My first trip to FMB was in 1985. My wife and I have visited there about a dozen times over the years, as snowbirds. I was always struck by the family atmosphere; many generations from a single family. We used to visit the library for books and local information. My fondest memory is of a guy named Mitch, a big, friendly man from Chicago who did volunteer work there. Sadly, he perished in the hurricane.
Best wishes to the people who’ve had their lives so terribly impacted.

Wow. That's really sad to see the pier gone. It's been a decade since I lived in FM, and although it was one of the worst times of my life (had a few issues with some racism), the beach was definitely one of my favorite things. I can't believe Ian trashed the pier; I was down there for Wilma (it ended up being one of the reasons I moved back to Chicago), and I don't remember it trashing the pier that bad...

I see only remnants of places where I lived and spent the best years of my life.

The law of insanity doing the same thing and expecting different results. The best thing to do it’s to give the beach back to nature where it belongs . We don’t need a new pier

Nothing wrong with a pier, but all the junk built on the beach next to the pier can stay gone.
