Pre-9/11 Visit to World Trade Center

- This is a compilation of footage from our family visit to the World Trade Center. All of these clips were filmed on July 5th 2001, just 2 months before the attacks of 9/11.
The beginning of the film is from a double decker tour bus through NYC. One of the stops was at the World Trade Center and we decided to get off. We bought tickets to the observatory at the top of the South Tower.
There are then some shots looking outside the windows of the South Tower from one of the top floors. The North Tower is prominent in this footage and at one point you can see guests dining in the Windows on the World Restaurant.
There is then a shot from one of the upper stories of the South Tower where there were coin operated binoculars to view the city. Following this is footage from the observatory deck. In one now eerie moment, a passenger airliner is pointed out close to the tower and filmed.
This was a very beautiful and calm day in New York City. Very different from how things would be just 2 months later.
This was filmed on a JVC GR-DVF31U camera. I captured the video from the camera using a Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR.

And 4:20 gave me hardest chills I've ever had: "There's another one!"
If you had ever been up there you would have seen planes, you have two air ports literally right there and newark... it was, and is very common.
For everyone who knows what the world was like when this video was taken, I wish we could go back. Simpler times
@@H_n_red In many ways though, it was a simpler time. No social media, not so many distractions, not everyone had a mobile/cell phone, security was far more relaxed, there are so many different things that have changed, some for the better, and some not.

@@H_n_red We had fewer whiners and people actually respected others opinions and never took offence at harmless comments. A much simpler and better time the late 90s up to 2001.
In many ways it was simpler times and in many ways it wasn’t simpler times. People are often nostalgic for the past.

Very very eerie.
We visited in 1998 and saw a small plane (probably an executive jet) flying up the Hudson well below the height of the towers. I have a photo of it. You knew you were high up when you were looking down at aircraft.
These camera angles really put into perspective just how insanely massive these buildings were.
That zoom in on the people dining at Windows on the world really made me sad. Knowing that there were people sitting at those same tables enjoying their breakfast in the morning of 9/11 plus the staff and nobody who was in windows of the world made it out :(
Windows was closed that day. There was catering though for the conference.

The manager of WOTW was off that day and he says he feels guilty that all his friends died.
Most memorable moment: "Son, shut up. Where's your mother?"
I'm not scared of heights in general but extreme heights like this scare me even on a video.

Around 1:00 in the kids start saying don't look down and the other says it's not scary then the other says Well if your falling it would be you idiot! I know it's just banter between kids but in hindsight remembering the people who did fall /jump on 9/11 it's creepy to hear. Great video btw it's nice to see the towers when they were still standing tall.
It would be hard enough to make the decision to have to jump or be burned alive. To be a child and faced with this would be even worse.
I caught that too! It's one of the things that haunts me most about that day. I don't want to even imagine how bad it had to be that jumping was a better death.

Seeing the inside of the buildings, especially the observation deck with all the tourist stuff is so eerie to me. Knowing how it would all be obliterated in just over 2 months makes me so sad, and always will. These were such cool buildings. I wish I could have seen them for myself....
Those gorgeous towers.. forever in my heart. NYC the greatest place in the world. What a beautiful bittersweet memory this family has. 20 years today. RIP 🇺🇸
That has to make a knot in your stomach when you watch this knowing you and your family were at the top of a building that 2 months later would come down in tragedy. I hope all of you are doing well today
Thank you so much for posting this. I really enjoyed it a lot. I've been looking at a lot of videos of the twin towers this year, 2019, for the first time since 911. This was so nice, so spontaneous, so nonchalant, so natural and so candid. I loved it. Just a lovely family enjoying the day together and having fun. What a beautiful bright happy video!!!!
I visited the towers many times,just as a New Yorker in awe! The observation deck,the shopping. It was breathtaking.
I visited the Observation Deck with my Mom&seeing this video sends chills down my spine. I remember those windows! The view! The cafe across from the observation deck where people enjoyed snacks.

That is a bit eerie as 2 months later the airplanes would be lower than the roof of the twin towers.
Those kids saying "don't look down" and "it's not scary" are probably close to my age. I was 8 in 2001, they sounded maybe 6-8 years old, born 1992-1995.

I remember my mom taking me home from school that day. I remember seeing her look up a lot and I asked her why she kept doing that. And she told me looking for planes. Will never forget.

One of the very few mercies granted on 9/11 was that the first plane hit before this place, the observation deck/gift shops on 106 and 107 + the roof observation deck, opened. Had AA11 hit half an hour later the Trade Center would’ve had so many more tourists, so many more people would’ve been clocked in for work.
Anybody who got to experience the observatory deck before 9/11 is truly lucky. What a view. It’ll never be the same

I had just started dating a girl who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. We were supposed to go out Sunday night and since I was starting a new business and working my ass off I said how about Monday night. She said ok. We went out and had a late night. She woke up in the morning and ended up running late and missed her train. She said I will just drive in. Well we know the rest. She was on the expressway by the midtown tunnel when the planes hit. If she was not late to work she would have been among the many. Sadly, she needed meds and really started to lose it in the weeks and months after. All her friends were gone.
Wondering how she is doing now know she must’ve been traumatized think so many more could’ve been saved had that stairwell info been relayed by the emergency officials in WTC 2

Very very eerie... I got the chills as well!!! I can't imagine the look on that boys face few weeks later when the very spot there standing was hit by a plane on fire and people were dying and leaping to their death. Sad.... 20 years is coming up in one more week!!!

Yo this is probably the highest quality video I've ever seen of the indoor observatory. Really cool place, most people don't realize all that was up there with the plants and the restaurants and the little model/museum part.
I'll always wished they rebuilt it.

The zoom in on the ground below makes me feel a little sick tbh, Specially considering what happened and what all those people must of went through....truly traumatic. I love all the home videos of the two twin towers, It's really great to see them in all their glory......It's literally a whole different time and world.
It gave me chills when he panned all the way down to the bottom when they were inside, that would’ve been the height people would jump in order to avoid flames and smoke just 2 months later. And to think they were just tourists enjoying themselves, completely unaware of that this visit in the Twin Towers would be the only time they’d ever get to experience it.
1:17 there's just no building with a view like this, it was unique. Just imagine how it would be to see the other tower directly beside you and then looking to the bottom, that most be an amazing experience and it will be lost forever. The only close thing is the petronas towers but there have totally different fassade
Yes, that's exactly true -- the buildings were iconic, and the views were utterly breathtaking. I went to the top of South Tower prob 2-3 times between the '70s (as a kid) and the '90s as an adult (and I worked about 5 blocks south of the towers for 3 years, so I walked through the WTC mall twice every day as my PATH [NJ-NY subway] station was in the basement).
I would've gone up quite a bit more often if I'd known what was to later transpire. Those buildings were solid as rocks, it seemed nothing short of an apocalypse could bring them down, so like most people, I just assumed they'd be there almost forever -- at least longer than my lifetime.
I visited the Sears Tower (or whatever it's called now, LOL) in the summer of '97 while on a business trip to Chicago. It's an iconic building in its own right, but it just wasn't the same: There's no observation deck, so you just view everything below through glass windows and, as you point out, it's a single structure.
I haven't yet made it to Freedom Tower, but I do plan on going eventually, as it's gorgeous and also affords amazing views from the top deck, judging from pics I've seen. But yeah -- no matter how awesome it may be, it won't be the same as the Twin Towers.
As far as I remember, the South Tower collapsed before the North Tower.

Yes. The North Tower was hit at 8:46 am (tower with the antenna). The South Tower was hit at 9:03 am (this building in the video). The South Tower collapsed at 9:59 am (56 minutes after impact). The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 am (102 Minutes after impact).
south tower collapsed first because the plane crashed on lower floors (more weight on the weakened thrusses) they would have gone down even faster if they hit it even lower. plus alot more casualties from people stuck above impact zone
The sad part is that they had enough time to leave the building after the impact to the north tower. Unfortunately nobody knew USA was under attack by that time, so most people remained in their offices.

I shivered in the part that focuses on the plane, little did they know what was going to happen in these towers involving commercial planes on 9/11 I was 4 years old and it was one of the memories that never left my head those planes hitting the wtc, watching the television here in BRAZIL
Those buildings were amazing but there’s no way in hell would u have got me up there. Nice to see people just enjoying there day and getting on not knowing what was to come.

I wonder if any of the people filmed on the top floor of the North Tower survived on September 11.
I’m pretty sure some people made it by being late, calling out, etc. However anyone in or above the impact zone of the North Tower that day died as a result of all of the stairway access at those points being destroyed by the impact of the plane.

@@A17YT That was the south tower. 18 people above the impact found a stairwell that had not been destroyed by the plane and escaped. Everyone above the impact zone in the north tower died.
No one survived above impact on the North Tower. All stairwells and elevators were damaged.
Nobody survived above the impact zone in the North Tower. All elevators and stairwells were destroyed in the plane impact trapping hundreds. Also, nobody survived on floor 92, although intact, it was consumed by fire.
We will never forget!!!

A beautiful video and a wonderful view but strange and eerie the people that were on the tower who could’ve ever think that years later people who were there a few days before would’ve ever imagined 20 years later that they may have been in that building God bless all the people❤️❤️❤️❤️
I wasn’t born then I was 2004 but I would have loved to visit the World Trade Center it looks amazing plus the world would be better in many ways.

You can already see the stage built up in the plaza which was there on 9/11 also. Must have been a few weeks or days pre 9/11 when they visited... also the quality of the footage is an indication of 2001.

I can't imagine what people were thinking when they were on the top of the trade center towers the day the planes hit the towers. I'm sure they were scared to death and I'm sure they died because they could not get down when the first plane hit plus the people in both towers. SUCH A SAD REMINDER ALWAYS. RIP.

The observation deck were not open when the plane did crash, and even if it were the tourist would get out of there right after the first crash into North building.

This is probably one of the last ever videos of the twin towers in peace time it’s so sad our horrible and evil world we live in and have created!
There are more recent ones I've seen. Lots of people visited the towers and lots of people took video.
My mother went to NYC for her first time for work and took my dad with her at the end of August 2001. I’d already had a bad year so she offered to take me back in late September for my birthday. We never made it. On 9/11 itself her photos were still at the developer-shots of the mall below ground, the courtyard, towers behind them from the Empire State, etc. We compared her shots with aftermath photos in a copy of a magazine and it was just astonishing.
And now Joe Biden has created a safe haven for terrorists and gifted them $85 billion worth of cutting edge military hardware.

I was there twice in one week, by chance, in July of 2001, on the roof of T2 I said to my brother, "Imagine a jetliner hitting this..." That brother jumped to his death off of the Gorge Bridge (Rio Grande) 9/11/05; on 9/11/06, my second daughter was born. I had more than just one premonition about WTC from 1986 on up to 2001; the last one was I was with my best friend and I was OUT OF MY TREE...he's like, "What is WRONG with you??!!" "There's going to be a MAJOR terrorist attack in Manhattan!!", I replied. He told me not to call him any more, but then it happened. All he could say was, "Youuu were right, youuu were right...."

@@VanillaEarth744 Thank you. That brother was my half brother. His father (my first step-father), was involved in organized crime. He murdered my father in 1970 (I still investigate it to this day), and married my mother. They made it look like a suicide, by parking his car on a bridge just south of Hartford, CT (but my dad's body was found washed ashore on Penikese Island, 140 miles away). So when his son jumped off of a bridge, of all ways to commit suicide, God took care of business, because it devastated his father, the way that the murder devastated so many others. My mother's children no longer talk to her, she practices witchcraft also we found out. It's crazy.
Those buildings will be missed, but the new World Trade Center is still very beautiful.
