peace, but he changed Blaze's lyrics. That's a sin. Surprising, too, since he was upset that Johnny Cash changed his lyrics to Sam Stone for television. This Avett Brothers version is 2nd only to Blaze himself. But, whatever ... art is subjective.
Jerry jeff is from new york, still a great artist but not Texan by any stretch. He lived by the old saying, I might not be from Texas but I got here as quick as I could! Waylon is the true King of Texas as always will be
Amazing cover, dare I say I even feel it more than I did John Prine's beautiful version. But the original will never be replaced. Blaze Foley's life lent a lonley legitimacy to his version that few others could.
" Try and hide my sorrow from the people I meet and get along with it all " " I'm tired of running around looking for answers I already know " "I could build a castle of memories just to have somewhere to go " Wooooo Devastating truth. Thank you Blaze.
Yes, Foley wrote a classic masterpiece but John Prine makes it profound and gives me chills stone cold sober with his performance - perfection and makes this amazing score an unforgettable composition and sound recording. Without Foley it would never exist. Think about that for a sec. Startling. My prayer is that writers and musicians never cease going against the stream and being truly original, never following trends or advice. @@Artem-kv4er He befriended an old man. The old man's son would come by when his social security check came, beat up his dad and take his check to feed his heroin habit. Blaze was there one time and tried to stop him. He shot Blaze with a rifle. Pretty sad story.
Seth does now as well he’s just more.. intense when he plays.. saw Dave Rawlings Machine front row- all 5 eyes closed in harmony only strings.. Jesus it was freakin unreal even got a “China Doll” outta Dave🙂
John Prine absolutely graces us with his version of this song, it’s by far one of the most beautiful songs ever written and anybody that sings it, pulls on my heart strings
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE John Prine ( saw him in, I think, 2009 ), but something about how he changed the lyrics still bugs me; "' ""singin' songs for the people I meet" totally undercuts the beautiful sadness in the song. He should have learned when he let Johnny Cash change the words in "Sam Stone;" if you want to sing the song, SING THE SONG, or sing something else.
The sheer beauty of the song and its lyrics, Scott's intensity and Seth's beautiful harmony apart, every time I come to listen which is pretty often, I'm always blown away by the double bass. Dum de dum dum, just beautiful
Yeah but John chose to change the words to the song for what ever reason. To me if you're going to cover a writers song at least sing the right words .
maybe because they expected a better cover? I've never heard of this band and definitely don't like this cover. Plus that hairy dude on the left looks like he has shat in his pants and has a very bad voice. So I guess that's why these 9 folks don't like this cover.
@@barrymoore7445 I agree with you. Some people, like Vladislav, see only negativity in the world. Instead of disagreeing with them, we should probably pity them. Great song! I just recently found out Blaze Foley wrote it after listening to John Prine's version for months now. Imagine John Prine covering your song! Wild. And now I find out the Avette Brothers cover it too. Wow! Good times! I love the Avette Brothers.
I was there 1st show they played this I was like 😱 and a year before Waits “old ‘55” their covers are freakin impressive tho this song fits Prine’s voice Foley’s version really hits hard
Prine also covered a friend of mine's song! "Baby Ruth", by John D. Wyker. Also wrote Motorcycle Mama and played in a band called "Sailcat". Baby Ruth was also covered by the great Delbert McClinton.
I actually had no idea who the Avett Brothers were when I first heard this! My brother got me into Blaze Foley and I fell in love with this song. Which lead me to this. Now I can't get enough Avett Gold! Thanks Bro!
A friend showed me a few songs around 2012, even learned one on guitar so she could sing it. Didn’t think much, then a couple years later I looked them up again and got completely hooked! Crazy how that goes
Decent enough cover of a fantastic song. I'm happy that bands are covering Blaze so maybe more people will think to look him up when they see this wasn't written by the band they're listening to. Blaze was such a wonderful talent it's a shame he left us too soon. Long live Blaze Foley!
I love the simple picking of this even though some of transitioning isn't that simple. Still haven't figured it out yet. I'm better at banjo anyway. Blaze is a legend. I'd like for the FBI to return that one studio album they confiscated. It almost sounds like someone is playing a twelve-string along with them but it's the harmonizing is perfect. Amazing cover. Much respect for using finger picks too. I can only use them when playing slide.
Chris Barbaree they harmonize like no other really... I listen to alot of different things so there are times they slip from memeory and its always a treat to be reminded...

Check out Tim Barry’s version. (Front man for punk band Avail)
