  • In honor of the late Gordon Meredith Lightfoot, 1938-2023. This was recorded on Canada Day (July 1st) of 1991 at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois. Not only is it the highest quality recording I've ever heard of a 1990's Lightfoot concert, but it features a (very) involved audience, and a few humorous attempts at a few songs he hasn't played very much in concert.
    Musicians:
Gordon Lightfoot - Vocals, 12-string and 6-string guitar
    Terry Clements - Lead Guitar
    Rick Haynes - Bass
    Mike Heffernan - Keyboards
Barry Keane - Drums & Percussion
    Set List:
    Sea Of Tranquility
    Alberta Bound
    Hangdog Hotel Room
The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald
    Sundown
    Ring Them Bells
    The Pony Man
    In My Fashion
    Wild Strawberries
    Blackberry Wine
If You Could Read My Mind
    Don Quixote
    Endless Wire
    Race Among the Ruins
    Beautiful
    Fading Away
    I'll Tag Along
    East of Midnight
    A Lesson In Love
    Morning Glory
    Spanish Moss
    Shadows
    Only Love Would Know
    Ghosts Of Cape Horn
    O' Canada
    Canadian Railroad Trilogy
    Baby Step Back
    Early Morning Rain

I’ve listened and loved this man’s music for many many years. The one and only time I went to see him in concert he had a stroke the night before. He came on stage and sang but he was not doing well. I felt for him. He tried to perform for his audience but the concert was very short. Sad to think I never saw him again. RIP Gordon my friend.

I miss him so! In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed in the Maritime Sailor's Cathedral. A church bell chimed till it rang 30 times, one for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald and one for Gordon Lightfoot the day after he left us. RIP LEGEND! So glad I got to see you 37 times. You will always be the greatest of all time.❤

He grew increasingly more conversational as time went on. Good vibe with the audience here. I saw him during this period at the Civic Center in Phoenix, same year I believe. (I recognize the Hawaiian shirt and have a photo in my office/music room I took at the show.) I never missed him when he came to town for over 30 years.

This is a massive discovery for me. I can’t thank you enough for sharing this. For 1991, Gordon’s voice sounds absolutely amazing here.

We must keep praying for the dead but I have a hunch that Gord did all his repenting down below on earth. Hundreds of acts of sweetness and gratitude, just trying to have a part of what this ship of fools has had to say.
I just received one of the best Poems I ever read or wrote. I kind of think Gord was praying for me. 40 years ago I had a dream where I met Gordon. He was really old and he thanked me. Iv been giving his records to people as I was a real fanatic in the 1970s. I thought it was just me but man it turned out I was right about Gord from the start.

      The man born blind
The man born blind did tell of things
when he came back to life
      Fantastic things he'd never dreamed
      beyond his scope of night
      Tennis shoes and TV crews
      and rows of broken bikes
      Elephants in Africa
      and fields of Arctic ice
flights beyond the clouds of air
      to mountains on the moon
      Looking back from heaven
where he had gone too soon
      Portraits in the Prado
      on walls of classic art
      Actors signing autographs
      and doctors signing charts
Who on earth can truly say
      that eyes alone give sight
The man born blind saw more in death
than the eagle see in flight

I started adding up the number of times I had seen Gordon live, and I think I saw him more than any other live act. Missed but never forgotten. I was thinking that when he died, I'll bet what surprised him most was to see 29 strangers waiting to greet him. :)
