Good choice man I have the razer blade 15 144hz 1060 and made that choice for a lot of the same reasons you did. It's an EXCELLENT laptop. I love mine and wouldn't trade it for anything
I can see the logic of your decision, but those results kind of defy gravity, that is, why a throttled 1070 will be outperformed by a throttled (MaxQ) 1060, talking about diminishing retunrns! just for kicks, did you try "quiet mode" (I dont remember the exact name for the non-gaming mode) on the blade 1070's Synapse settings? that might be the trick. Also I think the missing competitor here is the Aero15, I think for long-term use for photo/video editing, having that second M2 slot and the SD card slot are great!
Just to let you know: I have Razer Blade 15 i7 RTX 2060 and it has a big thermal issue. After 2h of playing more demanding games (Battlefront II or GTA V at max settings) it gets hot! I was going to upgrade because the Dell 4k screen is really the best (and a lot brighter than the Razer 1080p 144Hz or 4k screens) but I knew that the heat would be unmanageable.
I actually made the same exact decision when I needed a new work laptop for CAD/Gaming. My 1060 version has been flawless (I had a blade 14 gtx 870m before that was a HOT mess) and the performance has been way better than I expected considering the weaker card. I wanted a cooler potentially more reliable (we'll see) laptop in the long run. Been happy so far!
No its not a geek talk, Thank you Matthew, this is exactly what I wanted to hear and know to decide which laptop should I go with. Wow I'm so glad I watched this video. I actually just bought the Razer 15 with the 1060 and am so happy with it. I'm gaming on it and running Cubase and Kontakt for music writing. Thanks for the great vid :)
I like the 1060 144hz a lot a swell but it can't even come in a terabyte of storage. If you use it as a daily driver and download a bunch of games and render a bunch of stuff all the time you're gonna need to buy more storage eventually which will suck seeing how expensive it is already is.
Hey, I just came across this. Is there a reason why you called the 60Hz version of the 1080p display "hot garbage"? Because I plan to buy that version but mainly for photo editing and not gaming.
Honestly I think there was something wrong - I have the 1070/4k model and I don't see the throttling you claim. Rendering times are quite good, and yes, it does power throttle, but not as severely as you saw. The 4K screen isn't as nice as the 144Hz one for framerate, but it kicks ass for color. And NO, you can't really game in 4k anyway. Based on my observations, the boost on the CPU is about what you saw with the 1060 version, and the GPU isn't adding a ton of heat over the 1060 either. Check your fan settings - Mine was set to not vary automatically by default, and I had to force it in the razer settings.
For people who like to game and only have one computer, this is probably the best compromise. Generally you can just build a $500 to $1000 (can be below or above this range, but this is probably the general budget range) desktop pc and buy a 13 inch screen laptop (much more portable) instead. Gaming on laptops reduces the efficiency of the batteries by a lot over time, where you basically have to keep them plugged in the whole time at some point. I used to have an alienware 17, which had dual fans, a well designed intake and outtake ventilation design, pipes with copper heat sinks attached, and I even used a cooler master notepal with 3 external fans to feed even more cool air from underneath my laptop. Heat still won in the end and had its toll on my battery.
This comparison is soo helpful, I was wondering about this comparison; 1060 vs 1070 in this laptop. Longevity is what im after, 1060 version sounds like you get more for less
Just picked up a Dell 15 2 in 1 4k recently and I absolutely love it. I can play all the games I want on that thing and the convertible factor is very valuable to me. The 4k screen is insane also. Too bad battery life is so short. Guess you can't have everything though haha
I just got the same blade about a week ago. That thing is pretty awesome. My first gaming computer and I didn’t even plan on getting one. I was looking for a new laptop for school and I was surprised to see a gaming laptop was cheaper and more powerful than the surface pro I was about to buy. Glad I made a last minute decision
Same for me, can't believe how lucky I was to find out about this sort of laptop. Whenever I buy something expensive like this I become an expert on the subject (forget everything a few weeks later) and only found out about the blade 15 late in the process. And then I found a brand new unwanted gift one on eBay for 50% off the store price
Great video mate. I really want to get this laptop but I have been editing 4K videos on my iMac for a few years and I am not sure I can go from 5K to 1K. How are you finding editing 4K content on a 1080p panel?
1080p = 2k. The Imac being 200 ppi and the 1080p razer being 150 ppi I wouldnt say you find too much trouble. The 4k razer is more color accurate though and should benefit editing
Awesome comparison. Perhaps the difference in frame rates between the 1060 and the 1070 has something to do with that 4K panel? Though in my opinion the 1060 is the best compromise between performance, cost and heat management.
Glad to hear the 1060 performed so well. If the 1060 dual storage wasnt limited to the 60Hz panel I would go pick one up. Hopefully they will add that option with their the next update .
...LOL Great vid Matt. I was just thinking about updating my Razer Blade 15" 1060 Max Q 1080 with the 2019 RTX 2070 but I guess I will hold out for now brother! May God continue to Bless you! Later from Tucson, AZ...
Had any issues or everything good? This is by far the best looking gaming laptop(except logo). But I'm afraid I won't be able to find a replacement battery for when it inevitably degrades and Razer doesn't sell any.
Doesn't that shift key ordeal bother you alot? It's almost a deal breaker for me. I'm actually leaning on the MSI GS65 Stealth thin now. It produced better cooling and doesn't have that keyboard issue.
So for someone who has no interest in gaming and just content creation would you still recommend this over the xps 15. Also is 4k really that big a deal over 1080p.
Really surprised that the 1070 you get lower frame rates than 1060 in games and also your rendering is different. Your actually the first person to recommend the 1060 on the razer. Can you run unreal engine and blender benchmarks on both razers? Also whats the battery life difference between the two? Is the 4k screen a big battery drain? Did you test on normal mode or the gaming (extreme) mode?
Is the 1060 available in the Advanced model or is that only the Base model now?? Also, what's the best site to buy these at and what kinds of warranty did y'all get?
Back in May, so many people bought Razer Blade 15 GTX1070 believing that it performs better than GTX1060. In two months later, Razer updated their driver and it turned out that GtX1060 outperforms GTX1070.
Out of curiosity - can't you like, tinker around (or maybe ask for a service manual) from Razer and switch up the 4k display to the 1060? You got 'em both after all, I'm sure it's not that hard to get the more resolution, more aRGB compliance one fitted to the 1060 model. If that's what you need of course, some people are switching sides to +100hz these days, and I say to each his own - I personally am not tainted by the goodness of ultra-high refresh rates... yet
For my own use-cases the GTX-1060 Max-Q model is more than good enough. The internals are just the perfect fit for the Razer Blade's chassis so that it maintains the highest possible power for the longest time without cooking it. It's just so expensive. :P
Last month I was thinking on getting one of those, but I ended up buying an Alienware 17 R5. I know it doesn't make any sense, but I'm very happy with the new machine! 💪
Just sub'd because I am in the market for a new daily computer and need windows for work. I totally agree with your thermal and longevity stance. It's hard to find reviewers that value thermals and durability like you do. Nice info.
looked into the gtx1070 and the rtx 2060 versions of this and almost went with one of those versions, but just can't get past the superior long game I am convinced this combination of spec's in this case should bring. I want this laptop to serve as my main machine for at least 4 years of daily use, with some light to moderate gaming. I had an Acer laptop burn out on me after less than 2 years and I didn't like that even though they tend to cost less. I would normally go for a Dell XPS 15 but heat issues, along with a lot of the gpu laptops $1k-1.2k in pricing run too hot to last. I'll pay $1800 for piece of mind. Now I need to convince my wife;> @@MatthewMoniz
Thanks very much for this Video Matt. The information you have given here is extremely useful for potential buyers. I had a hunch that the GTX 1070 models (and CPU) may throttle more in such a confined chassis and it seems that you've proven this to be true.
Hi, I've been watching a lot of your youtube videos lately but I'm still having a very tough time deciding on what laptop to get. I was initially comparing the razer 15 gtx 1060 (2018 version with ethernet (not because I need ethernet but because it's considerably cheaper and dont need the 144 Hz refresh rates on the new one)), with similarly speced alienware m15, and GSI stealth, and AERO 15, however, after the razer won the battle i got tempted by the soon to be released matebook x pro and xps 15 which are lighter, better screen (brighter) and have a better battery life... though obviously not as poewrful. This is a big change for me as I've been using macs since 2006 but am now fed up with them. What I'd use it for is mainly internet browsing, netflix, emails, office etc. AND the only real reason for which I was looking at the gaming laptops is that I play civilization VI which from my rudimentary understanding of computers doesn't take much of a toll on the GPU but does require a good CPU. I'm currently using a mid 2015 macbook pro with a 2.5 Ghz i7, 16 Gb RAM and Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB graphics. Sorry for the bother and the long note, but I would really appreciate any feedback you may have as searching for a new laptop is consuming every waking moment I have (speaking hyperbolically).
Do you reckon the 1060 will be able to run black ops 4 at medium-ish settings/1080p? I want to buy a razer because i love the black finish and RGB lighting. Black ops isn’t a necessity, but it’d be a huge bonus if it could!
So would you reccomand the1060 or 1070 model, everything considered? FPS, battery life, thermals etc...? The 1070 model does come now with 144Hz 1080p.
5 лет назад+1
And now, the exact same thing is true for the new rtx 2060 model, it's the cheapest and the coolest one. I'm getting one soon :)
Ive been doing research between the XPS and Blade 15, but cannot decide between the two. This was the first positive video with positive comments about the Razer blade that I have seen. I plan to use whatever laptop I get for schoolwork and light gaming. Which do you think would be better? I would also be aiming for the Blade 15 with the gtx 1060 at 60hz
Did you do the thermal paste and undervolting that we've seen on youtube regarding the xps 15? That's what I did the day that I got the laptop and I haven't been having any issues with thermal throttling. There are people that have gone even further and added thermal pads and they've gotten even better results with that making the temps stay under 70C all the time.
Have you noticed any backlight bleeding? I'm looking to purchase the Razer Blade 15, but after some research i've come across tons of negative reviews related to horrible backlight bleeding.
I wanted to buy the 1070 version of the blade, but this convinced me to go for the 1060. I mean better thermals and better performance for a lower price, what more can you ask for?
So your complaint about the XPS is that it gets too hot and throttles, something that the Razer Blade is well known for also? Any machine with high spec components in such a small form factor are going to over heat... The ONLY reason to choose the Razer Blade is for gaming, otherwise the XPS is much much better value for money.
Super interesting take on this and an eye opener about the 1060 vs. the 1070. Definitely gonna save people a lot of cache. However is there a way to maximize the 1070 to squeeze out it's power without the throttling, i.e. applying less voltage or something?
Hey matt thanks for you greats videos. Can you make a reviews of eluktronics mech 15 g2?. I want buy them but I'm not sure if it's the best choice. I would greatly appreciate your opinion to choose this laptop or a hp omen 15 2018
From what everyone says and review, it still seems the Gigabyte Aero 15x is a better choice. Great cooling, 1070 option, better port selection including sd card, fantastic 144 hz screen, good quality. I think they seem to have better quality control than the Razer blades, plus the driver issues of early models seem to be resolved. Only issue is it doesn't hit 3.8 GHz like the razor blade but still is respectable.
Great video. I personally chose the 4k 1070 version for future proof reasons if paying that much for a laptop and am very pleased with it. Also don't really dig matte screens. But great video and valid points for anyone considering this purchase.
I am super happy to her the 1060Q is better for heat management, as that has been my biggest deciding factor for whether or not I should buy it. My only other concern is, does the 1060Q manage VR better?.
Would the 1070 max-q model be running like it's supposed to with undervolt + repaste ? Or the 1060 max-q model would still be a better pick performance speaking ?
Dude thank you so much for this review, I’ve been looking all over for a video editors perspective on this laptop (and a side of gaming) and have only found the opposite 😂 thank you sir! Also I think I’ll save up and get the 2070 version with 4K display ❤️
In esport games like csgo dota or overwatch, it seems that the 1060 produces more fps but in graphically demanding games the 1060 isn’t able to go past high settings and is struggling to stay at 60fps while the 1070 is able to max out those games and stay comfortably around the 65-70 fps range

There is surely no point in getting a Razer Blade 15 GTX1070. 1060 model performs significantly better due to a better thermal management!
How a 1060 model can perform better than a 1070 x(.
Ok I saw it on the vid, but how it can be possible?
It might be because of thermal management I think, due to the small formfactor the 1070 ain't got much room to breathe but better for the 1060.
An undervolt helps a lot.
@@xiajiexing7413 they do
on 1080p 144hz the 1070 is faster. no throttle.
Just picked up a Dell 15 2 in 1 4k recently and I absolutely love it. I can play all the games I want on that thing and the convertible factor is very valuable to me. The 4k screen is insane also. Too bad battery life is so short. Guess you can't have everything though haha
Can you video edit on the 2 in 1
With production quality this high, and mostly no bias reviews haw does this guy not have millions of subs
Please compare to the Lenova Carbon X1 Extreme.
What about 144Hz 1080p 1070 then ? He didn't mention it.
And you're correct! If you lower the resolution from 4K to 1080 you'll get better frame rate.
@@royarnab22 not more than 60 since its a 60hz panel
Glad to hear the 1060 performed so well. If the 1060 dual storage wasnt limited to the 60Hz panel I would go pick one up. Hopefully they will add that option with their the next update .
@5:03 GTX 10-SEXTY haha. Love your videos BTW!
lol slip up there! thanks Donovan!
Matthew Moniz Hey slip ups make you seem more human and relatable!
...LOL
Great vid Matt. I was just thinking about updating my Razer Blade 15" 1060 Max Q 1080 with the 2019 RTX 2070 but I guess I will hold out for now brother! May God continue to Bless you!
Later from Tucson, AZ...
Thanks Howie!! Hope all is well and Stay safe
Interesting take on the performance between the 1060 vs 1070. I haven’t seen anyone explain it that way before. Good job!!
Thanks Tom!
Also, what's the best site to buy these at and what kinds of warranty did y'all get?
that power throttling information is Gold
Ok but are you testing vs the 4k version?
How about vs 1070 1440hz liquid cooled and undervolted?
Back in May, so many people bought Razer Blade 15 GTX1070 believing that it performs better than GTX1060. In two months later, Razer updated their driver and it turned out that GtX1060 outperforms GTX1070.
the 1070 was run on 1080p as stated by matthew, razer yet again messed up
Now I don't feel so bad being "cheap" and buying the 1060 model
Hey ! How has the 1070maxq been performing vs a regular maxQ, good framerates expected at 1080p ?
Out of curiosity - can't you like, tinker around (or maybe ask for a service manual) from Razer and switch up the 4k display to the 1060? You got 'em both after all, I'm sure it's not that hard to get the more resolution, more aRGB compliance one fitted to the 1060 model. If that's what you need of course, some people are switching sides to +100hz these days, and I say to each his own - I personally am not tainted by the goodness of ultra-high refresh rates... yet
What are the specs of the file you used to render test? Length? Gradeded or not? 4k or 1080 source vs output and fps? Software used?
So I essentially wasted my money getting the 1070 version? Would that still apply even if I added thermal pads, repasted and undervolted?
Nice info.
Thanks Timothy!! Welcome to the channel = )
looked into the gtx1070 and the rtx 2060 versions of this and almost went with one of those versions, but just can't get past the superior long game I am convinced this combination of spec's in this case should bring.
Why do you call the 60hz 1080p version hot garbage? Please elaborate. I'm currently saving up for this laptop.
I was waiting for this a looooong timeeee thanks Matt
You're very welcome!
@@MatthewMoniz Is the 60hz that bad compared to the 144?
Thanks very much for this Video Matt. The information you have given here is extremely useful for potential buyers. I had a hunch that the GTX 1070 models (and CPU) may throttle more in such a confined chassis and it seems that you've proven this to be true.
Glad I could help!!
Alejandro just to let you know even though the dell XP’s 15 has better brightness the screen is so oversatured.
thanks for the video, I brought on myself and I glad to see a didn't make a mistake
Do you reckon the 1060 will be able to run black ops 4 at medium-ish settings/1080p?
I want to buy a razer because i love the black finish and RGB lighting. Black ops isn’t a necessity, but it’d be a huge bonus if it could!
Matthew, what are the core temps for the 1060 max-q version? Does it stay in the 80s? Great video, btw, congrats!
So would you reccomand the1060 or 1070 model, everything considered? FPS, battery life, thermals etc...? The 1070 model does come now with 144Hz 1080p.
And now, the exact same thing is true for the new rtx 2060 model, it's the cheapest and the coolest one. I'm getting one soon :)
Razer Blade 15 with RTX 2060 has big issue with cooling
Aside from Notebook this is one of the only videos i can find that talk about the 1060 version of the blade and its perks
Now i’m watching this video with my razer blade 1070 model. OMG
So between the 1080p 144hz 1060 and the 1080p 144hz 1070 mac q razor blade 15’s the 1060 is better?
Correct
Did you do the thermal paste and undervolting that we've seen on youtube regarding the xps 15? That's what I did the day that I got the laptop and I haven't been having any issues with thermal throttling. There are people that have gone even further and added thermal pads and they've gotten even better results with that making the temps stay under 70C all the time.
What is the battery life that you are getting on the 1060 version as far as productivity? Can it be a work laptop?
Hey Matthew, are you able to comment on the sound quality of the Razer Blade 15 in comparison with Asus Zenbook Pro 15? Thank you.
Have you noticed any backlight bleeding? I'm looking to purchase the Razer Blade 15, but after some research i've come across tons of negative reviews related to horrible backlight bleeding.
Ill have to check!
I seen you reviewed the macbook 16 inch. which one did you end up sticking with?
I wanted to buy the 1070 version of the blade, but this convinced me to go for the 1060. I mean better thermals and better performance for a lower price, what more can you ask for?
unless you're in for undervolting and liquid metal
So your complaint about the XPS is that it gets too hot and throttles, something that the Razer Blade is well known for also? Any machine with high spec components in such a small form factor are going to over heat... The ONLY reason to choose the Razer Blade is for gaming, otherwise the XPS is much much better value for money.
Super interesting take on this and an eye opener about the 1060 vs. the 1070. Definitely gonna save people a lot of cache. However is there a way to maximize the 1070 to squeeze out it's power without the throttling, i.e. applying less voltage or something?
Great Video!, Help'ed me finally decide on the 1060 model. Ill be picking one up this weekend!
Glad I could help! Let me know how you like it : )
I like The Fire 🔥 In The Video 📹,
You Are Faster Than Faster In Reviews, Love the Display
BTW Matt...you're videos have gotten really good lately. You're becoming an old pro at this whole RUclips thing. Keep up the great work.
Hey matt thanks for you greats videos. Can you make a reviews of eluktronics mech 15 g2?. I want buy them but I'm not sure if it's the best choice. I would greatly appreciate your opinion to choose this laptop or a hp omen 15 2018
Hey Matthew! How is the battery life like on the GTX 10sexty max-q :^)
On your normal usage how many hours are you getting?
You can Google that, dumbass.
Yep, can only agree. That's the same reason why I bought the 1060 version^^
Great video. I personally chose the 4k 1070 version for future proof reasons if paying that much for a laptop and am very pleased with it. Also don't really dig matte screens. But great video and valid points for anyone considering this purchase.
Mathew Moniz did you find any advantages the 1070 had over the 1060?
I am super happy to her the 1060Q is better for heat management, as that has been my biggest deciding factor for whether or not I should buy it. My only other concern is, does the 1060Q manage VR better?.
How does it performe with SC2 for example? How high can you set the graphics before it starts lagging or dropping something?
Would the 1070 max-q model be running like it's supposed to with undervolt + repaste ? Or the 1060 max-q model would still be a better pick performance speaking ?
Did he just calmly smack the laptop that I’m grinding my ass off for? I’m deceased
How much better battery life do you get with the gtx 1060 version vs the 1070?
Dude thank you so much for this review, I’ve been looking all over for a video editors perspective on this laptop (and a side of gaming) and have only found the opposite 😂 thank you sir! Also I think I’ll save up and get the 2070 version with 4K display ❤️
My pleasure!!
I don't know a lot about laptops...so hope you enjoy your new laptop ♥️
In esport games like csgo dota or overwatch, it seems that the 1060 produces more fps but in graphically demanding games the 1060 isn’t able to go past high settings and is struggling to stay at 60fps while the 1070 is able to max out those games and stay comfortably around the 65-70 fps range
Your video’s are always so clean !!!
Just got mine today. I love the design but I recommend you guys put a Dbrand skin or a cover since there will be a lot of fingerprints on it.
thanks you help me out of some specific specs i needed answered..im ordering the same one ur are switching too…thanks Matthew. u and david lee really help me out with alll this tech. im a network enigeer and crypto miner but damn it just becomes too much sometimes
What would you recommend for this laptop if you were using it like a main desktop the 1060 or 1070?
What about battery life? did you done any udervolting tests?
I want to buy it but I live in Turkey. Razer dont sell products in here. I am going to buy from abroad. If I buy this, I wont have any customer service. Some people says this laptop has problems. What do you thing about this. Should I buy this?
should I wait for May 2019 or should I buy now? Plz helllppppp Matthew.
You forgot to tell that it will render for 1-2h max before going dead with so much power
