I am a percussionist and have performed the Rite so many times with orchestras. This is an amazing arrangement and performance which evokes every nuance in the original orchestral score. Congratulations on a phenomenal performance which Had to be challenging and BRAVÍSSIMI to you both!! 👏🏾👌🏾🥁🪘🪇🥂🍾
Thank you so much! So kind. It brings us much joy to know people who know it as well as you do enjoy it!
Both of them are stone-incredible musicians, but damn, that marimba player. This sounds like it was taken from Stravinsky's two-piano reduction, which is my personal favorite.
Thanks so much! Very kind of you.
Yes, you’ve got a good ear - I’ve looked at the orchestra score as well as the piano four hands as I made this.
@@Xendza _Le Sacre_ is one of my all-time favorite pieces of music and I'm familiar with many versions, including Jay Bacal's MIDI version with orchestral samples. I get that the texture of a live orchestra is like nothing else, but for me, Stravinsky's harmonies are extremely important and nothing catches the clarity of those wild octatonic progressions quite like his two-piano reduction to rehearse the ballet. It's not the final version of the score (Stravinsky went on revising the Rite up through the 40s), but the version recorded in '68 by Michael Tilson Thomas and Ralph Grierson is a treasured record of my high school years. The frequency response is a little clipped and it's not sonically gorgeous, but man, all the pieces fall together, including some moments of overdubbing suggested by Stravinsky. The Jussen bros' four-hand version is phenomenal musicianship, but to my ear, there were pieces missing.
Which brings me to your version. Which, with a marimba, is like piano, fourteen fingers, LOL. But your arrangement, Ksenija, is really stellar. I sat there transfixed, hearing parts I hadn't heard (the polytonal ostinato at the beginning of Augurs), experiencing this arrangement like it was a self-contained piece, not wanting anything beyond what it was. Brava !
I've always dreamed of a serious, advanced rock band version of the Rite, without cheese. I tend to get into RUclips comment fights with people who've done cheesed up versions of the Rite, like taking snippets of themes and sticking them over a funk vamp, LOL. Or one uber-serious metal guitarist who did a metal version. I'm listening to the Augurs chord and going ... dude ... these are power chords. And he's all like super-indignant, no no no, this is a note-for-note rendering and I'm like, yeah, with a fuzz tone, LOL. You can't do big, dissonant polychords with fuzz.
I'm an odd and shifting meter fanatic, and I like avant prog bands that write 12-tone music. Your magnificent rendering of a piano-marimba Rite gives me hope that a suitable arrangement can be made for a rock quartet.
@@Snardbafulator Well, I am extremely flattered! Especially coming from someone who knows the music as well and in its many forms. Thank you so much; I love this music dearly, and it is one of my favorite works of art. It means the world to me that it resonated with you!😊
@@Xendza And it's funny how the ballet scenario is pretty much irredeemable, LOL. Mystically informed pseudo-anthropology to gratify Parisians' sense of cultural superiority by leering at those filthy, pagan Russians. May as well have been called Misogyny: A Celebration.
And yet, there's no denying the power and poignancy from that scenario woven into the music. You said in the trailer that you'd be in a percussion station banging on the tam tam during Ritual Action and sobbing. Without a shred of sentimental affectation, the music just sucks you along to the Sacrificial Dance, one of the most powerful climaxes in all of music.
It sounds like the sound of water and trees!
Great combination!
What a lovely way to describe it. Thank you!
The test of any arrangement: Is it a circus trick for fans or does it give you a new way to appreciate the original? Well, I had planned just to sample what this was like, but even just after the first bars I was so drawn into the performance that I listened to the whole piece. On the next morning I immediately put on the album on spotify. Your arrangement and performance completely captures the brilliance of Stravinsky's vision in sharp clarity and directness. But what touched me the most were the quiet passages and the colours you found in them (and which I do not find in the 2 piano version by the composer). I lack the words to describe the brilliance of the playing, not just for perfection and technique (which you have in spades), but the thrilling communication and intensity. Thank you so much for giving me an entire fresh and amazing way to fall in love all over again with a piece that first captured my imagination in 1987.
Oh my goodness - thank you for your impressions! We are so glad this spoke to you. Your question was our very own as we explored the waters for the first time. It makes us extremely happy that you heard something new in this arrangement and found it worthy of your time. 🙏🏻
I love how this allows one to hear new aspects of a work that is so well known, simply by revoicing it for two different instruments. Brava!
Thank you so much! :)
Strawinsky couldn't imagine a better birthday present than this one! The girls playing is absolutely top level. Thanks for posting and congratulations from Sao Paulo, Brazil
Thank you so much and greetings to Brazil! 💫
@@Xendza This arrangement of Rite of Spring is phenomenal 🔥The piano + marimba combination is perfect for this song, and you both captured SOOO much with just 10 fingers and 4 mallets. Your musicianship is stellar. Cheers from Boston, MA and best wishes to you both. Thank you for posting, and I'll certainly watch for tour dates further north. (I saw your upcoming dates in PA.)
@@bits-of-bass thank you for your kind words. We are so glad you enjoyed it. We hope to have more visits to the East Coast, too! 🎶
You wanna talk imagination?
Be my guest!
"Poor, poor Stravinsky!
Can not imagine his suffering if he'd listened to all of this!"
I have always wondered why more classical artists don
t take the time to learn music from memory? It makes such a difference in communication! This also points out the amazing transparency of so much of Stravinsky's incredible score!
We also absolutely believe in internalizing the music! As you mentioned - it makes a difference in communication. Music making is so much easier that way!
Absolutely great! Excellent transcription and execution. Bravo bravo!!
(The cameraman must learn not to disturb...)
Thank you! We went for a Brechtian approach to the stage. The cameraman was amazing, memorizing the music himself - couldn't have asked for better!
Sodelicious ! I m crying to watch such a beautiful work !
Thank you, that’s very kind of you. 🌷
Terrific ensemble playing. Extraordinarily sensitive and musical. Engaged and engaging. I loved every minute.
Thank you so much, dear Dr. Steele!
What an incredible performance. And such a pleasant surprise that I'd get treated to this after finishing my study time for this score, well, the orchestral one 😅
Thank you for sharing with the world. This made my entire week.
EDIT: And you mad ladies did it with no sheet music?!?! By lord. Sheer hard work and talent on that stage. 👏
Such sweet words, thank you! We are so glad that this happened at the right time for you! :)
P.S. Yep, everything is memorized! 😅 It’s much easier that way!
Oh god. THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!
Thank you so much! 😇
great...
Thank you!
Dear Ksenija and Liana! This is fantastic, brilliant, overwhelming, divine! I always must shed some tears when listening to this piece or playing some little riffs of it on the piano. But this time my tears were flowing. Thank you so much, thanks a million for this adventure!
Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts - that is so very kind of you! :)
I've been listening to several iterations of Rite of Spring as I work on a prehistoric creative project, and this might just be my favorite. The marimba/piano duo is one I don't often see but has an immaculate sound together, and brings a moodiness and vivacity to the work that many full orchestras can sometimes lose in their overformality. This was absolutely electric and I hope to see more from you two!!
Thank you so much for listening and for those thoughtful words. Very kind of you! You will definitely be seeing more from us. :)
This will go down as one of my favorites of all time. Mind-blowing. So superb! Thank you!
Thank you, Karen! That is very kind of you!
Absolutely incredible. The transcription is outstanding and the playing is too tier. Congratulations.
Thank you so much! 🎶🤍
This is off the charts.
Thanks!
Incredible! Brilliant transcription and interpretations. Conveys the heart of the piece more strongly than some orchestras I've heard!
Thank you so much! Very kind of you.
Great music! Еxcelent arrangement! Аmazing performance! Рerfect sound! Beautiful video!
Bravo!!!
Thank you so much, dear Maria! 💚
Outstanding performance dear Ksenija!!! Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you so much! 🙏
This is really an amazing experience for me in many ways. I'm very familiar with the fully orchestrated version of this amazing piece. So in my head, I can sort of faintly hear the other instruments that are usually there, but with these 2 brilliant musicians playing those two highly percussive instruments driving Stravinsky's amazing rhythms! And this is such a wonderfully MOODY piece, and its magical moodiness is so beautifully enhanced in this virtuosic, and wonderfully expressive performance. That this all from memory is just astounding. 💖💖👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Oh my goodness! Thank you for the sweet comment! 🌼 We totally understand the “ghost-like” presence of other instruments. We hear them, too. 🙃 And the work is deliciously moody, indeed!
Absolutely fantastic this arrangement and performance. The duo is excellent and beside everything you guys are playing without parts. Bravíssimo!
Thank you so much, dear Ney! So wonderful of you!
Such a great video! I find myself listening to the album repeatedly, it's an original and a classic at the same time!!
Thanks so much, dear Debra! :) So kind of you!
This might be the coolest thing I've ever seen. Thank you!
What a wonderful compliment! Thank you! 🌺
Love it - such commitment and artistry!! The Rite is a masterpiece in any form and you both brought the music to life!!! Wonderful presentation as well!!!! Congratulations!!! #GoCanes
Thank you, dearest Dr. C! 🙏🏻 This is Miami-made! 🪄
Wow! You've really captured the essence of this monumental piece. Beautiful playing and communication.

Holy crap! Incredible playing all around!
Thank you, that’s very kind!
@@Xendza Seriously, I'm blown away. I kind of skipped around to be honest but I plan on watching the whole thing soon. I wrote a percussion book on The Rite, so it's close to my heart for sure. I can't believe how bad a** the playing here is:)
@@Deech72 Haha, thank you! It is always great to e-meet a fellow who appreciates/is dedicated to The Rite!

Hi there, Andrea! The score is now available at: www.etsy.com/shop/KKMusicShop
Poor, poor Stravinsky!
Can't imagine his suffering if he'd listened to all of this!
Great musicianship, but I found the marimba mallets too hard for the lower end of the instrument. There are a number of solutions to that issue.
Thanks for the compliment! Point taken. I hope the work will have the chance to evolve through many persons’ hands. Perhaps in one of those future performances you’ll hear the exact articulation, balance, and color on the instrument that you wish!
@@Xendza I wonder if a solid rubber cored mallet might bring out the fundamental in the lower register, without losing clarity at the top? Just a thought...
