A friend of a friend has written a book on YES which is comprised of exclusive interviews with every member of the band, past and present, as well as never before published photos. Looks exciting.
Some might consider this to be "the" quintessential prog-rock bass line of all time.
I'm using my trusty SansAmp Bass Driver for a bit of grind.
Definitely in over my head on this song and had to make some modifications to play it finger style, although I do a bit of spastic picking towards the end of the song.
I've gotten a lot of comments about not using the Ric for this song so I'll address that here instead of repeating myself.
The Ric needs a string change and with that always comes a neck adjustment as I'm getting rid of those awful Rotosounds I put on. Overall it's a pretty fussy instrument and demands constant attention. I think I like the idea of owning a Rickenbacker more than actually playing one. I think they're gorgeous and sound great for some things......but awful on other stuff. I actually haven't played it in months and like the Geddy Lees so much that I got a second one. Also, I'm recording with someone tomorrow and thought it was a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the fresh set of strings on this bass.

    Thanks.
I've done my fair share of live/real world playing and I'm happy where I am. For five or ten minutes at a time, I'm playing with some of the greatest bands in the world with none of the hassles associated with playing in a band. The drummers never go out of time, the guitarists are never drunk or out of tune (same goes for the singers), the soundmen always pay careful attention to the bass in the mix, I'm home in bed before 4am...I could go on and on.
I play because I love to play.

A good bass playing friend of mine shared this comment with me. I cannot tell you how much this resonated with me. I've been following your channel for awhile now. I'm a full-time drummer and teacher and I've used your covers to actually learn drum parts where the mix is so bad. Your bass parts are so precise I can use them to figure out kick patterns. Plus I'm a huge horror movie fan so there's no way I can't like your channel!
I've been playing music full-time since 1998. In 2003 when my son was born I transitioned from gigging 80% of the time and teaching 20% of the time to the other way around. At first it was great. Then the grind started setting in. I've never grown weary of teaching but I was growing weary of the gig grind. I decided during this pandemic when the gigs were locked down to semi-retire from live performance and just focus on teaching 100%. I've had more fun practicing stuff I want to work on (rather than learning covers I hate) and playing the music I want to play!
Your comment was not only a catalyst for me but it was encouraging for me as well to know others felt the way I did. Especially players of your caliber. Many folks think that you can't truly blossom as a musician unless you play with others. I think we each need to find our own paths. Thank you for your passion and dedication to your craft. Thank you also for your wisdom.

I started out playing bass and did fair. Mixing sound and configuring sound system is something I became successful at. The most difficult thing is the bass guitar being heard consistently in tone and in the mix at all seats. My efforts have paid off and get to work with the best and if I’m home by 11PM, it is a good day.

gbear 4 bass players typically don't use picks, we use our index and middle fingers to pluck instead, it's much more efficient and you get a more bassy "thump" out of the instrument.

Bee bons This is also typical in classical guitar. That's how I easily picked up the bass because I began on guitar, but not just to strum.

I used to try using picks because I lacked dexterity, but all in all using a pick takes much more effort (in my opinion). Also, this guy is a legend.

    • @laughingdaffodils5450
      @laughingdaffodils5450 6 лет назад +14

Using a pick takes more effort for some pieces, less for others. For instance at a lower level of skill I find the pick makes it relatively easy to hold steady quavers with a hard attack, while if I play the same notes with my fingers there is a softer deeper attack (less important) and a tendancy to play either the on-beats or off-beats a little differently in some way. Each of those is perfect for some pieces (usually written by a guy that favored the same style) and not quite right for others. The startling thing here is that this is a song written by Chris Squier, who was a very technical player who always used a pick. Playing it with fingers is expected to sound off, and usually does. Hence the remark - performing this song is difficult, performing it with fingerpicking and still sounding right is doubly so. See ruclips.net/video/0zoZiZ7_4VA/видео.html for comparison.

Guys remember, Troy has studied Geddy's old technique very thoroughly, and Geddy has been influenced by Chris Squire's technique, and Geddy doesn't use a pick, which Troy doesn't use either. So to try and sound like they're using one, they hit hard, which is good enough for this song.

Those of us that surf the utube bass players rarely see this level of skill. I mean, come on now. Even the tone is so spot on. How many could get that fender to sound like that? The choices of covers from the simple, were all alone, to over the top yyz are enuff to makes us all smile and dream of playing at such a level. You looked so relaxed playin. How about that bass collection ....shit. I love the bass. I have 4 that I play equally bad. But it still fun. Thanks for the post

I know Squire laid down like 10 different tracks to make that whole glorious sound come alive, but maybe you could demonstrate each new part as it enters and then move to the next. Or maybe another Squire classic? Heart of the Sunrise? Long Distance Runaround? Thanks for your consideration and have a great night!

What do you mean a "true bassist does not use a pick?" There are plenty of great bass players out there who use a pick, Chris Squire probably being the best one. Just because the bass was technically meant for fingerstyle, doesn't mean a pick is the "wrong" way to play.
It's really personal preference, along with the different sound you get.

I dont know why I waste my time even posting a comment, the haters & wannabe players will always be there with nothing else to do but say negative things about people that share what they have worked to present to others, only to have jelouse readers say stupid remarks.

Chris Squire was the the reason I started playing bass. Entwhistle was my favorite rock player of 70’s and 80’’s. Now I don’t have a favorite, but enjoy all great players. Thank you for your contribution!

Great job, although I seem to recall watching a video interview of Chris Squire and he was asked to play "Roundabout" (the main verse/riff) and it was just; E, F#, G to A and B to D and E.......he seemed to do it a lot simpler and he is the man who wrote it after all..... I will say again that your version does sound really accurate and good....
