    I've had so many questions regarding these two bikes! So I thought I would put a short preview video together talking about the specs and an initial impression of how the Triumph Trident 660 stacks up against Honda's CB650R.
    I hope to get a Triumph Trident and 2021 Honda CB650R early next year and will be doing a comprehensive head to head video, so don't forget to SUBSCRIBE so that you don't miss it!
    More detailed specifications of each bike are below.
    2021 Triumph Trident 660:

    Although the Triumph Trident's looks are slightly more eye catching, I'd go with the Honda for all the "down the road " reasons. Parts availability, aftermarket possibilities, reputation of reliability, inspiring confidence and bang for the buck satisfaction. Honda motors are just that good, without hesitation to say so.

      Very true, heard some horror stories about Triumphs customer service dept. Otherwise I may have preferred the triumph.

      There is additional point about dealerships. I imagine that in UK you will be fine with Triumph but for me it would be 1 or 2 for the entire country. I really don't fancy a 4 hour drive for service just for the 3 cylinder sound.

      @1Scuter I'm more of a Yamaha fan but Honda is the one company were you can get a longer aftermarket warranty on a secondhand bike, I imagine they've done their research.

    the trident looks great but i would rather a nice triumph badge or logo than the big tank graphic

    As a previous CBR600RR and CB500F owner I respect Honda's quality and reliability. But as a previous Sprint ST and Street Triple R owner Triumph makes the more engaging machine by far. I think the Trident is the winner for me.

    Took them both. I thought it would be hard. But after 5 minutes on the Triumph, I was sold. It is just something special to ride!

    Had a first version Street Triple - super solid bike and very fun engine, but ultimately the ergos were just too harsh (I'm 66 with a three level cervical fusion). The Trident looks great and I should be fine on it.
    I've owned three modern Triumphs (2001 Bonny, 2000ish 955 RS, 2006 Street) and the only failure I experienced was a coil on the Bonny, and that was well after I sold it to a friend. He swapped that and rode it for another 10 years with no trouble before selling it as he was just too old.

    Thank you for doing this comparison (I'm one of them who requested the comparison. :-)). After viewing this video, I guess I'm test riding both to see which one I prefer. As a new rider, I currently ride a used Honda Rebel 300. I was leaning towards Triumph Trident 660 as my next bike so I can try something different than a Honda. Decision, decision, decision...

    I have the cb650r and love it. Everything works and the engine sound it lovely. I love the triumph 660 looks but I wonder about quality. I looked at triumph before the 660 and found that the price, financing and especially insurance was too expensive. Honda gave me a great price and free insurance for one year.

      Triumph said they have concentrated very hard on quality and fit and finish on the Trident. Only time will tell on that one.

      Its going to be opposite in my country. Cb is going to be really expensive and triumph is giving great finance offer. It starts from only 10000 rupees (137 usd) per month. But service is big issue if you aren't living in certain cities or close to those cities

    IMO you can't go wrong with either bike, though the Trident specs seem to give it the edge but I believe both are miles ahead of the MT-07, SV650 and Z650.

    Styling is always subjective but I like the look of the triumph. Flatter torque curve lighter weight adds up to more easily accessible fun. I think the triumph would be the better first bike and the Honda maybe a better stepping stone for those who want to end up with a supersport.

    Personally I prefer the look of the CB more, it looks more aggressive. Also it seems like the CB looks bigger? Can't say for sure about the size until I can get see one in real life. But the electronic and the torque of the Trident is tempting me!

    I was between the 2 . But I think I made up my mind for the Trident. Tomorrow I'll go and preorder one. Grey colour is my favourite

    Hi Dan!, thank you for this! I can’t wait for the side by side / back to back comparison! Still on the fence but leaning towards the CB650R because of Honda reliability and tons more of aftermarket support. Can’t wait for January (or February as our local dealer says) to be able to sit on the Trident at the showroom. More power to you sir!

      And I think the handling of the Trident (might be wrong as I’m no expert) might be largely attributed to the better stock tires... maybe.

      @@be989 The stock tyres on the Honda are pretty decent but I've used Road 5's before on many bikes which didn't feel as agile as the Trident. Long story short, the Trident has Triumphs excellent handling that has made the Street Triple so popular. It feels very similar to a Street Triple.

    I like the Triumph because Triumph starts with T for “ The one I like “
    And Honda starts with. H for “ Have had many Honda’s already “

    It is definitely between these two for my first bike, I love both of them and it seems to be hard to pick a winner, although slight edge to the Trident for styling and 🇬🇧

      start on a lower cc bike, unless you are a very responsible person who also understands, "You will most likely drop your bike because it's your first".

      If you've never ridden any kind of dirtbike/scooter, I'd agree with those recommendations for something more like a Z400 or R3, find one used, ride the beans out of it, you'll likely have some slow speed flops and what not learning the ropes. If you've ridden other motorbikes and been through that, then go for it

      Passed my test this year. I’ve bought the cb650r! Done 3,600 miles between Aug - October. Can’t recommend it enough, power is top end so unless you really throttle it it’s really manageable. Fantastic beginner to intermediate bike

    I'm not in the market for a bike but enjoy looking about. There are several comments here about Triumph's unreliability. I have an 18 year old Triumph Sprint RS with over 40K miles on it and I've never been left high and dry. As for which bike here has 'better performance,' higher bhp at higher revs do not equal better performance, just a different delivery of power.

    I bought a 2023 Triumph Trident, I love the sound and handling. My other bike is 2021 S1000RR Race, but for some reason, I enjoy riding
    Triumph more! Trident is more of an everyday nimble, comfortable and pleasant bike. It's also very pillion friendly.

      @@Omar-kw5ui cause you live in a different country. If I buy a cb650r I will have one of the most expensive motorcycles in my country. People can't afford good bikes cause the Government charges 40 to 60% duty so yea u wanna keep a bike her as long as possible. I know people who still drive their 1985 magnas from when they were kids

      @@TeoSluga thats probably true but ill do my best to take care of it and keep it under a roof and I think in that case it should last me that long. I have a 2007 kawasaki right now and it still has all the original plastic pieces but I just got it painted

      @@TeoSluga it doesn’t matter where the plastic is made, what matters is the type of plastic, what formula they use. And as long as its the same type of plastic that Honda uses on all their products, then it won’t make a difference where its made.

      @@TeoSluga doesn't matter if its a cheap model or an expensive model. Plastic is plastic. Plastic is cheap, and making it in Thailand offsets the fact that you need to sell the whole bike cheap. That means you can keep the same quality materials.
      Also if Honda cheaped out on less expensive products, they wouldn't have their reputation of top notch reliability would they. It takes 1 product to ruin the image of a whole company.

    I've owned three Hondas and three Triumphs, so I don't have a huge bias either way. I think, however, that a triple is my favorite engine configuration, so I would go for the Triumph. The biggest thing swaying me toward the Triumph, though, is that Triumph dealerships allow test rides while Honda does not. I won't buy it if I can't ride it.

    For street performance a triple > 4 cylinders. The triples power is more accesible at lower speeds and revs..

    CB650R used to be on my 2nd bike's list but since Trident blew the competition away, I can't get my thoughts out from it.

      @@Englishbikerdan Triumph does know how to make such a bike. Plus, all the electronics with lower price instead traction control only. By the way, thanks for making a comparison video between CB650R and Trident 660. I can now own it with ton of reasons.

    I'm shopping for a bike in this category but decided against the Honda CB650R because I don't want to have to rev it up high to get anything out of it. I like a bike that will run hard when you ask it to, but still has some decent torque on the low end. That said, I might end up getting something bigger, like a Kawasaki Z900RS, a BMW RnineT, or maybe even the Triumph Tiger 850.

      Yeah, pretty much my choices. If only suzuki made an sv650 with the engine and suspension of the s750.

      @@vienv1 Where I live, some Suzuki Dealerships have discounted the 2020 GSx s750($8000) for almost the same prices as 2020 SV 650 ( $7500). SV was my first choice but after seeing the $1400 discount on GSX , it was no brainer. I put deposit on one to pick up in April. The catch is that I have to drive it back 600Km.

      Good choice. In the UK until the 31st December the GSX-S is £7,249. In term of BHP bang for your buck it's a no brainer.

      @@mrcintheuk5596 Where I live, some Suzuki Dealerships are giving 15% discount on GSX, but I have to drive 600Km to pick up the bike which is worth it. This time of the year lots of dealerships wants to open up space for their new 2021 inverntory, it is good time to find good discounts. I did a National search on Kijiji for the GSX S 750 and found a dealership with a big discount.

    Both are great! I have a CB650R and could'nt go to another one. That screamer is just bliss on twisty roads.
    Tho the electronics of the Trident are better.

    As I live in the United States, the Triumph probably has the edge because it is cheaper. I'd love to see an "RS" version with a few upgraded goodies though!

    I was actually shopping for a bike and these two were at the top of the list. I never had either brand before, but I put a deposit on the Trident, sight unseen. The numerous reviews were just too good to ignore. And "character" of the bike was def a factor.

    I own a CB500F , love this bike. However, looking at the Trident, I like the fact that you can customize your bike with many accessories, such as alarm, gps tracking, protections of all kind, looks, communication and more. Yes Cb650R may have more HP but Trident looks safer in terms of electronics not to mention , lighter. So the fact that you can add a personal touch from start to the Trident makes me wanna consider the Trident for my next bike. I however would like to see in future configurators also exhaust customization, and others, such as pedals, handlebars, brake pads, that would be something.

    I was very close to buying the Honda CB650R until I saw the Triumph Trident. Just my opinion but I think Triumph just hit a home run! Trident is a beautiful looking bike. I have put a deposit on one and can’t wait till it arrives! Feel like a kid in a candy store! 🇨🇦

    Always had Honda's, incredible bikes but the Africa twin wasn't the bike I wanted and the tiger 800 is. I bought a Trident. Excellent handling.

    I've ridden the Trident 🔱 several times now and I will NEVER go back to a 4 cylinder bike. So much low and mid RPM torque, so much fun! And ohhhh, that sound; the triple is just without parallel in that category. I could listen to that all day and I have NO interest in getting on a CB650! If I want more power I'd just get a Triumph Street Triple 765--with this bike, I can have way way more than the best of both worlds.

      @@EnglishbikerdanI still really like inline 4s, but if I have a choice, I would prefer an inline 3 cylinder. Actually, I wish someone would make an inline 5 cylinder engine for a bike (I've seen a V5). I would love to hear and see how that configuration would perform. I actually used to like those older inline 6s but the engine always seemed a bit too wide. A 5 would narrow that up a bit. I just really like an odd number of cylinders because of the way they need to be spaced around the crank.

      Only thing stopping me getting the Trident is the over heating issues…typical British problem…..Honda is a no brainer.

    Honda front end looks fantastic with the gold fork and radial calipers,rear not so much. Fit and finish looks at higher level than MT07 or Z650. Stil not seen Trident live but I like the overall appearance and sound of the triple. In my country Trident 660 is £230 cheaper than Honda though.

    I was set on Honda until triumph launched the trident. And since it will be my first bike, I don't really know if I prefer the in-line 4 or the triple. Can't wait for the "in person" comparison.

    Right 🤔, well if the Trident truly handles better then i'm really liking the Triumph because if i where to buy one of these and i don't do track days i think maybe the Triumph sounds like a funner bike. While i know the Honda has more power i think the only place i would be able to use that power is the track which is expensive around where i live if i wanted to do track days.

    Given the limited ride time you had for launch video, how did the axial mounted brakes compare to the radial on your Honda?

    Well done! They are both made in Thailand aswell. I think as a Honda owner, there's no reason for swapping. But if I were to buy one today? Hmm...the Honda brings me home every time. Not so sure about the Triumph, I'm afraid.

    i am considering both these bikes at the moment but the deal breaker for me is the realibility of honda and the inline 4 cylinder sound. the slight tip in rpm mid range for honda cb650r i wonder if it will be annoying during rides. currently riding the cb250r and i find it lacking of power on highways...

    Good job, your comparison is very interesting. The Honda CB 650 R 2021 is worth trying. I am curious about a better suspension because all our roads are not smooth.

      Got cb model 2019 and suspension is too hard for me on bad roads. Good road = great fun, bad road = little ass pain 😅

      I own a cb500 and now also a street triple S derestricted to 94 bhp.
      I tried the trident whilst having my first service and I am so glad I bought the triple.
      The turning circle on my Honda is much wider and easier to manoeuvre in traffic. The street triple is a blast, much noisier on stock exhaust, just wants to be driven fast. Really comes alive in bends and is more chuckable.
      I’m toying with swapping the cb500f for cb650r if I find an opportune trade in offer.

    I think it in the end it comes down to which is cheaper and which has better support in given country. I like Trident more, but if I was buying in my country it would be Honda.

    I’ve never ridden the Honda but I’ve just picked up my Trident 660 and so far (running it in) I’m well impressed with the torque, ride finish and handling. I spent £2000 on additional kit so a cheap bike wasn’t that cheap at the end of the day but I’ve got a lot of quality and bike for a modest amount of money.

    I think visually I like the CB650r a little bit more, but I don't know that I would want an i4. Also, in the US, the MSRP of the Honda is ~$1,200USD more expensive! We only get the CB650r in black in the US as well, but that would be my choice anyways. :) Realistically I don't know that I will get either, just window shopping. I have a '15 FZ-07 that's already paid for, and barely sees seat time!

    All my bikes were/are Hondas, you can't go wrong with a Honda. When I first saw the new CB I fell in love with it and I'm in the process of retiring my beloved Hornet. CB was the obvious choice, but damn the Trident seems like an excellent bike and to my taste a more beautiful one. My only concern is reliability, other than that it's such a tough call.

      I think nowadays bikes are way more reliable. That being said, the most unreliable bike I've owned in 20 years was an MT07. So who knows! Good luck with your choice, I don't think you'll be disappointed with either bike tbh.

    In the market for a new bike but family biz in Chicago for the winter, so no rush. Last bike was a 2017 FZ-07 on Hawaii Island aka The Big Island. Paradise on a Yamaha. Can't really see how one could go wrong either way. Never owned a Triumph and Trident looks like a great all-rounder. Have had Honda inline 4's that I loved. I want to hear more about 2021 MT-09 and SP version. Plus now the new Monster. Decisions, decisions?

    I like the Triumph Trident 660 but, what struck me was that it looked very small, especially lengthwise. When Triumph released the specs I checked them, and found out it's 110mm (4 5/16") shorter than the Honda CB650R. I've been doing a 58-mile round trip to train at the Honda Ride Academy in Chester because they use new Honda CB650Rs, and it's where I bought my CB125R. At 6' 2", the Honda CB650R with the more muscular inline-four engine, suits my frame better. I absolutely love riding the Honda CB650R, and I find it easier to ride than my CB125R! It's a top quality bike; the engine is smooth and refined, it looks great, and it's very reliable. I've managed to pass my MOD1 last week first time, and I've got my MOD2 next Monday, so hopefully I'll be getting a bigger bike very soon. But, to be honest, I'm not really sold on the Triumph, yet, but the running costs look good, which is a bonus. I do like the Honda CB650R, but the Aprilia Tuono 660 is also on the horizon, mmm.

      @@henrietn No, it's very comfortable. I've got a bad back, and even after hours of riding my back is fine. The seat is nicely padded as well. The reason I bought a naked bike was because of the more upright riding position, I knew it would be easier on my lower back. My Honda CB125R has a bit of a hard ride because of the suspension setup, and it's a small bike. You feel every big bump in the road, and it jars your back. On the other hand, I find the CB650R is very easy on my back, I've had no problems whatsoever. With the new suspension set-up, I expect the bike to be even better, you should test one, I can guarantee you won't be disappointed. A cruiser puts your feet in a forward position, and puts strain on your lower back, because your spine is in a curved position. A naked bike places your feet behind you, and your spine is in a more natural position, and you move them sightly forward to change gear and brake. The best bike for your back would be an Africa Twin, all the Honda instructors use them. Its become Honda biggest selling large capacity bike - the sales of sports bikes have fallen off a cliff! In a few years I will be looking to buying a new Africa Twin, but, in the meantime, I'm going to enjoy myself on a CB650R!

    I would prefer the torque of the triple but the cheaper steel construction of swingarm and frame make me wary of the Triumph. It would have to be much better to ride for me to choose it over the Honda.

    As owner of 765RS, and an ex owner of CBR650F, I'd give the Triumph a thumb up. I'm only 5'7", and weigh 154lbs. Also I consider myself an intermediate rider, and mot an advance rider. Bike's curb weight, and ride by wire is very important to me.

    why do they all talk about the numbers i can get off the brochure, what's it like to run this thing? how much is insurance, spare parts? oil, tyres? how do they compare riding, for a newbie, veteran? whats the build quality? materials used? cost to import new parts, are they cheap and easy to obtain? do they have plenty of engineers in the country to keep the repair costs down?

    Both these bikes are so evenly matched.... But where I live the Honda costs £1700 more than the Trident..... Add to that the Honda is only offered here with a detuned 87 bhp/58nm output which makes it really hard to justify the price difference.

      Interestingly, I can flat foot my Honda but I couldn't flat foot the Trident, and the Honda is taller. More investigations needed when the bike is in the UK.

    I'm really thinking about to get the Trident for my A2 and use Triumph's financing and trade in the trident after 1-2 years and get a Street Triple RS.

      Hi, may I respectfully suggest you don't buy new for your A2 license bike if you intend to sell it so quickly afterwards. You'll lose a fortune in depreciation and warranty service costs, plus the insurance may be cheaper. You'll also probably drop it. 👍

      @@TeoSluga While I don't have the 650R I own two CBR600 (one track one street) and I actually love the "weakness" of the four down low, because when you are cruising you have a smooth running engine that's not hard on chain or tires but will easy go with traffic, but if you need screaming power it's just one or two downshifts away! :) so you got two bikes (personalites) in one bike.
      In this case however I would go for the trident since I've ridden Hondas all my life and the Tridents seems to be finally a fun "little" bike for the town and around that isn't too hard on the wallet and looks really great.

      @@TeoSluga I say you are completly right, but only in a surprise acceleration attac, if you are in racemode, you never let the revs drop on your four. If in cruisemode I guess you just don't care.

    Would be nice to compare freeway cruising. Can they cruise relaxed at 85 mph? Or are they both screaming at 9000rpm?

      My Cb650r feels wind only after 120kmh. Under that speed You will feel almost nothing. I've bought the GIVI windscreen and now I'm waiting for better weather :) anyway i had CBF600 2010 before and I was scared of naked bikes due to no fairing, no windscreen. However it is not that bad as everybody said. If You want to ride faster than 120kmh get good looking medium screen and thats all. ;)

    I want a comparison in between cb650r, mt 07 and the trident since i can't pick one of them yet. I love the looks of the trident, and people say mt 07 is the most fun bike out of the 3. cb650r is the most complete of them all but lacks the mt 07 funny torque

      I just picked up a 2023 Triumph Trident, a few years ago, I owned a brand new CB500F. I'd say fit and finish is the same, I love the sound of triple
      and Triumph is extremely nimble, almost bicycle like! Service intervals are, every 10000 miles for minor and every 20000 miles for major.

    The Triumph is the one I lust after, but the Honda is a lot cheaper to insure as a new rider, and Honda give a really good discount when you use their training school.

    Think the Triumph has it for me, the power and torque are more accessible lower in the revs. The Triumph is lighter and lower suiting newer riders and has a better electronics package. Looks wise honestly I really like the Honda, especially those swept exhaust pipes and I think the Honda better suits a more experienced rider who will exploit the top end of the rev range.
    Be difficult to bet against the Honda as being the most reliable.

    Very, very tough call but would go for Honda. Still think they top the reliability stakes. Can't believe triumph still promoting the Union flag. I believe no triumphs are made in Britain anymore and triumph are not the only ones to "design " in Britain either.

      Honda certainly have a good rep for reliability. The Union jack is a nice touch from a British brand, to me it doesn't matter where it's manufactured. It's all designed over here. But there's colour options without it if you don't like it.

I own two Triumphs and if I’m completely honest, that British badge/flag is important to me (I am a US citizen and know plenty of lads over here who feel the same)... now, having said that, the bikes still need to be up to scratch aesthetically and mechanically, but all things mostly equal is where I mark to start...

For your information, I have been riding for over 50 years, and have owned over 45 different bikes of different makes and styles.     I considered the Honda and Yamaha before putting my deposit on the Trident. Crazy I know as nothing available to test ride but the reviews speak volumes. Buy British (i hasten to say English as no ginger jock or welsh Druid input) and fly the flag.
