First video ive watched on blw, no idea why i haven't sooner. I have serious issues with fear of choking, boderline unhealthy really. I actually take things off him which makes him sad lol. So pleased and grateful to have seen this. Baby Tobes says thanks too!
Great idea! Remember that as long as foods are cut properly regardless if they are hard or soft, baby should be able to eat. I don't blame you though. If you're not confident, this won't be a good experience. How's your babe doing now?
Me too. The book I read “Baby led feeding” by Jenna helwig says to use foods you can mash with two fingers. At 8-9 months they can eat more things a little firmer and in bite sized pieces. We did purées for a month before switching over to a mixed approach.

My daughter is 16 months now and eats all by herself! It took me 1 month to get her to eat alone. Great video! My son is 15 months and still am nervous to give solid food and feed him by puree. Because he chokes sometimes and I am so afraid. What can I do, please help?
Please research gagging versus choking. Gagging can easily seem like choking but its essential for babies to learn how much they can handle with each bite. Continue to research and watch videos as you have and you'll become more confident! 👍
You're so welcome! I appreciate you taking the time to let me know. I'm happy you're better prepared to stay baby led weaning! You and baby will do awesome!
Hi there...question for you - my fear is baby gnawing off a piece of food - even something as soft as steamed broccoli or steamed apple - that is too big for him and try to swallow it. Since there aren't any teeth yet, I have to assume/hope that he'll try to gnaw before swallowing? I watch him like a hawk ready to pounce if I see he's taken off something that I know he could never swallow - like the banana, even...if he gnaws on it and takes a large "bite," do I reach in his mouth and grab it before he tries to swallow it?
An update...so I've started giving my son (6.5 months) melon, soft veg like carrot and broccoli, French toast sticks and egg - and yes, he does gag occasionally but I've learned that's how he learns. A couple of his gagging incidents made me totally nervous!... but I realize now to never put my finger in his mouth - that could absolutely cause him to choke (and though I know how to handle a choking incident, I never want to have to!). I never show him that his gagging makes me nervous as he would pick up on that and cause a negative association. I am taking it slow with solid foods, but the more finger foods I give him, the more he learns what he can handle, and I've noticed that - he improves with every meal.
Thank you for the different food ideas!! I’m so excited to start giving my 9 month old solid foods!! He loves toast with a thin slice of peanut butter (:
Hi there! That's awesome! Baby should be eating what you're eating. It's that simple. :) Please watch the other videos 1 and 2 in the series where I talk about starting points. BLW should be fun! You'll both do awesome! Keep me updated!
If the meat is cut properly and your baby tears off a piece, he or she should be able to chew the meat and swallow. My babe didn't start swallowing a lot until closer to 9 months. This is why you always offer milk first. It's essential you're eating right there with them so you can show how to chew and encourage baby to chew. :)
Hi there! I'm sorry I'm late to responding. Bananas are indeed round but they are so soft that once baby gets a piece in his or her mouth it's no longer round. Unless you're giving a super green banana... yuck! :) Usually as soon as baby takes a bit the banana is squished and safe to eat. Keeping in mind though that babies can and will even gag on purees. In fact, my son has yet to choke thankfully and he'll only gag when I give him something mushy like sweet potato or mushed potatoes... so weird!
Yes, unless you're giving your baby a very green banana it shouldn't be firm enough that it would get lodged in baby's throat. You may see gagging with banana though because it's quite mushy and to this day my son doesn't like anything mushy. LOL
This has been so helpful thank you. Am I understanding correctly if I think I don't have to worry too much about the shape, if it's super soft. Like cutting an omelet in to cubes etc? :) Tia
Hi there! So sorry for the late response. No, the shape is extremely important. You'll have to use your best judgement for most things but even though for example a banana is a coin shape, if you give to your babe like how it's given in my thumbnail pic, your babe won't bite off a coin shape chunk. It will be mushy and an irregular shape. Something like an omelet could easily be cut in strips and would be what I would suggest.
You have awesone questions! You can serve baby any food you would eat aside from the exceptions I listed in my previous video. Whether you steam them or serve raw, the carrots should be quartered or smashed. 👍
My 7 month old WILL NOT eat purees of any kind. I've tried all purees, even made them at home and he has no interest in eating them. He will show interest in food that I eat but as soon as I mash them he won't eat it....Any tips?
This video is about baby led weaning and eating what we eat. Not purees or mashed foods. Please watch on how to cut appropriately and your babe will show interest when ready. I hope things are going well!
This is very helpful. But I'm really scared to give to him solids. I really want to try, but too scared. My little one is 9 months almost 10, it's very scary since he likes to shove to whole banana into his mouth
I understand. I was very nervous as well. I think we all are. I think the best way to prepare is to know what to do should your baby choke. Know the difference between choking and gagging, and prepare yourself to start, before starting. Our babes sense our feelings and if you're nervous and anxious and scared, your babe will be too. How are things going now?
I learned a lot from this video, thanks so much. However, if my baby refuse to eat any family food that we have prepared, should I make special food just for her?
I apologize this comment is late. You'll need to consider how you feel on the issue. I've learned there are certain foods my babe doesn't like such as mushy foods like potatoes and he doesn't like tomatoes either. So, I'm obviously not going to force him to eat something I know he doesn't like. However, we have complex enough dinners, meaning there are at least a few items he can eat on, that I don't cook him a whole other meal. If he only eats veggies or noodles that one night, I'm not going to be worried because he eats enough other foods throughout the day. If you get into fixing your babe a whole other meal... you could be leading yourself down a tough road. Decide what's best for you and stick with it. Of course there are exceptions to everything. If we're having a casserole sort of dish and he doesn't like it, and I know there are components in the meal that he doesn't in fact like, I will allow him to have a greek/healthy yogurt with some fruit that night. But again, we try to offer a few types of foods with every meal. I really hope this helps and hope you're doing well!
@@patriciaklein9489 fantastic advice!! And you're so right! They don't have to eat every single thing we eat, eating only a few parts of a meal will be fine with a balanced diet! Thank you for this video, and for all of the helpful responses to people's comments, I'm learning more just reading through them!
Hi everyone! I really appreciate all the positive comments on this video! I'm so glad it's been helpful to you! It's been nearly 2 years now and I would like to share with you how Eric is doing since we introduced food to him BLW style. Be on the lookout for an update video here in a few days!
I have read in the Canadian government distributed book that -raw carrots, apples and celery are a choking hasard before the age of 4 -the meat we give a baby should be well done not rare What do you think?
Yes, a lot of food can be choking hazards if not cut/prepared correctly. Please make sure you're cutting these foods appropriately as demonstrated in this video. Same goes for grapes, blueberries, and other round foods. I gave my baby a whole apple and he was fine biting off pieces. An apple isn't round and the shape of the throat so it's not an immediate choking hazard. All meats need to be well done, same for eggs, no raw yolk yet.
It's ok. He's adjusting. When you feed babies purees, they ingest foods simply by swallowing and the puree bypasses their gag reflex. Now that he is trying food, he's experiencing and learning. Keep trying, keep offering, and watch him closely. Remember, he can feel your feelings so if you're unsure and anxious, he will be too. If you're confident and supportive, he will feel that and be confident you're there. Some babies gag more than others and it's completely normal. Let him work it out and get used to manipulating food in his mouth. You've got this!
My 7 month old does not show interest in grabbing the food I was giving purée food since 4 months is there anyway j can help him get interested in grabbing it
Hi there! Showing interest in food is one sign that baby is ready to start BLW. If he's not interested... he may not be ready. You can always offer him some foods after his milk but honestly my son didn't really start ingesting much food until around 9 months. Give him time and remember you're allowing him to lead the way with this method. :) Keep me posted on his progress!
Hi love, thank you so much,it was very helpful for me as a first time mom. I have a question regarding my 8 months old,he doesn't like solid food at all.doesn't matter how I give or what! I have tried many different ways and I feel very helpless at this point.is there any suggestions that u could give?also should I start with some finger food now, though he gags a lot even if it's one rice! Lots of love❤
Hello! It's normal for babies to gag. Some do more than others. Just keep offering and demonstrating how to eat by only offering food (and the same food) as when you're eating. 8 months is still young, he'll catch on! Just keep offering. :)
@@nusrattasmin7589 Absolutely! You'll both do awesome. :) My son was about 15 months before he actually started consuming what I thought was enough food. Patience and setting an example is key and also speaking with the pediatrician if you're concerned. 💙👍

Hi there! How is your babe doing now? I apologize for the late response. I hope things are going well. There's another video on my channel talking about the criteria for babe's who are ready to start BLW.
I don't really get it... you talk about a windpipe your size, but it's supposed to be a baby size windpipe, things like hot dogs, small pieces of apple, peanuts are dangerous so the size you are cutting the cucumber doesn't seem too safe to me if the baby bites a piece and swallows it.
So I was just wondering my baby is 8months old and he already has 8 teeth. Hes only had puree so far and seems to be swollowing it okay hes not really interested in eating that much tho. But anyway most babys that start this are quite gummy does it matter that he has teeth but probably doesnt know how to chew yet? so he can bite it of but wont know what to do with it? because of this fact what size food should I start with for him? still the bigger finger foods like in this video or should i cut them smaller so he can learn to chew? if that makes sense
Wow, 8 teeth already! That's really awesome. I would follow the same steps by age for safety. Just because he has teeth, doesn't mean he knows how to use them quite yet just like you said. :) Take a small break(a week) before switching to food and he'll do awesome!
@@patriciaklein9489 Hi yes thanks he is hes eating more puree and also he loves eating broccoli in the finger food style. So im giving him both ways hes managed to eat the whole form well and thats made me feel a-lot more confident with giving him things in that form he really enjoys feeding himself and playing with it. have just avoided the coin shape foods etc so yeah sigh of relief just have to keep introducing him to variety and be more organised i think thats mainly where we are lacking is making our food more exciting and therefore his! and not just giving him the same few things really.
@@sarahboytphotography4760 sounds great! Thank you for the update. The sooner you can get him off purees the better. :) He'll show more and more interest as time goes on. Great job!
shayda2011 everything I’ve seen on this is they can have anything you eat expect honey, cows milk (no need for it) and super salty/sugary or processed foods. I’d maybe use those a little lighter than you normally would if you’re worried.
My son is 17 months old and I would like to start him on solids. Do I just give him 1 type of food to begin with or can I give him like 3-4 different foods in one seating?
Great question! He needs to eat what you eat, cut up appropriately. I have two other videos on BLW that have great information, please check them out. :D You'll do great!
I'm concerned that leading your baby to eat foods that are hard and not cooked like cucumber, carrots, skin of banana and lettuce, be it or finger size. A baby of 6 months to 1 year, the baby has only a couple of teeth and can't chew the vegetable all the way before swallowing, the baby could also break off a big chunk of hard vegetable and chock. I am cringing with the steak for a baby to chew, maybe chew it for a small baby first.
Hi Patricia, when my daughter was 6 month I started to give her mashed foods one to two times a day and she ate it for a while (around 1.5 month)..now she is 8 month and starting teething and she refuses all of what she ate before. She mainly drinks formula (I breastfeeded her 6 month and then my milk went away so I switched to formula) and sometimes I try some BLW...she still just tries a little bit and throws most of it on the floor. I am always worried that she does not get enough nutriens...but she looks good. Her weight is ok ..more on the lower side but still in the curve and she is very active and happy. Your video was very helpful and I will keep on trying...I am just worried because she is already 8 month and still does not really like to eat much apart from milk and the teeth still did not come. Thank you for the tipps though! Hello from the Netherlands.
Hi and welcome! If you're worried about her nutrition and health, please talk with her doctor. But, if she's taking her milk like normal, that's really all she needs. My son didn't start eating food well until after a year old. Your daughter doesn't need teeth to eat. She can chew with her gums only. :) Keep offering her the same food you eat and eat with her, everytime. She'll catch on! Remember this is Baby Led, so she can set her own pace. :) You've got this!!
Some babies love spicy food! If the food is unbelievably spicy, you shouldn't give it to her but if it's just a little spicy then she may love it! Have some milk on hand if she freaks out, you can console her and know you need to wait some time before trying again. :) Remember, you know her best!
My baby is 7 months old now. He eats some purées and some table food, whatever me and my husband eat. We argue about sizes to cut baby’s food. For what age can baby eat that size food. Our baby takes big bites of banana 🍌 when just given like that should we just let him work it in his mouth or try to take it out? This is also where me and my husband disagree haha
Hi there! I have 2 other BLW videos, please watch those with your husband if possible. The way I've cut in this video should be where you start with your babe. After babe has gotten skilled at chewing, after a year, you can move into bite sized pieces. You shouldn't fish food out of the mouth, that could further push food down his throat. You should intervene if he's truly choking. You can find other RUclips videos on choking verses gagging. I hope this helps!
Bananas are so easily manipulated in the mouth (soft and squishy) that you don't have to fear bananas. Just always make sure baby is sitting and secure so incase too much is in the mouth, baby can gag out the excess. My babe never had a problem with chocking or gagging but often would bite too much banana and gag a little to get space back in his mouth. It's all a process though of him learning how much he can chew at a time. Very important!
Be carefull with bananas especially when they are soft. I had and incident with my baby a couple days ago. He bit off a large chunk and spit it out then bit off a small piece and did begin to choke on it. This was NOT gagging. He was not breathing. Thank God I was able to dislodge the small piece of banana from his throat and he was ok. But please be carefull with banana. Scariest thing ever!
@@Xxriso I'm so sorry this happened, how frightening! I'll bet you did awesome and stepped in perfectly! Truly, this could happen with anything though not just bananas. As you said, something soft like potatoes but also even cucumbers or something like that. Baby will learn how much he or she can handle by biting off pieces. This is why safety comes first and we should never leave our babies unattended at meal time. I recently heard on the news a little boy choked on a piece of strawberry at day care and he was 3 years old! 😱
Yes, it is best that you eat what baby eats because you're showing how to eat those foods and encouraging baby to eat a variety of food. If you're having a complex dinner or something crazy spicey, you can always leave the spices out from baby's portion but some babies do like a little spice.
@@spookylover2429 I will be posting a video on this. My household has been a mess with renovations so I haven't had a chance to answer your question but, I will. It's an honest question and I get it a lot so no worries.

Is this for starting out at 6m??? Or is this for older babies?
But the banana is still round? Or is it ok to give because it’s soft?
In fact, my son has yet to choke thankfully and he'll only gag when I give him something mushy like sweet potato or mushed potatoes... so weird!
Really helpful! Thanks so much regards from London
Wow, London! Welcome and thank you! Is BLW popular in your country? I feel like it's not that popular here yet but it's gaining momentum for sure. 😊
Patricia Dianne I’m from the UK, and BLW is pretty popular where I live. Cheshire, near Manchester, up north!
All food shown on video can be given to a six month old?
How come banana is okay in a coin shape tho? shouldnt it be cut up in quarters too? thats the only thing that confuses me.
sarahboytphotography think it’s caus there super soft baby will take a bite even without teeth and it will come apart like mush x
Yes, unless you're giving your baby a very green banana it shouldn't be firm enough that it would get lodged in baby's throat. You may see gagging with banana though because it's quite mushy and to this day my son doesn't like anything mushy. LOL
Thank you so much!!!
AWESOME VIDEO!!!! Thank you
You're so welcome and if you subscribed, welcome! :)
Something like an omelet could easily be cut in strips and would be what I would suggest.
do we need to steam carrots finger shaped ? itll be too hard for baby and dangerous raw?
You have awesone questions! You can serve baby any food you would eat aside from the exceptions I listed in my previous video. Whether you steam them or serve raw, the carrots should be quartered or smashed. 👍
Sorry to intrude but I think raw carrots are a choking hasard whatever the way you cut them.
Such a helpful video, thank you
You're so welcome! Happy to help. :)
Great advice, thanks.
How's your babe doing with BLW?
My 7 month old WILL NOT eat purees of any kind. I've tried all purees, even made them at home and he has no interest in eating them. He will show interest in food that I eat but as soon as I mash them he won't eat it....Any tips?
Jessica Bryant have you tried a mesh feeder?
@@stacyfiguracion5655
Yes and he'll bite on it but once the food gets to the pureed state he starts to spit it out
This video is about baby led weaning and eating what we eat.
Well you're not going to starve your baby now are you?
Video will be posted tomorrow. So sorry it took a little longer than anticipated.
I have read in the Canadian government distributed book that
-raw carrots, apples and celery are a choking hasard before the age of 4
-the meat we give a baby should be well done not rare
What do you think?
Yes, a lot of food can be choking hazards if not cut/prepared correctly. Please make sure you're cutting these foods appropriately as demonstrated in this video. Same goes for grapes, blueberries, and other round foods. I gave my baby a whole apple and he was fine biting off pieces. An apple isn't round and the shape of the throat so it's not an immediate choking hazard.
All meats need to be well done, same for eggs, no raw yolk yet.
Thank you your video is informative
So helpful
Mam Can I apply these cut for seventh months old baby ,????
I’ve been trying to get my son eat by himself but he gags & throws up everything he tries if it’s not purée 😩. I don’t know what to do
Patricia Dianne thank you so much !
This is great info and encouragement. Thanks@@patriciaklein9489

How're things going now?
@@patriciaklein9489 Thank you for your reply. Yes I will keep trying. I think patience is the key here.
@@nusrattasmin7589 Absolutely! You'll both do awesome. :) My son was about 15 months before he actually started consuming what I thought was enough food. Patience and setting an example is key and also speaking with the pediatrician if you're concerned. 💙👍

That's understandable. Keep researching and doing your homework until you feel comfortable.
How's your babe doing with BLW? Have you given it another try?
Raw apples are a choking hazard ?
Not if cut properly. :)
is 6 months too young?? i have twin boys and they are HUNGRY
Take a small break(a week) before switching to food and he'll do awesome!
Hi Sarah, is your little guy showing more interest in food now?
Great job!
Can you give baby garlic or onion?
shayda2011 everything I’ve seen on this is they can have anything you eat expect honey, cows milk (no need for it) and super salty/sugary or processed foods. I’d maybe use those a little lighter than you normally would if you’re worried.
Yes - Tris is 100% correct. :)
Great video, thanks... super infrmative!!
Thank you so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it!
Are these foods ok to give a baby with no teeth?
Yes, baby's gum are capable of chewing just fine. :)
@@patriciaklein9489 Thank you! I tried pumpkin today and I steamed it a little too long. Was a hot mess but so worth it haha
Loud and red let them go ahead!
Silent and blue they need help from you!!!!

@@patriciaklein9489 thank you 💟☺ I will try to relax about this. She looks fine to me and drinks milk, like you said.
How are things going now with your little princess?

I wish I would’ve seen this a year ago! I did it all wrong!!
I'm sure everything worked out just fine. :)
What about spicy food? I eat lots of spicy foods, should I feed that to my daughter? Would that be okay?
Some babies love spicy food! If the food is unbelievably spicy, you shouldn't give it to her but if it's just a little spicy then she may love it! Have some milk on hand if she freaks out, you can console her and know you need to wait some time before trying again. :) Remember, you know her best!
Cumin is very healthy spice for babies i give it to my baby almost in his every meal
Dang I've been doing it all wrong lol
Oh no! Better to know safe practices now. Enjoy BLW and please let me know if you have any questions.
So fucking helpful I love this fucking video
I hope this helps!
the banana should be cut? i don't gv it whole like that
Bananas are so easily manipulated in the mouth (soft and squishy) that you don't have to fear bananas.
do i need to eat same food my son does?
Yes, it is best that you eat what baby eats because you're showing how to eat those foods and encouraging baby to eat a variety of food. If you're having a complex dinner or something crazy spicey, you can always leave the spices out from baby's portion but some babies do like a little spice.
