Quelle merveille!
This is my favourite performance of this sadly neglected symphony. I love especially how it seems like all the players have so much fun playing it. The emotional range of this amazing symphony is astounding.
It took me a long time to come around to this conductor, but I have to say, I have never heard him perform anything that I disapprove of. Altogether, really a wonderful conductor, in my view. He is always steady and under control and really gets a great sound out of every conductor he conducts, despite looking like Putin...poor fellow!
Beginning at 10:22 is the most ethereal, uneartherly Music I've ever held audible witness to. The rise of the Violins, in four octaves, the trills in the Celli and Violas...that BIZARRE conversation between two Flutes...as if the winds of the heavens are dancing in coalescence..Music of the subconscious here...of the UN-conscious in like. I envision Van Gogh's "Starry Night" here. They dual forms in both tangible and audible art synch in perfection. The key of B Minor is a wash, a watercolor-like blur of Blue. As is the work in azure saturation by Van Gogh. I cannot flee the Synesthesia, it tortures me daily. Colors have genders, sounds, ages and personalities. Sounds have the same. B Minor is my brother. He is good to me as is the Hunter Green D2. Solid. Masculine. My walls. My friends. If we could rid ourselves of A4, I'd be grateful. She is a diva-minded wench. But her sisters grow to Maroon in the lower octaves, higher octaves to baby pink. I need Wagner's "Prelude to Lohengrin" to live, so I will tolerate A4. Anyone understand this? Amazing performance here. Shostakovich...I love you. I hate you. I mostly love you.
If you knew how awful the piccolo part was in the end of the 5th symphony, he may have decided to give this musician a completely different part to play in this work.
I attended a performance of this sympony yesterday performed by the Münchner Philharmoniker conducted by Tugan Sokhiev. It was a beautiful evening, contrasted by Mahler's 4th Symphony. Both can be felt as "spring symphonies", one written by one who found his place, happy - the other emontionally torn, threatened in his very existence. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this recording, too. What a great piece of music!
What a brilliant performance! Astonishing clarity of all the voices is preserved (particularly in movements 2 and 3) while the rhythmical gripping momentum is given full energy. Thanks to maestro Järvi.
Und ich dachte, meinen Schosta gut zu kennen. Nein. Diese 6. ist eine echte Entdeckung. Eine Sinfonie für viele Solo- Bläser mit Streicherbegleitung koennte man sie nennen. Wunderbar
A fantastic performance by some excellent musicians who deserve some kind of award. I don't think I've heard a better performance of this work (even including the recording I have!).
The principal flautist also works with the Frankfurt Symphony. I think she does Shostakovich & Mahler particularly well with great & joyous intent and enthusiasm, has helped me realize how much Shostakovich uses the flute to carry his symphonies to such heights of delight, and is Very Cute... 🎉 ❤ 😘
how many times anyone can found an orchestra that respond so inmediately to the conductor, specially at the concert (not only in the rehearsal). this is not perfect but its absolutely full of life and energy. great Jarvi, really great
I felt like in the last movement there was some imprecision, but it was amazing to hear it performed at such speed! Bravo to the conductor and the orchestra :)
This great symphony really contains everything from the sublime to the ridiculous. The sublime melancholy of the 1st movement, and the ridiculous final theme of the 3rd movement --- was there ever anything so daft in a symphony? (Come to think of it, Haydn came close...) All together now......De-dah di-di-dah di-di-daaaaah!
Indeed, Shostakovich seems to belong among about 5 greatest symphony composers ever. 15 syms and at least 2/3 of them are absolutely first class works of 20th century - we can hardly say something like that about anyone else after Mahler.
Just as his 15th symphony is ostensibly playful but covertly malevolent, his 6th symphony seems sad and heavy but reveals itself to be one of his lighter works. It distantly reminds me of some of the feel of Mahler's 4th, one of his nature symphonies, though I know this is not apparent. I think it gets dismissed because it may get lumped in with the 5th or the 8th, or simply forgotten. But a careful listen and the delicate beauty of the first movement reveals itself followed by its raucous and genuinely scherzos. The first movement also seems to have echos of Haydn and that era of music, despite its obvious departures.
I am deeply pleased with this. USSR forever!!!!!!!!!!! (just kidding......I mean kidding about the USSSR part. it's totally awesome and i wanna thank dmitri and everyone else involved in making this recording a reality)
I don't know why the 6th symphony is not performed more often - IMO it is one of his finest! You can always rely on PaavoJarvi to give a good performance, he is one of an increasingly rare breed of conductors who never disappoints. Very good playing from this young orchestra even if their sound is a bit lightweight.
Yeah she’s always been with Frankfurt, she was probably just specially selected by jarvi for this festival orchestra since he was chief conductor over there for a while in the past and no doubt worked with her.
Interesting to see the Spanish 1st flute from the Järvi's Frankfurt Orchestra in this orchestra, 13:38 . I'm not surprised, since she's excellent. big oops for the trumpet 5:20. The horn solo 14:16 could use a little more subtlety, too.
Agree re my favorite flautist Clara Andrada de la Calle. And it's interesting that one of the violists reminds me of the composer's son Maxim. I thought the trumpeter only committed a small slur at the beginning of his note at 5:19 which didn't detract from the performance; nor did the horn passage at 14:16, although I don't recall how it sounded in other performances I've heard; I'd have to make a direct comparison.
the trumpet flub was definitely unfortunate. I believe the idea of the EFO is to mix young Estonian players with established orchestral players from German (etc) orchestras as a learning experience. That's why you see some familiar faces, such as the flautist Andrade.
I admit that I don't know her name, but I believe she is the principal flutist of the hr-Sinfonieorchester in Frankfurt (formerly the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra). I don't even believe she is Lithuanian, so she might be a guest in this performance?
Her name is Clara Andrada de la Calle, and the other commenter is correct in that she’s Spanish and likely here as a guest on Jarvi’s request as he worked with her through the Frankfurt Radio Symphony about 10 years ago
How many more nits have you picked today? Actually I can't say how the composer intended it, but I daresay he was trying for an unorthodox structure in this symphony, which essentially omits a first movement. I think Bernstein in his recording, conversely took the final two movements too slowly, and I prefer Jarvi's view.
@@ronaldbwoodall2628 No, Bernstein used a slow first movement, a moderate 2nd movement, and a fast 3rd movement, not a slow movement and two fast movements. You can't say how the composer intended it? I can.
Sadly, this is something of a sloppy performance. 1st Trumpet blew a note in the first movement, while the piccolo player straight up forgot to play a phrase in the second. The tempos of the third movement are weird too, along with some messy playing throughout. I love this symphony and it deserves to be heard more, but I feel like it also deserves better than what Mr. Järvi and company gave it.

I think this is the happiest Shostakovich symphony (the finale is truly happy, unlike in the 5th for example). What a great performance
yes, greatly surprised me when I first heard it. Almost the "carefree" whimsy of Prokofiev.
This is my favourite performance of this sadly neglected symphony. I love especially how it seems like all the players have so much fun playing it. The emotional range of this amazing symphony is astounding.

Thank you! I found.

Wow - what a ride. Thanks to the conductor and the dedicated talented orchestra.
I was there. Incredible playing and conducting on the highest level. Terviseks on Estonia's 99th birthday!
This piccolo player's intonation is incredible. That solo in the first movement is so tough and she nailed it.

@@lisaragsdale1530 And then he thought, 'you know what I'll do a two piccolo solo at the end of the first movement in the 10th' just to ram it home
@@stephenkenny1647 Not to mention the death-ray piccolo fifths in the 4th symphony!
I played both and the 6 is definitely more difficult than the 5!

this sounds like an embryonic version of the 10th, the slow, long drawn out themes, the dark moods, and a hectic, crazy circus-like ending.

Lightweight? Are you kidding me? Believe me, live it was not lightweight. Of course it's not a huge orchestra but the bass sound was incredible.
Outstanding performance with great energy. Love the principle cellist...she's enjoying herself the entire way!
Even though the last movement was a bit too fast for me, this was an excellent performance from such a young orchestra!
Young orchestras play better than old ones. Like football teams.

But it makes it that much more invigorating and life-affirming!

Il finale e un puo meglio, pero troppo gallope! E i 3/8 deve essere il tempo precedente!
It is a mistake to take the 2nd movement this fast. That way, the symphony has two fast movements in a row, and isolates the first movement.
