Reviving our 900cc Ducati Go Kart, the DUCARTI

  • We built a 100 mph go kart a few years ago with a 1996 Ducati 900 Monster Super Sport engine. This 900cc go kart propelled Ike to 102 mph in less than a quarter mile at the drag strip. We put the Ducarti up against our 750cc cross kart at an ATV park and fried the clutch because we didn't have a clutch cover. Since then, the Ducati go kart has sat in a spidery shed for nearly two years. Today, it's time to bring it back with a major service (timing belts, head removal to fix an oil leak, and clutch job, and valve adjustment) so we can return it to our running fleet!

OK- as a life-long collector, restorer and lover of all things Ducati:
Theres no such thing as a "900 Monster Super Sport", the engine either came from a Monster or and SS, but not both-
The cam tensioner and idler bolts are SUPPOSED to be put in with thread lock, sometimes the RED and not the blue, so if you would've heated the fins of the jug where the bolt was, it would've come right out.
Also, the valve adjustment being checked is WAY more important, than belt change- You wont be able to adjust the valves with what you have there,(unless you old boss has all the special tools?) but you can check the clearance for both Opening and closing on both valves, both heads - Nothing will wreck a Ducati Desmo head worse than letting the valves go out of spec- You SHOULD be able to remove both heads and drop them at a local Ducati shop (hopefully small, private shop, NOT the Dealership) and get all the valves adjusted for $250-400, depending on the shop? it only needs to be done on that engine prob ONCE for the whole time you use it considering how little you actually run it -
Also, the wide cam belt bearing has to be bought from a bearing supplier (or from Ducati) which is pricey, but the smaller bearing thats double stacked is avail at ANY autoparts store for $4-6 ea as they use the same bearing that most 4cyl Ford Ranger and Mustangs use for a Pilot bearing, I think Ducati gets over $18 ea for those little ones.......

    • @shroomzftw
      @shroomzftw 3 года назад +8

I don't know why he didn't heat the fins on the jug to begin with any ways instead of just trying to use a solvent newb move

always keep the timing belts pretty loose on the ducatis, to the point where you think they're too lose. The cylinder and head expand a lot unter heat, and if the belts are too tight, you risk ripping them quite easily.
A 5mm allen should slide between belt and tensioner effortlessly.

Timing belt replacement tip: Mark the timing belt at the pulley marks. Count the teeth between the marks. Count the same number of teeth on the new belt and mark it. This will ensure that you do not get a tooth off when installing the new belt. Sometimes it is hard to get the belt tight enough to get the right tooth on the sprocket, but since you have marked your new belt you can rotate one of the sprockets to help get your belt on.

I'm still waiting for the Murray Kilowatt to come back so it can run the new C&C GP!
I went and found a Kilowatt frame after seeing all your videos about it and i'm so happy with what I have now!

    Ouch!
I could HEAR that toasted clutch from here!
From now on, I suggest that you spray down ALL of the bolts on the Ducati, they are Italian bolts, and therefore they SNAP! They should be sprayed on and heated and that should loosen them up.
Replace them with an ARP bolt kit.
I did the same thing with a cart using a Harley Davidson Sportster engine slightly warmed up and with a hand made frame with thicker steel tubing,
I still have it, it's a mean runner!
110 mph and it scares the sh-t out of me.

Always resort to heat, best way to remove stuck bolts. Saves time and money every time
