Probably the best explanation of how to improve neck pain I've seen, many thanks! Have been experiencing neck pain on most longer rides and will be looking at these tweaks asap. 👍
I got the same feedback when I was doing my bike fitting session (in Poland) before my second ultra marathon (540km 80h, 10 000m up). It was such a surprise to me that one of the feedback was to throw away my 46cm bars for 44 or even 42cm. Because of the handlebar bag I stayed with 44cm. Compared to my previous "home-made" bike fitting and 46cm bars, the benefits of going narrower was mindblowing. Thank you for this video! Now I'm trying to follow your steps to get the MTB fit right - without spending money for now. If I lived where you work, I would definitely pay for your fitting session.
That is from the Max. Thank you for a great video response to my e-mail, I very enjoyed it! I wanted to donate, because this video helped me a lot to deal with my neck pain and because it was that simple!
We tackled assembling the bike as a family project. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxzg0clhbtRf2gGxPkVETFKJJKGqdsorQu The package is heavy, but I have 2 teen boys that were able to move it. The written instructions were great- we didn't need to watch the videos, but it was good knowing that the option was there if we needed it. After we were able to get it set up, the boys each rode 3 miles and I rode 8 and the bike stayed quiet. The display is easy to reset, and you can put it on whichever setting you are using (time, distance, calories, etc). I will say that my butt is a little sore from the seat, but that could be because I haven't rode in a while. While it is comfortable for me, it was not comfortable with the seat position for my friend (could not move the seat back far enough and he slightly looked like a kid riding a tricycle that he had outgrown). He also said that the seat hurt his manly parts. We are going to look for a different seat that will be compatible with this bike for him.I did purchase the Wahoo Cadence sensor and strapped it to the crank of one of the pedals. This will sync with my Apple Watch, iPhone and will import data in to my Health app. Wahoo does have other sensors available other than cadence. I can also keep either my phone or my iPad on the display and they both feel pretty secure.
Scott, you are most excellent! :-) I've been cycling over 45 years, now at 68 years old with arthritis in three of my neck vertebrae. Before Covid I was going to the gym with a trainer, and on my own. Squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, light weight, higher reps, along with a regimen of stretches and ball exercises. I quit the gym during Covid and now the neck pain and headaches have returned. My touring bike cockpit is set-up old man style with a short reach, and 10mm drop to bar from saddle height. Time to get that cross training with weights back on track!!! Great videos, thanks!
I've watched a whole slue of videos lately on bike-fitting and this is one of most practical ones I've come across with actionable tips and information you can use to quickly isolate problems with your current bike fit... so useful, thx!
Came across this yesterday (thanks algorythm) and tried it out on a 70k ride.. the difference is huge! Not only does my saddle feel more comfortable, my neck is better (although still fatigued near the end, might be that my handlebars are too wide) I also felt like I could pedal with more power and sit in the drops/90 degree on the hoods with more ease. No clue why I thought I had to rotate my pelvis backwards before, I thought it'd make sense for my sitbones to sit properly on the saddle.. But this makes so much more sense now. Thanks Scott :)
Thanks for the info. After dealing with several neck surgeries and severe neck pain while riding, I started exploring recumbent bikes. That was the solution for me. I can ride pain free, regardless of the amount of miles.
Coach, this was SUPER useful for me. I do have neck pain (actually my levator, scap and traps) are on fire 20 or so miles in from looking up and I'm constantly stretching my neck from being in the crunched up position.
I'm glad I landed on this video before spending and hr listening to other people talk about neck pain. This was insightful and will be using these tips to see along with strengthening my neck and spending less time sitting down like a phleb
ive only come across this video, and ive learnt so much, ive had many fits on road bikes and then bought them after being told that is the size for you , and NO it wasn't so I sold it. Great video, Im saving it for reference from someone who makes sense !
I actully tried the hands out roll the hip and see where my hands rest on.....middle of my fingers were resting on the hoods....possibly need a shorter stem.....i Do get back pain when pushing hard up steep hills for any longer than 5 - 7 mins.....Maybe this is why. Thank you Coach awesome info that ive never heard anyone explaining before
Well, after 40 years of last bike ride, I got the bikes I had as a kid, falcon,in mint original condition, sorted it out for the road, got on it, up and down the gears just like I'd never been off it, never thought ever about riding position, now at 56 I think it's time to adere to this lesson,, cheers for the info👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much. After watching your video last night I just got back from my morning ride. No neck pain, no numb hands and overall the ride was much easier. 70 yo btw.
OHHH! Super video! I just bought my first speed bike and I didn't know why I have pain in my neck. The stem too long. You teached me how it should to work. Thank you!
Great video - especially the tip about positioning on the saddle - i.e. not sitting or collapsing backwards but instead sit 'up' and roll the pelvis forward. I've tried this tip during my last couple of rides and it's really helped my back position - meaning a bit reduction in aches and pains.
@@BulletproofCycling You are very kind!! Since you covered saddle to the bar interaction using core muscle, I would love to see this form when you start pedaling. If the saddle position is wrong relation to feet position, it would be really hard to achieve this core stability as you shown in the video anyway. So if you have any drills or tips please!!
Wow, thank you very much, excellent explanation! Just what I needed TO LEARN, and I am about to go out for a bike ride. I will pay attention to my posture today. I hate to think that I am sabotaging my favorite activity due to my incorrect posture. I have changed the handlebar (from road to straight and road again) to my measured size. I have also considered changing the stem. Maybe it is just me and my posture.
Thanks a lot for this, reallly! I'm new into bikes and I've bought a Diverge one year ago. I'm 174cm height and I was pretty sure my size was 54 but the shop owner delivered a 56 and said it was my size. Today, I suffer a lot from neck, cervical pain... Your video was the confirmation that my bike is too big for me! Everything makes sense. I will do a professional bike fit next month to see what he says and what can be done. I wouldn't want to sell the bike :(
Hi, this video has been a great help to me. I cycled for 2 months and after every session my neck was really sore. I measured my reach with the technique you showed in the video and it was perfect, but I was putting all the weight on the front of the bike. After watching this video I have now ridden 3 times without any pain in my neck, thank you very much. Greetings from Argentina. 🚲
A very big THANK, to you, sir, for your most valuable and important and helpful advice how to cure the neck-pain when cycling! Best regards from Sweden!💯❤👍👍👍
A really good explanation of posture issues. Delivered in a light-hearted way but none the less dealing with a common issues with actual remedies. Some good tips. Would recommend viewing of this video. I will look at the next video showing exercises.
This is great. I’ve been dealing with neck, shoulder and low back pain and off my bike for 3 weeks now. Doing some PT and feeling better. I’m looking forward to your exercises to add to my PT program.
Hi Scott This has helped me so much. Your coaching as well. I've seen so many gains in the last 3 weeks from watching your tips on RUclips. Thank you so much.
So nicely explained, I’ve had three bike fits over the years for this very reason and nobody has explained it this way. Even now after ten years of regular cycling, normal around 6k miles a year I still get a sore neck after the first 40 miles, time to start doing some checks myself after watching this video . Thanks 😊
Amazing what a transformation such a simple action as rotating the hips properly has made. Riding is vastly more comfortable and enjoyable. Chapeau mate 👍
Interesting, suffering from cervical spondylosis I have given up curly bars and just ride with flat bars and a higher shorter stem, last bike I bought was 53cm as opposed to 55cm and with some practical knowledge of A and P can now do most rides up 60 + miles without issue, wish I had seen this before as it all makes sense and giving me a desire to get roadie bars again. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for helping me with my shoulder pain. I had terrible pain in my shoulder from me reach being too far. I had moved my seat back to help my legs but that threw my reach out too far. I'm waiting for a shorter stem to arrive then I can move my seat back and have everything where it should be.
Thank you for these bike fitting tips! The numbness in my hands is a growing concern as it happens often. Hopefully I can dial in my bike using this information.
Very helpful, thanks! Being hesitant first I swapped my 44cm drop bars to 47 having a shoulder width of 42. Never felt this comfortable on my Gravel Bike.
I tried this and a) I was amazed that a bike that always felt too long now feels fine and b) the effect on my back was the same as I have felt when following the Mackenzie "Treat your own back" method, which is a double bonus. And yes it did make the pressure on my hands less and I can use the piano fingers on the bar. Still early doors and I found I lapsed when pushing hard or as I felt tired or was fed up with the rain. Thanks. Such a simple practical suggestion.
Hi Scott, I’ve done sport all my life and are “late” to the bike scene but know this will be easier on the ageing body body😆 My first trip out resulted in the neck pain you described and I know Now i collapsed in my saddle!! Thank you SO MUCH for this information and also as to the positioning of the handle bars. Loads I need to check and correct but appreciate the education
Hi Ron, lovely of you to share your experience. Please feel free to keep in touch as you progress. I have been involved in cycling all my life but only got onto RUclips at the start of the pandemic. Still not sure how to fully maximise it but I enjoy engaging with fellow cyclists and sports/fitness enthusiasts - stay safe my friend 👍
Hi Scott, Confession 😁: I qualify for the freak body category - broad shoulders and nuckles that drags on the ground. With this in mind my feedback on the back of the "sore neck" video above. Adjusting my pelvis immediately changed my posture and positioned my head in the right position. I also have a tenancy to roll my shoulders forward so need to concentrate on keeping the shoulders in position. My biggest surprise however was me doing the zombie drill. I could barely touch the handle bar!! Had to move my seat max forward to compensate. Will need to buy a new stem that is shorter. Thank you again for the info. This has spared me a lot of issues that would have come to bite me down the line.
Engaging, knowledgable and really informative.I've saved this so I can check my set up. Other than pelvic tilt I reckon I have all the faults outlined! No wonder I get numb hand and neck ache. Thanks for producing this video.
Great vid. Can make 60 miles before sore palms kick in , will try All these tips for next sortie. Cycle event coming up soon so hopefully will sort this 60 something year old out and help push out the extra 50 miles in total comfort.
Wow! A LOT of useful information in this terrific video! I'm looking forward to watching it carefully many more times and applying it to experiment with my position. Thanks for the great video! (If I weren't on the other side of the Atlantic from you I'd definitely be dropping in for a consult.)
This is really helpful, thank you! I have been having neck pain and tension headaches, although it's not while I'm biking but later that day or the next day. I already have stenosis in my cervical spine so it can turn into a 3-day headache. Instead of biking less, sounds like I need a bike fitting, and to test out how I sit on the seat!!
The point you make about your palm landing on the tops of the hoods is invaluable….I’ve not seen any other bike fitter mention that….I’ve always suspected my bike is too long and I’ve tried different length stems and inline seat posts but now I have an actual physical way to see if my bike is in fact too long. I didn’t know much about bikes when I bought mine so unfortunately I went by the manufacturer size chart as many people will do…it seems to me from comments I’ve seen on various cycling channels that manufactures quite often suggest bikes that are far too large.
Thanks Michael - the palms tip is one of my own techniques - I have lots more to share 👍👍👍 you would be amazed at the various size differences across manufacturers (even when you are looking at same size bikes) Hopefully I can help you with your set up 👍
@@BulletproofCycling I’d love to book a fit with you but you’re 600 miles away so maybe a bit far. This is my first ‘proper’ bike as I only got into cycling a little over a year ago so I have no previous bikes to compare to, I have no idea if my bike is the correct size , and I don’t know how it’s supposed to feel, I just bought a 58 because the website says at 190cm tall I should ride a 58…I’ve managed to get it relatively comfortable by shortening the stem length by 10mm and going from a 25mm setback seatpost to an inline one…..but that just tells me that perhaps my bike is 35mm too long. As for it being a 58..there ain’t a tube on that bike that is 58cm!
What a great description, having watched loads and learnt a lot from various people that seem as knowledgeable as yourself none have explained quite as well and as clean as you. 👍
Love this channel. Great education for me, a guy who used to mountain bike in the Norther Utah mountains. Not a superstar, but enjoyed the outdoors and the burn. Now, just a simpleton riding flip flops shorts and tee shirt along the beach. Don't care for all the clipped shoe and tight shorts/jersey stuff. Been there done that. It was fun, but hey, a rule should be made that if your gut touches your thigh while pedaling, make adjustments. :oP Anyway, thanks for this channel. Really outstanding stuff.
Just watched the video about neck pain and the video about fore and aft. Great information thanks you're helpingloads of us. I gave it a like and will watch again to make sure I've got everything right. I've picked up a Cervelo S2 it's old but an upgrade from the trek aluminium bike I was using. Both bikes are 58 but the Cervelo is a longer bike. I've still got the old trek and checked both bikes and with the square arms drop down method I'm only around middle of my fingers on the hoods. The Cervelo is running a 100mm stem and bars look shorter than the trek bars from stem to hoods length. I read in another comment 60mm stem is the shortest you would go. But I just don't think that would be enough. The seat is nearly all the way forward on the Cervelo in order to get a similar fore aft position as the Trek. I'm 187cm tall and 88cm inseam without shoes. Surely a 56cm would be too small for me? Perhaps there's something I've missed with the square arms drop down test?
@@BulletproofCycling thanks coach for your reply. I've never had a bike fit perhaps I should try. I've struggled with neck pain while riding since I've started riding more. I changed the position of the cleats and raised the nose of the saddle which made a huge difference. When you mentioned that one of the common issues is a bike that's too long I checked and both bikes were too long. I have ordered a 60mm stem and I'll see how I go. Thanks for the great work
Suffering from neck spasms since November. My girlfriend suspects (and pushes) that this was due to me regularly cycling/bike commuting (she doesn't want me cycling cause she thinks it's dangerous). Thanks for this! Looking forward to doing these after my recovery.
Wow Thanks Sr, cycling since September, I know that I need to get to use to the new position but I have been moving the. Seat f and backw, any way I'll try your arm tips, I let you know tomorrow after my ride
I also moved the seat back because the handles were too far but couldn't move them. I own a Giant hybride bike. I'm not a super cyclist don't own a super road bike. But I love taking my bike for shopping groceries and commute to work. Thank you for these great tips. Love your accent. Natalie from Canada🇨🇦
Thanks coach, really well explained and easy to understand. I got a Kickr bike over Christmas and with no road bike measurements to go off I’ve gone off the advised mm’s from kickr which is your inseam mm. The past week I’ve noticed some tightness in my neck/ traps and shoulders so I’ll have a tinker around before tomorrows ride and hopefully the feeling will ease
This is the only dude among hundreds on RUclips who explained this so clearly

Being hesitant first I swapped my 44cm drop bars to 47 having a shoulder width of 42.
Never felt this comfortable on my Gravel Bike.
👍👍👍👍
I tried this and a) I was amazed that a bike that always felt too long now feels fine and b) the effect on my back was the same as I have felt when following the Mackenzie "Treat your own back" method, which is a double bonus. And yes it did make the pressure on my hands less and I can use the piano fingers on the bar. Still early doors and I found I lapsed when pushing hard or as I felt tired or was fed up with the rain.
Thanks. Such a simple practical suggestion.
Thanks for sharing Martin. Glad to assist 👍
Hi Scott,
I’ve done sport all my life and are “late” to the bike scene but know this will be easier on the ageing body body😆
My first trip out resulted in the neck pain you described and I know Now i collapsed in my saddle!!
Hi Scott,
Confession 😁: I qualify for the freak body category - broad shoulders and nuckles that drags on the ground.
@@rontait6013 😂😂😂 welcome to the club
well explained and implemented on my bikes aspecially when riding on power trainer. Many thanks pal!!!
Thank you 🙏
Gosh, the best I've seen on this subject. Thanks mate 👍
Thank you 🙏
Absolute best explanation on the web! Thanks man, cheers!
Thank you 🙏
Thank you, awesome information. I feel better understanding that I can fix problems easily with the correct position and strength training. Cheers ~
Thank you 🙏
Engaging, knowledgable and really informative.I've saved this so I can check my set up. Other than pelvic tilt I reckon I have all the faults outlined! No wonder I get numb hand and neck ache. Thanks for producing this video.
❤️👍👍👍👍
Great video, best explanation, you are so right . Going to watch this a few times
Glad it was helpful!
thanks alot had problems Like that Always after doing bike ride, trying that to see results.😃
Thanks 🙏
Great vid. Can make 60 miles before sore palms kick in , will try All these tips for next sortie. Cycle event coming up soon so hopefully will sort this 60 something year old out and help push out the extra 50 miles in total comfort.
Thanks. Well done 👍
Great advice. Really suffering on longer rides with nerve pain in neck at hinge point. Think I might need shorter stem. Always had weak glutes.
Hope it helps Paul
Wow! A LOT of useful information in this terrific video! I'm looking forward to watching it carefully many more times and applying it to experiment with my position. Thanks for the great video! (If I weren't on the other side of the Atlantic from you I'd definitely be dropping in for a consult.)
👍👍👍👍
This is really helpful, thank you! I have been having neck pain and tension headaches, although it's not while I'm biking but later that day or the next day. I already have stenosis in my cervical spine so it can turn into a 3-day headache. Instead of biking less, sounds like I need a bike fitting, and to test out how I sit on the seat!!
👍👍👍❤️
Awesome video! I had 3 levels of fusion in my neck and lately ive been experiencing neck and shoulder fatigue
Inspirational 👍👍👍
awesome explanation .especially for newbies.....
Glad you think so!
Thanks Michael - the palms tip is one of my own techniques - I have lots more to share 👍👍👍 you would be amazed at the various size differences across manufacturers (even when you are looking at same size bikes)
Hopefully I can help you with your set up 👍
@@BulletproofCycling I’d love to book a fit with you but you’re 600 miles away so maybe a bit far.
@@Barrygee I am developing virtual bike fitting service. I have done it with a few riders in USA and it has worked well. Watch this space 👍
@@BulletproofCycling I’ll be interested to see how that goes.
What a great description, having watched loads and learnt a lot from various people that seem as knowledgeable as yourself none have explained quite as well and as clean as you. 👍
That is very kind of you. I have been involved in cycling since the 80’s but only recently joined RUclips. Thanks for engaging in my content 👍
Thanks for the clarity!
👍🙏🙏🙏
Love this channel. Great education for me, a guy who used to mountain bike in the Norther Utah mountains. Not a superstar, but enjoyed the outdoors and the burn. Now, just a simpleton riding flip flops shorts and tee shirt along the beach. Don't care for all the clipped shoe and tight shorts/jersey stuff. Been there done that. It was fun, but hey, a rule should be made that if your gut touches your thigh while pedaling, make adjustments. :oP Anyway, thanks for this channel. Really outstanding stuff.
❤️❤️👍👍👍👍
Thank you. One of the best and most helpful videos I’ve ever seen for road cycling.
I would suggest you use your own knowledge of how the old bike has felt. If you have never had reach issues then there is no problem.
Thanks for the great work
Fantastic video, Coach! Thank you!!
Thank you
Thanks from Argentina. I think this May be fix my headache after riding too long. Ill give a try.
Scott, you are amazing :) love your channel :) thank you for sharing
Wow - thank you ❤️🙏👍
Great video, great learning. I learned a lot from you sir.
Thank you so much!
Thank you Asley 👍
Great video. I learned loads. I wish you well. Thank you.
Thank you 🙏
Suffering from neck spasms since November. My girlfriend suspects (and pushes) that this was due to me regularly cycling/bike commuting (she doesn't want me cycling cause she thinks it's dangerous). Thanks for this! Looking forward to doing these after my recovery.
Good luck with recovery 👍👍👍
Wow
Thanks Sr, cycling since September, I know that I need to get to use to the new position but I have been moving the. Seat f and backw, any way I'll try your arm tips, I let you know tomorrow after my ride
Thanks for sharing 👍
I also moved the seat back because the handles were too far but couldn't move them. I own a Giant hybride bike. I'm not a super cyclist don't own a super road bike. But I love taking my bike for shopping groceries and commute to work. Thank you for these great tips. Love your accent. Natalie from Canada🇨🇦
Thanks for your enthusiasm! You're the man!
That’s very kind of you 👍
Brilliant! Definitely following your tips before going on my next bike ride. Thank you!
Excellent 👌
Excellent video with great tips. Posture was highlighted to me a while ago and has made a difference to my comfort so spot on.
Thanks Edward. I plan to share more workouts that target posture as well 👍
Thanks coach, really well explained and easy to understand.
