  • Seiko has a rich history of iconic dive watches and currently they have many classics such as the Marinemaster 300, Tuna, 62MAS, SKX, Turtle, Sumo, Samurai, and Monster to name a few. However, what became known as the Captain Willard is amongst the most famous. Over the past few years Seiko has had a great run of recreating many of these classic dive watches in this $1,000-$1,500 range starting with the SPB143, SPB151 and the SPB185.
    Then came the Slim WIllard (SPB313) and this was a turning point for me because it was the first SPB dive watch that I bought and I was thoroughly impressed by the elegant case and unique bracelet design. Even still, I knew I wanted to experience the Captain Willard at which point I got the SPB265 Ice Diver Special Edition. And now that I’ve had each one for well over a year, I have been wondering which one I would keep if I could only keep one.
    So in this video I’m going to compare the different aspects of the Captain Willard SPB265 Ice Diver and the Slim WIllard SPB313 to see what makes each watch unique and what makes one watch better than the other. In other words I’m just trying to visualize the pros and cons and to make myself feel better about having both in one collection. (That said I am selling the SPB313 Slim Willard (spoiler alert) and Marinemaster 300 SLA021)

    Like the video said, my Seiko SPB313 slim willard is for sale! Box and papers are included and the watch only has one scratch on the bracelet (12 oclock side desk diving). The price is $600 based on recent sales on watch charts and because I want to make the transaction as simple as possible.
    My Marinemaster 300 is also for sale for $1,500 based on the recent listings found on watchcharts.com. I priced the watch at $1,500 to make the transaction as simple as possible by just offering the lowest price from the start.

    Seiko MM300- marketplace.watchcharts.com/listings/watch_model/23304
    If you’d like to purchase either watch, send me an email at thewatchidiot@gmail.com with your shipping zip code so that I can get a shipping quote. I will take care of the first $50 of shipping costs. Most of the time that means free shipping for you!

    Slim turtle hands down. It's the original grand daddy turtle and Seikos first diver with its own design language (they were just dipping their toes in dive watch design with 62MAS.
    All you tube reviewers were getting the white dial as unusual for Seiko.
    I got the gilt one. Its got the toolish no unnecessary nonsense contrasting with the black bay warm vintage style. Wears amazing on 7.25 wrist. I'm not entirely on board with the bracelet though. Maybe I'll get the uncle Z199 as it pairs well. Just ordered a chocolate bar rubber strap in chocolate brown for it!

      I really want to try out the Z199 bracelet and between the two watches id get it for the Slim willard for sure! The only thing that bothers me is the blank endlinks on them, although i respect that the blank endlinks were a part of the original bracelets

      @ShortLifeHax 3 дня назад

      @@thewatchidiot what do you mean by blank endlinks? the one I got for the slim the end link was very flush and clean made for the watch. Uncle has all the end links to swap to any watch made for it so you only need 1 bracelet.

    The Captain Willard is the clear winner. But I hate that X on the dial - reminds me of Twitter and social media. Ugh. So I bought a Steeldive SD1970 Captain Willard, and put on an aftermarket dial which is a replica of the original Willard. Now I’m as happy as a pig in mud.

Your content and videos are fantastic, as are the details, reviews and photography. More enthusiasts should support you as you are as good if not better than a lot of Watch related youtubers out there. Long time viewer of the channel. Keep up the great work.

    I would have a very difficult time choosing between these two. If I had them both and had to sell one I'm sure I'd have a little bit of sellers remorse for either. But If I had to make the choice I would have to agree with you probably because I already have a few other divers that cover the Slim Willard use case. I don't have a watch that covers the Captain Willard so may be I should consider one at some point in the future. As always many thanks for sharing.

      At the start it was a tough decision for me as well! And what you say makes sense, it'll be hard for any watch to compete directly against your SMP300 Great White. For me as time went by the Captain Willard just kept getting better and better! I think you should definitely check it out at some point its quite the experience. Always great to hear from you!

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  3 дня назад +1

      Yeah its a Uncle straps BOR i used the thinner 3 microadjust clasp from it on another watch so then i put the chunkier clasp on the BOR. Actually the original uncle straps clasp might be on the Slim Willard bracelet lol!

    I’d sell them both and buy an SPB151…and put it on a rubber candy bar or tropic strap. That would be more like a real Cpt. Willard. But if you just want one turtle, I’d sell the white dial.

    I have the black Willard and love it. The 4:30 date keeps me away from the Slim Willard.
    Actually, the 4:30 date keeps me away from all the new Seikos as that’s the direction they’ve gone since the new iso regulations. At first, I was bummed but it might be a blessing for me to stop craving new Seiko divers. I’m a Seikohead for life but F those crappy diver extension clasps.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  11 дней назад +1

      For me the slim Willard does the 4:30 date pretty well with it being color matched and straightened which was a nice surprise. Thankfully the date disappears for me but I get why it's a deal breaker for folks.
      That said at least the Captain Willard is going strong for you, not sure if I'd ever need anything beyond it! (Apart from the MM200 GMT with a 4:30 date window lol)
      And yeah those clasps are just the worst, thank god that swapping them out for aftermarket clasps is cheap and easy to do
