  • What does the size, shape, and color of your stool mean? Watch this video to learn about the types of stool.
    Timestamps:
0:08 Stool type: Hard little round chunks
    0:28 Stool type: Unformed flakes
    1:01 Stool type: Floating stool
    1:27 Stool type: Skidmarks
    1:59 Stool type: Dry stool
2:17 Red stool? Rule these out first
    2:29 My “stool” sample
    1. Hard little round chunks
This is a sign of too much protein. Cut back on protein and avoid high-protein products, like protein shakes and protein bars.
    2. Unformed flakes
This is a sign of not enough enzymes. Many people who jump into a new diet have this problem. Take it slow so that your body has enough time to build up the right enzymes to break down your food.
    3. Floating stool
This is a sign of a lack of bile. When your bile is low, your body doesn’t fully digest fat. This leaves fat your stool, which floats in water.
    4. Skid marks
This is a sign of a lack of pancreas enzymes. This will often accompany dark tarry stool. A digestive enzyme formula can help with this.
    5. Dry stool
This is a sign of a lack of good gut bacteria. You can help fix this problem by consuming healthy probiotics.
If you have a red or bloody-looking stool, first rule out if it’s a situation where you’ve had too many beets. Beets can cause your stool to seem bloody when it isn’t. It could also be hemorrhoids.

I've learned that black stool can mean bleeding in the upper intestinal tract or in the stomach or esophagus and even from excessive nose bleeds. The big concern I learned with black stool is bleeding in the upper intestines that changes the color of red to black by the time you pass the stool that raises concerns about cancer. Bright red can mean hemorrhoids and bleeding closer to the rectum because it is blood that is fresher and hasn't changed color, but can also becaused by cancerous polyps nearer to the rectum. Did I learn wrong about black stools? I'm only amateur.

Thanks for sharing! We love this topic! To add to this, you should have at least 1 formed bowel movement per day. 1-3 bowel movements per day is healthy. Some people have more than 1 bowel movement per day because they eat a lot of plant foods with a lot of fiber!

Hi Dr. Berg! Glad I found your channel! I’m a newbie when it comes to nutrition, and I have been figuring out how to improve my health. I have hypothyroid and been suffering from constipation since young (probably around once a week of bowel movement only). Just last week I began cutting down my carbohydrates and switching from white rice to brown rice. Plus loaded on my vegetables (spinach, broccoli, pechay) and began having at least once a day bowel movement! I was so happy and decided to keep this diet i.e. leaning more towards vegetables plus some protein and fat. Question is… and I’m clueless why… For the first 4 days, it was fine. Then I began having no bowel movements again… Why oh why ? L Feeling discouraged … Would appreciate any insights on this. Thank you so much

In another video, Dr Berg says to cut back on the vegetables until you can handle it. Then slowly add more veggies over time to give your body time to adjust and make more enzymes for the greater amount of veggies.
I wish could remember the exact video. But, you can probably find it by searching "Dr Berg vegetables" or something similar. Then you'll have to sift through the videos. Good luck!

I am in week 6 of Keto and my stool is green the last few days. I just started using MCT oil this week, and I eat a bit of spinach with lunch every day.....could either of those be the cause?

Hi Dr, What does it mean when the stool is flat or ribbon like even though the colon was examined to be normal (ruling out lumps or masses to cause the flat stool)? Thanks.

Dr. Berg, you are a very funny man. I love all your videos. Your wife is also very funny, and I love your cooking videos, too. Could you and her do some medical videos together. Together, your humor is that much better.
    Thanks Doc
