I can't really comment...every line is perfection..."weary head hung down to the floor" is an OMG line.
This song almost saved my past relationship. She introduced it to me while we were together. I didn't understand nor appreciate it at that time but after I made a grave mistake and several months later, I tried to use it to help understand her mindset before and after the break up. She was LOVE. I am HATE. I couldn't accept the love she had always offered and now I suffer for it. When we tried to amend it, I was too weak to let go and move on when I was the one who did all the wrong. Listening to this song makes me wish I would have understood it before I hurt her the first time. Idk why I strayed away but every waking moment I regret it to the fullest extent. I'm sorry Alexa. You were the one for me.
The first time I heard this was at the Mann in Philly. I've never heard a crowd so quiet in my life. He had all of us eating out of the palm of his hand and there wasn't a dry eye in the place. I was a brand new father and was so moved that it became the lullaby I sang to my son for the first year of his life. I can't think of another song as profound as this one.

Scott and Seth have a John and Paul level of creativity and effect with their songwriting and when they both sing. And that is no exaggeration. The lost art of songwriting and performing your own stuff stays alive with these guys.

Has to be one of the greatest introspective writings of all time. Has several meanings and leave it up to the listener to decide which one suits their lives best.

I lost my wife back in 2012. No she didn't die. We divorced. I can honestly say that I messed it up and lost the love of my life. When I recently discovered this song I realized The Avett brothers described the dynamic of our relationship. Unfortunately she didn't love me forever.
@Wes Weldon- Why would you hate on someone who is sharing their experience and hurts so openly? Empathy, please. How could you listen to this righteous song and not show any?

I’m so sorry you lost the love of your life, sir. My heart breaks for you, and my thoughts are with you. The fact that you realize and acknowledge your part in what caused the loss is beyond respectable, admirable, and truly commendable; it takes a lot to reflect upon one’s own mistakes, faults, flaws, wrongdoings, and so on. I blamed myself for so long for the way my last relationship ended, subsequently making me feel as though I was toxic and undeserving of a love like that. But after years of therapy, I’ve come to realize and understand that, not only does it take two to make a relationship, but it takes two to break one. It’s safe to say that one party may have played a bigger part in the destruction of it, but that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve forgiveness. The hardest part is forgiving yourself. And ghat can feel entirely impossible. But I hope you’ve learned to forgive yourself over the past five years. We all make mistakes, and we all have regrets, and we can’t always fix things, let alone take them back. But if you’ve learned from those mistakes, you can and will be better for it. You’re worthy of love and forgiveness. I just try to hold faith in there being reasons as to why things happen, and yeah, “there’s a lot of fish in the sea,” or... whatever. But a man who can love someone as hard as you seem to have loved/love is a miraculous, special and precious thing. So I hope you invite the opportunity to love and be loved into your life. Don’t push it away. Maybe something greater is around the corner, or maybe something greater has already presented itself. I know this is long, and I’m sorry for that. I just want you to know you’re not alone, and you’re not alone in feeling like Hate in this song. But the love you had isn’t gone. Love doesn’t disappear. I’m sure you’ll both love one another forever, even if it’s from afar. Take that, let it be who you are: unconditional love.

I was at this concert in 2008, Bijou Theatre, Knoxville, TN while in college. The best concert I’ve ever been to! Stayed afterwards and talked to Scott & Seth as they packed up their own gear. Great night! Thanks for the upload!

A friend turned me on to the avett brothers maybe 5 years ago..with their cover of Jim Croce..it was awesome...
It's too bad the DVD doesn't have the little screw up that he sang right before this where he had to start over. I love that...it adds to the sincerity of his whole performance. I love this though...it's basically on repeat.
