- We just finished building my 1999 Honda Z50R resto-mod project, and I crashed it THREE TIMES on the first day of riding it. The 108cc big bore kit with the V2 race head is no joke for this 50cc Honda engine. We didn't replace the tires during this Honda mini bike restoration, which I believe is why I laid the bike down so many times- the tire was slick in the middle, and still had tread on the sides, which made high speed turns very squirrelly. Definitely should've changed the tires before sending it.

Put a tube in that tire, it'll be fine lol. Get Jon some training wheels and put the 50cc kit back in it. True happiness. So many go through life and never experience true bliss. They all think it's a $500k house and 2 new cars. All it really takes is an old minibike.

I had an 1984 Z50r as a kid. GREAT little bike. If memory serves me right, it has a 150 Lbs max rider weight, any more then that and the 3 bolts that hold the rim to the hub on the rear become loose. Brings back a lot of good memories. Great work guys! Love the content.

Yep. I've got a xr50 with the 4 speed from a Honda 110 3 wheeler and an 80 big bore. Does about 40 mph.

Tip. The key is not for holding the flywheel only there for guiding it in the right oosition for the ignitintiming. The flywheel is held i place by the taper on the axel/hole in the wheel. If it is not a close to perfect match you can torque it till you get blue it whont stay put nomattterwhat. The trick is to use valve grinding paste on the taper and grind to a better fit. If it is a good fit u will not even need a key.
When you get both of them fully ready that will be a really good race

You should bring back the diesel go kart
install a deutz air cooled 3 cylinder diesel engine and crank the injectors up for more power. The low end torque on that thing would rip you apart

@@hopingforthebest1.9 the diesel i am talking about makes ONLY 50hp. It is heavily detuned from the factory for extreme reliability and very long working time. Its 3,000cc. But because its a 3 cylinder its not that big. Crank the injectors up, maybe install a turbo and you got a true beast rolling coal

Man love those old bikes built many I took my 50 and add a taller gears from the 70 forget what years but u can swap alot between them and find the gear chart for them on the web I think I need to find one again and tinker had some much fun on the little bikes

I remember a friend of mine got a Honda 50 for christmas back in the late 60's or early 70's we had a blast on that little bike.
In the early 80s a friend of mine got a Kawasaki jr 50cc 2 stroke for Christmas That little thing was crazy fast His dad sold it and got him a Honda DS 80 4 stroke We would have killed our selves on that jr 50 It would run out from under ya at quarter throttle lol We had a blast on the DS 80 though plenty of power for 2 8yr old 😁✌️

We walked into what was then Ruttman in Dearborn Hts mi in 1980.
There was a brand new 1980 air cooled for i think $750 (!!!) And the new water cooled with radiator and no fins...looked tiny. It was i think about $950.
Dad and i agreed the little radiator sold us.
Took it down in the mountains of eastern kentucky where our family is from...that liquid cooled 80 was outrunning 125s stock because i was only 11 and weighed about 101 with wet hair (lol i had hair back then, shaved bald head for over 30 years now).
Left the YZ totally stock and just ran it.
Its crazy that so many years later i have a blaster 200 engine on my bench right now that i keep procrastinating on. The quad has to move soon as its not mine. I made it run after a friend bought it (made me drive it to his house down plymouth road from the hood in Detroit west side) had a blown head gasket. I suspected leaky seals and lean, but mixed it 20:1 myself and blocked the oil pump. Went from 50 kicks to starting first kick...then had to do a TORS delete. Friend took it out first time on labor day 2020. He called me from the street and said it locked up and threw him off over the handlebars.
Sure enough he locked it up...the jug came off with piston in it. Wrist pin and a bunch of pieces were below with the con rod bent and twisted 90 degrees. Brutal.
I since got a hotrods lower end kit but now need to go install a new crank a d rod.
Kinda funny as i typed this he called asking if i made any progress. Guess what ill be doing tonight...

GET SOME TIRES!!! For all the bikes with trash tires lol, that would save you too.
And some non rusted trough rims.
Might help to be on dirt instead of foot long grass. They got a tractor and you could drag just about any junk around and it would scrub the ground to bare dirt.
Really though, you can get the Shinko clone of the og trail wings for like $25...a rim without a hole in It wouldn’t hurt either lol.

Loving the z50 content. Just recently picked up a 78 myself to match my same year ct70. There is so much more parts availability for the 50's compared to the 70's. The ct70 is getting a 140 swap and a bunch of custom parts but keeping the z50 mostly stock...at least for now. May bolt on the TB parts shorty exhaust like your running on these and a possible 88cc kit in the future. Looking forward to more Honda mini trail content.

I havent done the 88 kit yet but i can tell you the 108 is awesome!
@Isaac it'll be fine I looked at the 88 because it’s a budget option at least when you just do just the piston and jug kit, it gets get pricy when you add the race head but you can use a stock 70 head for nearly the same results. You guys should look into using an xr75/ early xr80 swingarm. They would give you a +4 extension on the cheap and help with stability, which it looks like the 108 needs lol.

Is there not a more aggressive back tire you can get for the little 50 would definitely help you from slide out...

Hey man don't feel bad about taking the engine apart, a pin got smashed in the bottom end of my yz250f so I just put it back together without it and it turns out that it was a passage for the oil, so it has to come apart for the third time😂

You should use Acetone to flush the tank. It absorbs the water and comes out when you dump it. Also cleans it and preps for the tank liner. Also instead of using putty on the outside just use a piece of masking tape and use Red Kote tank sealer. Then peel the tape off. Will be good as new.

I have an idea for you. A regular car wheel, lay it on its side. Weld a shaft 18", then weld a spindle that points to the sky. After you tape off the wheel you need to paint, set it on the spindle and spin it, then spray.

those are great little motors. thats why the chinese has used it on almost every dirt bike shipped to america. That's also why they have all these big bore kits for the most reproduced motor ever. It's like the Chevy small block of small engines

Sometimes finding your limits takes a few crashes but you guys promote good safety by showing us those limits. :) Wearing the right gear while you do that helps to reduce the risk of being injured and is a good lesson for us all. :) Keep doing what you are doing. :)

If you don't lay'er down, you're not pushing it! I'm sure a sprocket swap would wake up the top end and possibly tame the squirrelly handling on the turns. The throttle wouldn't be so snappy. Stay safe!

john is turning into a crash monster. i guess it's a good thing you wear armor. you need to figure out how to keep the rubber side down, and the shiny side up. until then, you oughta make some crash bars with your cool tube bender to save your shiny pretty engine. it would make a good vid, and a much needed upgrade. or you could just get a nerf bike. lol!

Definitely need a re-gear. Im running 17/29 gearing on my z with a race head 88 kit. Love it! Still doing wheelies in first gear and 50 mph in 3rd.

That bottle fuel tank takes me back i had a 80cc trail bike that i found in a scrap yard that had no tank so i used a bottle with a brake adjuster from my bmx in the lid that id sealed with areldite glue to stop it leakin duct taped to the bars with some fish tank tubeing as a fuel line lol i was only 13 at the time i put a mower tank on it after the bottle split lol i had that 80cc yamaha for ages in that state it was a propper franken bike but it cost me £15 and i rode the crap outa it for almost 2 years 🤘
