It's insane how people conflate tough hard-hitting playoff hockey with dirty hits. If a dude is cross checking someone over and over again, when the puck is nowhere in sight, the ref needs to call a penalty.

The worst part is how skill is marketed in the season, to only be riding backseat to savagery in the playoffs. Some of these plays are dirty and the dirt goes both ways. But particularly for teams like the oilers the hacking and slashing on mcjesus would never fly in the season, and the NHL carries over to the playoffs and suddenly stops calling things the same. I love the game, but as I get older and the bruisers are chased from the game in general I don't see the same need for non calls in the playoffs. Should just call the game. If you want the NHL to be a skill game, the skill should be rewarded. Just my 2 cents

The officiating these NHL playoffs has let several series get out of hand, leaving referees and their interpretation of rules playing a major influence over a) how individual games play out and b) who remains eligible to contest the series after dirty plays cause injuries.
It seems the NHL and DoPS think the way to "grow the game" is to tip the scales in favour of small market teams and arbitrary "parity" at the expense of actual competition. If I enjoyed massive body slams I'd watch UFC... though this sport has shades more similar to WWE nowadays.

If you're going to do a breakdown on the evolution of the three Florida goals, don't omit Giordano's failure to track Lundell on the 1st Florida goal, his responsibility after Liljegren slings the puck around behind the net. Yes, Tavares blows a tire that helps Reinhart's back pass, but how Giordano fails to recognize the danger Lundell poses is, truly puzzling.
The 2nd goal, which is the result of Nylander, a careless guy frequently & especially in, or near his D-zone, getting his lunch stolen by Duclair. What most people missed on TV, was a black & white, text-book trip by Barkov on O'Reilly a scant 10 feet away from the spot Nylander coughs up the puck. Barkov had his stick right in between O'Reilly's legs in a classic tripping foul called almost 100% of the time, but oddly, not that time. Who scores the goal? Barkov, the guy who has fouled the Leaf centre eliminating him from being able to defend the play. O'Reilly was pissed & let the ref know it right after the trip. Don't ever tell me non-calls on blatant fouls don't critically impact games. Should've been no goal & another Florida penalty.
The 3rd Florida goal results from the too-cute-for-their-own-good pair of Marner & Matthews always pushing offensive creativity, but seemingly unable to recognize the times you cannot do that shit, EVER, which is in your own D-zone! Questionable pass from Marner considering Florida had just tied the game, but the real fuck-up is Matthews & his idiot, soft, high risk, flip pass within reach of Luostarinen, who knocked it down easily. Matthews then blows the D-zone coverage on his own blunder, moving to cover Tkachuck who Bunting is already moving toward. That leaves late guy into the zone, Forsling loose to score the go ahead goal. It's called game management, being aware of the score & when it's NOT appropriate to try risky plays. The Leafs have basically gifted Florida all 7 of the goals they've scored. You simply cannot play like that in the post-season & expect any kind of success. Hugely pissed-off.

1st goal was on Tavares not Gio. Blowing the tire was not the problem either. Under the circumstances of that play and the position of his teammates he absolutely cannot chase that puck behind the net. That is a stop at the post and defend against that pass coming out. I think JT realized his mistake chasing that which is why he lost his edge as he tried to stop up. One thing has been consistent with this team for a couple months now, JT and Nylander are the two biggest defensive liabilities on the team and we've seen it play out time and time again.

He might've been gassed from the chase back down the ice from the Florida end where he'd pinched in, but couldn't keep the puck in the O-zone. Giordano's check all day long.

In MLB you have an UMP covering every base and in the playoffs you even have 2 more covering the lines. He explained it like 'he got tied up in my arms' -- that's like punching someone in the face and saying 'they ran into my fist'. There's intent. It has no place in the game. The fact that the refs called him for just 2 minutes of penalties between these two plays is a whole other matter.

As a B's fan, I know I will cop all kinds of flack and be told to cope (that's fine, I'm already on to next year. Panthers did play well), but I have to say Bennet, Gudas and to an extent Tkachuk got away with a lot in the first round. Gudas had about 4 blatant missed interference calls in game 1 alone. I know no one cares because he mainly targeted Marchand, but there were several instances where he crosschecked players in the back to the ground and then sat on them when the puck was on the other side of the ice and nothing was called. Bennet had some dirty hits too.
I get it with playoff hockey and blah blah blah, but the frustration at the time only comes from the CONSISTENCY of the league.
Other calls in the series like the 'hand pass' goal, yet the Kings had a clear high stick play turn goal only the night before where both were reviewed yet the Kings goal stood etc.
I know officials can't get it right every time but this year in it's entirety has been so inconsistent with cross checking, charging, kicking motions, goalie interference etc I feel like the league just needs to pick what they actually want and stick with it.

NHL Playoffs officiating is an embarrassment. It shouldn't be any different versus the Regular Season. That's the problem with the NHL and why most of the world thinks it's a joke of a league.
Does the NHL stack up to Leagues like the MLB? NFL? FIFA? NBA? Absolutely Not, because a Penalty is a Penalty, regardless of Playoffs or Regular Season.
Why does the NHL allow Bullies to deliberately harm NHL players? Especially the key difference makers? Exactly why the NHL is a Joke.

I've been watching playoff hockey since at least 1970. I was 8 when I walked into my dad's bedroom to see what all the cheering was about in 1967 and saw the Leafs hoisting the cup. The one thing I've learned is that playoff hockey is what it is. One player's hit is another player's penalty. The same take down behind the net can win the puck or it can injure a player. I still don't understand why the referee was punished for calling a penalty on the Golden Knights player for body slamming the Sharks player on the ice which also resulted in a concussion and missed games. How is the Knives take down different from the Leafs take down of the Panther player a few minutes earlier in the game when everyone cheered? I watcher the Flyers manhandle every team in the mid-1970s. It was the most brutal hockey you'll ever see and they have 2 cups to show for it. I'm not saying all is fair in love and hockey. Freak accidents happen. All you can do is hope the scales balance. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don't. In hockey the bad guys often win. They're not the 'dirty' players. They're just the ones who don't wear your home jersey.

The reason matthews was suspended for the cross check was the intent to injure. He got up and wanted to kill that dude. This one wasn't intended that way, but ended up in the neck area. I would agree with a fine only, or a 1 game, but intent is a HIGE part in the matthews suspension.

    • @ScottGostick

When you intentionally cross check someone high, it is not carelessness it is intent to injure. Same is same. When you accidentally cross check high like it bounces off the shoulder and such then it is carelessness. Note the follow up cross check to the spine as his prey was still squirming after the initial attempt to injure wasn't good enough.
The difference was not about the intent but about the mood. Bennet had no reason and Mathews was retaliating. So the message from the league is don't show us up and self police but allow us to display our incompetence in it's full glory.
I do note that Lafferty got a fine for a similar cross check in TB series, but his I would say was a careless to the head not an intentional.
