  • There are several types of footings that engineers might need to create in the field based on the location of the column. This video shows how to place reinforcement for the corner column.
    Here are the main steps:
    The excavation is done as per the size of the footing. Then the PCC is laid to create a smooth surface. Then the cover blocks are used to maintain the cover required for the concrete rebars over which the bottom reinforcement is placed. After placing bottom reinforcement rebars, the column reinforcement is placed - note that for seismic areas the ties can be placed at the bottom of the column to resist the tension or bending at the connection. Then the top bars are placed at the top.
    Now that the reinforcement is laid the scaffolding is placed to allow the pouring of concrete and consolidate it for the next 28 days to get the required strength. The overlapping column bars to the point where the footing is to be buried are also placed with the tie bars.
    Finally, the footing is buried and filled with the soil called backfilling.
