as someone who has attempted before: GOD this is so accurate to how it feels right before you try to end it. most people probably envision someone terrified or having an extreme mental breakdown or something right before killing themselves, but most of the time you're just... at peace with it. you don't know what's next, but that doesn't matter. you're about to find out.

I DON'T KNOW if anyone else has WRITTEN IT ALL OUT yet, but I think the reason this is the second to last song is because the NURSE from the quiz is the next character and refraction girl's attempt leads into her SURVIVING and being hospitalized. she's the second to last because she embodies the path each TPTM girl takes: Attempting to take their own lives, but failing and getting help.

I like how much slower the reveal for the character portrait is here, there’s almost a sluggishness to it, like the characters exhaustion is reflected in the MV.

The use of miku v2 here is really pleasant, I remember her voice in a lot of beautifully bleak songs about depression and suicide back in the day, it really captures that sort of nostalgia and sad beauty. Wonderful work

I find it very fitting that her pose is both of her arms crossed over her heart. That pose is used for the deceased when they’re in their final resting place and ready to go back to the next stage.

she's clearly singing about taking her life (her metamorphosis being about freeing herself from her pain), or at least leading up to an attempt. yet the song is so calm, like she's come to terms with her end that's coming. still the last part of the song repeating the same words sounds like it could be hesitation, or desperation and yearning, maybe a mix of both. and i can understand that feeling so well but it's so hard to put into words, that's one of the things i love most about this album. it kind of hurts that it's soon coming to an end :') but this song is really beautiful and i want to show my love for it

As someone who is brown skinned, it hits very hard. Given the fact that the topic of mental health issues is sometimes not taken so seriously when it comes to folks of color- especially folks with black/brown skin. Majority of the time when the topic is discussed, people mostly think of victims of poor mental health who are white/white passing, but theres not a lot of discussion regarding victims who arent white nor are there a lot of figures that they could look up to and feel represented by, making the struggles seem much more lonely

I KNOW RIGHT??? i immediately jumped seeing this. like yeah it's so hard to see mental health help in the context of (at least my) POC culture. i was looking for resources about mental health the other day, and it was all tailored to the attitudes that r common in western culture. especially with the attitude that caring about mental health is a western invention, it makes it feel really isolating. i really like that line

In different cultures the idea of mental health care and the people who suffer from it is just a western/american thing and that it "doesnt truly exist" which ofc its a very wrong thing to believe and ANYONE can struggle with that. But constantly getting told that its just a western thing + not hearing a lot of voices/seeing a lot of figures from said culture really makes someone think they are the only one suffering through that.
I am really sorry that it is difficult trying to find resources and help, i wish you the best and that you know you are absolutely not alone in this battle

I think the most chilling thing about her is her page on the TPTM carrd. Every other character seen so far has an entire paragraph describing their struggles, but hers is incredibly short, only being two sentences. We don't even know what drove her to her... Metamorphosis attempt.

I left a comment but I'm pretty sure it got deleted because I dared to use the dreaded S-word sighhhh... anyways, this song is such a heartbreakingly accurate depiction of depression and ideation. When you're that sad and lonely for that long, you don't think, "I don't want to live". More so, "I don't want to live THIS LIFE". Because, deep down, you DO want to live. You want to breathe and be free and go outside and make friends and find love and experience life the fullest. You WANT to be happy. But you just... can't. And if you can't, why stick around? It's an aspect to ideation that's never talked about, but is reflected beautifully in Refraction Girl. Amazing work as usual

This hits so incredibly hard as a black girl who was struggled with mental health for years
this is kinda silly, but the part when she starts repeating "my metamorphosis will be-" over and over reminds me of this meme i saw where it's the two guys on the bus and the sad one says "this never would've happened if i had just killed myself when i was 14" and the happy one is also saying "this never would've happened if i had just killed myself when i was 14" as in all these good and happy experiences he's had would've never happened if he had died, so he's happy to be alive. that part of the song reminds me of that, cause her tone gets almost happier here at 3:03 even though she's repeating the same phrase as before, if that makes sense?
The aquarium footage is so beautiful, so is this girl. Her song ending suddenly yet slowly and gently is sort of reminiscent of a sudden death, but a serene death at that…? She accepts her implied demise so calmly, too…
i love how calm this song sounds compared to the others!! really reminds me of how depression takes your energy, making you feel slower in a way.

"this is all there is for the rest of your life. this is it." at the beginning is devastating... in love with this girl, the sound, the water theming, the DESIGNNN... she resonates so hard not *exactly* in the "this is like me fr" way but in the "this WAS me" way. what an odd feeling
Ooooooogh the entire second half of the song sounds like someone being fed up of their current state and choosing to crawl forward if they have to, and the fact that the song mentions metamorphosis and we've got one girl left. I'm so fucking excited for the ending of this album
this song is such the bestest comfort considering i suffer from some signs of depression and the comforting imagery of fishes is just really hitting my heart in the best way that made me cry

one thing i like about this song is how short it feels. it feels like one of the shortest songs despite being slow-paced, but it's actually the second longest song behind caliber (who is also coincidentally the oldest). i think its pretty poetic with how depression can cut your life short and make life feel like its slipping away too fast, while also making life feel way too long, long "enough" for it to end.
she's said so little in the time she has. the breaks and the pauses and repetition all reflect that low energy that comes with depression too. i feel like this song especially communicates the struggles of nataana through the music and video more than through the lyrics, unlike the other songs. there's nothing more she can say about her issues. she hardly even talks about herself or her past experiences. probably because it doesn't matter to her anymore
i kind of like the combination of her not talking about any past experiences and the "guess I'm just unhappy". depression without really having a "reason" to be depressed. its rlly relatable to a lot of people i feel

i'll make a comment about the online quiz here since it was made available when this song was released. it was so so touching to finally have names to put to each of the girls and hear an outside voice speak about their positive qualities outside of their own perspectives. it makes me really excited for the final song on the album :]
there's such a bittersweetness to the line "i'm going alone". to me it's both the inherent sorrow of it and the comfort of feeling like your loved ones will go on living, even without you. at least that's how i felt when i had my attempt.
this song feels like a cold rainy day. all of the songs on this album resonate with me lyrically but i really think the instrumental especially captures the like...constant melancholy of being passively su*cidal in a way i can feel in my soul.

What's not said Is what is said. This is a song for the parts of ourselves we have in passing glimpses. Unconscious. Something so integral but as fleeting as the darkness in the blink of an eye. The ocean as vast and as many wonders it holds, can be the thing to take away something so precious. With a view of the lack of the self, total finality for an unfinished human, is the cold and frozen touch of death.
This series is partially what helped me discover how it feels to be human. To think it's almost over is strange but I'm glad to have been on the ride all this time I hope everyone takes care of themselves.
I'm in a much better place in my life now, I can enjoy this without spiraling, but man... This song resonates with me. "No more treatment no more waiting." hit me on a spiritual level.

This song reminded of the time when i was going to walk my dog before sleep and then i just.. Couldn't walk anymore because of how heavy it felt. Not because of how tired i was at the moment but because of how tired i was in gemeral. From everything that has been happening in my life. I just laid to this deep snow that almost fully covered me and felt like i couldn't even move an inch. It wasn't cold, even though it was freezing (like 5°F or so? I can't remember now), it felt like right thing to do - just lay here and freezing to death because i had no purpose of life, no power to get up, no will to do so either. I've never felt so calm and peaceful after this. I wanted to become just a part of this snowy field we walked on. The only thing that stopped me was my partner who asked me to at least send him voice messages to let him know that im still here and pity for little creature that wanted to go home. Mother would never know about this and it will be always only between us three - me, my partner amd my dog.
Yet, i'm thinking about that to this day and wish that i just stayed in that snow.

this is probably going to be my first, and my only comment on a tptm album. i started crying tears of joy because even though i already had 2 characters on the song i related to this one hit the hardest and it made me feel like i finally found myself and who i was and that i'm not actually going crazy /gen
my original theory about this song being about plurality was like, half correct, because there are definitely lines and even character page details that i have connected with that aspect but also know that the song has multiple clear meanings besides that one... like about finding who you are and being unable to see yourself in anybody else, about depression and the comptimlations of harming yourself like... maybe that's what refractions were all about, signifying that the song has multiple meanings attached to it.

I've been a long time fan of the Post Traumatic Manifesto, seeing people talk about things that are normally shushed and not taken seriously makes me happy. This project got me through a lot, and I can honestly relate to a lot of the characters, I'm so excited to hear the new girl's song ^_^
the way the reveal happens when the song goes silent, and right after the singer asks, almost timidly, "whats left when life isnt for me" ITS LIKE SHES DIRECTLY ASKING THE VIEWER UGHHH WEEVIL THE ARTIST YOU ARE
Big fan of the visuals. The shot at the end brings me a sense serenity. I assume she drowns herself but I can see the peace she was looking for.

Haven’t posted a theory on what the song is about in advance before but I haven’t seen anyone else do it, so here goes!
Refraction is what happens when a wave of light is deflected from a straight path into a situation with a different velocity.
As such, this girl is likely someone who had a specific line as to where her life was going, only for some dramatic change in her life that flipped it upside down, destroying the original plan and leaving her confused. Perhaps based on the pandemic, or an accident, or war, or someone she cares about dying while she was still young giving her an early taste of grief, or some combination of those themes.
A second theory is that this girl is a system, and I bring this up because Wedevildoing has stated plurality plays a role in the story, but that the girls are all separate people, which makes me think that one girl’s song is about her being a system, and this is the second to last girl, so
These two theories could co-exist, as dissociative identity disorder is caused when one experiences a traumatic situation as a young child, so
ur first theory is very plausible bc the ocean symbolizes chaos i think, and maybe the butterfly is her trying to hold it to her chest like it's a new beginning bc butterflies symbolize those :D

listening to this is so peaceful. the progression of the song sounds resolute... like the decision has already been made. it is almost ironic, but the soothing beginning made me want to close my eyes and fall asleep. i am sure the girl thinks the same thing but with a different context. towards the end... the tone gets louder and messier like voices fighting against the action... and then it's quiet. the song is over. such beautiful and heartbreaking storytelling. Weevildoing, your songwriting skills have improved so much over the course of this album. i am greatly looking forward to the final song!

Thinking about how someone else says the incomplete sentence being at the end being about how her life is incomplete. And i feel like theres two sides to that coin
The the original one, the probably intended meaning. Being that her life being incomplete meaning its unfulfilled.
But there's another side. An incomplete sentence can still be completed. The sentence isnt over, isnt it? Meaning, her life isn't over. As long as your still alive, that sentence is still able to be completed.
It may feel like it's over, but its not. Not yet. Not until *you* end it.
No mater how bad it gets, as long as your heart is beating, the sentence of your life isn't complete.
I hope that makes sense.
In my view, I think the incomplete sentence is kind of a representation of her not knowing what's going to happen. She knows where she's going, but she doesn't know how it's going to be like, if it's going to be better than where she is now or worse, so she can't describe her metamorphosis.
I also agree with your take though, that sentence is the last thing that she says in the song so it leaves it without a clear conclusion, and since the song is supposed to describe her struggles and overall life, the part in wich the describes the end of it is incomplete because deep down, she knows that it doesn't have to be over. She tries to convince herself that this is supposed to happen, but the moment she has to say the final part and say the reason of why she's ending it all, she decides to not finish the sentence.
The thing that I find so interesting tho ((and also heartbreaking)) is that after she says this sentence, she starts to repeat it over and over again and the song starts to get intense. It's like she's trying to stop herself from doing the act since she realized that she didn't finish her reason but convinces herself to do it anyways as she feels like she has no other choice.
I can't even imagine how painful that would be to go through...
I know this may be corny but finding your songs today may have saved my life, especially this one and splitter girl, I was recently thinking of committing but seeing that there are people out there suffering just like me and they also deserve sympathy is one of the things I really needed to hear, thank you

coming back from the hospital to listen to this was a wonderful moment i wont lie
anyway i think this one resonates with me the most, in terms of the topic AND the song in general. its made in that "star" sounding way that my brain likes to come up with (a song that sounds like sparkles, or the ocean, or stars... idk why i had combined those in my mind but i did), yet the topic makes it feel much more sad than most songs with that "vibe" are(? at least the ones ive heard ...)
its a genuinely beautiful song and the way i can relate hurts, yet enhances the experience at the same time

jordyn (disposable) was tired of always being everyone's last option, of always being left out and feeling ugly. her attempt- which i personally hc was a spur-of-the moment attempt- was born out of a desire to be different- to be prettier, better, to be more "worth" loving.
kairi (irreverent) was tired of the pain and trauma that came with co's religious upbringing, of constantly feeling disgusting and impure for having sexual desire. co's attempt was born of a desire to be different- to be clean and pure.
tahira (splitter) was tired of having violent thoughts towards the people around her, herself, and doing things that she thinks made her a bad person while not being able to live up to it. her attempt was born out of a desire to be different- to prove to someone, maybe just herself that she wasn't a coward, to escape her intrusive thoughts, and to escape from the life she hadn't even planned to live.
mayra (taxidermy) was tired of suffering due to trauma they don't even remember, tired of feeling impure and disgusting while still not being able to enjoy sexual activity due to that guilt, and tired of being "female" in a world that pins so many expectations onto you as a result. their attempt was born out of a desire to be clean, to be pure again- to be reborn as something pure and beautiful.
nataana (refraction) was tired of their chronic depression- never feeling happy or fufilled no matter how hard they tried, no matter the work and effort she put into things she loves, and no matter how many treatments they get. her attempt was born out of a desire to be different- they want to be happy, to be able to live life like others do, but (at the time of their attempt) firmly believes it'll never happen. what's the point in wasting time in a world you've never felt like you belong in?
refraction girl's song ends with "my metamorphosis will be" repeated i think 17 times in total. I think this part of the song doesn't JUST represent her own struggles, but it represents all of the other characters who attempted.
all of their attempts, in some way, were due to a desire to change, to morph into something new, and what they'd consider better. turning from a small caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly.

Some thoughts, not based in anything or a serious analysis.
The ocean isn’t itself alive, but is full of alive things, being the marine life. That’s what a lot of my depression makes me feel like, like you’re just floating through life and temporary feelings and thoughts live in you.
The ocean muffles sound, creating a quiet atmosphere- which is what depression is like for me. It’s not some crazy emotional burst, just constant dread and pressure. Also mimicking the literal pressure of the ocean.
Refraction of light, something changing shape despite perception. She is not dead, but she is talking about how she will be when she kills herself- Her death is the refraction, it’s not really there but she can still see it- can see it happening, being the ideation

Ouchie, as someone who has been hospitalized for suicidal thoughts and was close to ending it I feel this song so well. I love how melancholy and calming the melody is, it’s reminiscent of the moment of clarity terminally ill patients get before passing on. Maybe her mind is finally clear because she knows exactly what’s coming next?
I also hope you’re doing well weevil, these songs convey pretty hard feelings 💙

i find how her journal entry being just two sentences - "i don't want to do this anymore. i'm going somewhere better" so interesting in contrast to everyone else's rants. all the other pages give us some insight in who they're like as people, but... we know nothing about RG. i think. i think she's fucking dead dude.
At most we know basic info like her irl name and age, and that she may or may not have played a Fender guitar at some point, it's... i don't know, I'm still shocked
I've seen people interpret the song more as her moving forward. I'd like to think she's just logged off of the internet after backing away from an attempt and that we have to trust that she's alive still, if only because the song has a warning for suicidal ideation but not for an actual attempt
This one really got to me in a way that none of the girls have since Chocolate Box Girl. A lovely song that makes a pit of dread form in my stomach once I think about the lyrics.

Imo, the ending of the song sounds hopeful. Like the character is determined to make a change in their life for what they see as "better", metaphorically going through their own form of metaphorphosis in life. While the phrase being uncompleted leaves a lot up to a lot of interpretation. Their "metamorphosis" could also be their transition between life and death, like a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly.

this reminds my of sky fish by siinamota/powapowa-p in the best way possible. it makes so much sense that this song is by far the most peaceful in the album, having a nostalgic feeling, like refraction girl has accepted her own life being over and has learned not to fear death and instead find peace in it ;;; my thoughts r very scrambled right now but like. god it fits so much. it fits insanely so much
i think there's this stereotype that people who are suicidal are insanely mentally unstable and depressed right up until the moment they kill themselves but in my experience that's just not true. when you get to that final moment where you have a plan and you're acting it out all of the stress just kind of dissolves into a broken sense of peace, this song like. physically feels like how my emotional state was when i actually attempted. "i know where i'll be going, i'll be going home" i'm going to stab myself holy fuck that line is just so amazing
