@@going.pottie how did you find the dh sections on your gravel bike? I had 3 blowouts on the dh flint sections on my mb, can’t imagine doing them on a gravel bike!
@@going.pottie well that would have stopped the pinch punctures but I bet your bum wasn’t thanking you 😂 I can’t imagine hurtling down some of those gnarly downhills on a gravel bike!
Much more useful video than the endless ones that just show the road ahead as people cycle - the route map, the ease of wild camping, the refuelling stops makes it a video that helps others plan their own trip, rather than just being an endless ‘I was here’ record of a persons trip. Thanks
Fantastic video Pottie! My favourite parts were south of Farnham - Bourne Woods, Hankley Common, Thursley Common. And then the ride from Salisbury past Stonehenge and across the MOD land towards Marlborough.
I’m originally from Hampshire but now reside in Central Europe . I'm. determined to return and ride this in 2023 as part of my 70th birthday celebrations :-)
Aw thanks Mart. The ridgeway was incredible with the wind our back. Whilst we were doing it someone set the record for doing it anticlockwise something crazy like 17 hours and into the headwind!
Great video. Just the info I needed. Its on my list of trips to do this or next year so hopefully I will. Possibly alone so might be interesting! Looking at camping gear. Its a minefield. Thanks again
Really good, video impressive not getting any punctures until the end without tubeless! I thought the SDW and the ridgeway would be muddy this time of year but look like they are in great condition.
I usually ride only about 30 miles a week. But I've planned to ride this route in June this year 2022. And I'm a smoker. So it's going be interesting to say the least. Will be doing this on my hard tail solo. And wild camping along the route. If anyone is thinking about doing this mammoth ride I'll be starting June 1st hope I'll see some peeps along the way.
Just got back from doing it over 4 days. What a ride! Definitely has to be on the tick list for any off road cyclist. Found it tough, there wasn't a day without a hill to push up! People often deliberate over what is the best bike to take. There is no clear answer as the range of terrain is so varied there is no definitive answer.
Great advice and video. You can get drop seat bib shorts which make comforter stops easier :) We are planning on completing the King Alfred Way this year. We are upgrading our bikes and getting our kit together, but we have done a section of the Ridgeway to work out how far we may be able to travel in a day. The South Downs way is challenging, we did sections of it last year.
Thanks so much, I did not know drop seat bib shorts existed! Another thing added to the kit list 😂 I hope you have a fantastic time. Are you doing it on a gravel or mtb?
Yeah just so unlike last year when we had the headwave in May! I was out on some of the KAW at the weekend, definitely a lot more challenging and slow going with the mud - still beautiful though! Have a lot of respect for anyone that has done it in the last couple of weeks 🙌
Hey....sorry if its somewhere else in the comments. Love the video...absolutely loved it, and am in Stockbridge on the main route through the trail. Can I ask please the tent you used for wildcamping? I have a small popup tent without poles, but wonder how you dealt with a) the tent and b) spreading the kit across your gear. Sorry...questions galore.
Great little video thanks guys. Planning to do this next month as my 1st foray into bike packing. Have had great fun researching and buying all the kit now I am chomping at the bit to get going. I was just curious as to the gearing you used on your gravel bike for the hills. I am currently using a 34 tooth front chainring on the front and a 32 on the back which so far has got me up anything I have ridden both on and off road but fully loaded will be a different story. Any recommendations welcome.
Amazing, it's a wicked route! That's the exact same setup as I have. Mostly the bits I had to push was due to the terrain (sandy, or big loose chunks of Flint) rather than the gradient, the majority of it was cyclable though. Would love to hear how you get on!
Great video, I’m intending to do this in May over 3 or 4 days. Was you following the formal route? Were the detours long and/ or difficult to navigate/ work out? Thanks
Aw that's fantastic. We used the official route off the cycling UK website. I've read a couple of other people have had the same issue and they said the GPS was off because the route was designed on komoot and their devices weren't compatible with komoot..? 🤷♀️ If youre the same it might be worth trying the 'ride with GPS' route. You never go far wrong but it's just frustrating. And the detours were pretty easy, one was where the route plotted us through a footpath on private land south of Farnham and the other was military flag was up but I don't think that's very common. Hope you have a fantastic time! 😊
Hello! This was super helpful - thank you. In the video you mentioned there were plenty of good spots to wild camp. Were there any particularly bad spots, or anything to look out for? It's always a bit nerve-wracking wondering if there'll be anywhere to pitch up. Thank you!
Thanks for watching. If possible I prefer to find wooded areas, normally look up if there's any small footpaths and set up somewhere just off that. Not always possible but I usually don't set up until its basically dark and its always been OK... Just don't plan your camp by the military area near sailsbury plains! 😂😂 I've heard of other people camping on the ridgeway but depending on the weather it could be quite exposed up there. Would love to hear how you get on!
A nice short video thank you what type of tyre did you both use ? I have a MTB but on largely clay ground suffer from the odd puncture and wish to get a guard strip or different tyres
Great video! :-) We are planning to ride it in 3 days, probably starting from Marlborough. Did you split the GPS route into three sections or just load onto the Garmin as a single route file? Thanks :-)
Thanks so much for watching Mike! We just kept the route as one and knew roughly where we would be stopping. What gps computer do you have? Hope the weather gods and you have an amazing time!
@@going.pottie Thanks so much for the response :-) I have a Garmin 520 and the intention was the take the whole GPX file and split it into three separate daily rides but looking at the forums, it seems as though many folks just use a single route file (as you guys did). Sure. We started on the ridgeway so the stops wouldn't work out if you start at in Winchester but stops were aquatic.serious.outermost and tilts.purple.shepherdess Have a great time!!
@@going.pottie fantastic. The Surrey one might well be useful. I am going to start middle to late in the day on the first date from Winchester and try and get north of Salisbury for the night
Thanks for the video, a great guide. Was the "no cyclists, walkers only" sign in the Farnham area ? It's my local area and it looks like a sign at Moor Park, Farnham.
Aw thank you so much for the kind comment 😊 Yes I'm pretty sure that was it, it was much of a detour though. Just a little frustrating because we were pretty knackered by that point 😂
@@going.pottie To be fair, that section is a footpath and isn't actually on the offical KAW route. But the officious little man who put the signs up is a real cyclist hater!
