Such a great video! I loved what you said about project panning not being the end-all-be-all solution to overconsumption. It’s so important to go into panning knowing what you hope to get out of it, and I agree it makes the most sense to do as a short-term challenge.
Thank you for collabing with me and for the kind words!! This was so fun 💓

I wouldn't call myself a panner, but I have been keeping track of items used up this year. Everything from toothpaste, shampoo, body washes and lotion to makeup. Your recent video about "staples" hit home for me. I have used this past year to learn my favorites and weed out the rest. I'm not totally there yet, but have made a lot of progress. Thank you for the continued excellent content videos 🙂

I have a smallish collection of make up. I keep my collection curated through a make up inventory which is updated whenever I make a (thoughtful) purchase or use up a product.
I like to keep all my products in rotation through regular make up baskets.
I make a Products to Pan list each year as a reminder to focus on older products that need more regular use because they are reaching their expiry date eg corrector, a cream blush, a certain eye liner, various skin products and perfumes etc.
I am also going to do a No Pan left Behind and set usage goals to make sure that every single pan in my modest eye shadow collection is used in 2024. It’s easy to neglect certain shades and focus on others, in my experience, and this will challenge me to experiment more with my looks.

I wouldn’t say that I do a project pan…. But I forbid myself to buy more blushes and eyeshadows until something is used up. It motivated me to wear more makeup than before so I got there ! One of my blushes is nearly empty and I bought a different colour to spice things up.
But I didn’t buy eyeshadow as I didn’t empty any.
It’s really hard to use things up….
And you’re right about why panning helps : we get to know what we like and even more important to me: how long it takes so I now know how much I can allow myself to buy if I want to finish the products.
Update : I still wanted to buy though, the panning was just part of the behaviours that helped to stop

i understand where you're coming from and feel similarly about blush. I won't buy any either until I use some up.

Qatching from Sarahs channel! Ive enjoyed listening to both of your thoughts on panning. Im at a crossroads as well. I'm going to change up some things and create a new project for myself to fit my collection and goals.

I really like what you said about the tinted moisturizer. I have been struggling to pan some products I really don’t like, but I keep telling myself I need to use it up so I really learn to stop buying things I have no business in buying! When you discussed staples in a recent video that hit home for me as well. I’ve been using the Tarte color corrector for years and just ran out. I was looking at trying the Bobbi Brown one, but then I remembered to just stick to the one I love already. Nothing was wrong with it! Thank you so much for this channel. ❤

The billy crystal esque sweater is fabulous! And I still project pan but I have really changed my approach. I do a lot more usage goals, and I track different items to see what is getting used and what isn't and I am much more liberal with giving things away or decluttering now - the money is spent so honestly if it doesn't bring me joy or its too old no point in keeping it. I think the key is not to stifle creativity and joy when using makeup otherwise it ruins the experience. I have learned this the hard way and I love to pan but hyper focusing can hurt the rest of my items so I want there to be a balance and I am getting there.

I've really enjoyed my first project pan this year. It's really helped me to hone down on my makeup preferences and I hope it will help me to have a more minimal collection and be a more mindful makeup shopper.

I love casually panning 😂 I can’t be an intense project panner bc I focus too hard and ignore my other well-loved products and I’d rather use everything.

yes definitely agree with this and that's the main reason I stopped panning. I hate that other products just sit around

Thanks for the vid, I’m a watcher from Sarah Rose’s channel and I’ve enjoyed her panning content as well as a few others. It was interesting hearing your thoughts on why you were buying makeup and how for you it was about the experience of trying it. It got me thinking about my own reasoning and motivations being my makeup purchases and consumption and I’ve come to the conclusion that I buy makeup for a very different reason.
For me makeup is beautiful, makeup is art and not just in the way of applying it to the “canvas” of my face.
I’m very “picky” about what I buy, it’s has to hit a couple different points for me to be interested enough to want to buy it.
    1. The colors & formulas etc. have to work for me, I don’t want it if it doesn’t for example blue eyeshadow is a no go, I’m not drawn to eyeshadows that are heavily blue.
And 2. The packaging and theming of the product has to speak to me which isn’t always easy, for me it’s the whole experience.
So I’m okay with the fact that I have more makeup than the average person needs and the thought of panning my makeup, of using it all up, makes me sad because I love all the items I have. They are like my own personally curated art collection and what I wish is that I could keep each item forever, that it would never expire and go bad and that it would never run out.
I’m curious if anyone else thinks/feels similar?

I find that I will try to use something and if I really don’t like it then it’s got to go I won’t force myself to use it up. The money has already been “wasted” so why force myself to use it when I hate it, it will just make me feel worse.
And I want to give myself permission to use the stuff I love while I love it. Especially when it comes to things like perfume because I find my tastes change and if I used it sparingly because I did not want it to run out I wind up eventually not liking it anymore or it goes bad and then goes to waste. So now I pan the things I love (give myself permission to use it up while I love them). I hope that makes sense.

@@shawnaripari I try and see if a family member will take it. But I spent the money already and keeping the clutter won’t help and using stuff I hate will make me miserable. I try and learn my lesson and be better with my choices next time. But I get what you mean regarding the guilt
