I named my daughter Brooklynn after falling in love with this song, and subsequently this band. I've been singing this song to my Brooklynn since she was still in the womb. She's 3.5 now and begs to hear "her song" all the time. She even sings along to it now.
Thank you for sharing..Now I'm crying..
@@ShemShow aww
My name is brooklyn
I hoped to have a daughter to name after this song.
My dad just passed after 25 year battle with Parkinson's. Hes from Brooklyn born and raised. I'm here bc right as I left the funeral home this came on the radio. I dont have words but thank you
I was going to get married to this song, but it didn't work out. I spent a lot of time resenting this song, and my resentment had nothing to do with the song itself. I introduced this song to my ex and we both, in our own way, fell in love with it. And even though we didn't work out, I think it's beautiful I was able to share something like this with someone. Sometimes, love doesn't work. There's too many obstacles, too many differences. That doesn't mean you stop trying, or that you give up. All it means is that, someone came along who meant a lot to you, and they left an impact on your life. And that should be cherished. And you should never give up on love.
How's things going now Andrew?
God bless you
Good attitude
I called off my own engagement last spring and I felt the same. I was so hurt and upset and couldn’t imagine how things had gone so wrong out of the blue after years together. I think this year I’m finally accepting that sometimes relationships just don’t work out but I should give future ones the same hope I gave my past one regardless and to enjoy the journey, appreciating what happened. Life is just unpredictable that way, but it’s still worth it.
Right on Andrew it's always been one of my favorites And even when it doesn't work out just trust and believe they were there at that time and place for a reason and a purpose
People come into our lives for a time a reason or a season
instead of “goodnight.” my mom and i would say “i’ll see you in the morning time.” i’ll never let that die.
“Three words that became hard to say, ‘I and Love and You.” I always liked the line poetically but I never really thought that would be me. 9 years later, now that I’ve been “dumbed down and numbed by time and age,” it applies in a way I didn’t expect. It’s not hard to say because of reluctance, it’s hard because I can’t feel it anymore…
You have to reconnect which means baring your soul which many aren't ready to do to keep the love...
This is my neighbor's favorite song, whether they like it or not.
I heard this on the way home from my High School Graduation! From there I knew that I had to face an uncertain future!
Renee Vinson hahaha!
:)
Renee~Yep, I'm sure my neighbor knows all the words, too (: Excellent comment!
LOL. I love it!
My beloved Brother Kevin just shared this with me. Here's to Kevin and the Avitt Brothers!!
Great song and my Great friend! ✌️
Such an underated band
Salvador Padilla gosh yes! They deserve so much more credit!
IKR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Salvador Padilla ...Karma that one day pop stars & rappers will have to have real jobs while those ARTISTS with lyrics like poetry will be honored.
they have 3 million views lol
nothing underrated about this band. Anyone who loves music will come into contact with this band at some point.
I and Love and You
The Avett Brothers
Load the car and write the note
Grab your bag and grab your coat
Tell the ones that need to know
We are headed north
One foot in and one foot back
But it don't pay to live like that
So I cut the ties and I jumped the tracks
For never to return
Oh, Brooklyn, Brooklyn, take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in?
My hands they shake, my head it spins
Oh, Brooklyn, Brooklyn, take me in
When at first I learned to speak
I used all my words to fight
With him and her and you and me
Ah, but it's just a waste of time
Yeah, it's such a waste of time
That woman she's got eyes that shine
Like a pair of stolen polished dimes
She asked to dance, I said it's fine
I'll see you in the morning time
Oh, Brooklyn, Brooklyn, take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in?
My hands they shake, my head it spins
Oh, Brooklyn, Brooklyn, take me in
Three words that became hard to say
I and Love and You
What you were then, I am today
Look at the things I do
Oh, Brooklyn, Brooklyn, take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in?
My hands they shake, my head it spins
Oh, Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake, my head it spins, (spins)
Oh, Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Dumbed-down and numbed by time and age
Your dreams the catch, the world the cage
The highway sets the travelers stage
All exits look the same
Three words that became hard to say
I and Love and You
I and Love and You
I and Love and You
I remember when my dad played this song for the first time. We were riding in his Jeep with the top down, and all I could think about was the beauty of the words and that is was a great driving song.
Man this is a good one. I heard this first when a band closed with it at a Leftover Salmon after party. The whole night was absolutely magical, and this was the best little night cap ever. I'm a musician, and I'm definitely adding this one to my repertoire.
This was my mom's favorite song, she died a few years ago but I still come back here every now and then for her.
I just wish I listened to this with her more often. If you have someone you love, let them know. Never take your loved ones or the time you have with them for granted.
Amen.
🌹
Thank you. Well said.
Your mom had good taste. She loves you, too
❤❤❤
"That womans got eyes that shine" as he hugs his mom
Yes-
Brilliant! Never knew about The Avett Brothers until I read the Colleen Hoover series of books. What a find.
this is exactly what brings me here too!
"The highway sets the travelers stage."
their lyrics are poetry.
The way music used to be. ❤

I was lucky enough to be in the crowd for the filming of this video, what an awesome day it was.
I sit here, in front of my computer & raise my fingers, one and two and three; I and Love and You and only WISH I had been at that show :)
Can you describe it?
Who can listen to this song without getting at least a little teary eyed? Absolutely LOVE this song.
Every time
My head it spins...
Met these guys years ago at the garage in Winston Salem when they were coming up.. they deserve every bit of their success
My children were raised on 60's music and when they grew up they introduced me to all the wonderful bands they loved. I've just been sent this great song and and another band has been added to an ever growing list of terrific music. You never get too old to enjoy new tunes, just open your heart and listen 🎶 ♥️. Thank you too all the talent out there. Keep playing, please.
Idk what music genre youre into. You feel this. You absolutely feel this song.
When I was little my mom used to listen to them while she painted, and she painted constantly. Some of my best memories are sitting and singing along with her, watching her brush move over the canvas. She hasn’t painted in years, and my god have I missed out. This has always been, and will always be, my favorite.

14 years ago I heard this song on WXPN, the Avett Brothers were playing in Austin. I was living outside Philadelphia and pretty depressed. Hearing this song confirmed my desire to move to Austin. Lived there for 12 years and returned to the northeast with a wife a dog and two cats and a lot of amazing memories.
I know this is about traveling to Brooklyn. My boyfriend showed me this song a month into dating. My name is Brooklyn and hearing my name in a song made me fall so much more in love with him. We are still together today, and he still says this song is about me ♥️ it’s absolutely amazing how people can interpret a songs meaning.
I agree! Emotions can definitely affect the way a song is interpreted. Hi from Kentucky! :)
I’m doing good! How are you?
@JaceFace75 that is so sweet, thank you ♥️ I’m sure your poetry is beautiful. I love finding hidden meanings in things. I love how everyone can see art so differently
My hands, they shake
My head, it spins
1and 4 and 3
That's such a beautiful story,many blessings.
This is the Epitome of my relationship with These Brothers. Last night Brooklyn took me in. Amen to That.
I could not have understood my path without this song.
Thank You All!
Just got a text from my aunt saying that my uncle is declining faster than we expected (cancer). I saw the title of the song at the grocery store and had to listen again. Heaven will take him in soon. 😢
"That woman she's got eyes that shine, like a pair of stolen polished dimes." That lyric gets me ever time, as well as the entire SONG!!
Hello Peggy, how are you?
I'm not dead, I just died
My favorite lyric ever 💛
🤪😂
This song is like a constant pain in my heart,i feel so much,it almost hurt but I am in love with this song.
I used to watch these guys play Downtown Greenville at the attic when they were in college they were great then
I miss my Mom.
I miss my Dad.
I miss the love of my life.
I miss our kids.
Sad, lonely, all but defeated.
I'm sorry you're suffering...maybe you'll see this and know there ate people that care...hope you're having a better day!
Take that loss and amplify it in new love . Don’t wait to find the three words
I miss my parents so much it’s a physical pain. I’m suffering with you. My kids are almost grown & I miss my little babies/toddlers. It IS SAD & so lonely. Sending you love & light.
Hugging you from here. Hug Hug Hug (some extras to tide you over)
@melindacheatham7527 You're very sweet! Thanks Melinda!
Well-done, stripped-down allegorical tale of basic human emotions. What the Avett Brothers do best..
Don't grieve me ... Ls
"Tell the ones who need to know" *lovingly boops a cat*
I was born in Cuba. Everyone has a dream over there, “heading north”. This song breaks me every time I listen to it.
I am from Canada and we all have dreams over there. I hope your finding your dreams.
I like your comment ❤️

Welcome.
Can't believe in the era of modern entertainment industry, this kind of music still exist. My heart skipped a beat when the first words and melodies of this song started. Such a nice song
Cẩm Vân Phan Check out Ben Howard and some of The Head and the Heart's older albums
I love the head and the heart. You could also check out The Lumineers.
Man I'm floored ! In this day of garbage music- I found a gem 💎
Oh dear check out Gregory Ilan Isakov’s Words also
I had her, let her go, met her 22 years later. Flames still burned but I left it too late. She sent me this song when I asked her how she felt. Us men are just dopes. Sorry Dee
Sorry jana. Maybe in the next life
Go get her if you really want her. Grand gesture?
Elena, I won't blow up 4 people's marriages with 6 children between them for a 22 year old bad mistake, she lives on a different continent and out of her life I will stay. I don't stay in communication, couldn't function day to day if I did. Now the only grand gesture I can offer is to leave her rear her kids in peace, she is ultimately happy and I guess that's her best gift she can give back to me. 'i won't be held responsible for my actions' if we meet later on in life in a retirement home I told her. She said 'ditto, world can go whistle then'. Anyway gestures grand or little, it is what it is, can't stop where my mind dreams. It transcends everything practical and the 5000 km's

And bad for who you are. Dont let regret drive you. Change what you want to change and nourish the good growth you know exists within you. Love your kids and show it the best way you can. Do nothing you wouldnt do in front of your parents, and simply live life knowing that worrying, getting upset, or angry is just a waste of your own energy. Life to short to be so serious.
@@harrymurray247 I get it. That is a wonderful and selfless gift you are giving her if she is truly happy. I wish you happiness as well and hopefully you’ll meet someone else who makes you feel alive like that. There are billions of people on Earth! Best to you! 🌍
First time hearing this tune.....here in the rockies still a little bit of winter ❤
I really believe I'm an optimistic person...... But with all this darkness I seem to hear and sense in music, it is so wonderful to experience The Light in rare music like this.
What a fantastic song, I think 🤔💬 it's beautiful ❤️💐
my dad used to play this all the time. I was always reading the same comics when the "Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in" played. It was 10am on a Saturday morning. I miss those times
This is my very first time hearing about the Avett brothers
Found this song in a Movie I just watched “Breakwater” and I loved this tune so much that I looked it up and discovered how amazing ❤this guys are. If you’re listening to this right now (2024) Give a thumbs up ❤👍🏾. Showing love from GHANA 🇬🇭
Moved from Tennessee to NewYork. Whitney Thacker, thank you for some of the best years of our life!!!!! Wish you well!!!
This song is so soulful. God truly has blessed them with musical talent:)!
Amen!
you are now listening to the beatles of modern folk
I come back to it every year on my birthday. I moved out of a place I called home seven years ago to find a home. I finally found it in a person, and three words became easy to say “I and love and you”
🥺❤️
I simply adore the brothers doing what is right for themselves. The music is sublime.
The soundtrack of Clay and Sara's short and epic love story makes the whole thing so much more painful, this song and Willie Nelson trigger tears from the first note. Burying the ring was the final straw, my heart...
Dumbed down and numbed by time and age.
Your dreams that catch the world the cage.
The highway sets the traveler's stage.
All exits look the same.
Whilst scrolling the comments, I hit this one in perfect sync to it being sung.
This is my tribute to DJ Steve Wright, who sadly passed away today. He played this song on his show one afternoon, and I was instantly hooked, Superb song, thanks, RIP SW 🙏
What a beautiful song. How have I never heard of it before today?!
My son used to sing this to his daughter as a very young toddler. I did not know this or the band or song. He passed away at 37 from an unproven incident ! I do not know how this in so many ways describes him and her thru his shortened life! We played this for her at almost 16 yrs old and she cried and cried. Only two songs affected her this way. She is very private and she could not hold back. I as his Mom loved it as it described him so well with shaking hands and a mind that spins ! He was scared when his son was born that he would never please people involved but his daughter and we were unconditional in his love for them. He has been gone over a year now and it feels like a nightmare for us but we know he is in a better place but we are still thinking of how to pursue this with anyone of power to even care. So sad that there are people that are so lazy and uncaring to do their job. We had a Life Celebration and so many people came he was very loved He was so smart, in gifted and talented was a trained carpenter and millwright but had a Gypsy lifestyle loved people of all kinds a loved his children . Thank you forever for this song for her it will stay with her and I forever!
So sorry for your loss. He sounds like a beautiful soul.❤
Such a simple but beautiful message. Love this song.
I heard the song from one tree hill. I decided to check it out here
just heard this for the first time. i have a big lump in my throat. This cuts deep 👌
I just saw them live and fell in love with the crowd saying this... I just can't let this damn song go
Your songs always give the nostalgia, my mom always plays these songs when were driving far. we dont travel much anymore. Your songs will always shine a spark in me. you have my heart ❤️
I heard this as a middle schooler over a decade ago. My grandpa died around that time. Strange time of life. Song meant a lot more to me then than it does now, but it’s still something I distinctly remember.
I can’t do it with this song right now! There are times I can and love it but right now the tears flowI have not heard those words from you in so long, not a hug, not an indication that you even ever think of me, miss me, or that I even exist. I do not reach out because I have tried to give you space and time, but time goes on and then I don’t know what to say to you and when we speak I try to honestly answer the questions you have full knowing of the disappointment I will here in your voice. Fixing things is hard work and does occur on other’s timetables which can be hard to understand but our choices are not always the choices of others and we are not here to judge but to seek to understand the best
we can.
They are a reality in a world of entertainment built with smoke and mirrors, and when they play, the common man can break the mirrors and blow the smoke away, so that all that’s left behind is the unwavering beauty of the songs. That’s the commotion, that’s the celebration, and wherever The Avett Brothers are tonight, that’s what you’ll find.
+Tracy Amason Simmons I can't say that I have ever heard a description more eloquently worded that describes my music sensibilities. Thank you for your poetry. There aren't many like The Avett's who capture that description....
+Tracy Amason Simmons - beautiful!

Thank you, I stated how I felt. I saw these guys in concert and there is such a truth and raw emotion in their performances...I don't know who could listen to them and not feel something. :-)
+Tracy Amason Simmons You are absolutely correct. I have loved them since first listen and that love has only deepened and broadened since then. Like any profound truth, the revelations keep becoming apparent. I have been an audiophile my entire life but *never* have I ever been so absolutely *in love* with any music and those who perform it than these ... Words seem to lose their meaning, but you nailed it. Thank you for taking the time to share those lovely thoughts with the rest of us. Namaste
+Tracy Lynn Amason that was beautiful what you said! Their music makes me cry, laugh, and just want to appreciate people more!

Hello Ainsley, how are you!
Very cool😊
I was fortunate to be introduced to the Avett brothers music a few weeks ago, by a good friend who took me to their concert at the Murat Theater(downtown Indianapolis). I came away from the concert thinking how could I have lived so long without the Avent Brothers music? So very unique and so very beautiful with lyrics so relevant. love this song, and all of their music.
Anne....my sentiments exactly...How had I never heard of them sooner...exquisite.
I will always be thankful for The Avert Bros. They got me through the toughest part of my life and helped me become the man I am. They're that powerful. I cried when I saw them live back in 2011. One of the best live bands out there. My boys. 💕 I'll always hold you guys in my heart. Thank you Avetts.

I miss the love of my life ❤
My language art teacher said she was putting up her Christmas tree and she heard a song that reminded her of someone in my period, she couldn’t find it but I had to go to her class during study hall and she said she found it, she played it for me. My name is Brooklyn. None the less is started to tear up
Over 8 years ago my friend bought me tickets to a concert for them in Indianapolis. So young at the time I had no idea.. maybe 16.
I miss you Jimmy aka stoop nutz. See you in another life if not this one brother.
Most people only like this kinda music when they've been through so many things.
Well you got that right.
Have you ever heard "Dear McCracken" by Bug Hunter? I highly suggest navigating there and finding another song that you truly enjoy more when you've been through some stuff.
That cello just nails me to the spot.
I prayed for peace. Mine has chose Trial. Mr Never-can-admit his humanity. I'll suit up & show up as requested. 😢
I was lucky enough to see them in concert last year and watching them preform this was just amazing, they sounded so genuine and this will be an experience I'll never forget.
They play this at every show and it sounds amazing and fresh each time... even though they've probably performed it a thousand times at this point.
These guys , this song (like most they write) got me through some dark day’s! God bless them and there work.
January 2014. Nokia Music lead me to strange places. One of them being this. Black clouds all over the sky. I've got my black jacket and jeans on. Skullcandy headphones on. I visit the same place everyday, but it feels like going someplace different everytime. Life wasn't best, but I'd love to go back to that place someday. Maybe in the very end, once again.
I think this is what my son refers to as "Sad Dad Rock"
+James Murphy well your son's crazy... this is what real music is all about
The best sad dad rock
He ain't wrong. A person needs years and years of love, loss, success and failure to really feel music like this. Great Dad rock!
NO WAY!!! SAME!! Sad dad songs

Colleen Hoover, I love you, I cried like a baby reading your book when Caulder made that poem, thanks for that.

Year after years and I still come back to this song. Pure bliss!
2020, and I am hearing this brings me back. Wow.
Im listening to this masterpiece after 5 years ish . It reminds me alot of the good old days . I just cant express how overwhelmed im feeling right now while listening to this song after years. Im just in awe for real.
Jasinda Wilder brought me here. Definitely recommend her book, Falling Into You. Warning though, it's incredibly sad, but a perfect example of losing someone and figuring out how to live with that pain.
I am reading this book now and this brought me here

Seeing and hearing these guys play at red rocks will be a forever lasting moment in my life.
Still one of my favorites!! Love the music, harmony and of course the words.
WOW! These guys are great! Just heard them tonight for first time. Will be purchasing their music for sure. God Bless such artists.
Your music touches my heart, mind and soul. So thank you guys that you share with us the deepest thoughts and feelings.
Another night with the Avetts last night in Berkeley - one of the last bands where the music really matters, they perform it like it means something, and makes you feel like everything is gonna be OK. Thank you.
Well said Steve !

My son sent me a CD of I and Love and You. First I've heard of these fellows. I and Love and You. So glad.
I and Love and This Song.
One of my favorite bands of all time. Greetings from Brazil!
My parents used to play this album non stop when I was little and I loved every song. I never knew what the band was called. Now at 16, 13 some odd years later, I’ve found the Avett Brothers. I just wanna say thanks mom and dad for letting me love all these songs all over again!
I'm 59 years old and my daughter showed them to me. I am OBSESSED!
This album came out 10 years ago- maybe a different Avett Brother's album you're thinking of?
@@saraevans8371 There are 13 year olds loving these guys, I've seen in the comments.
One of the greatest songs ever written..
"That women she's got eyes that shinnnne...like a pair of stolen, polished dimes. She asked to dance I said it's fine...I'll see you in the morning time."
If you are unaware, definitely research about dimes in the eyes of the dead. I have lived this song all my life, and I have felt this way since that long ago moment when first "I went north". It's true: "One foot in and one foot back; It don't pay to live like that." Every day I fear the reason that will bring me back. My mother understands. She is my guru. XO
@@notyrmom5698 I think they just meant that, "That woman she's got eyes that shine, like a pair of stolen, polished dimes." Like...beautiful, lovely eyes that shine.
This is the second generation of counting crows long December. Love it.
