There's more to it, most of your arguments apply to Columbus, Ottawa and (formely) Arizona. Yet, their culture and team work mentality is world appart from what we've been seeing in Winnipeg.
It absolutely does have some truth to it. Chevy has been an absolute mastermind in building this team. They've been building towards this (yes, I know it's not sustainable, but I'm going to enjoy it) for a few years now. you gotta learn how to win - and they are.
The funny thing is once a player gets to Winnipeg, they generally don't want to leave. The organization treats them and their families with respect and dignity. Look at last year with the Adam Johnson situation, Neal Pionk was AJ's best friend and wanted to attend his funeral. The Jets were about to leave on a road trip, but the team ownership chartered at Private Jet for Pionk and other Jets who wanted to attend so they could maximize the time they had at home. They then allowed a player from the St.Louis Blues to fly with them on the PJ to the next game. Class all the way. THAT is why players want to stay in Winnipeg.
Byfuglien-? Dubois-? McGroarty-? Shane Doan-return to Winnipeg...hell no! Teffoli-? Monahan-? Laine-? What you are saying, and what I am seeing doesn't really match up, I have no doubt that they are treated well, but it appears many want to leave. That all said, GO JETS!!!!!! Respect from a Habs fan!
@nathanadrian7797 Byfuglien retired Dubios and Laine have requested trades from multiple teams Toffoli and Monahan were pure rentals and simply wanted to get paid and McGroarty is an entitled prospect that never even played a game so what r on about
You can find him at the ice fishing show sometimes , yesterday at Cableas. Just go to a hunting fishing store you just might find the best goalie there.
From what I've heard, Winnipeg is the worst city in Canada. Not just extreme cold and heat but murder capital of Canada, per capita, and drug filled city. Considering the size and population, those are not good stats
I recently got into hockey and after doing a lot of research, decided to go all in on the Jets. Your points in the video are exactly what I realised after watching many, many videos about the behind the scenes culture and personalities and the documentary about the return to Winnipeg. I have a very good feeling about this specific group of players - let's see what they can do! Hopefully one day I can come and watch a game on home ice (just need to sort out that pesky visa as a South African!) 😅 As we say, "Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie!"
They do a great job on a great many things but I never liked their picks for coaches other than Maurice and Scotty. Hope Chevy is enjoying the start to this season. Must be a huge relief when things are going super fantastically!
@@falconeaterf15u never liked their picks for coaches other than basically the only coaches they’ve ever had? Bowness is the only one ur not mentioning unless you’re really going back to Claude noels 1 year
Jets never get respect. Appreciate the kind words and drawing some attention! They don't like to play in Winnipeg because they lose when they come here! #gojetsgo
I've always respected the Jets. Northern bros. Just pure class from the Org, and the fanbase is top notch. You'll never see WPG fans being toxic on social media.
@@krisrolph1058 i've seen plenty of toxic Jets fans, though most of it is directed at their own team. Even now, I'm sure if you looked hard enough, you could find Jets fans complaining about something with this team despite having the best start ever.
@@reaganharder1480 Indeed...I've seen alot of those posts, all in an attempt to toss a turd into the punch bowl and undermine the Jets' success. Particularly as they usually always start their comment with "Jet fan here..." and then proceed to say nothing positive about the team. However...I'm not convinced in the slightest that they're actually "Jets fans"...which means it's probably either some greasy slob working in a Russian troll farm making those posts, or just a really, really, REALLY bitter fan whose team was probably recently destroyed by the Jets. F*ck the doubters. GO JETS GO!!!
I am a Jets fan, honestly love the team so much. We are truly the only team in the league that can say we rebuilt. Most other teams accelerate with a big FA signing, or big trade. We had shit from atlanta, and we are now one of the most well built teams in the NHL.
Enjoy it now because I doubt the Jets will be around much longer. No disrespect, as I do like the Jets, but too many things stacked against them. I give it 5 years tops
@ David Thompson (Jets Owner) is worth 71.3 billion. The 23rd richest person in the world. The Jets won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. They already made $800 million in terms of market value since being purchased in 2011. The main reason why David Thompson bought the Jets was to control most of the downtown core, in order to make his investment into downtown Winnipeg viable the Jets have to stay there (literally the cornerstone of his grand plan) So i appreciate your insight but you are so terribly wrong.
@uhSublime OK. Time will tell. It's not about what the owner is worth, it's about what the team brings in. Between players not wanting to play there, as mention in the video, and too many empty seats, they are not bringing in the money for the league. One of the smallest markets in the league. Even when they win, they can't fill the arena.
That culture you speak of is a HUGE part of why the Jets are doing so well. I believe every player on the team wants to be here, and they all have the same goal.
Yeah you have the polar opposite in Toronto. All you get are people who are there for the wrong reasons. And they end up alienating everyone else. Matthews basically signed a contract that told the world he plans to spend the rest of his career on teams that can't possible be competitive. Keeping in mind he pays arizona taxes(it's considered his home) and gets paid by a bonus that goes to the lowest possible tax rate. And then he makes an absolute fortune because he's a Toronto superstar. Guy would lose $2-3 million a year in endorsements with ease. Yet despite all this he decided to milk his team for as much as he possible could.
Sure Winnipeg is small market and cold but it has great character. I opted for them to be my team after decades of watching big wealthy Toronto fleece its loyal fan base while not truly committing to win them a cup. Winnipeg has always been like the little engine that could. They have a great fan base and an executive and ownership that respects those fans. Case in point, a few years ago the question of whether to sell large blocks of tickets came up. Winnipeg opted to discontinue that since it meant ticket prices went beyond the reach of average fan families when scalpers sold them at a premium; Toronto ownership opted to continue large block sales but added a surcharge so they could get a cut. Toronto Maple Leafs are about making money, period. Winnipeg players have chosen less money rather than play for other organizations and , not surprisingly, there is not one prima dona on the entire team and they have, to a man, bought in to the system of play set out for them. They are a class bunch representing a class city and I’m proud to be a fan. I was a little concerned when their former class act coach Paul Maurice stepped away claiming he had taken the team as far as he could but all has been made right with his winning a Stanley Cup a year and a half later and now his former club is poised to take a serious shot at it.
The Leafs surely want to win, but making money is their prerogative. Comparing them and the Jets reminds me of the Blue Jays versus the Tampa Bay Rays......
It's also important to appreciate the difference between more introverted people who focus on their job. If you're an extrovert Winnipeg is hell. But for a lot of introverts is perfect. If you're an introvert the idea of doing the thing you love and driving home to your giant peaceful mansion is the dream. Even an NHLer would struggle with a lot of proper mansions in Newyork/LA etc. Many don't have the money to get monster homes and instead get relatively small houses(relative to their wealth). In Winnipeg you can avoid winter by simply getting a heated garage. Winnipeg is sunny in winter so it doesn't feel bad driving around in a nice car.
Very interesting, and I agree with a lot of what you say, it seems like more recently players care more about getting paid then winning, and as much as I love my Bruins, I'd love to see the Jets take it this year as a big middle finger to a lot of the other players who reject wanting to play there.
I don't think the Jets will be in Winnipeg much longer, honestly. Whether they were to win the cup or not, and I'm going with not, they have too many things against them and I don't see it getting better
@@jeffreycairns767You keep saying this in every thread. It's not relevant. That team deserves their success and it's pretty remarkable given their story
@benjaminallen6469 Except, it is. They've had no success in anyway. Starting the season out well is not success. They've never won a cup, can't fill the arena despite a great start, and They've already been moved once.
@@jeffreycairns767Thé two games I’ve gone to this year. Against San Jose and Dallas. The arena has been atleast 90% capacity (odds are atleast 4% of the missing seats are from season ticket holders or resellers). The odd seat here and there may be empty and the building has more life than the last 3 years.
Hey Winnipegger here, thanks for your nice words about our city. I think your theory is correct, we do a great job of attracting maybe not the top players, but the right ones for Winnipeg. Our cheesey corporate motto "Fuelled by Passion" is cringey but accurate. We manage to support an NHL franchise in a medium size, low income Canadian city. 2/3 pickup trucks have a Jets license plate here, y'know? Even aside from Hellebuyck, many players including Connor are big outdoorsmen. Hunting, fishing, camping etc, you literally can't find a better place than Manitoba in my opinion. We're the Land of 100,000 Lakes.
Jets are my 2nd team, and are consistently overlooked by everyone. Although they have a poor playoff record, they are consistently one of the better team in the league, and usually near the top of their division. With how well they are playing this year, maybe they'll finally do well in playoffs and get the praise they deserve. I think you hit the nail on the head when it comes to players wanting to play in Winnipeg and it creates a good team culture.
There's just such a calm confidence that runs through the whole organization. This team gives off modern vibes, somehow, even though it comes out of Winnipeg. Like they realized they could play perfect hockey if they would just all buy into the physicality of Jets identity style, and the mental health vibe of the room just settled to stillness. If they can consistently play 2-way, 200-ft hockey, the crazy stats and numbers will continue to roll in and fans will continue to be dazzled by, frankly, the most exciting thing on the planet. (We Jets fans are so lucky!) Go Jets!
@@chrismdb5686 They swept the oilers in 2021. In 2022 they didn't make the playoffs in large part because of toxic wheeler and dubois. In 2023 they got destroyed by the Stanley cup winner, just as they were knocked out by the blues on their cup run. Avs were really the only time they were properly destroyed in the first round by a team that wasn't cup bound(or at the very least going to the final). The reality is playoff hockey relies on luck(other betting odds wouldn't be so dicey). I'm not saying the Jets have been unlucky, but they are built for playoff hockey. Their failures are in large part because of Dubois and Wheeler. 2024 was very much the exception. The Jets ironically had a good power play as Wheeler was their leader. They lost one player and that caused their powerplay to go into free fall last season, when they finally got their defense game up to snuff. It was predictable they'd have a way better power play this year as many of the current ppers had success on the pp in previous seasons. The Jets are built for playoff hockey. This season is a natural development from the previous seasons. The Jets lost Little and Byfuglien and Laine. For a while the only replacement piece was Dubois. Losing a top RHD, a top sniper, and your 2 c is gonna put you in free fall for quite a wile. The Jets have gotten good exactly when one would imagine them to get good.
Sure, Crosby took a pay cut in Pittsburgh. But it helped him win three Stanley Cups and make the playoffs year after year after year for a decade and a half. And this level of success absolutely made him a bigger, bankable star. Think of all the money he made from commercials with Tim Hortons, Gatorade, Reebok... At the end of the day, Crosby's lower contract might have given him more money total
So many players are far too worried about their salary for income, like dudes if you just take a reasonable salary for what you can do and find more success because your team has more money to work with you'll be far more attractive to advertisers etc.
A couple things: Wheeler getting traded was one of the best things that ever happened to the team. Lowry is a good guy to wear the “C”. Lifelong hockey kid. Chevy understood from the beginning that Winnipeg needs to draft and develop, both being critical to teams success. Speaking of development, the organization is helping these players achieve greater abilities on the ice with proper communication, guidance, and care. Huge credit goes to the great Paul Maurice, with Rick Bowness and Scott Arniel getting honourable mentions. There are no players left from the Thrashers team of 2010 - 2011. All players on the team now have been drafted or acquired by this management team. (Edit) Every single player on the team is from the North. I believe the player born furthest south is Pionk who was born in Nebraska. Everyone else is from Canada, Northern Europe, or northern states like Michigan, Wisconsin, New York State etc. This is by design and part of the teams’ makeup. F*** the players that don’t want to play here, we don’t want you 😈
@@thefinaldispatch It may have been time to go for Wheeler but I am not inclined to ignore the great things he did do for the jets in his prime. Our best play off success was with him as our leader. Until the last couple of years he was always the hardest working Jet on the team. He set the bar high for the younger folks and when some of those babies (see Laine) couldn't handle it, Wheeler got roasted -where is Laine now? We sure don't need to burn every single player that is no longer a Jet.
As i always say…..Winnipeg makes men from boys. If you sip your latte and get upset that it is cold, winnipeg sucks. But if you accept it, then you have two lakes you can see from space and a zillion little lakes never seen by a human. You can drive 1hr north and be int he wilderness. Winnipeg is similar to Minneapolis except there is less USA here. Quote from an American I know. “It is just like the US here except there is no US here.”
Laine/Schiefele and Wheeler were the problem. It was always just 3 players(swap Laine with Dubois). Laine/Dubois was a more obvious well understood story. But the Wheeler/Schiefele issue was a much much bigger problem, everyone one else would grind their arses off, and they'd turn around and play defenseively irresponsible hockey. Both had massive egos and were not fixing the flaws in their game/defense. Both had tunnel vision for just hockey and weren't interested in relating/leading the team etc. There's a reason Schiefele isn't the Captain of the team.
Love your take on this. I'm so glad 2 of our biggest stars are stoked on going fishing on their off time. i'm sure that factored into why they resigned.
I can subscribe to your theory. I see it, and it paints a new picture in my brain about a team that I would want to root for because the players are there for the right reason. Thanks for this video
The chance to contribute to a winning team is a strong draw. There’s also a level of respect amongst the players for guys that take team friendly contracts. Since virtually everything isn’t spent on 5 or 6 players the cap is more equitably distributed. The team is talented from top to bottom, and just run their opponents ragged.
A 40 year ex nhler, can't turn back time, nor can they goto the bank to get the cash needed to buy a Stanley cup. How many retired players say after their career ended that "ah a cup was no big deal, I didn't really want one". I wish more players while still young, understood the regret they have when they piss away their career with excessive contracts. This romantic notion of going on league minimum at 35 and getting a cup is something may 4-5 players in the cap era have pulled off.
Jets are my second favorite team, and I think you just might be on the right track here. So awesome to see a number of team friendly contracts. (Hate the Karlsson contract - Pens are my favorite team as that's where I grew up.) Go Jets Go! ✈️
The great thing is they really could become Canada's team. They're a hard to hate team which means most Canadians could rally around them(as a 2nd team) They're "centrally located" in terms of TV/timezones. I think the Jets will end up becoming Canada's Green Bay Packers. Anyone not sure what team to follow will follow them.
This is an excellent take and as a Jets fan, I 100% agree. I'm always so proud and impressed by what the organization is able to do and the character of the players that chose to play in Winnipeg. It's always something hard to explain to casual fans or fans that want to blame the team and management, and constantly ask for change when times are tough. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "Fire Maurice!" "Trade Scheifele!" "Hellebuyck is trash!" "Cheveldayoff never makes any moves!" when the Jets are struggling and it's difficult to explain that the situation that the Jets have to deal with is very different from the Leafs, the Habs, or teams in the American South and that the organization genuinely does an amazing job of constructing an entertaining, and competitive team. Thanks Rob! I'll be sending this video when I hear those comments in the future
Its interesting that the locker room culture seems to be such a bonus thing now in Winnipeg.... considering how terrible it was reported to be in the Wheeler era. Probably the younger guys who got treated like dogshit back then now coming up and taking leadership roles and deciding they won't treat everyone else like that.
The Jets are my 2nd favorite team behind my hometown New Jersey Devils. If I was ever good enough to play in the NHL (former Juniors and colligate player), and if I couldn't play for the Devils, I would kill to play for the Winnipeg Jets! Pretty much the reason being, as far as I am concerned, they have one of if not THE best fan bases in the entire NHL! Why would I not want to do everything that I can for the team and fans night in and night out? The only thing I did not quite get is the fall out with Wheeler and how quickly he was just ousted as Captain and then from the team. EDIT: I guess the Wheeler situation just was not that much known to us in the US.
Thank you so much for your comments about playing for Winnipeg. You have the type of character the team would be interested in. That's where things went wrong with Wheeler. He was a great player but what came out from the players was his mistreatment of younger players. Laine for example wanted out because of Wheeler which was a loss for the team although we've done well with the trades. Bones dealt with the toxicity in the room and set the stage for a better team culture. I really liked Wheeler but he had a negative effect on the room. Hope this explains things for you.
Wheeler was toxic. Apparently heard he had substance abuse issues, though never formerly caught or placed in player assistance program. More like using substances to "get going". Give thr edge and also worsen anger or heighten fighting. Things thr organization didn't want. They value integrity in players. And don't want that type of toxic behavior. It's a very family oriented team and organization. Bones turned it around. Now it's how we want it. Everyone is happy here now. Everyone has a say.everyone gets a chance and is heard. The captain and leaders of the team look out for the new ones. Mentor them. Take them out for dinner or fishing. They are a team on and off the ice.
@@kathygreenlay73 I just saw the clip of Jets fans utterly roasting Ottinger with the chant of "US BACK UP!" When the Jets completely dominated the Stars a few days ago! Jets fans know that Connor Hellebuyck is an American goaltender... and that when called on he will represent the US in any national tournament... Olympics or whatever that "Big Four" country tournament that is coming up... Ottinger and the Stars are no slouch of a team, so the fact that the Jets were dominating them on that night is not to be taken likely... However, the fact that the Winnipeg fan base had the gaul to chirp Ottinger pretty much into oblivion that game is AMAZING!! And completely solidifies my love for that team (as a 2nd NHL favorite) as well as the fan base!
The Jets could retain any player if they were willing to overpay, like some other teams. The key is this team if fixed on wining without overpaying. No team in the NHL comes even close when it comes to team depth and not even a single player earning over 9M.
Yeah it's also because ownership is independently wealthy of the team. They aren't worried about short term earnings. Their GM gets a really long leash. He's never making 1 season decisions. He's always thinking 10 years out. Something that can't happen when a GM doesn't think he'll have a 10 year career. It also helps in negotiations when tradingwith other GMs. "Why do you always get the best contracts?" "Because the franchise will relocate if I don't".
I thought Boston would be higher. As the road team, their fans are, apparently, very racist and disrespectful. Fun is fun and I get it's a sports thing but some fans take it way too far
I have heard that a lot of players from southern Ontario don’t like playing in Toronto as visiting puts pressure on them to find tickets for friends and family along with the extra pressure to play well
@Indium111 It's unfortunate but also true. We all know that if you're around friends that are acting immature, we are far more likely to act the same way. Fans are no different
@@46babaganoosh Happens in Winnipeg too, but it's Jets season ticket holders selling their seats on the secondary market to some doofus willing to pay exorbitant prices to see the Maple Buds. Winnipeggers are notoriously frugal, it's one of our positive traits....as well as a negative.
@@edclarkson638 Sure, you'll get fans of opposing teams in Winnipeg, that dates back to the original 6. What you won't find is more of those fans than jets fans at a jets home game.
Interesting thought on the Jets as to the quality of character the Jets have. Kane definitely didn’t fit with the team but he was from the Atlanta team. Egos have no room on this team.
And now he's in Edmonton, which is basically slightly warmer but substaintially further north, giving you a much shorter day mid winter(not to mention the increased travel of being so far north and west.
Very well laid out. And correct. all of what you said. Talk about a deep team, wow! Just look at the schooling they gave to Dallas when they set the all time NHL best start record. Dallas looked like a 'beer league team', to me, compared to the Jets. Oh, one little bit of 'you could not make this stuff up'. Just before the Toronto game, our much loved Ron Maclean points to Jennifer B., and says and 'you, being from Winnipeg, will like this, the Jets beat Dallas this afternoon'. That was it, 5 to 8 seconds, no mention of the NHL record start by the Jets or the fact that Winnipeg is the best team at this time in all categories. No pause to see what Jennifer has to say. And, without missing a beat, moved on to the endless prattle about Canada's favourite team, the Leafs.
The Jets have had their fair share of bad culture and what not in the past though. It’s only now that we no longer have anyone from the Thrashers era, gotten rid of players that weren’t happy on the team, and have managed to resign humble, easy going, and family oriented guys that we have this incredible chemistry
One of the best thoughts about Winnipeg. Its a beautiful city, not the best but far from the worst. Humble harty players flourish in it when the team is full of them.
It’s easy to say Winnipeg doesn’t compare to almost every other city in the NHL. I LOVE this take on how Winnipeg is great BECAUSE this naturally weeds out the asshats who don’t want to play here.
Yeah seriously people act like Winnipeg is a frozen wasteland for 12 months a year. It's 3 months that are really really bad. But it's also when the players are most fixated on the season. When people complain about weather I always wonder if these people are actually fans of a winter sport called hockey.
Winnipeg being the worst place isn’t because of the weather and other BS, it’s because of the fact the fans are really loyal and thunderously support their team. You should know about The Whiteout, that tells you everything
It's also because downtown is partially awful. If you're just in for a game it's not great especially driving from the airport. The flip side is buying a gigantic mansion 10 minutes from the Arena is really cheap and easy. If you're in New York you choose between having a mansion(less than $20 million) and a 1 hour drive. If you're not wanting a proper gianto mansion winnipeg ain't for you, but it's amazing for that.
wtf is wrong with you guys watching, like the vid!!! rob is awesome, and wouldnt we want him to make a living out of those videos? now please, like the damn video
Very interesting take on the situation we're in. Winnipeg fans ALWAYS know when a player doesn't wanna be here (so it's gotta be super obvious to management/coaching staff/teammates). We all know it's gotta suck to be an All-star making millions of dollars who has to live in a shit hole like Winnipeg, so everyone's that much more appreciative to those players who stick around. (ie. Brian Little gets a night dedicated to him, while PLD get appropriately booed every time he steps on the ice). What I think you're missing is that most of the players Winnipeg has retained on these cap friendly contracts have zero cups. And I don't think it's a stretch to say 95% of players without one would choose winning one over maximizing their value. So sticking around and collectively agreeing to put the team first not only maximizes their chance of winning, but also immortalizing themselves as the first group of Jets to EVER win a cup. It may be a stretch, but I think the latter actually means a lot to this group.
I take exception to "shit hole" sure, there are parts of town you stay out of, but it's no different with any other major city. I'd rather put up with the cold in Winnipeg than the cockroaches in Vancouver.
@@46babaganooshThe player's kids also don't have to worry about mass shootings at school and we have clean air other than a couple of smokey days per year.
This is a great video, although with Monahan and Toffoli, they signed for a combined $11.5 million that just didn't exist even individually for the Jets cap. At the same time, there's about $5.5 million in buyouts coming off the books this year so yeah, they're basically $8 million under the cap, but that also says to the players that want to be here, we'll take care of you, but we'll also compete.
Winnipeg is a truly scary team this season, 24/25. The best goalie in the league followed with an amazingly organized team. Their a playoff contender, deep. Avs fan, screw Edmonton!!
Winnipeg cost of living was a lot less before as well, so a modest salary for those players goes further. But yes, the weather alone probably turns off many people.
The weather is a bit of a nothing burger in my opinion. Like you play a winter sport, you're not terrified of the sight of ice. You can easily afford a mansion and you can easily afford a heated driveway/heated garage and so you never have to go outside in winter. It's also relatively sunny. Sunshine/exercise/ help you avoid the winter blues.
means alot as a jets fan, youd never understand how good it feels right now being a jets fan in a bc town. the fishing here and kenora really does help. withought the fishing here I know for a fact helle would've gone somewhere else
Hellebuyck proudly rocks a native greenback walleye on his helmet! He’s all-in on supporting the local fishing scene, promoting local fishing outfitters and participating in all kinds of fan raffles focused on fishing
"Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast!" - Peter Drucker 2006. If you want a strategy to live you need to ensure it fits your culture or you create the "right" culture first within the organization then deploy your strategy. If your theory is correct, which I believe sounds very reasonable, then we are witnessing the birth of a culture which will change sports and possibly the way the NHL looks at remote teams. Teams like Vegas can throw big money around and have a lot of players who want to live their but eventually the toxicity will creep in like a cancer and soon you have big names, big salaries and team who can't get their stuff together. I hope you are correct and we witness the Jets take the Stanley Cup wouldn't that kick the league in the ASS!!
Columbus has been a trash team for most of its history and yet, fans show up in droves to their games. Meanwhile, I guarantee people forgot just how dire it was for the Panthers, Hurricanes and Lightning attendance-wise before they got good. Hell, even the Blackhawks' attendance was completely abysmal in the mid-2000s before getting Kane and Toews. I'm so happy the Jackets finally get some sort of recognition now with the opportunity to host their very first outdoors game
@ idk wether to feel insulted or to feel like you have a good point… I think it’s starting to get better since over the last year or two, we got quick, (more like quick trade), Sean Monahan, and Johnny Hockey, R.I.P. but I think as long as we have good attendance we won’t get relocated and we can still grow, it might just take a bit.
They have a good team just need to develop more. Having monahan is great asset. We loved him during his brief stint here in the Peg. I guess Columbus is just one of those smaller home town style markets like Winnipeg. They have a good coach too. So hope they see better days!
@@netimegaming9973 just to be clear, I absolutely love the Blue Jackets and I've been cheering for them for 15 years. This franchise has been through so much, the fanbase deserves a win so bad
A big part of why the jets are never talked about is that the jets are in the smallest market, even though hellebuyck is the best goaltender he was never really brought up among the other goalies in the last few seasons before this year, another guy is Kyle Connor he is never brought up even though he is a top ten player every year
There's also the fact that the team hasn't done anything in the playoffs the past 6 seasons. Last season, despite, their great regular season, they crapped the bed in the opening round of the playoffs. And this team has lost 10 straight games following a playoff loss. They want to get talked about, do it in the playoffs. That's what matters. Not where they finish in the regular season standings. Not how many games they go allowing 3 or less goals. Not how they start the season. Be a legit factor in the playoffs.
@@pomerlain8924 AVs were the worst possible matchup of 15 teams for the Jets. Their high altitude nullified the kind of smothering hockey the jets play. Makar/Mackinnon could beat hellybuck. They really were the Jets Kryptonite. They could have easily went on a run.
I also think that Winnipeg, being Winnipeg, mentally hardens the players in a way that very few other franchises do. I imagine that they probably have a slight psychological edge in home games just because so many other players just hate playing in Winnipeg. They've been my second favorite team for quite awhile, and this year with the Flames doing.. whatever it is they're doing I can't tell if they're rebuilding or still trying to unlock Huberdeau somehow, the Jets have been way more fun to watch
Seriously if I controlled the leafs, I'd have the entire team sleeping in a parking garage on cots used by the military. Hardship makes you hard, hockey is one of the hardest sports.
There is one thing you missed - that there is a rock star factor for all these guys, that they don't get in many other places - that along with a genuine feeling of community. It's very heart warming here, even though it's cold.
I'd argue it's more you feel like an actual hero. Like you're the champions of the city. It's one thing for people to idolize your wealth/you indulgences/your fame/your influence. It's another when they point at you as the person making your unpleasant city great.
The fact that 4.95% of the people voted that Ovi is the most overrated player in the league is downright mind boggling considering that he is on the verge of breaking Gretzky’s 894 all time career goals. Not to mention the numerous other records he has set in the league. Do these people not understand how difficult it is to score in the NHL, but to do so consistently for 20 seasons…. If a player plays 20 seasons and scores 40 goals in every single of the 20 seasons, he still will not have more than Gordie Howe, let alone Ovi and Gretzky. Anyways, I know this video has nothing to do with this, but I still had to say something.
It's funny Bucky is pretty much the only player that could be considered properly rated. Pretty much every single skater is underrated, hell even Stanley(the worst of 18)
It's true, Jets don't have to go through an Erik Karllson situation and mess up their cap, do not be surprised if Chevy can get Ehlers and Connor at very team friendly contract extensions, because they love the team and the city, and they have a chance at a Cup with Helle in net.
I think they'll trade Ehlers for a mid 6 C. He's not normally that great and the team has been burned by the fact he's very injury prone/a fragile little frame(but fast).
We trade out issues as they become apparent and consistently win those trades. We're still getting value out of the Evander Kane deal and the Patrick Laine deal.
Made out pretty good in the Dubois trade too. Villardi is a stud as long as he can stay healthy and Iafallo is a workhorse. And the Kings are playing better without Dubois, still wish him the best with the Capitals.
Fact: Winnipeg is the smallest market in the NHL. We don’t get special coverage or treatment. We’re a team for the fans. I invite every hockey fan out there who can’t afford the NHL ticket prices of their local team and feels left out in the cold to become a Jets fan! We want you!
Its entirely the draft and develop system leading to their success. It's been mostly the same ownership and plan, with a lot of development for about a decade now. The AHL team runs the same systems so they can call players up and down without having to teach them new systems, and the players slot right in with minimal adjustments. Obviously without good development they are going to get good trades, so they know what they are doing on both aspects. The Manitoba Moose are always competitive and have a good roster so it's like having 8 lines lol. Lots of players don't wanna play here or live here and I don't blame them. It is very cold in winter and there isn't really any reason to visit specifically, or any major attractions that are super appealing to travellers.
"SHOCKER!";-- Some lads like living in the country away from the crime addled streets of some other places, These professional athletes don't need to be around drug areas, red light districts, casinos etc & especially when they are young family men who prefer their wives & children to feel relatively safe. Also although a Canadian team the players are allowed to breathe without being microscopically judged as in some other hockey towns! PS/ Good luck to the down to Earth Winnipeg Jets, from another country boy.
I’m totally onboard with your theory and we all know that the playoffs require this sort of team harmony, fight for each other, and trust in the system. If they make the Finals this year I sure hope others will recognize you for the explanation as to “Why?”
I lived in Winnipeg and Kenora. As long as youre okay with -25C a few times annually its actually great. Your kids will become geniuses at building/engineering snow
3 hardest parts of winter. Getting exercise, getting to your car/driveway and the gloomy dark days. Winnipeg gets way way more sunshine than the North East. You get tons of exercise obviously. And when you can buy a house for cheap, you can afford a heated garage so you never have to step foot outside in the cold.
A Rangers VS Jets Matchup for the stanley cup would confuse alot of New Yorkers but that would be a great final this year .Cant wait till they face each other tuesday I know it’s early but could be a SCF preview
Very much! Would be great indeed. Love playing the Rangers. I recall thr last game together , it was back and forth nail biter fast game. Jets ended up winning it. But fantastic game.
@JaYPeeDee1025 yes come visit!! Thr atmosphere at our games is nuts. Even more so in playoffs. Praying this year we go to the top. Seems we are supported by fans around the league, too. Rooting for underdog. With our history we have never been to a final or won. And its about time. In years past I have always been happy for the underdog in all sports. In happy feel good stories. Now it feels like it's our turn. This city loves this team and hockey. Fans are friendly but relentless too. But they will buy you a beer too as long as you are respectful and kind to them. And just be there for love ofthe game.
@ i def plan to visit Winnipeg it’s my first stop when i visit canada .I was so happy when you guys got them back every .Im 41 so i remember the original Jets Selane scoring 76. goals as a rookie
I think this is definitely apart of the success, but you also have to have good management as well otherwise this would apply to other undesirable markets like Buffalo, Columbus etc.
howah u used to be from kenora that cool i lived there for a pretty long time now live it fort frances little town a few hours from it between kenora and thunder bay but that interesting
More players are coming around to Winnipeg. I get that the winters here are literally colder than Mars (true fact look it up) but in the last 15 years I've seen the downtown area thrive and grow tremendously around Canada life place. Personally I would probably make the next arena around princess auto stsdium
Great summary! Not to mention, Jets fans have the best chirps in the league! Anyone know of a video compilation? Examples: Jake Oettinger gets pulled “US backup”, Then DeSmith makes a couple of saves and it’s “We want Jake back”. Or against Corey Perry in the playoffs “Kate Perry”. Or way back when Crosby and the Pens visited “Mario’s pool boy”!
Im not a Jets fan, but am a fan of the Jets. They should have the respect of fans around the league. Its a loud building and filled with a lot of hockey culture and history.
"because Winnipeg makes great trades" --- Yes, and does great scouting and drafting. And it is largely thanks to our secret weapon, that being our GM Kevin Chevaldayoff. Smartest, savvyest, most underrated GM in the entire league.
In fairness his drafting is overrated. It's been a long time since he's drafted a top 6 player that wasn't due to them drafting early in the first round. Most of the good draft picks are actually getting quite old. I mean Perfetti/Samberg could turn into great players, but they aren't there yet.
Winnipegs greatest weakness being possibly their biggest strength is very interesting. I bet there’s also very little in respect to distractions for the players playing in Winnipeg also
Do you think my "crazy" theory/take has some truth to it? Just how is possible that this team set an NHL record?
I have sort of had that idea that as well
No absolutely not and I'm also from Winnipeg let's goooo honestly though we are probably gana poop the bed though
@@callmek.k5838Bro you're 14-1, I would kill to be in your spot lol
Lots of players didn’t want to be there. Good story about the team taking care of those players but let’s not ignore the players that did want out.
@nathanadrian7797 Byfuglien retired Dubios and Laine have requested trades from multiple teams Toffoli and Monahan were pure rentals and simply wanted to get paid and McGroarty is an entitled prospect that never even played a game so what r on about

@@lebradyskywalker5761keep hating
Wow, you really get us! One of only a few unfortunately. Thank you!

@@jeffreycairns767 Your just jealous because the Oilers suck,
Hey Winnipegger here, thanks for your nice words about our city.
Great analysis! We have a great bunch of guys representing our underrated city!
@@GreedyPiggy-md4rd One single year. I absolutely hate interacting with hockey fans, don't bother replying.
Totally agree..., nice take,...
Crosby would make way way more money in Toronto for sponsorship and the like. If he was a leaf he'd probably make an additional $100 million.
So many players are far too worried about their salary for income, like dudes if you just take a reasonable salary for what you can do and find more success because your team has more money to work with you'll be far more attractive to advertisers etc.
the only thing you missed is that the Jets also have some of the best jerseys in the league
Especially the white ones. Being that they're known for the Whiteout, they should be allowed to wear white at home
A couple things:
Wheeler getting traded was one of the best things that ever happened to the team.

What would you want to play a road game in Winnipeg?
It’s almost a guaranteed loss.
Of course they hate it.
It’s funny cause a few years ago people were saying the culture is the problem in Winnipeg. Always love the team. Hope they keep it up.
The culture is what the coach and players bring to the team... get rid of the prima donas and the culture gets better.
WOW! the Darnell vs Sidney and Makar's contracts......just wow
Crosby like Mario will own part or all of the Team eventually he is a Team player.
Seriously the truly frustrating part is so many of these contracts become bloated because the player agent wants more commission for themselves.
I really like this video as a jets fan, I could tell you put a lot of good effort in this video❤
Jets are my second favorite team, and I think you just might be on the right track here. So awesome to see a number of team friendly contracts. (Hate the Karlsson contract - Pens are my favorite team as that's where I grew up.) Go Jets Go! ✈️
Its about bringing the Stanley Cup back to Canada. It’s revenge for being moved to Arizona.
Hit the nail on the head with this one.

It's a very family oriented team and organization. Bones turned it around. Now it's how we want it. Everyone is happy here now. Everyone has a say.everyone gets a chance and is heard.

Nice a shout out to Kenora
I mean Kenora has more stanley cups to its name than Columbus, San Jose, Nashville, Minnesota, lol.
A very well done and thought out video.
Favourite road city to play in...honestly kinda surprised that Toronto was rated that lowly since so many players are from southern Ontario.
Cause they know it sucks lmao
I thought Boston would be higher. As the road team, their fans are, apparently, very racist and disrespectful. Fun is fun and I get it's a sports thing but some fans take it way too far
I have heard that a lot of players from southern Ontario don’t like playing in Toronto as visiting puts pressure on them to find tickets for friends and family along with the extra pressure to play well
@@jeffreycairns767 *some* fans. I would hate to think that they are ALL bad. I suspect that a only a few bad apples make the whole lot awful.
@Indium111 It's unfortunate but also true. We all know that if you're around friends that are acting immature, we are far more likely to act the same way. Fans are no different
What Winnipeg lacks it makes up for in heart, and in spades.
Awesome take my dude!
I'm loving Winnipeg right now... and I'm an American Sabres fan!
tough being a sabres fan.. you must be strong
Drunk……..we are drunk.
Is it true that when the Leafs are in town, there are more leaf fans than Saber fans?
@@46babaganoosh Happens in Winnipeg too, but it's Jets season ticket holders selling their seats on the secondary market to some doofus willing to pay exorbitant prices to see the Maple Buds. Winnipeggers are notoriously frugal, it's one of our positive traits....as well as a negative.
@@edclarkson638 Sure, you'll get fans of opposing teams in Winnipeg, that dates back to the original 6. What you won't find is more of those fans than jets fans at a jets home game.
My city has a little over 40000 people, to me Winnipeg is a Metropol!
I wouldn't mind living there.
That's good analysis. It really does show when a player isn't happy and it just seems gross to watch millionaires not giving a 100% effort.
Correction.. HAVING the best start to a season in NHL history 😌😏
Wah wah wah
@@robertfry8025 🤣
The Jets have had their fair share of bad culture and what not in the past though. It’s only now that we no longer have anyone from the Thrashers era, gotten rid of players that weren’t happy on the team, and have managed to resign humble, easy going, and family oriented guys that we have this incredible chemistry
One of the best thoughts about Winnipeg. Its a beautiful city, not the best but far from the worst. Humble harty players flourish in it when the team is full of them.
Thank you someone with a brain
It’s easy to say Winnipeg doesn’t compare to almost every other city in the NHL. I LOVE this take on how Winnipeg is great BECAUSE this naturally weeds out the asshats who don’t want to play here.
Yeah seriously people act like Winnipeg is a frozen wasteland for 12 months a year. It's 3 months that are really really bad. But it's also when the players are most fixated on the season. When people complain about weather I always wonder if these people are actually fans of a winter sport called hockey.
the oilers have always had bad management, that nurse contract is a joke
Winnipeg being the worst place isn’t because of the weather and other BS, it’s because of the fact the fans are really loyal and thunderously support their team. You should know about The Whiteout, that tells you everything
So you're basically saying...Winnipeg is the worst place because fans are really loyal and thunderously support their team???
Winnipeg shithole? Ain't that bad bro.
I take exception to "shit hole" sure, there are parts of town you stay out of, but it's no different with any other major city. I'd rather put up with the cold in Winnipeg than the cockroaches in Vancouver.
@46babaganoosh Fr
@@46babaganooshThe player's kids also don't have to worry about mass shootings at school and we have clean air other than a couple of smokey days per year.
yeah...kinda lost respect with the shithole comment.
Coming from an Avs fan...wow...thank you.
Honestly, this is a great video. You explain your point exceptionally well and it makes a lot of sense.
As a Rangers fan I'm very thankful the Jets are in the West 😂
means alot as a jets fan, youd never understand how good it feels right now being a jets fan in a bc town. the fishing here and kenora really does help. withought the fishing here I know for a fact helle would've gone somewhere else
Hellebuyck proudly rocks a native greenback walleye on his helmet! He’s all-in on supporting the local fishing scene, promoting local fishing outfitters and participating in all kinds of fan raffles focused on fishing
@@ethansul5578 does helle come to kenora to fish? havent seen him here. Used to see byfuglien here all the time
"Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast!" - Peter Drucker 2006.
Appreciated the Kenora shout out! Go Jets ✈️
I really wish people wouldn’t see Columbus as such a crap destination. As a bluejackets fan, I see we have a very passionate fanbase
I've been to Columbus a couple of times for WWE. Nice town. I like it.
@@katethomas1519 No, Vegas is the Jets Kryptonite. That's the team they could never beat, regular season or playoffs.
I know Rutger McGroarty personally he didn’t want to play in Winnipeg because he wanted to start in the nhl but Winnipeg wanted him in the ahl
How did that work out for him?
Tell your friend Mr.McGroarty that he hasn't earned a regular NHL shift...as the Pens recently discovered.
Lol good luck to him, maybe he'll see his first playoff game by the time he's 30. The Pens are gonna go on a very long rebuild.
The Jets have the best ownership group in the NHL. Enjoyed the vid.
So true, You nailed the angle 100 percent. Great content!
Unfortunately the fans of the Jets have been highly aware of this for the last 10+ years
Gritty players play in gritty places
WPG really has so many underrated key players/literal steal contracts
PS/ Good luck to the down to Earth Winnipeg Jets, from another country boy.
theres a reason chevy is still our gm since the return to wpg
I’m totally onboard with your theory and we all know that the playoffs require this sort of team harmony, fight for each other, and trust in the system. If they make the Finals this year I sure hope others will recognize you for the explanation as to “Why?”
I lived in Winnipeg and Kenora. As long as youre okay with -25C a few times annually its actually great.
Your kids will become geniuses at building/engineering snow
I don't know about now (I moved to Ontario years back) but it was a great place to grow up. Go Jets and Bombers.
Where's Rutger? :)
@ yup great game .I would love to visit winnipeg one day and. at catch a rangers game what a beautiful place

CGY needs to use this model as they rebuild
I think this is definitely apart of the success, but you also have to have good management as well otherwise this would apply to other undesirable markets like Buffalo, Columbus etc.
Brilliant analysis and very true. I hope Winnipeg continues its winning streak indefinitely.
howah u used to be from kenora that cool i lived there for a pretty long time now live it fort frances little town a few hours from it between kenora and thunder bay but that interesting
I'm an avs fan but I secretly root for Winnipeg for this exact reason. Feel like they have farther to go to create a successful team.
Fantastic video. I'd never thought of it like that.
Captain Lowry’s contract is the best of them all
Damn, windows pinball was the best video game button mashing reference you could think of?😂 Somebody had a deprived childhood😅
Winnipegs greatest weakness being possibly their biggest strength is very interesting. I bet there’s also very little in respect to distractions for the players playing in Winnipeg also
